• Rails: Modeling an optional relation in ActiveRecord

  I would like to map a relation between two Rails models, where one side can be optionnal. Let's me be more precise... I have two models: Profile that stores user profile information (name, age,...) and User model that stores user access to the application (email, password,...). To give you more information, User model is handled by Devise gem for signup/signin. Here is the scenario of my app: 1/ When a user register, a new row is created in User table and there is an equivalent in Profile table. This leads to the following script: class User < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :profile end 2/ A user can create it's profile without registering (kind of public profile with public information), so a row in Profile doesn't have necessarily a User row equivalent (here is the optional relation, the 0..1 relation in UML). Question: What is the corresponding script to put in class Profile < AR::Base to map optionally with User? Thanks in advance.

  I'm a rails newbie, and I have a controller called resource_links that I've mapped to resources: resources :resources, :as => :resource_links, :controller => :resource_links And this works (basically /resources works as /resource_links). However, trying to go to /resources/tags does not work. To get around this, I added more mappings as: match 'resource_links/tag/:tag(.:format)' => 'resource_links#tag', :via => :get, :as => 'resource_links_tagged', :constraints => {:tag => /.*/} match 'resource_links/tags' => 'resource_links#tags', :via => :get, :as => 'resource_links_tags' Is there any way I can get /resources/tags to be mapped to /resource_links/tag?

• rails summing column values of rows with similar attributes

  Hi all, I have a Sites table that has columns name, and time. The name does not have to be unique. So for example I may have the entries 'hi.com, 5', 'hi.com, 10', 'bye.com, 4'. I would like to sum up all the unique sites so that i get 'hi.com, 15' and 'bye.com, 4' for plotting purposes. How can I do that? (For some reference I was looking at http://railscasts.com/episodes/223-charts but I couldn't get the following (translated to my table) to work def self.total_on(date) where("date(purchased_at) = ?", date).sum(:total_price) end nor do I really understand the syntax of the 'where("date(purchased_at) = ?", date)' part. • Rails layouts per action?

  I use a different layout for some actions (mostly for the new action in most of the controllers). I am wondering what the best way to specify the layout would be? (Consider like I am using 3 or more different layouts in the same controller) I don't like using render :layout = 'name' that much. I did like doing layout 'name', :only = [:new] but it turns out I can't use that to specify 2 different layouts (e.g. if I call layout 2 times in the same controller, with different layout names and different only options, the first one gets ignored - those actions don't display in the layout i specified). I'm using Rails 2.

• Targeting row when responding with js rails

  I have an application where a user can vote on reviews. They can vote up or down. Now when there's a listing of reviews, I have a problem targeting the review the user voted on. I'm using a respon_to block in my rails controller and responding with js. So for instance, I have a vote_up method, and a vote_up.js.erb template. in that template, I have the following: var id = $('article.comment').attr('id').split('_')[1]; alert("id: " + id); $('.votecomment_' + id).find('.score').html("<%= @review2.vote_total %>"); I'm just alerting the id. The problem is that the id always returns the value of the first review found on the page. How can I pass the context aka this, to javascript, so I can figure out which review to target?

• Rails - set POST request limit (file upload)

  I am building a file uploader for Rails, using CarrierWave. I am pretty happy about it's API, except that I don't seem to be able to cut file uploads that exceed a limit on the fly. I found this plugin for validation, but the problem is that it happens after the upload is completed. It is completely unacceptable in my case, as any user could take the site down by uploading a huge file. So, I figure that the way would be to use some Rack configuration or middleware that will limit POST body size as it receives. I am hosting on Heroku, as context. *I am aware of https://github.com/dwilkie/carrierwave_direct but it doesn't solve my issue as I have to resize first and discard the original large image.

  I have this in my Rails controller: def download_clip send_file "public/output.mp4", :type=>"video/mp4", :filename => "output.mp4", :disposition => 'attachment' end and in my HTML code I have this: <a href="download_clip/"></a> Now could somebody tell me why Firefox's download window will NOT pou up, but chrome downloads the file fine? Instead firefox opens a new window and starts playing the file. I WANT THE DOWNLOAD BOX to POPUP. I have spend too much time on it

  Let's assume we have two models linked with a 1-to-many relationship (like clients and invoices - a client can have many invoices). In a view of a 'client' (let's say the 'show' view), there is a form to capture an 'invoice'. I found 2 approaches: This form should be handled by the 'invoice' controller (method create), having client_id passed as a parameter This form should be handled by a new method in 'client' controller, probably a PUT method defined in routes.rb. Is there a 'Rails way', or both of them are good? Is there a preffered way? Thanks!

• Rails: How to preload a message to user

  I have a Rails based prelaunch site that has some rotating background images (which are important for selling the idea of the site) that are taking too long to load, such that the users are leaving the site before they load. The only thing they're seeing is the email submission box. What's a good way to show a message to the users that the site will take some time to load but then have that message disappear after a reasonable period of time. I'm guessing a jQuery fadeOut() with a timer, but I'm not sure how long to set the timer for, because I'm not sure at what time it would start counting. Any suggestions?

  I have a 'users' table which stores all of my websites users, some of which are technicians. The users table has a 'first_name' and 'last_name' field as well as other fields. The other table is called 'service_tickets' which has a foreign key from users called technician_id. This gives me a real problem because when I am looking at the service_tickets table, the related user is actually a technician. That's why the service_tickets table has a technician_id and not a user_id field. I am trying to accomplish something like this: t = service_ticket.find_by_id(7) t.technician.first_name # notice how I don't do t.user.first_name Is this possible in rails? I can't seem to get it to work... Thank you for your help!

I have stored some short bits of JavaScript that I need to insert into the template without it automatically encoding the string?

• How do I develop browser plugins with cross-platform and cross-browser compatibility in mind?

  My company currently has a product which relies on a custom, in-house ActiveX control. The technology it employs (TWAIN) is itself cross-platform by design, but our solution is obviously limited to Internet Explorer on Windows. Long term we would like to become cross-browser and cross-platform (i.e., support other browsers on Windows, support the Macintosh or Linux). Obviously if we wanted to support Firefox on Windows I would need to write a plugin for it. But if we wanted to support the Macintosh, how do I attack that? Is it possible to compile a version of the Firefox plugin that runs on the Mac? Would I be remiss to not also support Safari on the Mac? Are there any plugins which are cross-browser on a platform? (i.e., can any browsers run plugins for other browsers) Since TWAIN is so low-level to the operating system, I do not think Java would be a solution in any capacity, but I could be wrong. What do people generally do when they want to support multiple platforms with a process that will need to be cross-platform and cross-browser compatible?

• Setting up magic routes for plugins in CakePHP 1.3?

  I'm working on upgrading my project from CakePHP 1.2 to 1.3. In the process, it seems that the "magic" routing for plugins by which a controller name (e.g.: "ForumsController") matching the plugin name (e.g.: "forums") no longer automatically routes to the root of the plugin URL (e.g.: "www.example.com/forums" pointing to plugin "forums", controller "forums", action "index"). The error message given is as follows: Error: ForumsController could not be found. Error: Create the class ForumsController below in file: app/controllers/forums_controller.php <?php class ForumsController extends AppController { var $name = 'Forums'; } ?> In fact, even if I navigate to "www.example.com/forums/forums" or "www.example.com/forums/forums/index", I get the same exact error. Do I need to explicitly set up routes to every single plugin I use? This seems to destroy a lot of the magic I like about CakePHP. I've only found that doing the following works: Router::connect('/forums/:action/*', array('plugin' => 'forums', 'controller' => 'forums')); Router::connect('/forums', array('plugin' => 'forums', 'controller' => 'forums', 'action' => 'index')); Setting up 2 routes for every single plugin seems like overkill, does it not? Is there a better solution that will cover all my plugins, or at least reduce the number of routes I need to set up for each plugin?

  Possible Duplicate: What are PATH and other environment variables, and how can I set or use them? I have the default package of Ruby installed that shipped with the OS, which is an older version. I have recently installed MacPorts with the latest Ruby version which is installed in a seperate location:- /opt/local/bin/ But when I run which ruby I get /usr/bin/ruby Is there any way to edit the path of the command ruby so it would reference the new installation in the /opt/ directory?   Hello everyone. Please don't bit my for my misunderstanding. The sessions are very new for me, and i have some problems. Okay i read many information about sessions and especially rails session. But this don't give me right imagine about sessions. Did i understand right, when users send request to server (get) - Server create a new session (and store this some file in hard drive with session id), session id - is a random generated num? so, server create a new session (and store session on drive) after this server send back answer to client and set session_id in cookies? • Stable/repeatable random sort (MySQL, Rails)

  I'd like to paginate through a randomly sorted list of ActiveRecord models (rows from MySQL database). However, this randomization needs to persist on a per-session basis, so that other people that visit the website also receive a random, paginate-able list of records. Let's say there are enough entities (tens of thousands) that storing the randomly sorted ID values in either the session or a cookie is too large, so I must temporarily persist it in some other way (MySQL, file, etc.). Initially I thought I could create a function based on the session ID and the page ID (returning the object IDs for that page) however since the object ID values in MySQL are not sequential (there are gaps), that seemed to fall apart as I was poking at it. The nice thing is that it would require no/minimal storage but the downsides are that it is likely pretty complex to implement and probably CPU intensive. My feeling is I should create an intersection table, something like: random_sorts( sort_id, created_at, user_id NULL if guest) random_sort_items( sort_id, item_id, position ) And then simply store the 'sort_id' in the session. Then, I can paginate the random_sorts WHERE sort_id = n ORDER BY position LIMIT... as usual. Of course, I'd have to put some sort of a reaper in there to remove them after some period of inactivity (based on random_sorts.created_at). Unfortunately, I'd have to invalidate the sort as new objects were created (and/or old objects being removed, although deletion is very rare). And, as load increases the size/performance of this table (even properly indexed) drops. It seems like this ought to be a solved problem but I can't find any rails plugins that do this... Any ideas?   My antivirus ( ESET) hanged some day ago, and that brought down its outlook plugin as a result. So when I tried to launch outlook, I would get a message, saying that outlook cannot launch. After I did this a few times, the outlook asked me whether agree to disable all the plugins, which I clicked yes. The problem now is that after I restart my pc, ESET is working fine, but the Outlook is no longer loading any of my plugins. Is there anyway to tell OUtlook to load the plugins?

  I've been reading alot of forum posts, tutorials, etc., about setting up apache under linux with fastcgi. I'm trying to run fcgi for some of my ruby development (not rails), but I figure it should apply to any language. Please note that I already have apache, fastcgi, ruby-fcgi, and the like already installed on my web box. Conceptually, I'm having a hard time with it. Does apache spawn the specified fcgi processes as needed? Do I start them along side apache? Basically, I'm trying to get to a point where I am able to ask the proper questions, so apologies if the title is misleading.

  Hi there. I have a program that is extendable by plugins using the Microsoft Extensibility Framework. But i dont want untrusted sources to give out plugins that may be insecure. So i want to sign the plugins (maybe with Visual Studio's built in signing) and check if the plugins are trustworthy at program start. I didn't find a way to check DLL signing from inside C#. And also there is the problem, that I load the plugins with a DirectoryCatalog. There is no way to tell, which plugin is from which file. Anyone knows a way to do this? Thanks for any help, Marks

  I am looking for a way to set up Google Chrome so that it will run a certain plug-in (Java, what else?) only on whitelisted sites, but other plug-ins (like the PDF viewer) everywhere. From playing with the policies available for Chrome, I think there are basically two levels of plug-in management: List of disabled plugins/enabled plugins: Controls whether a plug-in exists for the browser at all This pair of policies applies to plug-ins, but not to sites. Default plug-in settings/Allow plug-ins on sites: Controls on which sites plug-ins can run This set of policies applies to sites, but not to individual plugins, and it cannot override the first pair. There appears to be no way to configure Chrome so that some plug-ins only run on whitelisted sites, but others run everywhere by default. I have also looked at filtering content on the firewall/proxy level, but I'm not convinced it can be done securely there.
