• System.Drawing.Image for Images in Business Objects?

  Hi Folks I'd like to store an image in a business object. In MSDN I saw that the System.Drawing-namespace provides lots of GDI+-features, etc. Is it okay to store an Image in an System.Drawing.Image class in business layer (which is a class library "only"), and thus including a reference to System.Drawing too? I slightly feel just kind of bad doing that, 'cause it seems like I have UI-specific references in business code. Moreover, the code could become unnecessarily platform-dependant (though this is only a problem in theory, because we do not develop for multiple platforms). If it isn't right that way, which type would fit best? Thank you for any response! Matthias

• keep only GUI when converting vb6 app to c#?

  I have a large VB6 app which I want to convert to C#. The majority of the code in VB6 is quite badly written. I thought that a good strategy would be to keep the GUI design since it is adequate and would be a pain to recreate. But I would want to rewrite the code behind the GUI and the data layer. I could keep the GUI design by using one of the VB6 to .NET converters provided by Microsoft. Would this be a good strategy?

• Cyclic References and WCF

  I have generated my POCO entities using POCO Generator, I have more than 150+ tables in my database. I am sharing POCO entities all across the application layers including the client. I have disabled both LazyLoading and ProxyCreation in my context.I am using WCF on top of my data access and business layer. Now, When I return a poco entity to my client, I get an error saying "Underlying connection was closed" I enabled WCF tracing and found the exact error : Contains cycles and cannot be serialized if reference tracking is disabled. I Looked at MSDN and found solutions like setting IsReference=true in the DataContract method atttribute but I am not decorating my POCO classes with DataContracts and I assume there is no need of it as well. I won't be calling that as a POCO if I decorate a class with DataContract attribute Then, I found solutions like applying custom attribute [CyclicReferenceAware] over my ServiceContracts.That did work but I wanted to throw this question to community to see how other people managed this and also why Microsoft didn't give built in support for figuring out cyclic references while serializing POCO classes

• Implement a vpn

  I want to build an application client(client.exe) - server to do the following: when the clients run it they are thrown in a VPN and they can communicate each other within 1 applicataion. For example : clients run client.exe and they can see each other in LAN ONLY in Starcraft. From what i have read the right type of vpn for this situation is Secured Socket Tunneling Protocol: "Secure socket tunneling protocol, also referred to as SSTP, is by definition an application-layer protocol. It is designed to employ a synchronous communication in a back and forth motion between two programs. It allows many application endpoints over one network connection, between peer nodes, thereby enabling efficient usage of the communication resources that are available to that network. " Question: I don't have experience with networking programming so my question for the ones who have, is this the right approach? PS1: i don't want something done like OpenVpn, i do this as learning exercise. • Adding a SVN repository in Eclipse

  I'm trying to add an svn repository to eclipse. I've installed subclipse, and it seems to be working fine. But, when I try to "add a new SVN repository", I input this, for example: http://svn.python.org/projects/peps/trunk I get this: Error validating location: "org.tigris.subversion.javahl.ClientException: RA layer request failed svn: OPTIONS of 'http://svn.python.org/projects/peps/trunk': could not connect to server (http://svn.python.org) " Keep location anyway? I know that my eclipse can connect to the 'net because I downloaded subclipse earlier (I had to change my proxy settings). I get a similar message for other SVN locations I've tried to add. Anyone have any solutions?

• Design Patterns: What's the antithesis of Front Controller?

  I'm familiar with the Front Controller pattern, in which all events/requests are processed through a single centralized controller. But what would you call it when you wish to keep the various parts of an application separate at the presentation layer as well? My first thought was "Facade" but it turns out that's something entirely different. In my particular case, I'm converting an application from a sprawling procedural mess to a clean MVC architecture, but it's a long-term process -- we need to keep things separated as much as possible to facilitate a slow integration with the rest of the system. Our application is web-based, built in PHP, so for instance, we have an "index.php" and an IndexController, a "account.php" and an AccountController, a "dashboard.php" and DashboardController, and so on.

• Nibernate, DynamicProxy, and Spring AOP

  We have an Spring IOC managed application that uses NHibernate in its persistence layer. We have use the Spring AOP and understand its terminology and capabilities. We have some investment in Spring proxies. Now, we want to add a PropertyChangedMixin and a ValidatorInterceptor (not nhibernate validator, but based on Spring validation) onto our NHibernate managed objects. I've looked at the hooks for NHiberate IInterceptor and EventListeners and that gives me a place to apply the desired proxies. If I use the Spring proxies is it going to play nice with the existing nhibernate proxies. We don't lazy load. From the simple nhibernate stuff the benefits of DynamicProxy look appealing. I can go either way, but I'd like to hear suggestions. Thanks, jeff

• Can DBRefs contain additional fields?

  I've encountered several situations when using MongoDB that require the use of DBRefs. However, I'd also like to cache some fields from the referenced document in the DBRef itself. {$ref:'user', $id:'10285102912A', username:'Soviut'} For example, I may want to have the username available even though the user document is referenced. This would provide me all the benefits of a single document approach; Faster querying and eliminating the need to do manual dereferencing in my code. While at the same time allowing me to use references where they make sense. The idea being that when the referenced document is updated (a user changes their name, for example) my business layer can automatically update all the documents that reference it. Ultimately, I'm wondering if it's considered good form to store additional fields on my DBRefs? Will it break anything? Will I lose my data each time a reference is rewritten? Will drivers like pymongo support it?

• AS2 acts randomly when changing scenes on the first frame

  I have a flash movie containing to scenes: scene1, scene2. I have chosen the order so that scene1 starts first, I was requested to add a functionality to allow flashvars to be passed, if fv_change equals one then scene2 should be the first to appear when the movie is loaded. I have included the following code in scene1 first frame of some layer: this.onEnterFrame = function() { delete this.onEnterFrame; if (isset==undefined && _root.fv_change && _root.fv_change==1) { isset = true; gotoAndStop("scene2",1); } } when testing in my flash environment everything worked fine, when I exported it to an HTML & SWF combo I got random results, I refreshed the page several times and some of the times scene2 appeared and some of the times it stayed with scene1. Am I doing something wrong? what is the correct way to change scene order using AS2 and external data(flashvars for that matter).

Below I have code which works for lists - it is implemented in my service layer, but also I want to execute this code when I just get one item from the database and execute is as well in different services where I'm accessing Customers data as well. • Why does GetClusterShape return null when the cluster specification was retrieved through the GetClu

  Suppose I have a virtual earth shape layer called shapeLayer1 (my creative energy is apparently at an alltime low). When i call the GetClusteredShapes method I get an array of VEClusterSpecification objects that represent each and every one of my currently visible clusters; no problem there. But when I call the GetClusterShape() method it returns null... null! Why on earth would it do that? I used firebug to confirm that the private variable of the VEClusterSpecification that's supposed to hold a reference to the shape is indeed null so it's not the method that's causing the problem. Some have suggested that this is actually documented behavior Returns null if a VEClusterSpecification object was returned from the VEShapeLayer.GetClusteredShapes Method But looking at the current MSDN documentation for the VEShape class it says: Returns if a VEClusterSpecification object was returned from the VEShapeLayer.GetClusteredShapes Method Is this a bug or a feature? Is there any known workarounds or (if it is a bug) some plan on when they are going to fix it?

• Create a SOCKS Proxy that does nothing special

  I am trying to create a SOCKS proxy in C++ that runs as a background process on localhost. If the user's browser is configured to use the proxy, I want all HTTP requests to be passed along through the normal TCP/IP stack. i.e. The browser will behave exactly as it normally would. Eventually I will add another layer which will check to see if the requested resource matches certain criteria, and if so will handle the request differently. But for now I'm just trying to solve the basic problem... how to create a SOCKS proxy that doesn't change anything?

• Kohana PHP - Multiple apps with shared model

  I'm using Kohana 3 to create a website that has two applications, an admin application and the actual site frontend. I have separated my folders to have the two applications separated, so the hierarchy looks as follows: /applications /admin /classes /controller /... /site /classes /controller /.... My question is, how I need to go about creating a shared /model folder. Essentially, both the admin and site itself operates on the same data, so the database layer and business logic remains more or less the same. So to me, it makes sense to have a single model folder, sitting outside of the two application folders. Is it possible to achieve the following hierarchy: /applications /model --> Where model sits in a neatly generic location, accessible to all applications /admin /classes /controller /... /site /classes /controller /.... In the Backend i want to reorder the Images by Drag&Drop in an Gallery. It works, but for the Output i have the following Problem: I send the AJAX Request to index.php?option=com_cwgallery&controller=gallerie&task=ajax As i told you, it works, but i want to display the result in a Layer. But Joomla always sends the complete Template and the Result back. How can i disable sending the Admin Template??? Hope you understand what i mean? Thanks, Sascha

• JLayeredPane versus Container layering

  JLayeredPane allows one to stack multiple Components on top of one another using JLayeredPane.add(Component, Integer). Components in higher "layers" display on top of Components in lower "layers". Container.add(Component, int) provides a similar mechanism whereby Components with lower indexes display on top of Components with higher indexes. Please note that the first mechanism uses Integer and the second mechanism uses int. Also, one renders high values on top of low ones, and the other does the opposite. Do not mix the two :) My question is: what's the point of using JLayeredPane when Container already provides the same mechanism? Does one layer components better than the another? UPDATE: There is also Container.setComponentZOrder(Component, int) to consider.

• Simple ADO.NET C# Stored Procedure Generator

  I am using Visual Studio 2005, Sql Server 2005, C#, ADO.NET. We have a very large database and routinely adding new stored procedures. I am tired of writing the C# wrapper code for these stored procedures, seems like there should be some simple utility or Add In that would allow me to simply point to a stored procedure and generate some generic C# code. I am not looking for some big ORM or data access layer framework. The company I am doing this for is not interested in moving to something like that right now. Just wanting something to take the grunt work out of writing the C# wrappers around stored procedures. Again, prefer that we do not have to include in other 3rd party libraries, etc. Any ideas?

• Please suggest some alternative to Drupal

  Drupal propose completely different approach in web development (comparing with RoR like frameworks) and it is extremely good from development speed perspective. For example, it is quite easy to clone 90% of stackoverflow functionality using Drupal. But it has several big drawbacks: it is f''cking slow (100-400 requests per page) db structure very complicated, need at least 2 tables for easy content (entity) type, CCK fields very easy generate tons of new db tables anti-object oriented, rather aspect-oriented bad "view" layer implementation, no strange forward layouts and so on. After all this items I can say I like Drupal, but I would like something same, but more elegant and more object oriented. Probably something like http://drupy.net/ - drupal emulation on the top of django. P.S. I wrote this question not for new holy word flame, just write if you know alternative that uses something similar approach.

• MDB2 With SQL Express 2008

  Hi all, So basically here's my problem. I'm looking for a solution to allow us to connect with SQL Express 2008, while still using MDB2 as our database abstraction layer. I need something like this, mainly because we still need to be able to use MySQL and Postgres (and ORMs seem to be not an option at this point in time). Preferably, there would be a solution that works for both PHP5.2 and PHP5.3. At first I went down the php_mysql extension road... it seems, though, as though that is not available in PHP 5.3. php_pdo_mssql doesn't seem to be usable with MDB2, so that seems to be out. Finally, there's the MS developed 'SQLSRV' extension, and while it seems as though there was work on a MDB2 'extension' for it at one point, it doesn't seem to have ever made it into the main branch. Please... does anyone have any solutions for me?

Value '123' is already present." I know I entered a duplicated value but the question is HOW can I determine which the columnName that cause the error and re-write the error message entirely in different language I want to get the columnName and the wrong value thanks in advance

  In my domain layer all domain objects emit events (of type InvalidDomainObjectEventHandler) to indicate invalid state when the IsValid property is called. On an aspx codebehind, I have to manually wire up the events for the domain object like this: _purchaseOrder.AmountIsNull += new DomainObject.InvalidDomainObjectEventHandler(HandleDomainObjectEvent); _purchaseOrder.NoReason += new DomainObject.InvalidDomainObjectEventHandler(HandleDomainObjectEvent); _purchaseOrder.NoSupplier += new DomainObject.InvalidDomainObjectEventHandler(HandleDomainObjectEvent); _purchaseOrder.BothNewAndExistingSupplier += new DomainObject.InvalidDomainObjectEventHandler(HandleDomainObjectEvent); Note that the same method is called in each case since the InvalidDomainobjectEventArgs class contains the message to display. • Would an ORM have any way of determining that a SQLite column contains date-times or booleans?

  I've been thinking about using SQLite for my next project, but I'm concerned that it seems to lack proper datetime and bit data types. If I use DbLinq (or some other ORM) to generate C# classes, will the data types of the properties be "dumbed down"? Will date-time data be placed in properties of type string or double? Will boolean data be placed in properties of type int? If yes, what are the implications? I'm envisioning a scenario where I need to write a whole second layer of classes with more specific data types and do a bunch of transformations and casts, but maybe it's not as bad as I fear. If you have any experience with this or a similar scenario, how did you handle it?
