• Hosting and domain registrations for multiple clients

  I am finally getting regular work desiging, developing, and deploying websites for small businesses and individuals. So far the websites utilize single-user content management systems, so the websites create, as far as I know, minimal load on the shared servers. I have always required that each of my clients purchase annual shared hosting at Dreamhost. For domain registration, I ask that they register with Dreamhost, but some already have a registered domain elsewhere and this is fine with me. I do this so the billing issues are the client's responsibility, not mine. My question is: Since I can register unlimited domains and connect them to my one shared hosting account at Dreamhost, should I not be requiring clients to individually pay for shared hosting and a domain? Should I actually be paying for one hosting account and then hosting all of my client's websites on that account? As I said before, I currently have each client buy their own hosting, because I feel that, for example, if there is high traffic to their site, there would be less a chance of the site going down than if their site was hosted with many others on one account. I am famous for being long-winded, please let me know if I can clarify at all. Thanks!

• Two views of Federation: inside out, and outside in

  IDM customers that I speak to have spent a lot of time thinking about enterprise SSO - asking your employees to log in to multiple systems, each with distinct hard to guess (translation: hard to remember) passwords that fit the corporate security policy for length and complexity is a strategy that is just begging for a lot of help-desk password reset calls. So forward thinking organizations have implemented SSO for as many systems as possible. With the mix of Enterprise Apps moving to the cloud, it makes sense to continue this SSO strategy by Federating with those cloud apps and services.  Organizations maintain control, since employee access to the externally hosted apps is provided via the enterprise account.  If the employee leaves, their access to the cloud app is terminated when their enterprise account is disabled.  The employees don't have to remember another username and password - so life is good. From the outside in - I am excited about the increasing use of Social Sign-on - or BYOI (Bring your own Identity).  The convenience of single-sign on is extended to customers/users/prospects when organizations enable access to business services using a social ID.  The last thing I want when visiting a website or blog is to create another account.  So using my Google or Twitter ID is a very nice quick way to get access without having to go through a registration process that creates another username/password that I have to try to remember. The convenience of not having to maintain multiple passwords is obvious, whether you are an employee or customer - and the security benefit of not having lots of passwords to lose or forget is there as well. Are enterprises allowing employees to use their personal (social) IDs for enterprise apps?  Not yet, but we are moving in the right direction, and we will get there some day.

  Fault Handling It is one thing to architect, design, and code the “happy flow” of your automated business processes and services. It is another thing to deal with situations you do not want or expect to occur in your processes and services. This session dives into fault handling in Oracle Service Bus 11g and Oracle SOA Suite 11g, based on an order-to-cash business process. Faults can be divided into business faults, technical faults, programming errors, and faulty user input. Each type of fault needs a different approach to prevent them from occurring or to deal with them. For example, apply User Experience (UX) techniques to improve the quality of your application so that faulty user input can be prevented as much as possible. This session shows and demos what patterns and techniques can be used in Oracle Service Bus and Oracle SOA Suite to prevent and handle technical faults as well as business faults. Q&A This section lists answers to the questions that were raised during the preview event. Q: Where can retries be configured in Oracle Service Bus? The retry mechanism is used to prevent faults caused by temporary glitches such as short network interruptions. A faulted message is resend (retried) and might succeed this time since the glitch has passed. Retries are an out-of-the-box feature that can be used in Oracle Service Bus and Oracle SOA Suite using the Fault Policy framework. By default, retries are disabled in Oracle Service Bus. • C++ Succinctly now available!

  Over the summer I worked with SyncFusion to create an eBook based off of my C# to C++ guide for their free Succinctly Series of eBooks. Today the result, C++ Succinctly, was published for download. It is a free (registration required; they make tools and libraries for .NET development so you might get an occasional email from them – I’ve been signed up for a few months and have had maybe 3 emails total so it’s not horrible super spam or anything ) and you can download it as a PDF or a Kindle .MOBI file (or both). I’m excited with how it turned out and enjoyed working with the people at SyncFusion. The book contains a total of 20 code samples, which you can download from BitBucket (there’s a link very early in the book). Almost all of the code is also inline in the book itself so that you don’t need to worry about flipping back and forth between your dev machine and your eReader (but if you want to try to understand a concept better, you can easily download the code, open it up in VS 2012, and play around with it to see what happens when you tinker with things). The code does require Visual Studio 2012 because of its expanded support for C++11 features and since I wrote all of the samples as Console programs for clarity and compactness, you will need a version that supports C++ desktop development (currently VS 2012 Pro, Premium, or Ultimate). Sometime this Fall, Microsoft will be releasing Visual Studio 2012 Express for Windows Desktop which should provide a free way to use the samples. That said, I tested all of the samples with MinGW and only the StorageDurationSample will not compile with it due to the thread-local storage code. If you comment that out then you can compile and run all the samples with MinGW (or using a recent version of GCC in a GNU/Linux environment, or any other C++ compiler that provides the same level of C++11 support that Visual Studio 2012 does). I hope it proves helpful to those of you who choose to check it out!

  Possible Duplicate: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? I'm researching a web host for a client and am looking for any recommendations of hosts you may have used and been happy with. Here are the requirements I've been given: The hosting service needs to either provide or allow us to add the following functionality: i. ASP/ASP.Net ii. video streaming iii. audio streaming iv. reporting v. RSS feeds vi. site search vii. forums viii. podcasts ix. Flash x. CMS: looking at using Percussion Software xi. PII registration xii. tie into SF.com (Sales Force) They also want to have a pre-prod server available so they can test the website before going public with it. • Is There a Cloud Over OpenWorld?

  If you have been to OpenWorld in the past, you know it can be overwhelming or at least a bit "large." If this is your first time at OpenWorld, get ready! You are in for a big (or I should say HUGE) treat. The first thing you'll notice when you get to San Francisco is there are a lot of people, buses with "Oracle" posters, large exhibit halls filled with demos, games and tchotchkes from vendors with hot new solutions, and then there are the sessions. Yes, in fact there are over 2000 sessions. How can you possibly sort through 2000 sessions to find the best 20 or so for you? Which are the 1% for you? We will try to help with some insight over the next few weeks.  I'm going start at the highest level. Up in the Clouds! Since I know many people are looking for an update on The Oracle Cloud. • Access Control Service: Walkthrough Videos of Web Application, SOAP, REST and Silverlight Integration

  Over the weekend I worked a little more on my ACS2 sample. Instead of writing it all down, I decided to quickly record four short videos that cover the relevant features and code. Have fun ;) Part 1 – Overview This video does a quick walkthrough of the solution and shows the web application part. This includes driving the sign in UI via JavaScript (thanks Matias) as well as the registration logic I wrote about here. watch Part 2 – SOAP Service and Client The sample app also exposes a WCF SOAP service. This video shows how to wire up the service to ACS and hows how to create a client that first requests a token from an IdP and then sends this token to ACS. watch Part 3 – REST Service and Client This part shows how to set up a WCF REST service that consumes SWT tokens from ACS. Unfortunately there is currently no standard WIF plumbing for REST. For the service integration I had to combine a lot of code from different sources (kzu, zulfiq) as well as the WIF SDK and OAuth CTPs together. The Silverlight Client shows ho to sign in to the application using a registered identity provider (including web identities) and using the resulting SWT token to call our REST service. • Should I go with Java or Python for my next project, after using PHP for 5 years? [closed]

  I have a full-time PHP job and I've been working with PHP for 5 years. I'm not willing to stay within this technology stack any more. I also worked with Java for 2 year before, so for me it looks more obvious to switch back to Java. However during last 5 years I was thinking about starting my own project, and now I think I have a very good SAAS idea. I'm completely confused what technology should I use for my project. I don't want to do it in PHP, and after reading many articles about rapid prototype development it seems to me that Django is the best option. I will continue to work full time for my current employer because I need to pay my bills and will work on my project in my free time. The concern I have is should I do my project in Java or Python? To be realistic there is always a risk when you are doing your own project/start-up. If I do it in Java in the worst case scenario I believe I will be able to find a full time Java position because I already have some experience in Java + recent experience in my project. With regards to Python it looks like it is not very popular in my area and salaries are much more lower then for Java. On the other hand I have a feeling that if I chose Java it will take me a way longer to finish my project. Guys I'm completely confused and I need your advice. P.S. I have moved to London 2 years ago from another country, local guys are very welcome to share their thoughts about London's job market.

• Installing datacommons from sunlight

  I know strictly nothing from python and I am installing datacommons from the sunlightlabs. So I followed step by step the README.md https://github.com/sunlightlabs/datacommons First, it is said in the doc to add to the virtualenv dc_data, dc_matcchbox but I didn't find them. But I went to the final step to run ./manage.py runserver so I had the following message : (datacommons)newben@newben-VirtualBox:~/share-ubuntu/sunlightlabs-datacommons-e3ff1a3$ ./manage.py runserver fatal: Not a git repository (or any parent up to mount parent /home/mbenchoufi) Stopping at filesystem boundary (GIT_DISCOVERY_ACROSS_FILESYSTEM not set). Error: Can't find the file 'settings.py' in the directory containing './manage.py'. It appears you've customized things. You'll have to run django-admin.py, passing it your settings module. (If the file settings.py does indeed exist, it's causing an ImportError somehow.) In the 'sunlightlabs-datacommons-e3ff1a3' folder, I downloaded and put the files from github. By the way I didin't understand how to deal with the settings file. Could someone help me understand how to install datacommons ?

• It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over

  Oracle OpenWorld 2012 is behind us. Well, for San Francisco, anyhow. The team is already working on the Latin America event which takes place in December in Sao Paulo, and an OpenWorld in Asia for 2013 as well. And of course they're already working on the next San Francisco OpenWorld for 2013. So what happens after the conference is over? People pack up demo and network gear and ship it out to wherever it's going next; take down and recycle signage; strike the keynote set, the exhibition and demo halls, the street tents, and anything else that was constructed just for the conference. There's a lot of post-conference analyis going on too. Oracle and partner marketing teams are looking at and following up on the leads they got from booth, demo, and lounge traffic. The events team is evaluating the session and conference surveys you filled out if you attended -- looking to identify the best speakers, what worked and didn't work, how you liked the venues, the food, the entertainment, the presentations. From all of that information will come recommendations for next year on what to keep doing, what to do better, and what not to do at all. The goal for each year's conference is to be better than last year's. • Should I use heroku or should I have my own ssl? [closed]

  Base on your experience, can you please advice what will be better for me? Issue : I build applications and there are 2 major constraints. 1. ssl is needed since I used facebook api's. So, only heroku is a good option. 2. My web components tend to hit the Max_Execution_Time very often, since I pull a lot of data using the facebook api. Future possible purpose of this site : 1. Will use more apis from google, twitter, future. 2. Might request for donations. 3. Just for hobby. I have two options : 1. Create a web site in heroku itself by converting all the php components to a background worker in python using django. 2. Dont use heroku at all. Do the the complete hosting with godaddy (shared plan). And buy an ssl so that I can use fb apis etc. In this scenario, what do you suggest me to do?

• OOP Structure for web application

  Ok so I have a website in which users complete tasks to earn points. When they earn enough points, they rise in rank. The site from my understanding is very basic and only executes one query or two queries at most a page. There is a user table, a support ticket table, and an orders table. All of these contain a relational row for username. Our class was familiarized with OOP back in highschool with Java but that was for video games and I could grasp the concept on why you would need a class player and class enemy. However I don't understand it's web application. At least not in my situation. I understand the user class might contain stuff like: getUsername getPoints getEmail setEmail addPoints (does this belong here? OR only things the user can manipulate should be here?) etc.. But I'm at a loss with everything else such as user registration. Can you help give me a wire framework that I could wrap my head around? Pointing me to a good eBook would help greatly

To keep things running as seamlessly and smoothly as possible, constantly evaluate priorities, mitigate risk, and be ready for whatever might happen -- because things do happen when there are 50,000 plus attendees, tens of thousands of devices, unexpected requirements, and a constant flow of up-to-the-minute information. Here's just some of what it takes to keep the conference going, network style: 100 Oracle network, voice, and desktop engineers; security, risk management, and other IT experts, who come in from 17 countries  1000+ network switches 300+ miles of copper and fiber 485 wireless access points 2,500 wired laptops 300 VoIP phones And just where are all these networks and devices deployed? This is what the team had to build and manage: Moscone North, South, and West, including: The keynote hall Oracle DEMOgrounds in the Exhibition Halls Hundreds of session rooms Connection Centers, Social Avenue, Lounges Registration The Howard Street Tent and Taylor Street Cafe tented venues Oracle Square (Union Square) Yerba Buena Gardens Masonic Auditorium Sessions and demos at 8 hotel venues That's a whole lot of networking going on. And here's the kicker: the team has only 4 days to bring get it all up and running across these many venues, and exactly 12 hours to take it all down once the show ends. The Global IT team puts in the equivalent of 152 24-hour days for set-up, 227 24-hour days of support during the conferences, and then tears it all down in about 20 24-hour days. And in case you were wondering, the planning for next year's Oracle OpenWorld starts ... next week. No rest for the weary.  Now THAT's networking!  So hats off to the Global IT team -- the job ain't easy, but somebody's got to do it, and they do it remarkably well.
