• Oneric Aspire One. After latest 11.10 update to Linux 3.0.0-9 boot hangs at staement "Starting Bluetooth"

  I have today updated the version of Linux on Ubuntu on my Acer Aspire One. The boot hangs on the statement "Starting Bluetooth". Help please!! EDIT1: I get the grub menu when I start the netbook and it doesn´t matter which version of linux I choose the resulkt is the same. It gets as far as the Ubuntu spash screen then drops into command line mode then hangs on the line "Starting Bluetooth". I can log in and have tried various forms of the apt-get command to fix the system but with no result. I do not need bluetooth at the moment and so could remove the application if I knew how. (have tried apt-get remove bluez). When I use the command sudo apt-get -f install I get an error message saying "There's not enough space in /var/lib/mysql/" folowed by several other error messages. I have spent some time looking for similar problems and solutions using google but so far got to nothing to help. Thanks EDIT2: I have since discovered when running Knoppix or slitaz from a usb stick that the file managers report the hard disc as having no space. However GPARTED reports it as having 3.69gb. I do recall making space on the hard drive by deleting some old files and emptying trash whilst the update was running; perhaps its related. Any suggestions for how I can recover the apparently lost space from hard disc without losing the data. I have backups of the actual data but do not wnat to lose the applcations configuration. • What's wrong with this Open GL ES 2.0. Shader?

  I just can't understand this. The code works perfectly on the emulator(Which is supposed to give more problems than phones…), but when I try it on a LG-E610 it doesn't compile the vertex shader. The phone is also giving a constant error while plugged: ERROR FBIOGET_ESDCHECKLOOP fail, from msm7627a.gralloc Edited: "InfoLog:" refers to glGetShaderInfoLog, and it's returning nothing. Since I removed the log in a previous edit I will just say i'm looking for feedback on compiling shaders. Solution + More questions: Ok, the problem seems to be that either ints are not working(generally speaking) or that you can't mix floats with ints. That brings to me the question, why on earth glGetShaderInfoLog is returning nothing? Shouldn't it tell me something is wrong on those lines? It surely does when I misspell something. I solved by turning everything into floats, but If someone can add some light into this, It would be appreciated. Thanks.

• Random greyed unresponsive screen on netbook

  I love my Asus Eee PC 1000 Ubuntu 12.04 netbook, but I have a little problem. As I use it, the screen will randomly turn grey and become unresponsive. I can then only wait, until perhaps 10-60 secs. later, when I can interact again. Only the bar at the top of my screen retains its colour throughout. I thought it might be Firefox, as I have a lot of tabs open. I installed Chromium, used it instead, and the problem remained. A while back I upgraded from 1 to 2 Gb RAM. So, I thought recently, maybe I should increase the swap-space. I have 738Mb of 7.2Gb free on root; and 2Gb of 28Gb free on my home drive. I bought a 32 Gb SD Card and assigned 4Gb to swap space. cat /proc/swaps reports that the partition is being used. Alas the problem remains. Does anyone know what's wrong with my machine? The SD Card has changed my machine somewhat, but the greying still happens. I ran free -m shortly after another episode, and received: total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 2004 1731 272 0 370 769 -/+ buffers/cache: 591 1412 Swap: 4073 0 4073 Update: Using 'top', I can see that compiz uses about 43% of the CPU (#1 position) when the greying occurs. After the greying, compiz drops back down to its usual 8% of CPU.

• I am being paid very little(imo), how can I change this? [migrated]

  I am a web developer with about 4 years of relevant work experience in my field. Recently, I went from making $30/hr working from home contracting for large companies to a full time job that only pays 40k/yr. The company I work for now is great, nice people, but a little behind the times. I joined on with very little experience in SQL development but they put me in charge of querying the DB and making reports right away, so I had to go in head first and pick up that skill right away. Which is great, I'm happy I learned more of that, and really make good time when doing SQL now. However, I'm now doing most of their advanced SQL stuff. The day I started, another employee who was running a MVC project based in Yii (which is the sole item that makes this company software) put in his two weeks. Two weeks later, I'm the only one who knows how to use, access, modify, or update this project. Its quite a large responsibility for an "entry level dev", no? I am doing highly advanced jQuery for them to modernize their forms, webpages, amongst other things, a skill that I would bet on few Entry levels being able to do as well as me. I may be wrong, but I feel that what I'm making now is not acceptable. We don't have reviews, ever, so I can't just wait for that.. so I was wondering.. do I sound justified in wanting to be paid more, and how can I make this happen?

• New mainboard with 890GX chipset disables lightdm, even when using old graphics card instead of onboard graphics, startx works (Xubuntu 12.04)

  I am trying to migrate an installed Xubuntu 12.04 to a new mainbaord with 890GX chipset. The Chipset has a built-in Radeon HD 4290 graphics. The system boots, but X won't start. The most suspicious message in Xorg.0.log is "ddxSigGiveUp: Closing log". When searching for this message, I found some answers like "remove your xorg.conf" (but there is none on my system). Or bug reports for fglrx (but that's not installed on my system). Or NVidia-related questions ... Interestingly, "startx" succeeds in opening a basic XFCE session. Then, I tried to disable the onboard graphics in the BIOS setup and use the old PCIe graphics card (Radeon HD 5450). No change. I don't think I can just blacklist a module, because the graphics card and the onboard graphics are covered by the same module. At the moment, use the free radeon drivers, not the restricted fglrx driver. If possible, I would like to stay on the free driver for two reasons: The fglrx driver from the ubuntu packages fails to build the kernel module. In past, I had bad experiences with the fglrx driver and changing screen config with RandR. When I connect the harddisk and the graphics card to my old mainboard, everything works again. This means, I have not screwed up my system configuration wile installing and removing the fglrx drivers. When I ordered this mainboard, I thought the 890GX is old enough to be supported and if not, I could still use my graphics card as backup solution. But without even the backup soluton, I'm screwed ... Any ideas ? Thanks and Regards, Kubuntu-Man (now switched to Xubuntu)

• Dell Vostro 3560 bluetooth doesn't work

  I installed the wireless driver using this instruction How do I install BCM43142 wireless drivers for Dell Vostro 3460/3560 and I have WiFi working. No problems here. But unfortunately the bluetooth doesn't work. The ubuntu bar shows the bluetooth sign and I can turn the bluetooth on/off but I can't discover any devices. And I can't find my laptop when I turn visibility On. So, obviously bluetooth doesn't work. I couldn't find the reports that blutooth can actually work with this adapter in Ubuntu. So, my question is: Is there anyone with BCM43142 adapter that have bluetooth working? Thank You in advance. PS. Ubuntu 12.10 x64 Update: After some fiddling around with different drivers from different sources I managed to get bluetooth working. Not flawlessly but at least I can pair a device. Bluetooth started working after installation of this package bt-bcm43142-onereic_0.0+20111116somerville2_amd64.deb Originally I found this package on the disk with Ubuntu which came with the Laptop. What this package does, it installs a firmware loader and a firmware itself. This firmware needs to get bluetooth working. Still bluetooth sometimes doesn't work even with this package. But manual loading the firmware helps. brcm_patchram_plus_usb --patchram /lib/firmware/BCM43142A0_001.001.011.0028.0036.hcd hci0 Also I found it strange that this package writes all different ids into /sys/bus/usb/drivers/btusb/new_id because only one from the list matches my device ID bcm43142.conf: install btusb /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install btusb && echo '0a5c 21d3' > /sys/bus/usb/drivers/btusb/new_id && echo '0a5c 21d7' > /sys/bus/usb/drivers/btusb/new_id && echo '0a5c 21e1' > /sys/bus/usb/drivers/btusb/new_id && echo '0a5c 21e3' > /sys/bus/usb/drivers/btusb/new_id && hciconfig hci0 up && /usr/bin/brcm_patchram_plus_usb --patchram /lib/firmware/BCM43142A0_001.001.011.0028.0036.hcd hci0 & My lsusb: ... Bus 002 Device 003: ID 0a5c:21d7 Broadcom Corp. In conclusion: bluetooth works not nearly as good as in windows :( once I even got a complete crash of the system because of the btusb module. • Developer’s Life – Every Developer is a Spiderman

  I have to admit, Spiderman is my favorite superhero.  The most recent movie recently was released in theaters, so it has been at the front of my mind for some time. Spiderman was my favorite superhero even before the latest movie came out, but of course I took my whole family to see the movie as soon as I could!  Every one of us loved it, including my daughter.  We all left the movie thinking how great it would be to be Spiderman.  So, with that in mind, I started thinking about how we are like Spiderman in our everyday lives, especially developers. Let me list some of the reasons why I think every developer is a Spiderman. We have special powers, just like a superhero.  There is a reason that when there are problems or emergencies, we get called in, just like a superhero!  Our powers might not be the ability to swing through skyscrapers on a web, our powers are our debugging abilities, but there are still similarities! Spiderman never gives up.  He might not be the strongest superhero, and the ability to shoot web from your wrists is a pretty cool power, it’s not as impressive as being able to fly, or be invisible, or turn into a hulking green monster.  Developers are also human.  We have cool abilities, but our true strength lies in our willingness to work hard, find solutions, and go above and beyond to solve problems. Spiderman and developers have “spidey sense.”  This is sort of a joke in the comics and movies as well – that Spiderman can just tell when something is about to go wrong, or when a villain is just around the corner.  Developers also have a spidey sense about when a server is about to crash (usually at midnight on a Saturday). Spiderman makes a great superhero because he doesn’t look like one.  Clark Kent is probably fooling no one, hiding his superhero persona behind glasses.  But Peter Parker actually does blend in.  Great developers also blend in.  When they do their job right, no one knows they were there at all. “With great power comes great responsibility.”  There is a joke about developers (sometimes we even tell the jokes) about how if they are unhappy, the server or databases might mysteriously develop problems.  The truth is, very few developers would do something to harm a company’s computer system – they take their job very seriously.  It is a big responsibility. These are just a few of the reasons why I love Spiderman, why I love being a developer, and why I think developers are the greatest.  Let me know other reasons you love Spiderman and developers, or if you can shoot webs from your wrists – I might have a job for you. • Gnome Shell segfault in libglib-2.0

  I have been using Ubuntu 11.10 + Gnome Shell with a Nvidia card, but now I've moved it to my new PC which has an ATI card, at first it wasn't booting but I installed the driver from amd.com and then it worked. Anyway my problem is that gnome-shell is crashing, mostly when I try to start a VirtualBox machine (it happened in other times but I don't remember what I was doing). Sometimes gnome-shell respawns and it continue working but sometimes it doesn't so I have to restart lightdm and lose all the windows I was using. • My Ubuntu Touch seems to be broken no matter how many different files I try

  So I'm planning on testing out Ubuntu Touch, and developing some applications for it so I thought I would flash it to my Nexus 4 that was already unlocked, and running Paranoid Android and the kernel associated. I headed to Ubuntu's website, browsed around and came across this page: Touch/Install - Ubuntu Wiki I followed Step 1 perfectly, word by word. Its seems to me that everything on that part is fine. I skipped Step 2 having already done that for Paranoid Android, and then I follow 3 and 4 word to word also. Using the command phablet-flash -b everything seemed to be fine. So it booted up and all seemed normal, but it wasn't. Here are some major bugs that only seem to happen to me. So I was greeted with a normal lock screen: But one of the first noticable things on the home screen is that I only have 4 tabs, not 5: Some of the applications that are supposed to work do not (I know some are dummies) like here with the calculator, this is what I get: On the homescreen it is a black box, it will crash a couple of seconds later: Another annoying problem is that when I want to close apps, I have from right to left, if I close an app on the left first it will close it, but it will open the app to it's right, weird: Yet another bug, this one is in the pull down drawer, when you just click on it, you can see that not all the icons are there: Pretty much everything else works as it should, but my main problem is that there is no telephony, I'm not sure how it works exactly, but I'm never asked a SIM code (I'm guessing you need that?), I can't compose SMS's and can't dial numbers, it won't let me select the 'Send' or 'Call' button. I've after tried manual installs all over the place with these files: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-touch-preview/daily-preinstalled/current/saucy-preinstalled-armel+mako.zip (Says 44MB on site - 46.6MB on my laptop) http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-touch-preview/daily-preinstalled/current/saucy-preinstalled-phablet-armhf.zip (Says 366MB on site - 383.2MB on my laptop) There are some weird size differences between what the site told me and what I downloaded, but I've tried re-downloading just to end up with the same file. And it just alway ends up with the same problems. No telephony and those weird bugs. So my question is, how the hell can I get the same version as everyone else, with the ability to send texts and call and open the calculator and more?   Last year I took myself through a crash course on Lean Software Development and Kanban Systems in preparation for an in-house presentation.  I learned a bunch.  In this series, I’ll be sharing what I learned with you.   If your career looks anything like mine, you have probably been affiliated with a company or two which pushed requirements gathering and documentation to the nth degree. To add insult to injury, they probably added planning process (documentation, requirements, policies, meetings, committees) to the extent that it possibly retarded any progress. In my opinion, the typical company resembles the quote from Tom DeMarco. It isn’t enough just to do things right – we also had to say in advance exactly what we intended to do and then do exactly that. In the 1980s, Toyota turned the tables and revolutionize the automobile industry with their approach of “Lean Manufacturing.” A massive paradigm shift hit factories throughout the US and Europe. Mass production and scientific management techniques from the early 1900’s were questioned as Japanese manufacturing companies demonstrated that ‘Just-in-Time’ was a better paradigm. The widely adopted Japanese manufacturing concepts came to be known as ‘lean production’. Lean Thinking capitalizes on the intelligence of frontline workers, believing that they are the ones who should determine and continually improve the way they do their jobs. Lean puts main focus on people and communication – if people who produce the software are respected and they communicate efficiently, it is more likely that they will deliver good product and the final customer will be satisfied. In time, the abstractions behind lean production spread to logistics, and from there to the military, to construction, and to the service industry. As it turns out, principles of lean thinking are universal and have been applied successfully across many disciplines. Lean has been adopted by companies including Dell, FedEx, Lens Crafters, LLBean, SW Airlines, Digital River and eBay. Lean thinking got its name from a 1990’s best seller called The Machine That Changed the World : The Story of Lean Production. This book chronicles the movement of automobile manufacturing from craft production to mass production to lean production. Tom and Mary Poppendieck, that is.  Here’s one of their books: Implementing Lean Software Thinking: From Concept to Cash Our in-house presentations are supposed to run no more than 45 minutes.  I really cranked and got through my 87 slides in just under an hour. Of course, I had to cheat a little – I only covered the 7 principles and a single practice. In the next part of the series, we’ll dive into Principle #1: Eliminate Waste. • Meet Peter, 80 years old today

  You have to arrive at the office early in the morning to meet Peter. He arrives at 5am and by 8:30am he's gone. Peter has been a cleaner here for several years. He is 80 years old today. Peter was born only a couple of km from our office in Cambridge, England and was for many years an Engineer for Pye Electronics. I'm lucky enough to arrive in the office early enough to catch Peter, dressed smarter than most of us in shirt and tie, and he tells stories of how Cambridge was years ago. He says the site of our office is on land between what would have been a prisoner of war camp (camp 1025), and a few hundred metres North, a camp of American allies. In February 1944, Peter was 13 years old. One night, a Dornier Do 217 heavy bomber heading towards London was hit by anti-aircraft fire and the crew of four parachuted from the plane. The plane however, continued on autopilot for over 50km. Gradually dropping lower and lower, narrowly missing the spires of Cambridge, it eventually came to land, largely intact, in allotment gardens by Peter's house near Milton Road. He told me that he was quick to the scene, along with some other young lads, and grabbed parts of the plane as souvenirs. It's one of many tales that Peter recounts, but I happened to discover a chapter about this particular plane crash in a history book called the War Torn Skies of Great Britain by Julian Evan-Hart. It reads: 'It slid to a halt in the allotment gardens of Milton Road. The cockpit ended up crumpled against a wooden fence and several incendiary bombs that had broken loose from their containers in the ruptured bomb bay were strewn over the ground behind the Dornier.' I smiled when I read the following line: 'Many residents came to see the Dornier in the allotments. Several lads made off with souvenirs' It seems a young Peter has been captured in print! For his birthday, among other things, we gave him a copy of the book. Working for a software company and rushing headlong through the 21st century, it's easy to forget even our recent history, or what feet stood on the same ground before us. That aircraft crashed only 700 metres from where our office now stands. The disused and overgrown railway line that runs down the side of the office closed to passengers 30 years ago. The industrial estate the other side was the site of a farm, Trinity Hall Farm, as recently as 60 years ago. Roman rings and Palaeolithic handaxes have been unearthed nearby. I suppose Peter will be one of the last people I'll ever hear talking first-hand about Cambridge during the war. It's a privilege to know him. Happy birthday Peter.

• XNA extending an existing Content type

  We are doing a game in XNA that reacts to music. That is why I want to edit/patch the source of only that single kernel module to add some extra debug output. The kernel module in question is mvsas and not necessary to boot. • Advice on designing a robust program to handle a large library of meta-information & programs

  So this might be overly vague, but here it is anyway I'm not really looking for a specific answer, but rather general design principles or direction towards resources that deal with problems like this. It's one of my first large-scale applications, and I would like to do it right. Brief Explanation My basic problem is that I have to write an application that handles a large library of meta-data, can easily modify the meta-data on-the-fly, is robust with respect to crashing, and is very efficient. (Sorta like the design parameters of iTunes, although sometimes iTunes performs more poorly than I would like). If you don't want to read the details, you can skip the rest Long Explanation Specifically I am writing a program that creates a library of image files and meta-data about these files. There is a list of tags that may or may not apply to each image. The program needs to be able to add new images, new tags, assign tags to images, and detect duplicate images, all while operating. The program contains an image Viewer which has tagging operations. The idea is that if a given image A is viewed while the library has tags T1, T2, and T3, then that image will have boolean flags for each of those tags (depending on whether the user tagged that image while it was open in the Viewer). However, prior to being viewed in the Viewer, image A would have no value for tags T1, T2, and T3. Instead it would have a "dirty" flag indicating that it is unknown whether or not A has these tags or not. The program can introduce new tags at any time (which would automatically set all images to "dirty" with respect to this new tag) This program must be fast. It must be easily able to pull up a list of images with or without a certain tag as well as images which are "dirty" with respect to a tag. It has to be crash-safe, in that if it suddenly crashes, all of the tagging information done in that session is not lost (though perhaps it's okay to loose some of it) Finally, it has to work with a lot of images (10,000) I am a fairly experienced programmer, but I have never tried to write a program with such demanding needs and I have never worked with databases. With respect to the meta-data storage, there seem to be a few design choices: Choice 1: Invidual meta-data vs centralized meta-data Individual Meta-Data: have a separate meta-data file for each image. This way, as soon as you change the meta-data for an image, it can be written to the hard disk, without having to rewrite the information for all of the other images. Centralized Meta-Data: Have a single file to hold the meta-data for every file. This would probably require meta-data writes in intervals as opposed to after every change. The benefit here is that you could keep a centralized list of all images with a given tag, ect, making the task of pulling up all images with a given tag very efficient

• Windows Azure Recipe: High Performance Computing

  One of the most attractive ways to use a cloud platform is for parallel processing. Commonly known as high-performance computing (HPC), this approach relies on executing code on many machines at the same time. On Windows Azure, this means running many role instances simultaneously, all working in parallel to solve some problem. Doing this requires some way to schedule applications, which means distributing their work across these instances. To allow this, Windows Azure provides the HPC Scheduler. This service can work with HPC applications built to use the industry-standard Message Passing Interface (MPI). Software that does finite element analysis, such as car crash simulations, is one example of this type of application, and there are many others. The HPC Scheduler can also be used with so-called embarrassingly parallel applications, such as Monte Carlo simulations. Whatever problem is addressed, the value this component provides is the same: It handles the complex problem of scheduling parallel computing work across many Windows Azure worker role instances. Drivers Elastic compute and storage resources Cost avoidance Solution Here’s a sketch of a solution using our Windows Azure HPC SDK: Ingredients Web Role – this hosts a HPC scheduler web portal to allow web based job submission and management. It also exposes an HTTP web service API to allow other tools (including Visual Studio) to post jobs as well. Worker Role – typically multiple worker roles are enlisted, including at least one head node that schedules jobs to be run among the remaining compute nodes. Database – stores state information about the job queue and resource configuration for the solution. Blobs, Tables, Queues, Caching (optional) – many parallel algorithms persist intermediate and/or permanent data as a result of their processing. These fast, highly reliable, parallelizable storage options are all available to all the jobs being processed. The scheduler supports parallel computational tasks such as parametric sweeps, Message Passing Interface (MPI) processes, and service-oriented architecture (SOA) requests across your computing resources in Windows Azure. With the Windows Azure HPC Scheduler SDK, developers can create Windows Azure deployments that support scalable, compute-intensive, parallel applications. • ATI (fglrx) Dual monitor / laptop hot-plugging

  I feel like I've gone back 5 years on my desktop today. I'll try not dump to much frustration here... I been running 12.04 since alpha with the ATI open source drivers and the gnome 3 desktop. I been generally very happy with them with only small issues along the way. Now of course it does not support 3D acceleration 100%, so games like my newly purchased Amnesia from the Humble bundle would not play. OK, no worries, the ATI driver is in the repos so let me have a go I thought. With all this testing that's been done with multi-monitor support, what could go wrong...? How I use my computer: It's laptop, with a HD 3670 card in it. I spend about 50% of the time working directly on the laptop (at home) and about 50% of the time working with an additional display connected (at work), multi desktop environment. What happening now: installed drivers things seemed to working, save some small other bugs (not critical) this morning I take my machine and plug the additional monitor into it, and nothing happens... ok fine. open "displays" try configure dual display, won't work open ati config "thing" (cause it is a thing, a crap thing) and set-up monitors there reboot it says (oh ffs, really.... ok) reboot, login and wow, I got a gnome 2 desktop (presume gnome 3 fall back) and no multi-monitor...great. (screenshot: http://ubuntuone.com/5tFe3QNFsTSIGvUSVLsyL7 ) after getting into a situation where I had to Ctrl + Alt + Del to get out of a frozen display, I eventually manage to set-up a single display desktop on the "main" monitor ok.. time to go home... unplug monitor... nothing happens.. oh boy here we go... try displays again, nothing, just hangs the display.. great. crash all the apps and reboot... So it's been a trying day... What I really hope is that someone else has figured out how to avoid this PAIN. Please help with a solution that: allows me run fglrx (so I can run the games I want) allows me to hot-plug a monitor to my laptop and remove it again allows me to change the display so include the hot-plugged monitor (preferable automatically like it did with the open drivers) Next best if that's not possible: switch between laptop only display and monitor only display easily (i.e. not having to reboot/logout/suspened etc) Really appreciate the time of anyone that has a solution. • Library to fake intermittent failures according to tester-defined policy?

  I'm looking for a library that I can use to help mock a program component that works only intermittently - usually, it works fine, but sometimes it fails. For example, suppose I need to read data from a file, and my program has to avoid crashing or hanging when a read fails due to a disk head crash. I'd like to model that by having a mock data reader function that returns mock data 90% of the time, but hangs or returns garbage otherwise. Or, if I'm stress-testing my full program, I could turn on debugging code in my real data reader module to make it return real data 90% of the time and hang otherwise. Now, obviously, in this particular example I could just code up my mock manually to test against a random() routine. However, I was looking for a system that allows implementing any failure policy I want, including: Fail randomly 10% of the time Succeed 10 times, fail 4 times, repeat Fail semi-randomly, such that one failure tends to be followed by a burst of more failures Any policy the tester wants to define Furthermore, I'd like to be able to change the failure policy at runtime, using either code internal to the program under test, or external knobs or switches (though the latter can be implemented with the former). In pig-Java, I'd envision a FailureFaker interface like so: interface FailureFaker { /** Return true if and only if the mocked operation succeeded. Implementors should override this method with versions consistent with their failure policy. */ public boolean attempt(); } And each failure policy would be a class implementing FailureFaker; for example there would be a PatternFailureFaker that would succeed N times, then fail M times, then repeat, and a AlwaysFailFailureFaker that I'd use temporarily when I need to simulate, say, someone removing the external hard drive my data was on. (In fact, I got the idea from Steve Maguire's Writing Solid Code, where he discusses this exact idea on pages 228-231, saying that such facilities were common in Microsoft code of that early-90's era.) However, I'm only familiar with EasyMock and jMockit for Java, and neither AFAIK have this function, or something similar with different syntax. Hence, the question: Do such libraries as I've described above exist? If they do, where have you found them useful? If you haven't found them useful, why not?

• Cannot get 3D OpenGL support in Vmware guests, how can I fix this?

  I have been working at this problem for 2 days now. I cannot for the life of me enable 3D support in VMWare 9 guests. My specifications are: Hardware: Dell Latitude E5520 laptop. Processor: Intel i7-2620M CPU @ 2.70GHz × 4. Memory: 8GB. Video: Intel Sandybridge Mobile x86/MMX/SSE2 OS: Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS, 32 bit. Vmware Workstation: 9.0.1 build-894247 Glxgears functions fine. Frame rate is ~60fps. Vmware guest: Windows 7 Starting the Windows 7 guest in VMware throws the following errors: No 3D support is available from the host. and Hardware graphics acceleration is not available. I've read through this VMware forum thread, but again the hardware in the post is different (nVidia). I've followed the instructions at this Ask Ubuntu post as closely as possible as the question is nearly the same as mine although my hardware is different. Answer 1 regarding setting mks.gl.allowBlacklistedDrivers = TRUE; in my vmx configuration file causes the VM to crash when it starts. The second answer I followed as closely as possible. I uninstalled VMware, Did sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-$(uname -r) at a terminal, Added the PPA https://launchpad.net/~glasen/+archive/intel-driver, Then at a terminal did sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade -y I reinstalled VMware and have the same results: no 3D in guests. I'm getting the feeling that something is awry with the Sandy Bridge driver, but I can't seem to come up with any solutions. Has anyone out there run across this problem also? By the way, the operation of the likes of Solidworks and AutoCad within a Windpws 7 guest does appear to be improved in VMware 9 vs VMware 8 in spite of the fact that 3D support is lacking in the Windows 7 guest. I'd also add that my glxinfo file was nearly identical to the glxinfo file posted at askubuntu.com/questions/181829/…. I had a total of seven minor differences per a comparison using Meld. –

• What to do when opensource project starts to tear apart? (or a manager tries to write code and than shouts at the team)

  Imagine there is an open source cross-platform project on Google code. It has lots of revisions (1000). It concentrates in itself lots technological stuff - rare stuff - it mixes top tech. It contains server, and more than one client. The project was created by a well-connected team of developers (friends) and a manager that was sponsoring project at its start up during its first few months (project now is more than a year old-sponsoring oss project is a big good deal- also gave the idea of project to developers). The project was growing in complexity and effort reqiered to continue development. Once upon a time a manager - team leader started trying to write code (he was a programmer in some other projects - not the best, but he felt like he was one). He started because one of the developers suggested an idea at the team meeting and he felt he just needed to do it on his own. He failed, and he told the dev team about it. The dev team did what he failed to do in a few days. After that, the manager feels that team codes with out him perfectly and gets the job done in short time. He felt sorry and lost and he started to crash like an old bad PC. Firstly, he started to scream (in forms of messages not in voice) he tried to tell developers that what they were doing was a bad, not-needed thing - developers kindly told him that his "beginnings" were not compilable while dev team product worked as needed. He told the developers that all work they do should be firstly discussed with him. Here is the part where we need to mention that all team members are "project owners" and logically have equal rights. The team leader suggested to the developers these options: change their dev process to go through him, or be moved from project owners to contributers. So what are our options as developers? What arguments we can provide to the team leader/manager for him to calm down? Is it possible to save the project or is it better to fork out now? An important issue is that lately we had no active ticket system, and I personally think that this was the reason the mess appeared. So... any ideas?

• Big Companies Influence Retail in 2010

  From a retail industry perspective, 2010 will go down as the year mobile went mainstream, the economy recovered from the crash, and Facebook surpassed Google as the most influential online property. While the economy certainly had the biggest impact on the retail industry, a few big companies also exerted influence. Here's a rundown and a look back at 2010: Apple -- Steve Jobs and company continued to lead the mobile pack. The Next Technology from Apple Mobile Platforms in Retail Apple Stores, Touch2Systems, and the iPad Google -- Not to be outdone, Google's Android platform grew faster than Apple's, plus they support QRCodes natively and will probably beat Apple to NFC. Step Aside Google Leveraging Social Networks for Retail Social Shopping at Nine West Groupon -- This newcomer executed on a simple concept flawlessly, making them the fasted company to reach $1B in revenue. (See cool chart from Silicon Alley Insider.) Google's offer of $5-6B wasn't enough, so now they are raising an additional $1B in funding, presumably to buy-up all the copycats across the globe. Changing the Way We Shop Amazon -- As if leading the e-commerce charge wasn't enough, Amazon shook things up with their purchase of Woot and release of their Price Checker mobile app. They continue to push boundaries with Kindle, and don't seem worried about the iPad at all. You Can't Win on Price Amazon Looks at Your Social Graph eBay -- Acquiring Skype didn't exactly work out, but eBay's purchase of PayPal and RedLaser are driving the company forward. They are still a major force. Bump the Bill Oracle, SAP, HP, IBM, and Cisco left their marks on the retail industry as well with various acquisitions and CxO shake-ups. We'll just have to wait and see what 2011 brings next.
