Are memory leaks ever ok?

Is it ever acceptable to have a memory leak in your C or C++ application? What if you allocate some memory and use it until the very last line of code in your application (for example, a global object's deconstructor)? As long as the memory consumption doesn't grow over time, is it OK to trust the OS to free your memory for you when your application terminates (on Windows, Mac, and Linux)? Would you even consider this a real memory leak if the memory was being used continuously until it was freed by the OS. What if a third party library forced this situation on you? Would refuse to use that third party library no matter how great it otherwise might be? I only see one practical disadvantage, and that is that these benign leaks will show up with memory leak detection tools as false positives.

Should I still use querystrings for page number, etc, when using ASP.NET 4 URL Routing?

I am switching from Intelligencia's UrlRewriter to the new web forms routing in ASP.NET 4.0. I have it working great for basic pages, however, in my e-commerce site, when browsing category pages, I previously used querystrings that were built into my pager control to control paging. An old url (with UrlRewriting) would be: http://www.mysite.com/Category/Arts-and-Crafts_17 I now have a MapPageRoute defined in global.asax as: routes.MapPageRoute("category-browse", "Category/{name}_{id}", ~/CategoryPage.aspx"); This works great. Now, somebody clicks to go to page 2. Previously I would have just tacked on ?page=2 as the querystring. Now, How do I handle this using web forms routing? I know I can do something like: http://www.mysite.com/Category/Arts-and-Crafts_17/page/2 But in addition to page, I can have filters, age ranges, gender, etc. Should I just keep defining routes that handle these variables, or should I continue using querystrings and can I define a route that allows me to use my querstrings like before?

Hi..I am using C#.Net and Sql Server ( Windows Application ). I had created a temporary table. When a button is clicked, temporary table (#tmp_emp_details) is created. I am having another button called "insert Values" and also 5 textboxes. The values that are entered in the textbox are used and whenever com.ExecuteNonQuery(); line comes, it throws an error message called "Invalid object name '#tbl_emp_answer'.". I have used the following code to get the document root. $path = get_file_dir(); function get_file_dir() { global $argv; return realpath($argv[0]); } Below code includes config.php and config.php has the $setuprun variable with a value. if((file_exists("$path/admin/config.php"))) { include_once "$path/admin/config.php"; } if($setuprun=="true") { //do some code } In my system, it takes the document root like /home/myname/myfolder and the variable $setuprun has the value and the code works perfectly. But in another user's system, it shows the following error. Notice: Undefined variable: setuprun in /usr/local/www/chat/setup.php on line 22. He is using FreeBSD 8.2 Stable with MySQL 5, PHP5 and Apache 2.2. Can anyone please help me to solve this error?

Returning std::vector by value

It is oft said that in C++11 it is sane to return std::vector by value. In C++03 this was mostly true as RVO should optimize away the copy. But that should scared most developers away. In C++11 will a returned std::vector local variable always be moved? What if that vector is a member of a local variable instead of a local variable itself? Obviously returning a global variable will not be moved. What other cases will it not be moved?

I've been using my own Error reporting module which was combination of simple c# and jQueryUI Dialog. Problem is that once error or success occurs i do write it's value to session. It does work pretty good on pages with Responce.Redirect on error but not on pages where i catch an error and then return to same form. My question is why does session which added pre-postback fails to load in pages where i have return statement on some condition. And if there another way to save errors and success message except in session ? Maybe global variables or something like that ...

Second one seems to be dead. I've noticed that during each request only single validator instance is created (for the first annotation). How to solve this problem and fire all attributes?

The definition is recursive so I cannot see any shortcuts except to calculate everything before the millionth number. How can you fast calculate millionth number in the serie? [AS 3.0] How to use the string.match method to find multiple occurrences of the same word in a strin

In Actionscript and Adobe Flex, I'm using a pattern and regexp (with the global flag) with the string.match method and it works how I'd like except when the match returns multiple occurrences of the same word in the text. In that case, all the matches for that word point only to the index for the first occurrence of that word. For example, if the text is "cat dog cat cat cow" and the pattern is a search for cat*, the match method returns an array of three occurrences of "cat", however, they all point to only the index of the first occurrence of cat when i use indexOf on a loop through the array. I'm assuming this is just how the string.match method is (although please let me know if i'm doing something wrong or missing something!). I want to find the specific indices of every occurrence of a match, even if it is of a word that was already previously matched. I'm wondering if that is just how the string.match method is and if so, if anyone has any idea what the best way to do this would be. Thanks.

Disable Products in different Magento Store Views

I have a Magento Multi-Store installation (not multi-site) and some products are available in more than one store. However, these products that are available in, let's say storeA and storeB, have related products, BUT, the related products are not available in both stores. The problem is this, Product1, which has Product2, Product3, and Product4 as related products, appears in storeA. No Problem. Product1 is also available in storeB, but NOT Product2-3-4. However, those products, though not shown in the general catalog of storeB, are visible as related products to Product1 in storeB. If I use the drop down to manage products in storeB, and I remove the related products in Product1, it removes the related products from Product1 in storeA, where they should be available. I cannot change the status attribute to storeview in Manage Attributes, because the only choices are Global or Website, not Store View. I can change the skin to show UPSELL products instead, and set up different UPSELL products, but that limits my stores to only two. Any ideas?

setTimeout is acting weird

I am trying to make a simple setTimeout, to make a div tag invisible after 2 seconds. The setTimeout function makes the div invisible but irregularly, sometimes immediately and sometimes after 1 sec, and so on. Access static constant variable from multiple threads in C

I have some experience with multithread programming under Linux (C/C++ & POSIX threads), however most obvious cases are sometimes very complicated. I have several static constant variables (global and function local) in my code, can I access them simultaneously from multiple threads without using mutexes? Because I don't modify them it should be ok, but it's always better to ask. I have to do heavy speed optimization, so even as fast operations as mutex lock/unlock are quite expensive for me, especially because my application is going to access these variables form long loops.

Drupal Imagecache Actions with ImageField and Node variables

I am able to add text to onto a imagefield using the imagecache textrender preset action (for a content type). I pull the node title using the following in the imagecache preset text: global $node; return $node->title; However this only works when an image is uploaded when creating new content. If I have an image set as a default for the content type (and none are added when creating the new page) then it won't overlay the node title. I tried just regular text in the preset action field on the default image and it worked. Can anyone help me with this?

I am using routes to determine localization. ie: if the url has es or fr in the route it will load either spanish or french resources. for example: www.someroute/es/checkstuff/checkstuff.aspx will load: www.someroute/checkstuff/checkstuff.aspx with the spanish resources. I have a lot of code in a class library that does not specify CultureInfo.InvariantCulture. For example in toString operations, toBool, toInt, etc. Is there a way I can get set a property for the class library to always execute using CultureInfo.InvariantCulture, even if it is not explicitly specified everywhere in the code? Sort of like a global switch? ActionScript Local X And Y Coordinates Of Display Object?

i'm trying to trace the x and y coordinates from within a sprite. i've added a rectangle to the stage: var rect:Rectangle = new Rectangle(10, 10, 200, 200); addChild(rect); adding a Mouse_Move event to the rect, i can trace mouseX and mouseY to receive the coordinates of the stage while moving over the rect, but how do i get the local x and y coordinates? so if i mouse over the very top left of the rect sprite, the mouseX and mouseY return 10 as the global coordinates, but how do i make it return 0 and the local coordinates of the sprite? i assumed localX and localY was what i was looking for, but this doesn't work: function mouseOverTraceCoords(evt:MouseEvent):void { trace(mouseX, mouseY, evt.localX, evt.localY); }

Hide Adsense on localhost

I have a site built in Ruby On Rails which has many ads in different templates and views. It is hard to actualy remove each ad between tests and deployments. I don't know whether Google approves many impressions (even if without clicks) on localhost. How do you deal with this issue? Maybe it is a good solution to set a variable/constant available everywere to enable/disable ads easily. Do you think it is a good solution? If so, how do I declare a global variable for views?

DataContext Doesn't Exist in Dynamic Data Project?

This is really annoying...and I know it is something extremely simple... 1. I create a new Dynamic Data project. 2. I add a LINQ-to-SQL class and drag and drop some tables onto the class. 3. I open the global.asax.vb and uncomment the line: DefaultModel.RegisterContext(GetType(YourDataContext), New ContextConfiguration() With {.ScaffoldAllTables = True}) I remove YourDataContext and replace it with the DataContext from my LINQ-to-SQL class: DefaultModel.RegisterContext(GetType(NorthwindDataContext), New ContextConfiguration() With {.ScaffoldAllTables = True}) I then try to debug/build/etc. and receive the following error: Type 'NorthwindDataContext' is not defined Why is it not defined? It seems like its not recognizing I created the DBML file.
