  Moved from Home to work and went to fire up my project and after long pause "The provider did not return a ProviderManifestToken string" or even More Abscure ProviderIncompatable Exception Now after 20 mins of chasing my tail re different ver of EntityFramework 4.1 vs 4.2...blahblahblah Look inside at the inner exception A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible DOH!!!! Or a clean translation is that it cant find SQL or is offline or not running. SO check the power is on/Service running or as in my case Edit web.config & change back to Work SQL box   Hope you dont have this pain as the default errors @ the moment suck balls in the EntityFramework 4.XX releases   Cheers

• Google Chrome would not exist fullscreen mode

  I am running 64-bit Ubuntu 13.10, have latest stable google-chrome version 30.0.1599.114-1. Whenever I enter fullscreen mode by pressing F11, it would never exit this mode by pressing F11. Actually, I see it exit but then fullscreen mode is quickly restored. I searched for a solution, but nothing really helps. I even tried completely re-installing it with no luck. Any suggestions? Update: I tried completely removing ~/.config/google-chrome, it did not help. Update 2: I am running Cinnamon 2.0.6, maybe that would give some clues. Thanks, Nick.

These packages are available on your distribution's installation CD. And /mnt/hgfs is empty when sharing. If I run vmware-hgfsclient in a terminal, I get the list of shared folders but /mnt/hgfs is empty.

• Repacked proprietary software keeps updating the same deb

  I repacked a proprietary program delivered as tar file to a deb file for having a company wide repository. I used reprepro to set up a repository and signed it. A unix timestamp is faking a versioning numbering, so I can have different (real) versions installed at the same time. Almost everything works as expected. The deb file looks like this: mysoft8.0v6_1366455181_amd64.deb Only problem on a client machine it tries to install the same deb file over and over again because it thinks its an update.   Following my last posts on Change Data Capture and Change Tracking, here is another tip regarding tracking changes: table and colum checksums. The concept is: each time a column value changes, the checksum also changes. You can use this simple method to see if a table has changed very easily, however, beware, different column values may generate the same checksum. • forked-daapd without avahi

  I'm trying to setup forked-daapd, but i'd prefer it if i could run it without avahi (or rather define my own avahi service instead of using the dbus api). The reason is that i want a netatalk share for my time machine backups and a samba share for the symbolic link support (netatalk doesn't support symlinks). Those two are defined as different services in avahi. To make that work, i have to disable avahi's dbus api, or else netatalk tends to take over all the services (osx prefers afp over smb). If I now try to start forked-daapd, it just doesn't. Forked-daapd requires avahi's dbus api to be enabled and running. Is there some sort of way around this limitation, so that i can manually define my own daap service in avahi. Maybe something like enabling but ignoring the dbus in avahi, or launching a duplicate avahi daemon with a different config file?

• Change clock resolution to 1000 Hz

  I am running Ubuntu 12.04 and I need to change the clock resolution to 1000 Hz (now it's 250 Hz, the default value). I understand that I have to set it and then recompile the kernel, as for example described here. It's not clear, though, how I can do it from the terminal, as for instance the suggested make menuconfig won't work. Any tips?   Current configuration file is as follows: mainwindow.title = 'test' mainwindow.position.x = 100 mainwindow.position.y = 200 mainwindow.button.label = 'apply' mainwindow.button.size.x = 100 mainwindow.button.size.y = 30 logger.datarate = 100 logger.enable = True logger.filename = './test.log' This is read with python to a nested dictionary: { 'mainwindow':{ 'button':{ 'label': {'value':'apply'}, ... }, 'logger':{ datarate: {'value': 100}, enable: {'value': True}, filename: {'value': './test.log'} }, ... } Is there a better way of doing this? The idea is to get XML type of behavior and avoid XML as long as possible. The end user is assumed almost totally computer illiterate and basically uses notepad and copy-paste. Thus the python standard "header + variables" type is considered too difficult. The dummy user edits the config file, able programmers handle the dictionaries. Nested dictionary is chosen for easy splitting (logger does not need or even cannot have/edit mainwindow parameters).

• LIRC-ZILOG on ubuntu 12.04

The remote does not. I want the transmitter to work so it can automatically change the channel on the cable box and find the video I wanted to record. The LIRC sources are not on Ubuntu sources and so I can only guess at what commands I might have to use. How do I resolve the error and get the remote working?

• How do I disable changing proxy settings?

  I've got several machines, running 14.04.1, for kids to access. Each machine has accounts for each kid, as well accounts for several adults. Although I've set a system wide proxy use policy, it doesn't get used by Chrome. Instead, I had to log into each kids account and set a proxy use policy, pointing to tinyproxy/dansguardian, for safe internet access. The problem is that, should the kids get an ounce of computer savvy, they'll figure out that they can launch the proxy settings config panel from Unity, then change the proxy settings to None, and completely bypass the "safe" internet scheme I've setup. Can anyone tell me how I can disable those user accounts from being able to modify their proxy settings (not the "system wide" ones... those arent used.. this is the per-user settings). Thanks

• eGalax Touchscreen not working Jolicloud 1.2

  I have an eGalax touchscreen on an Acer Aspire One running Jolicloud 1.2 I have had success getting this touchscreen to work correctly on ubuntu 10.04NBR, 11.04 and Kubuntu 12.04 and Puppy Linux, so I am pretty happy with how it SHOULD be done. However, I cannot get it to calibrate correctly or remember calibration settings. I have installed the eGalax utility (all available versions) and it does not recognize the screen. Xinput_calibrator works but the config cannot be made permanent. Problems I have identified: -Joli doesn't have an xorg.conf file and does not use xorg.conf.d for evdev configuration -Setting configs through Hal doesn't work anymore The best I can get is a poorly adjusted touchscreen with a reversed Y axis. Any help greatly appreciated

• Windows 7 Virtual PC - &ldquo;RPC server unavailable&rdquo;

  I use Windows 7 Virtual PC on my current project and I often bring home the files, so I can work some in the evenings.  Since my VHDs are large, I’ll only copy the undo disks, saved state, and virtual machine config files from my external drive.  I copy them to a small portable drive and once I get home, I’ll copy them to a large external drive. I’ve done this for over a year, but recently I started getting an error when I tried to start the VPC after the copying was finished.  It would open the initial window with the progress bar, but eventually the bar would stop, turn red, and then the error “RPC server unavailable” would appear.  When I first started seeing these, I’d try again, but no luck. After some testing, it turns out that my small portable drive is apparently going bad, so it was corrupting the files.  Lucky for me, that I never overwrote my good copies with corrupted copies, at least not at both the office and at home.

• System Settings icons missing

  Is there any way to reset the System Settings Control Panel page? The Control Panel was fine, but the for no apparent reason, PRIVACY, BACKGROUND and a host of other icons have vanished... My system seems pretty messed up after the upgrade... Shutdown, Reset, and Logout from the menu no longer work either... However, I can launch the Privacy panel from the terminal: activity-log-manager and it runs... so why is this, and others, now missing from the System Setting Control Panel? I have checked and: activity-log-manager-control-center is installed Is there a config file I can check, or a setting in Gconf where the list of icons are referenced? I have run - in desperation - sudo apt-get purge unity* sudo apt-get purge ubuntu* sudo apt-get autoremove Run Gconf-cleaner and Janitor then re-installed all packages Still the same issue....?

• How should I trouble-shoot a frozen startup screen?

  The Problem: I'm running 10.04, and it suddenly started freezing after it boots. I can move the mouse, but I can't select anything. When the problem first started, there were only two things on the screen: 1. Gnome-Do 2. "Unlock Login Keyring" dialog box What I have done thus far: Asked myself if the keyboard was plugged in :-) Yes, it is. Tried to use ALT+F2 or CTRL+ALT+F1 per the "What Should I Do When Ubuntu Freezes" question. (Neither were responsive) Tried to reboot using the REISUB method (which did reboot, but I still had the same problem upon restart) Gnome-Do was in the autostart folder, and I removed it by deleting ~/.config/autostart/gnome-do.desktop Deleted my password keyring per this blog post Tried to kill and restart X with ALT+SysReq+K (Screen went black but X didn't restart) Tried to hit the Esc button What my screen is currently showing: My screen currently shows the "Choose password for new keyring" dialog box.

• Gnome panel hides window titlebar.

  I moved my laptop screen "below" external screen (was using left/right config before). There's a little problem. When my gnome panel is on top of laptop screen, all windows I maximize "drawn" under top gnome panel. Therefore, I cannot see window titlebar. I tried suggested fixes as metacity --replace and so on, but none worked. When I move my taskbar to bottom it works just fine. Any ideas? Thank you.

• MAAS fails to Commission nodes

  I'm evaluating MaaS/Juju. I followed instructions in this link http://maas.ubuntu.com/docs1.5/install.html to setup MaaS. I'm running this in Oracle VirtualBox environment so Power options are not configured for the VMs. PXE booting VM works fine. The node shuts down itself and registers with MaaS in Declared state. Issues: a) When I Commission the VM (which is in the Declared state), first it gets IP-Config: no response after 60 secs - giving up errors. (See link below for a screenshot). b) Fails to mount the boot device and drops into initramfs prompt. • Use hotplug and turn on/off PCI device for replacing NIC

  How can I turn off the PCI slots and change the device (especially NIC) without shutting the server down? I found a similar question (How do I turn off PCI devices?) but there are no /sys/bus/pci/slot and no files in /sys/bus/pci/slots. • Application development : method to manage backgound process

  I am developing an application with different behavior depending on the arguments : - "-config" starts a Gtk window to change options, start and close the daemon. - "-daemon" starts a background process that does something every X minutes. I already know how to use fork/system/exec etc... But I would like to know the main logic of such application to : - restart or refresh the daemon when configuration change. - keep only one instance of the daemon. I have red that killing the daemon to restart it is not a clean way to do. How other applications do ? (ubuntuone, weather forecast, rss feed working with notification area) Thanks for your help. PS : I don't want to create a system-wide daemon, just a user application with a background process.

  Our product is a web based course managemant system. We have 10+ clients and in future we may get more clients. (Asp.net,SQL Server) Currently if one of our customers need extra functionality or customised business logic, we will change the db schema and code to meet the needs. (we only have one branch code base and one database schema) To make the change wont affect each others route, we use a client flag, which defined in a web config file, thus those extra fields and biz logic only applied to a particular customer's system. if(ClientId = 'ABC') { //DO ABC Stuff } else { //Normal Route } One of our senior colleagues said, in this way, small company like us can save resources on supporting multiple resources. But what I feel is, this strategy makes our code and database even harder to maintain. Anyone there crossed similar situation? How do you handle that?

• Unable to download microsoft excel files from a IIS SSL site

  The web master at my corporation added SSL to the web site and now none of my users can download Microsoft word and xcel files the sites generates. According to Microsoft the following must be down. Web sites that want to allow this type of operation should remove the no-cache header or headers. Typical of MS they don't tell you what to do, how to do it, or what the best practice is. The web master says its a web config setting. But all i can finds is <configuration> <appSettings/> <connectionStrings/> <system.web> <httpRuntime sendCacheControlHeader="false"/> and I don't know if this is the best way to achieve the result. I would greatly appreciate some advice on this subject.

• Dropbox indicator icon dissapears right after login

  Even though Dropbox's app indicator dissapearing from the tray area seems like a recurrent enough problem, my issue is a litte different. When I login, I can see the app panel populating, and the dropbox icon does indeed appear (config'd as startup application), but after some other icons show up (bluetooth, battery, etc.) it's gone. It's still running though. I'm guessing it's having issues with staying pinned, and I don't know how to start addressing this problem. I have tried many if not all solutions provided here in the forums for the "icon missing" questions. So far: I've whitelisted everything regarding panel Uninstalled-reinstalled (with and without rebooting in between) Overwritten current installation Purged installation from terminal Installed from Software Center and from .deb file batch deleted every "dropbox" ocurrences from terminal (files and folders) and reinstalled Ran sudo apt-get install libappindicator1, it installed, but didn't solve anything I'm on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS - 64 bits. Any insight would me much appreciated!
