• learning the Lower levels of computing

  I am a software developer with four years experience in .Net development, I always like to keep up to date with the latest technologies (.net related normally) being released and love learning them. I didn't however go to university and learnt all I know through helpful colleagues, .Net courses, the internet and good old books. I feel that I am a good developer, but without learning the lower levels of a computer as you would in the first year of a computer related Uni course, I get lost when talking to people about a lot of more technical lower level computing. Is there a book(s) that anyone could recommend, that would cover the lower levels of what is going on when I click "Run" in Visual Studio? I feel out of my depth when my boss says to me "Thats running in the CPU cache" or "you're limited by disk reads there", and would like to feel more confident when talking about how the hardware talks to each other (CPU to RAM etc). Apologise if thats a vague question, or has been asked before (i did check and couldn't find anything on here that answers my question).

• jQuery won't parse my JSON from AJAX query

  Hi, I'm having difficulty parsing some JSON data returned from my server using jQuery.ajax() To perform the AJAX I'm using: $.ajax({ url: myUrl, cache: false, dataType: "json", success: function(data){ ... }, error: function(e, xhr){ ... } }); And if I return an array of items then it works fine: [ { title: "One", key: "1" }, { title: "Two", key: "2" } ] The success function is called and receives the correct object. However, when I'm trying to return a single object: { title: "One", key: "1" } The error function is called and xhr contains 'parsererror'. I've tried wrapping the JSON in parenthesis on the server before sending it down the wire, but it makes no difference. Yet if I paste the content into a string in Javascript and then use the eval() function, it evaluates it perfectly. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Anthony

• Strange HtmlUnit behavior (bug?)

Take a look at this: WebClient client = new WebClient(); WebRequestSettings wrs = new WebRequestSettings(new URL("http://stackoverflow.com/ping/?what-the-duck?"), HttpMethod.HEAD); client.getPage(wrs); Running this code results in throwing FileNotFoundException, because HTTP Status code on the page is 404 and getting the same page again with the GET method, with User-Agent set to Java-.... Why does it GET the page (it doesn't happen with "normal" status codes)? Is this a bug? • Setting up nHibernate with an Oracle database and Visual Studio 2010

  I'm creating a .ASPNET project and I would like to setup nHibernate as my ORM tool. I will be using an existing oracle database and Visual Studio 2010. ORM tools are very new to me and really could use any advice to better understand the tool and the process required to implement them. I've been following an article at http://nhforge.org/wikis/howtonh/your-first-nhibernate-based-application.aspx to learn about it and am stuck where they say to create a local database as mine only give me the option to create a SQL server database (perhaps this a new for visual studio 2010?). Is the purpose of this database just to cache results from the live database? Thanks for your help! Geoff

  In the iPod app on the iPhone there is a UIBarButtonItem in the upper right toolbar that flips between the song and track listings for the album. When you select the button, the button itself does a flip animation. • UIImages on UITableView?

  what is the best method to display about 300 png images into a UITableView.. i dont wanna display them at the same time... i have 3 tableViewControllers that will each display about 100 imgaes.. (its for a catalog so the images are important to display) i used [uiimage imageNamed:] but that method caches the images and they dont get released so the memory usage is big.... is there any way to release the cache when the nav controller pushes a different view controller? i also tried [uiimage alloc] initWithContentsOfFile] but the images wont display.... any help?

  I get the following error when downloading excel file in SSL site: Internet Explorer cannot download xxxx.aspx from mysite.com. Internet Explorer was not able to open this Internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later. After googling, I suspect that it's the problem of the response header. I try the solution in this page and set the header: http://trac.edgewall.org/ticket/1020 HttpContext.Current.Response.AddHeader("Pragma", "no-cache"); HttpContext.Current.Response.CacheControl = "private"; But it doesn't work. Any suggestions?

• How do I include 2 tables in LocalStorage?

  I've got a table that you can edit, and I've got a simple code saving that list when you're done with editing it. (the tables have the contenteditable on) The problem I've stumbled upon is that if I double click on enter, the table gets divided into two separate tables with the same ID. This causes the code I'm using to set the localStorage to only store one of the tables (I assume the first).. I've thought of different solutions and I wonder if someone could point out the pro's and con's (if the solutions even works that is). Make a loop that checks the page after tables and stores them into an array of localStorage-items.. I'd have to dynamically create a localStorage item for each table. Take the whole div that the tables are in, and store that in the localStorage, when a user revisits the page, the page checks after the items in storage and displays the whole divs. Any suggestions you have that can beat this :).. (but no cache, it has to be with the localStorage!) Thanks

• jQuery .ajax method in IE7 & IE6 not working but working fine in Firefox

My understanding is (correct me then and there) 1 ) MVC does not support server side events ,but supports client side events.if it supports client side events,i need html page with jQuery/Javascript (view),but most of the example i absorbed is to display the information(model) in view ,i did not see any client side event handling happens in view. 2) Except ViewState and controlState,MVC supports Sessions,Application State management,Cache management. 3) When request goes to MVC engine ,the routing module routes the request that is picked up by the controller.The controller in executes the appropriate action and return the appropriate view.

• OpenLayers, Layers: Tiled vs. single tile

  Each time we add a new layer to our OpenLayers based website (data provided primarily by a GeoServer server), we discuss whether to use a single-tile or a tiled approach. Some of the parameters we evaluate are the following: Using the tiled approach we get: Slow but continuous buildup of the viewport Lots of small images Client side caching possibilities Blocking of the loading pipeline (6 requests at a time) Jerky feeling when navigating during load Using the single-tile approach we get: Smoother feeling when navigating during load Time delay before layer is loaded One large image for each layer No caching of the single tile We have a lot of data editing in the layers, thus a tile-cache might not be that efficient. Are there any best-practices when it comes to tiling? • Prevent Ruby on Rails from sending the session header

  How do I prevent Rails from always sending the session header (Set-Cookie). This is a security problem if the application also sends the Cache-Control: public header. My application touches (but does not modify) the session hash in some/most actions. These pages display no private content so I want them to be cacheable - but Rails always sends the cookie header, no matter if the sent session hash is different from the previous or not. What I want to achieve is to only send the hash if it is different from the one received from the client. How can you do that? And probably that fix should also go into official Rails release? What do you think?

• Application Context in Rails

  Rails comes with a handy session hash into which we can cram stuff to our heart's content. I would, however, like something like ASP's application context, which instead of sharing data only within a single session, will share it with all sessions in the same application. I'm writing a simple dashboard app, and would like to pull data every 5 minutes, rather than every 5 minutes for each session. I could, of course, store the cache update times in a database, but so far haven't needed to set up a database for this app, and would love to avoid that dependency if possible. So, is there any way to get (or simulate) this sort of thing? If there's no way to do it without a database, is there any kind of "fake" database engine that comes with Rails, runs in memory, but doesn't bother persisting data between restarts?

• How to encorporate encyption to FlexPaper

  Is it possible to configure the FlexPaper reader to un-encrypt password-protected pdfs or swfs? Here is the use-case: User uploads a pdf My server would then convert the pdf to swf via pdf2swf Then somehow encrypt the swf with a password (not sure best way to do this) Then the FlexPaper would be able to un-encrypt the swf and display it What I am trying to avoid is the caching of readable swf in the browser's cache. Any ideas on the best way to achieve this? I know, even with this it will not be a fully secure solution, but certainly helps. Note: I am running this on Linux and OS X and using Rails. Thanks!   HI, I have a Test model, which has_many questions, and Question, which has_many answers... When I make a query for a Test with :include = [:questions, {:questions = :answers}] ActiveRecord makes two more queries to fetch the questions and then to fetch the answers - it doesn`t join them!!! When I do the query with :joins ActiveRecord makes the query, but later when I need the Test.questions or Test.questions.answers ActiveRecord makes again those 2 extra queries!!! And later when I enumerate the questions or answers in the log I see other queries for each object, but it has Cache tag... Is this normal?

• Streaming server required with JW Player?

  Currently, a site I developed plays mp3 files directly in JW Player using the file attribute and public URLs to the mp3 file. This is now an issue with the client for legal reasons, and they now need to stream the audio files so that the users can't open up their cache and nab the files directly after downloading. The JW player site has a bunch of examples for streaming video, but nothing for audio. Is it possible to stream audio files with JW player, and do we have to pay a lot of money for a streaming provider? Is it possible to do on the local php server?

• Thumbnails from HTML pages created and used automatically in web application

  I am working on a Ruby on Rails app that visualizes product trees. The tree is built of nodes an everything is rendered in HTML/CSS3. Some of the products make several hundred SQL queries as the tree builds up (up to 800 queries on the biggest tree). I'd like to have small thumbnails of each tree to present it on an index page. So rendering each tree once again and modifying CSS to make a tiny representation is an option. But i think it's probably easier to generate thumbnails, crop, cache, and show these on the index page. Any ideas on how to do this? Any links/articles/blog posts that could help me?

• problem showing pictures stored outside web root folder

  On a website users can upload pictures. For security reasons these are stored outside the webroot (public_html) folder. When I need to display the picture, I send the headers and have "readfile" read and output the picture data, like so: header("Pragma: public"); header("Expires: 0"); // set expiration time header("Cache-Control: must-revalidate, post-check=0, pre-check=0"); header('Content-type: image/jpg'); header('Content-Length: ' . $filesize); readfile($path_url . '/' . $photo); This works great, but the site is growing and this is starting to be a burden on the server. Question: is there a way to send the picture or picture data to the user, without the server first having to load the picture (obviously with the picture still being stored outside the webroot folder)? • Preload a lot of tiny pics

  I'm thinking about how to approach the problem at hand. There's a flash movie that requires a lot of relativly small images and I'm trying to optimize the time it takes for them to be preloaded. One thing I've considered it turning on KeepAlive in Apache on the server side. That works. But my mind still wonders if there's anything else ;-) So, what other approaches I may try? Is there a way to compress all those images and then unpack on client side? I have full control on both server and client side. Can even try installing something other than Apache. Cache is not an option because it already works and it's first time loading that bothers me here.

• EJB3 Caching Instance Variables

  Hi, I've noticed some strange code on a project I am working on - its a SLSB EJB3, and it uses a private instance variable to maintain a cache of data (it even calls it dataCache or something), with a getter/setter. For EJB2 and bellow, this was a typical EJB antipattern - SLSBs are not meant to retain state in between invocations, theres no guarantee you'll see the same data on a subsequent invocation. One of my colleagues said maybe its ok in EJB3 (we don't have much EJB3 experience), but still, its a Stateless Session Bean - why is it trying to maintain state, this doesn't make sense. Can anyone confirm if this is still a bad idea in EJB3 land, or if somehow it is ok? Thanks if you can help, Justin
