• JSR Updates - Multiple JSRs migrate to latest JCP version

  As part of the JCP.Next reform effort, many JSRs have migrated to the latest version of the JCP program in the last month.  These JSRs' Spec Leads and Expert Groups are contributing to the strides the JCP has been making to enable greater community transparency, participation and agility to the working of the JSR development through the JCP program. Any other JSR Spec Leads interested in migrating to the latest JCP version, now JCP 2.9, as of 13 November, incorporating the Merged Executive Committee (EC), see the Spec Lead Guide for instructions on migrating to the latest JCP version.  For JCP 2.8 JSRs, you are effectively already operating under JCP 2.9 since there are no longer two ECs.  This is the difference for JCP 2.8 JSRs migrating to JCP 2.9 -- a merged EC.  To make the migration official, just inform your Expert Group on a public channel and email your request to admin at jcp.org. • Why can't I compile this version of Postfix?

  I just installed postfix 2.7.11 in Ubuntu server from source code. I do not use the ubuntu own one because I need the old version. I found a very interesting problem. Before, in both CentOS 5 and 6, I can build the source code without any problem. But, in Ubuntu server 12.04 is totally different. I got the following problems: dict_nis.c:173: error: undefined reference to 'yp_match' dict_nis.c:187: error: undefined reference to 'yp_match' dns_lookup.c:347: error: undefined reference to '__dn_expand' dns_lookup.c:218: error: undefined reference to '__res_search' dns_lookup.c:287: error: undefined reference to '__dn_expand' dns_lookup.c:498: error: undefined reference to '__dn_expand' dns_lookup.c:383: error: undefined reference to '__dn_expand' Yes, this reason is obviously. I just search related library and add it to the makefile. It works. The question is why? What is the difference between Ubuntu Server and CentOS? One possibility is gcc and ld version. Ubuntu server use different version of gcc and ld with CentOS. But I am not sure.

• Custom Buttons in Android: How to get border/edge/frame when I read the background from xml?

  Hi, Using Android Shapes in xml I have defined a gradient which I use as the background for a button. This all works nice, but there's no edge surrounding the button. I would like it to look similar to the normal Android button but I need more flexibility to control the color and look. The shape is defined as follows: I would expect the border to be set in the xml. Why doesn't "stroke" fix it? Stroke doesn't seem to do anything. I checked the Android Developer spec, but couldn't find the answer there: http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/resources/drawable-resource.html I have also looked through all the properties of the Android Button, but as expected there's no such parameter, probably since it's built into the normal Android button. Btw, I checked ImageButton properties too. Can someone please help? I know there's the alternative to make an image with proper edges and use an ImageButton, but there really should be a way to fix this programmatically. Thanks! Anna

• What version-control system is most trivial to set up and use for toy projects?

  I teach the third required intro course in a CS department. One of my homework assignments asks students to speed up code they have written for a previous assignment. Factor-of-ten speedups are routine; factors of 100 or 1000 are not unheard of. (For a factor of 1000 speedup you have to have made rookie mistakes with malloc().) Programs are improved by a sequence is small changes. I ask students to record and describe each change and the resulting improvement. While you're improving a program it is also possible to break it. Wouldn't it be nice to back out? You can see where I'm going with this: my students would benefit enormously from version control. But there are some caveats: Our computing environment is locked down. Anything that depends on a central repository is suspect. Our students are incredibly overloaded. Not just classes but jobs, sports, music, you name it. For them to use a new tool it has to be incredibly easy and have obvious benefits. Our students do most work in pairs. Getting bits back and forth between accounts is problematic. Could this problem also be solved by distributed version control? Complexity is the enemy. I know setting up a CVS repository is too baffling---I myself still have trouble because I only do it once a year. I'm told SVN is even harder. Here are my comments on existing systems: I think central version control (CVS or SVN) is ruled out because our students don't have the administrative privileges needed to make a repository that they can share with one other student. (We are stuck with Unix file permissions.) Also, setup on CVS or SVN is too hard. darcs is way easy to set up, but it's not obvious how you share things. darcs send (to send patches by email) seems promising but it's not clear how to set it up. The introductory documentation for git is not for beginners. Like CVS setup, it's something I myself have trouble with. I'm soliciting suggestions for what source-control to use with beginning students. I suspect we can find resources to put a thin veneer over an existing system and to simplify existing documentation. We probably don't have resources to write new documentation. So, what's really easy to setup, commit, revert, and share changes with a partner but does not have to be easy to merge or to work at scale? A key constraint is that programming pairs have to be able to share work with each other and only each other, and pairs change every week. Our infrastructure is Linux, Solaris, and Windows with a netapp filer. I doubt my IT staff wants to create a Unix group for each pair of students. Is there an easier solution I've overlooked? • Looking for Recommendations on Version Control System with Intuitive (.NET) API?

  I'm working on a project which generates (composite) Microsoft Word documents which are comprised of one or more child documents. There are tens of thousands of permutations of the composite documents. Far too many for users to easily manage. Users will need to view/edit the child documents through the app which hides all of the nasty implementation details. A requirement of the system is that the child documents must be version controlled. That is what has been tripping me up. I've been torn between using an off-the-shelf solution or rolling my own. At a minimum, the system needs to support get latest, get specific version, add new, rename and possibly delete. I’ve whiteboarded it enough to realize it won’t be a trivial task to create my own. As far as commercial systems I have VSS and TFS at my disposal. I've played with the TFS API some, but it isn’t as intuitive or well documented as I had hoped. I'm not averse to an open source solution (e.g. SVN), but I have less familiarity with them. Which approach or tool would you recommend? Why? Do you have any links to API documentation you would recommend? Environment: C#, VS2008, SQL Server 2005/2008, low volume (a few hundred operations per day)

• Android save Checkbox State in ListView with Cursor Adapter

  I cant find a way to save the checkbox state when using a Cursor adapter. Everything else works fine but if i click on a checkbox it is repeated when it is recycled. Ive seen examples using array adapters but because of my lack of experience im finding it hard to translate it into using a cursor adapter. Could someone give me an example of how to go about it.   Hi... Two questions: Is there a simple way to do the Curl page flipping animation? A Curl animation is animation of pages flipping, including the page above rolling and the shadows over the lower page. What is the recommended way to do a "gallery" that displays two pages at a time (just like a book)? Is it: Letting the adapter display a linear layout of two images at a time? (it won't let me show a page flipping over the other like a book) Using two pages, placing somehow one near the other, and then when it's time to animate -move the next two pages over? • Android ListView setSelection() does not seem to work.

  I have a ListActivity that implements onListItemClick() and calls a doSomething() function of the class. The latter contains l.setSelection(position) where l is the ListView object. Now there is a onClickListener() listening for a button click that perfoms some actions and that too calls doSomething(). In the first case, the selected item get positioned appropriately, but in the latter, nothing happens. Any clues about this strange behaviour and how I might make it work?

• Null Validation on EditText box in Alert Dialog - Android

I want to add some validation so that if what they have entered is blank or null, it does not do anything apart from creating a Toast saying error.   Hi everybody, I know that there have quite a lot of answers to similar questions but I couldn't find any solution to my question, so new topic : I'm creating a listview, with one basic view per row, my try is to change the background color of the view by .setbackgroundcolor, but nothing's doing the trick... I define an array of color at the beginning of my resources and i'm trying to display it, I also tried to put the array in the class, write the color like #00FF00, int, and I wanted to try 0x...... but as my colors are in an array, I can't do 0x+myColorsArray[i] because Eclipse tells me that it's not a proper hex color... I'm getting a bit desperate... thanks for any help

• Android ListView with Checkbox: automatically unchecks

  Hi, I've got a ListView with a custom BaseAdapter. The list items contain CheckBoxes that need to represent a property from a database. I use CheckBox.setOnCheckedChangeListener with a new OnCheckedChangeListener to detect changes, so I can change the database based on the current state of the CheckBox. Pretty straightforward stuff so far. However, when scrolling further down the list, previously checked CheckBoxes get unchecked. I suspect this happens as soon as the views are recycled (I'm using the convertView/ViewHolder technique). How can I stop this? What's going wrong? Thanks in advance. Edit: To make things a bit clearer, the problem is that recycling views somehow calls OnCheckedChangeListener#onCheckedChanged(buttonView, isChecked) with isChecked == false.

• Get content uri from file path in android

  Hi, I know the absolute path of an image (say for eg, /sdcard/cats.jpg). Is there any way to the content uri for this file ? Actually in my code I download an image and save it at a particular location. In order to set the image in an ImageView currently I open the file using the path, get the bytes and create a bitmap and then set the bitmap in the ImageView. This is a very slow process, instead if I could get the content uri then I could very easily use the method ImageView.setImageUri(uri) Thanks

• Android Canvas Coordinate System

  I'm trying to find information on how to change the coordinate system for the canvas. I have some vector data I'd like to draw to a canvas using things like circles and lines, but the data's coordinate system doesn't match the canvas coordinate system. Is there a way to map the units I'm using to the screen's units? I'm drawing to an ImageView which isn't taking up the entire display. If I have to do my own calculations prior to each drawing call, how to I find the width and height of my ImageView? The getWidth() and getHeight() calls I tried seem to be returning the entire canvas size and not the size of the ImageView which isn't helpful. I see some matrix stuff, is that something that will work for me? I tried to use the "public void scale(float sx, float sy)", but that works more like a pixel level zoom rather than a vector scale function by expanding each pixel. This means if the dimensions are increased to fit the screen, the line thickness is also increased. Update: After some research I'm starting to think there's no way to change coordinate systems to something else. I'll need to map all my coordinates to the screen's pixel coordinates and do so by modifying each vector. The getWidth() and getHeight() seem to be working better for me now.   Hi there. I need to decode HTML entities, e.g. from &#246; to ö, and &amp; to &. URLEncoder.decode(str) does not do the job (convert from % notations). TextUtils has a HTMLencode, but not a HTMLdecode. Are there any function for decoding HTML entities? Regards, Johan

• sqlite3 permission denied android

  Hi, I'm trying to access the database of the application I'm developping directly on my Nexus, but I get a "permission denied" when I tried to execute the "sqlite3" command. I also tried to start the adb in root mod, but again, permission denied on the device... I guess I will have to do that with the emulator but I have a lot of data to load and it would have been 10 times faster with the phone on Wifi than the emulator... Unless someone has any idea? thanks

• Android: onKeyDown() problem

  Hi, I would like to create a photo/video capture application. I have created a CaptureView class which extends SurfaceView and placed it in the main form. The main form's activity has onCreateOptionsMenu() method which creates a menu. The menu worked fine but then I tried to implement a method onKeyDown: @Override public boolean onKeyDown(int keyCode, KeyEvent event) { if(event.getAction() == KeyEvent.ACTION_DOWN) { switch(keyCode) { case KeyEvent.KEYCODE_CAMERA: videoPreview.TakePicture(); return true; } } return super.onKeyDown(keyCode, event); } The menu doesn't appear anymore and the method doesn't catch onKeyDown event. Does anyone know what could be the reason for this issue? Thanks!

  In my app, I start an activity and then on button click, display an http url (using Intent - VIEW_ACTION) So when in the middle of the activity, if the user clicks the button called "Google", it opens up google.com in the browser. When I hit the back button, it comes back to my original activity screen. How can I get my activity to resume from where it left of? Thanks George

To create balloon effect, i am using customize view and using geopoints with MapView.LayoutParams to display it at particular location. overlayitem's icon and baloon both having same geopoint thats why they both are overriding eatch other. • Android ProgressBar.setProgressDrawable only works once?

  In a color picker, I have 3 SeekBars for Hue, Saturation, and Value. Calling setProgressDrawable on these SeekBars only works once -- at initialization from onCreate. When the user updates the Hue SeekBar, I want to call setProgressDrawable for the Saturation and Value SeekBars, to show the user their color choices for the new Hue. But all calls to setProgressDrawable (after the initial ones from onCreate) cause the SeekBar to be blanked. How can I update the background gradient of my SeekBars based upon user input? Thanks!
