  I am facing a problem while trying to install Java 7 on Ubuntu. The following are the steps that I performed for installing: I installed the setup file from the link given below: wget http://download.oracle.com/otn-pub/java/jdk/7u1-b08/jdk-7u1-linux-x64.tar.gz I have a file: jdk-7u1-linux-x64.tar.gz I Untared it: tar -xvf jdk-7u1-linux-x64.tar.gz sudo mv ./jdk1.7.0_01 /usr/lib/jvm/jdk1.7.0_01 sudo update-alternatives –config java Here it gave me the following output: There is only one alternative in link group java: /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/bin/java Nothing to configure. sudo update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/java java /usr/lib/jvm/jdk1.7.0_01/jre/bin/java 1(I entered 1 here.) sudo update-alternatives --config java java -version. It showed the following output java version "1.6.0_26" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_26-b03) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.1-b02, mixed mode) I am not sure if jdk1.7.0 is installed as its showing the version as 1.6.0_26.

• A Linux DHCP server that will listen on an non-broadcast (tap) interface?

  Are there any Linux DHCP servers that will listen to what Cisco calls an "unnumbered" interface, or what others might call a "NBMA" (non-broadcast) interface. I have a Linux system that connects to a number of others using GRE tunnels. The machines on the other end send DHCP requests to this machine, I can see them with tcpdump. However, ISC DHCP 3.0.3 refuses to listen to the interface because it is non-broadcast. • Installation problems with Gimp 2.8 on Kubuntu 12

  I've just upgraded to Kubuntu 12.04 and having problems installing Gimp 2.8, I was wondering if anyone can help me? I've followed these instructions: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:otto-kesselgulasch/gimp sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install gimp but get this error: The following packages have unmet dependencies. gimp : Depends: libwebkitgtk-1.0-0 (>= 1.3.10) but it is not going to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.   I bought new motherboard Intel DH67GD which has not IDE interface to attach the DVD writer. • Facebook shared links not opening (Redirecting correctly) [on hold]

  I have been in a problem and after hours of searching find nothing useful to counter it. I have a website, and that website has RSS feed attached to facebook page. As I post the content to website it also appears on facebook page. But I have people complaining on my page that my posts don't open when they click the link to read the details. Since I am a Chrome user and didn't notice this happening for months. But as I checked it through firefox and Internet Explorer, I found the links shared actually don't open with these browswers. They only work in Chrome, means they are properly redirected in chrome browser and not in firefox and IE. Whenever I click on links of posts on my page through IE or firefox the url does not simply redirect to my website and I get to see nothing as if I am not connecting to Internet. When examining URL I see this: http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2F112NVO9&h=EAQHDgTUv&s=1 Which shows that facebook is not redirecting the links properly. Moreover I also use link shortening service bit.ly to shorten my shared links. I have checked same problem exists even if I don't shorten my links. And I checked I am not alone, even the tech giant website mashable.com links also don't open in IE and FF from facebook, they only open in Chrome. From mobile phone the links don't open (redirected properly) even in chrome. Can anyone tell me what is the issue? Nothing much is written about it on Internet as no once has faced this problem. P.S: I have checked from different systems, the problem persists.

• Problems with wired ethernet connection Ubuntu 11.10

  After some partition shuffling, I've got a problem on my 11.10 system. The wired ethernet interface fails to come up, although the wireless interface is working. I'm using NetworkManager. I thought this may be a problem with NetworkManager, so I checked the config files, which look ok. I then tried re-installing the package, but this didn't resolve the issues. I'm not sure at this point if the problem is due to software configuration, or a hardware problem. I've also tried the cable in other router ports, but same problem. These URLs are comming mostly from non existent sites or are being generated directly by our website. • Dnsmasq offering IP via DHCP, but nobody is accepting

  As clients connect the logs light up with DHCPDISCOVER(wlan0) and DHCPOFFER(wlan0) but the IPs being offered are not being accepted. Currently dnsmasq offers IPs on eth1 which works flawlessly. • What tools can be used to monitor a web application? Beyond "doesn't 404"

  I have an internal web application that has recently gone through a major version upgrade. I would like to monitor this application over the weekend and look for 'soft' errors. I will still need to spot check things by hand, but there are some common failure patterns that I think I can automate. Examples include data with bad formatting, blank rows in tables (indicates missing non-critical data), patterns for identifiers ("TEST" means one of my devs left a testing feed on), etc. I think there are applications out there that can be scripted to do things like: 1. log in 2. Go to $URL 3. select 3rd link in $LIST or $PATTERN 4. Check HTML from that link for $PATTERNS 5. Email report Are these goals sane? What applications/tools can help with this?

• Links opened by left-click in IE8 take forever compared to middle-mouse button

  When I use the middle mouse button to open a link in a new tab, it works instantly. However, if I left-click the link to open it normally, IE8 freezes for about 5 seconds before the popup window opens. I'm sick of all the slowness and the glitchiness and the memory hogging, and I just want it to work as well as all the other browsers out there. Anybody else experiencing this and have any tips? Note: It's not the Java SSV helper or the Skype addon (because I have those disabled). I'm looking for some advanced solutions that I can try. (God, I hate IE8, but I'm a loyal Microsoft follower so I refuse to switch to Firefox. )

• How do I convince my boss that it's OK to use an application to access an outside website?

  That is, if you agree that it's OK. We have a need to maintain an accurate internal record of bank routing numbers, and my boss wants me to set up a process where once a week someone goes to the Federal Reserve's website, clicks on the link to get the list of routing numbers (or the link giving the updates since a particular date), and then manually uploads the resultant text file to an application that will make the update to our data. I told him that a manual process was not at all necessary, and that I could write a routine that would access the FED's routing numbers in the application that keeps our data updated, and put it on whatever schedule was appropriate. But he is greatly opposed to doing this, and calls it "hacking the Federal Reserve website." I think he's afraid that the FED is going to get after us. I showed him the FED's robot.txt file, and the only thing it forbids is an automated indexing of pages with extension .cf*: User-agent: * # applies to all robots Disallow: CF # disallow indexing of all CF* directories and pages This says nothing about accessing the same data automatically that you could access manually. Anyone have a good counterargument to the idea that we'd be "hacking" the FED?

• iCal4j ics file not importing to Outlook 2010

  I'm having trouble importing an ics file via the 'internet calendars' option in Outlook. The file is produced, I believe, by a Java applet. When I open the ics file directly within Outlook 2010 it works fine, i.e. click on the link and open the downloaded file with Outlook. I've also validated it online with the validator mentioned in some Stack Overflow posts. However when I subscribe to the link via internet calendars I get the following error: The file "calendar" is not a valid Internet Calendar file I haven't been able to work out what's going wrong here and the error message isn't particularly helpful. Does anyone have any ideas why this isn't working?

• Google analytics - drop in traffic

  Bit of a general question here. We are in the process of converting a number of our clients from older web sites to new ones. The problem we are getting, and sorry for being so general here, is we are getting a sharp decline in traffic as reported on Google Analytics. It's not a gradual decline, it seems to hit almost as soon as the new site goes live. I've just got a few questions to see if there is something we are doing wrong: a) We are using the same analytics accounts going from old to new site. Is this a bad idea? b) The actual analytics code is integrated into the pages using a server-side include. IS this a bad idea? c) We structure our sites differently to our old site. IE. The old sites would pretty must have all the web pages in the root directory, and hyperlinks would be linked to the page files: EG. <a href="somepage.aspx">Link</a> Our new sites now have a directory structure that pretty much reflects the navigation structure, and hyper links link to the pages directory instead of the actual page: EG. <a href="/new-items/shoes/">New shoes</a> Is this a bad idea. I'm really searching for a needle in a haystack here. Would appriciate any help or advice as to why we are getting such a sharp and sudden drop in traffic. Again, so this is such a general question. • Dual-WAN router

  I am looking for a router that would fit the following requirements: Two WAN interfaces: the primary is PPPoE, the secondary will link to a GigE port on another router (a 100Mbps link will suffice); Two (ideally four) GigE LAN ports; No requirement for a firewall; No requirement for Wi-Fi; Inexpensive. The plan for the two WAN interfaces is as follows. All outbound traffic will go to the primary, with exceptions based on destination IP/subnet or possibly on src+dest IPs/subnets. Such exceptions should be routed to the secondary. It would be very nice if, should the primary go down, the secondary would automatically take over for all outbound traffic. I am reasonably sure that I can put something together based on dd-wrt. However, I'd like to hear from you what alternatives are out there (especially something easier to set up for my use case, even if it means paying more for the hardware.)

• Run a command from Windows 7 Start Menu

  I'm trying to run commands such as "cmd.exe", "appwiz.cpl" etc by typing it in the Search box of the Start Menu in Windows 7 (x86). I'm able to do this just fine in Vista. After typing in "cmd" I notice that I see a link to "Programs" in the start menu so it seems that "cmd" is being recognized but when I click on "Programs" link which is shown,I get the following message. "These files can't be opened. Your internet security settings prevented one or more files from being opened" P.S. - I'm not looking for enabling the "Run" command to show in the Start Menu Any help would be much appreciated

  I wonder what is the best way to have Javascript loaded content indexed by search engines. I know that search engines don't execute Javascript, but I am thinking more of an progressive enchantment. I am creating a responsive website, and on the home page I will have some sections about most visited products and recommended product that I plan to load depending on the device detected. These products will be in sliders with thumbnail images and names of the products. If mobile is detected slider content will not load, ant the link to the external page will be shown. I know that external content will be indexed via link to those resources. Where will the users be directed from search in this case? To the external page or home page? Will it be bad for SEO if I show only product names on front page so they can be indexed and hide them with CSS? What is the best way to index that content and possibly direct users from search to home page? Also, i've seen the Ajax crawling but iI would like not to use that if there is any better way.

  Whilst creating a site mirror using wget 1.12 on Ubuntu links with a rel attribute set are not downloaded: <a href="link" rel="tag">text</a> Rel="tag" is a microformat (By adding rel="tag" to a hyperlink, a page indicates that the destination of that hyperlink is an author-designated "tag" (or keyword/subject) for the current page). My WordPress theme uses this for link to tags, so 99% of the site is ignored. Edit: it turns out all my permalinks use rel="bookmark" and are skipped as well.   This question already has an answer here: How to diagnose a search engine ranking drop? 5 answers Firstly, we are a small entrepreneurial team of 3 persons and I am more like an amateur webmaster of the company's website as we cannot really afford a technical guy/department right now. A few weeks earlier, our website traffic and rankings for most keywords decreased overnight. I did a lot of reading henceforth and learned about Penguin 2.1 which people said is the reason for the drop. Something like this had never happened before. Now, I have gone through the entire Google webmaster help section. It says there that if a manual penalty is taken against us, we would notice a message in Manual Actions page. So far, we haven't received any notice from Google for web spam. Some SEO guys I contacted said they found spam links in our backlink profile. I do believe I had mistakenly purchased a cheap link/SEO scheme when I was yet very new to SEO. This was more than a year back but since then we have been legitimate. Moreover, how do I find out which is a spam link and which is not? Our content is all original, refreshing and the best you will find in our niche. We also have a blog but on a different domain (wordpress.com) from where we send out anchored links to our business website. Is this a good thing to do? Now, how should we proceed and recover our traffic/rankings. I tried searching in webmasters for a way to reach google and ask them why the traffic has decreased suddenly, but I couldn't find a contact form or something. Can someone please go through our website and help in making things more clear regarding the reason for the drop, along with a solution. Will really appreciate this as I can't get to figure this out and its taking a lot of time. Vaivhav

• Botting from a stick drive

  Am trying to boot from a usb stick. Have carefully followed the instructions at the following link and successfully downloaded and installed version Ubuntu 12.04 desk top: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/help/create-a-usb-stick-on-windows I used the Universal-USB-Installer-1.9.0.2 as instructed and choose the "Ubuntu 12.04 desk top" option, after downloading the respective iso/zip file onto my Dell laptop from the Ubuntu site. Also modified my bios to select the usb first as boot drive instead of hard drive. Also, turned off bit blocker on my laptop and usb stick. Usb stick has the setting of "Automatically unlock this drive on this computer". When i reboot my laptop, it first boots into a black screen (i assume is the bios), but prompts saying "Remove disks or other media. Press any key to start". I press any key and regardless the laptop boots up to windows. Hence, it appears that the boot process is checking the USB first before going to the hard drive to look for it's boot disk and starting Windows 7. Is it that the USB stick is not correctly configured with Ubuntu as a boot disk? Is there anything else that i need to do besides the instructions at the following link? http://www.ubuntu.com/download/help/create-a-usb-stick-on-windows How can I ensure that USB boot stick is configured correctly? After running the Universal-USB-Installer-1.9.0.2 to "install" Ubuntu, is there additional configuration/installation steps? What is the first file that the bios would look for on this USB drive? Is this configured somewhere in the bios, or would it just look for an grub file or /boot dir? The only message i get when booting is "Remove disks or other media. Press any key to start". Any and all help would be much appreciated.. Thanks ... :)
