  • What tools do you use to share knowledge amongst developers in your company?

    - by Chris Ross
I'm looking for some good tools that help to share tips, best practices, company standards, etc. amongs developers in my company. Two tools I'm currently considering are a wiki (screwturn wiki) or Sharepoint 2010. I'm wondering if there is something better suited to the task, or any input anyone has on this subject. I'd prefer something that's windows based (i.e. runs on IIS, can authenticate users against Active Directory etc) but I am open to anything.

  • Is it appropriate to use non-ASCII (natural-language) XML tags?

    - by Vladimir Alexiev
Is it appropriate to use XML tags (element names) written in non-ASCII natural languages? The XML spec allows it (see Names and Exceptions), but I couldn't find any best practices about this at W3C and related pages. What I'm looking for is practical advice regarding which tools support this, whether important XML-related technologies such as XSLT and XForms may have problems with it, etc.

  • Generating text file from database

    - by Goldmember
I have a requirement to hand-code an text file from data residing in a SQL table. Just wondering if there are any best practices here. Should I write it as an XMLDocument first and transform using XSL or just use Streamwriter and skip transformation altogether? The generated text file will be in EDIFACT format, so layout is very specific.

  • Data access layer using Linq to SQL

    - by Andrei Tanasescu
I am building a c# - linq - sql server winforms/asp.net application, accessing a database. I would like my business logic layer to be easily testable, and that means not littering it with Linq database queries everywhere. What design patterns/ best practices are available for the following use cases - inserting/updating a new object - searching for an object - loading a bunch of related data into a sort of "presentation" object that could be displayed by various views ?

Anyway, I'd like to know if there's any real-life example (with sources) of NHibernate in C#, to learn best practices etc.? I know all of them are probably covered in the docs, but working example helps a lot understanding the proper development pattern.

  • Tools and tips for switching CMS

    - by Jimmy
I work for a university, and in the past year we finally broke away from our static HTML site of several thousand pages and moved to a Drupal site. This obviously entails massive amounts of data entry. What if you're already using a CMS and are switching to another one that better suits your needs? How do you minimize the mountain of data entry during such a huge change? Are there tools built for this, or some best practices one should follow?

  • Why use Hibernate/nHibernate?

    - by ProgrammingPope
I have found myself doing a lot of work to get nHibernate setup and am left wondering: Why use a framework like Hibernate/NHibernate? I am sure that quite a few people love the framework but I am unclear on the advantages and disadvantages. What are the advantages and disadvantages of lazy loading, and are there other features to Hibernate? Is there anything that makes a framework like this easier to use (best practices, other frameworks, etc)?

  • JSF 2.0 sample or open source application

    - by Theo
Does anyone know a complete JSF 2.0 sample or open source application using JSF 2.0 features (Facelets, Composite Component, Templates, Ajax, Navigation, etc.). Would be a good reference to learn some best practices. I'm talking about an application that you would also use in production. The only ones I know are ScrumToys and PetCatalog which are delivered with NetBeans 6.9 and are "tutorial-like" applications.
