• How can I fix a shaky touchpad cursor in Ubuntu on my hp pavilion laptop?

  I recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my laptop and it works great, except after the initial reboot my touchpad cursor shakes violently when I hold my finger completely still on the pad.It works fine with a regular mouse plugged in. I couldn't find much scouting around the internet except that it might be that my touchpad doesn't have any dead zones? I am very new to Ubuntu and am fairly computer savvy, but I don't know a lot about using the terminal or anything like that, so if you could dumb down a fix for this as much as possible for me, I'd greatly appreciate it.

• Starting With Desktop Apps [closed]

  I've been programming for a while now. It is a great hobby for me! Actually, It's my only hobby! But I haven't really programmed in a specific area i.e. desktop, web, etc.. After a long while of research, I've decided to jump into making Desktop Applications. But how should I go about doing this? Are there languages that are used to do this, or is it possible to use Python, Perl, C, etc. to make vivid, "amazing-quality", "highly functional" Desktop Apps? Also, what are some good resources to begin learning this? Thanks!

• Encouraging business and team members to write more code

  I am really interested to hear any ideas or working practices that can be adopted to encourage our team of developers to write more code. A little background here is involves a team of varying disciplines, experience and qualities and the nature of the work has a large focus on bug fixes and business logic / data validation over writing lots of new greenfield code or even refactoring. We are attempting to move to a more Agile philosophy and really what would be great is to hear any ideas that can be sold to the team and / or the business with the aim of: Writing more new code to improve experience, abilities and increase exposure to newer and emerging patterns and practices. Energizing the effort of the team and inspire. Encouraging wider input of new ideas, patterns and practices from the team as a whole. I would be very interested (and grateful) to hear any ideas or examples of ideas that can help here. Thanks!

• Function keys on an external keyboard

  So I bought a keyboard for my laptop. Unfortunately, it doesn't have the function key (though I know many people say it's useless). On my laptop, I control volume with the function key and F9-11. How can I get the same functionality on my external keyboard? The advanced keyboard settings don't have an option related to the function key. More specifically, it would be great if I could map it to my 'Menu' key which I'm never going to use. Or is there a way to get full functionality without it?

  Music Player, just like Web Browsers are an important part of today's application repertoire, and not only for entertainment reason. Having tried a few Linux Player over the past years i come to wonder, which Players you prefer and what kind of Players are out there, that you suggest are worth looking into and why!! I used Rhythmbox for a long time, but "Jamendo and Magnatune" plugin are both no longer available in 11.10 and also my covers are not shown, since i stream my music folder from a second partition. aTunes is another great Player, but there are also some flaws which i contacted the developers about. It would be nice if you post some alternatives! --Thank you. Example: Name of Player: aTunes | Homepage Additional Info : aTunes is a java-based Music-Player for Linux/Unix/Windows and ... • How come many of the AppShowdown apps aren't available in Ubuntu anymore?

  After upgrading to 12.10 I've noticed that I can't install some of the nice apps created for the AppShowdown, such as: Cuttlefish Blubphone (Lightread also came out quite late in 12.10) It seems such a waste having these great new apps added to the repository, only to exclude them in the first next version. I'm wondering why aren't these apps automatically available in a newer version of Ubuntu. Is it simply that the API is so different that it requires major rewrites and programmer activity or is it some bureaucratic reason? Are there any plans to improve this process?

• How do I get my Mac to boot from an Ubuntu USB key?

  If you select "USB" and "Mac" on this download page, it gives a series of command line instructions to make a USB key which the MacBook will boot into Ubuntu from. I've followed them to the letter two or three times on different USB keys, and it doesn't work. There's a very great deal of technical discussion about EFI etc. but this set of instructions seems to suggest it should just work, but it doesn't. Help? I'm increasingly unhappy with the more locked-down approach Apple is taking, and I'd quite like to start using Linux with a view to transitioning over to using it as my main operating system, but booting from the CD takes forever, runs slowly and I'm really hoping to get it moving off USB. Can anybody help me?

• Ubuntu 12.04 ATI 6450

  Right now my video card isn't responding after the Ubuntu Logo is shown, (I see a black screen and that's it) I have installed ubuntu 12.04 AMD64 and if I remove the video card and use the VGA from the MOBO then I can use it with no problems, other data: 4 GB of ram 1333 500 GB WD AMD APU A6 3500 2,1 GHZ I forgot a couple of details, everything was working great until last night, when the light went off (I don't know if I'm explaining myself I'm from Argentina and english isn't my first language there was a power cut I meant) and then when it got back I used my pc until I went to bed (after upgrading) and this morning, when I woke up I had this problem for breakfast, I've been reading a little and I had a similar problem before and fixed it, but it was a system problem, a missing package or something, I don't remember, but here the only issue is that the video card doesn't give me image after the ubuntu logo.

• Google Voice API for .NET

  There is no official API for Google Voice. However, many of the operations are done via simple rest style http calls, so building one shouldn’t be too difficult. Digging deeper and rolling your own is always a great way to exercise your problem solving skills and learn new things. So I did just that. As of the time of writing this, I’m only implementing basic SMS send since that’s all I needed. I’m hoping to implement more functionality in the future. In my next post, I’ll be using the SMS functionality to implement 2 factor authentication with ASP.Net MVC.

  I have a question about designing MVC app architecture. Let's say our application has three main categories of views (items of type 1, items of type 2...). And we have three (or more in future) types of users - Admins, let's say Moderators and typical Users. And in the future there might be more of them. Admins have full access to app, Moderators can visit only 2/3 type of items, and Users can visit only basic type of items. Should I divide my controllers/views/whatever like this: Items "A", Items "B", Items "C", then make them 100% finished and at the end add access privileges? Pros: DRY option Cons Conditional expressions in views Or another options: Items "A" / Admin, Items "A" / Moderator / Items "B" Admin ...? Pros: Divided parts of application for specific user (is that pros?) Cons: A lot of repeated code I don't have great experience in planning such things so it would nice if you can give me some tips or links to learn something about it.

• NetBeans 7.1 Release Candidate (RC) 1 is here

  NetBeans 7.1 RC 1 is here. Grab it from the usual place! As previously discussed, NetBeans 7.1 has full JavaFX 2.0 support but also a lot in store for Java EE and Web developers (CDI in particular is very neat). One of my personal favorite feature is that Deploy on Save is now set by default on Maven projects. Maybe one important part that didn't get proper coverage so far is CSS 3 support, an important feature which can be used from both Java EE and PHP but also from JavaFX. Java Downloads of NetBeans 7.1 start at 69 MB and a 166 MB download will get you everything you need to start coding right away with Java EE - a great tool and a fully integrated runtime (GlassFish 3.1.1). You really need to be not using Maven, not be interested in recent standards (Java EE 6, Java SE 7, Java FX 2.0, ...) and like to hand-craft assemble your IDE to afford ignoring NetBeans nowadays.

  We have many great tools which helps a lot when programming, such as good programmers text editors, IDEs, debuggers, version control systems etc. Some of the tools are more or less "must have" tools for getting the job done (e.g. compilers). There are still always tools which do help a lot, but still don't get so much attention, for various reasons, for instance, when they were released, they were ahead of their time and now are more or less forgotten. • touchpad Detected but not working in Ubuntu 14.04 on toshiba satellite p75 a7200

  I have a toshiba satalite that I have just installed Ubuntu 14.04 on and it runs great. But the touchpad does not work. I plugged in a usb mouse and it worked fine but the laptop touchpad wont work. I tried everything I could find under the sun and it is detected and all and says its enabled but does not work. I have pressed fn f7 to enable the mouse and still nothing. Synaptics is installed im pretty sure to because I used synaptics --list or something like that and It worked fine.

• Screen rendering problems after upgrading to 12.10

  Since upgrading to Ubuntu 12.10 I'm suffering severe rendering issues in unity: Some parts of any application (for instance Firefox, or emacs, etc) are blank, or are not rendered, or are blinking. Some fonts in an application are not correct rendered, maybe only some part (see Eclipse screenshot). There is some shadows in desktop background. It's something that occurs from time to time (it's works great for hours and suddenly start to give this rendering problems). I was trying to find a bug in launchpad but without success. My card (using i915 module): 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:0042] (rev 02) I've tried to reset compiz/unity or gnome but does not help.   After spending a year and a half working on M, Ive decided to make another change in what Im doing and and move over to the SQL Server Programmability team. Thats the team responsible for things like the T-SQL language and runtime in SQL Server.
