  • How can I use my own, external IP instead of localhost with Glassfish?

    I am using Glassfish v3 to develop couple of servlets. For testing the servlets the localhost:8080/MyServlet is working fine. But whenever I am using IP instead of localhost, its returning an error, saying: Oops! Google Chrome could not connect to xxx.xx.xx.xxx:8080. The address in the Glassfish is already set to 0.0.0.0. I even tried changing the 0.0.0.0 to my IP but the Glassfish is not starting saying the port is not empty. It was not a problem with XAMMP while I used it for PHP development. I am using Windows 7.

  • How do I preserve ownership permissions when copying to an external volume?

    When I upgrade or reinstall linux I backup my home folder by running sudo cp -pr /home/users/yitzchak /media/externalHDD/backups. When I do this I get errors saying that permissions could not be preserved and when I copy the folder back onto my local disk I see that ownership has been changed to root and I have to chown all of them back, which has to be done manually piecemeal because not all files have the same group. Is there any way around that?

  • Why is my library/Documents shortcut showing all files from all subfolders in one flat list?

    I am using Windows Explorer on Windows 7. In My Documents there's a folder 02 KOOP. If I go there using the adress bar: D:\users\username\My Documents\02 KOOP I get a view of my subfolders and some files: However when I use the Documents shortcut under Libraries, and then go to the 02 KOOP folder, all files that are located in all subfolders are listed in one big list. When you view the file properties, the actual location is shown: This is the only subfolder of My Documents that has this behaviour. Did I accidentally change some setting, or is something wrong? Is this some setting I accidentally changed?

    I have two 1TB Seagate USB (sdc1 and sdd1) drives connected to an old PC running Fedora 11 without an X server running. Since sdc1 and sdd1 change depending on the order in which they are plugged in, I decided to mount them using their UUID instead. These are my fstab entries UUID=d1b28578-451b-4f03-af28-2e8a6d5b7efb /media/Seagate ext3 defaults,rw,auto,users UUID=36bf5df4-934e-42d4-9e25-16a13971509c /media/Projects ext3 defaults,rw,auto,users They work fine, but when I unmount them and unplug the USB drives, they still show up in Nautilus (I'm running nautilus with X11 forwarding to an Ubuntu machine, btw). Now if I remove those entries from fstab, the drives disappear from Computer. If I add the entries back, they show up as an unmounted drive even when the drive is not plugged in. How do I do this so they don't show up when they're not plugged in?

    I have a non-apache web server running on port 8000, but this cannot be accessed from behind corporate firewalls. So, I would like to use my apache 2 server as a proxy to this other web server. I've tried using: RewriteEngine On RewriteRule /.* http://buildbot.synergy-foss.org:8000/builders/ [PT] ... but this does not work; I get: Bad Request Your browser sent a request that this server could not understand. However, it worked fine with [R]. Update: Also, when using ProxyPass, I get this error: Forbidden You don't have permission to access / on this server.

  • Is there a postfix mysql virtual_maps append_at_origin workaround so I can pipe to external scripts?

    I am using virtual domains, and I'd like to setup the server to alias to custom scripts. I manage all accounts using postfix mappings to mysql. It seems that postfix automatically appends a virtual domain regardless of how the forwarded/aliased result comes back. So even though i have: "|/bin/command" postfix is reading it as: "|/bin/command"@mydomain.com Is there any work-around, or setting I can fix? It would seem than append_at_myorigin=no would be ideal, but that's unsupported according to the documentation. Another option, maybe I can skip virtual aliases altogether and use the "/etc/postfix/aliases" table - assuming all emails go to the main domain. I'll try this, but if anyone has any other ideas how to make it work with virtual domains, please let me know as this would be very useful! Thanks.

  • Can one use Airport (Time Capsule) with an external DHCP server?

    I currently share my DSL connection using a wireless router with DHCP disabled, and dnsmasq running on a Mac Mini serving DHCP & DNS. This setup is important because I have clients doing PXE boot, and I need the control over DHCP that dnsmasq provides. There is also a Time Capsule on the network that's used purely as a backup device; its wireless functions are disabled. The wireless router is starting to get a little flaky, and since it doesn't support 802.11n I'd like to replace it. Rather than buying a new router, I'd like to just use the Time Capsule. But I see no way to disable its DHCP server; when I set the connection type to PPPoE, it insists on serving DHCP. Is there any way to use Airport PPPoE with a DHCP server elsewhere on the network?

    In an upcoming project I have a two server setup: one is the application server and another, already existing runs the mysql server with databases I need to access. I contacted the server admin of the mysql server and the only way I can access the remote mysql databases is via "SSH tunnel". I have never done this before and never heard of it so far, so my question, are there any drawbacks, e. g. performance wise? Isnt it rather slow compared to directly accessing the mysql server on its default port?

What I did was, I took out the hard drive, put it in an enclosure and plugged it in to my other laptop that runs linux. The problem is, I cannot copy files from the hard drive due to file permissions. I tried to access the hard drive as root. But I still cannot copy files. How do I remove file permissions from the harddrive?

  • BIND: How do I allow DNS query from specific external host?

    I'm running Centos 5.8 (bind 9.3.6). Here is my issue... I run my own DNS server to serve the local machine. I would like to use my DNS server from home. Since my home is a dynamic IP address, I am not sure how this would be accomplished. In my named.conf, there is an allow-query{} and allow-recursion{}. It seems both of those take an IP address, but i need to specify a hostname (at least a cname). This is not a public DNS server (so any is not an option). My hostname/cname is already updated automatically using nsupdate. The only solution I can think of, which I do not like, is to change my nsupdate script to somehow modify the named.conf to search/replace the allow-query/recursion IP address. That would require restarting named whenever the hostname changes as well as Is there some other way to handle this?

  • Is it possible to redirect/bounce TCP traffic to an external destination, based on rules?

    I'm not even sure if this is possible... Also, please forgive my ignorance on the subject. What I'm looking for is for "something" that would allow me to redirect all TCP traffic arriving to host A to host B, but based on some rules. Say host A (the intermediary) receives a request (say a simple HTTP request) from a host with domain X. In that case, it lets it pass through and it's handled by host A itself. Now, let's suppose that host A receives another HTTP request from a host with domain Y, but this time, due to some customizable rules, host A redirects all the traffic to host B, and host B is able to handle it as if came directly from domain Y. And, at this point, both host B and the host with domain Y are able to freely communicate (of course, thought host A). NOTE: All these hosts are on the Internet, not inside a LAN. Please, let me know if the explanation is not clear enough.

  • What are my options for a secure External File Share in Server 2008 R2?

    Hi, I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 machine installed on a home network with a number of files that need to be shared in a few different scenarios. I would like for all three scenarios to have a solution with some sort of encyption to protect the data during transfer. Scenario 1: I need to access files from my laptop (Mac OSX) or another computer outside of the network. This option seems like the easy one to answer in that I could use LogMeIn, the windows VPN, etc. to create such a connection. Scenario 2: I need to provide access to another user with minimal installation / configuration on his or her end. This makes me think of the new FTP 7.5 provided with Server 2008 R2 but i'm not sure of the details: Does it support SSH or some other form of encryption?, can an OSX user connect?, etc. My question here is what are my options? I really just don't know where to get started...

  • .NET HTML Sanitation for rich HTML Input

    Recently I was working on updating a legacy application to MVC 4 that included free form text input. When I set up the new site my initial approach was to not allow any rich HTML input, only simple text formatting that would respect a few simple HTML commands for bold, lists etc. and automatically handles line break processing for new lines and paragraphs. This is typical for what I do with most multi-line text input in my apps and it works very well with very little development effort involved. Then the client sprung another note: Oh by the way we have a bunch of customers (real estate agents) who need to post complete HTML documents. Oh uh! There goes the simple theory. After some discussion and pleading on my part (<snicker>) to try and avoid this type of raw HTML input because of potential XSS issues, the client decided to go ahead and allow raw HTML input anyway. There has been lots of discussions on this subject on StackOverFlow (and here and here) but to after reading through some of the solutions I didn't really find anything that would work even closely for what I needed. Specifically we need to be able to allow just about any HTML markup, with the exception of script code. Remote CSS and Images need to be loaded, links need to work and so. While the 'legit' HTML posted by these agents is basic in nature it does span most of the full gamut of HTML (4). Most of the solutions XSS prevention/sanitizer solutions I found were way to aggressive and rendered the posted output unusable mostly because they tend to strip any externally loaded content. In short I needed a custom solution. I thought the best solution to this would be to use an HTML parser - in this case the Html Agility Pack - and then to run through all the HTML markup provided and remove any of the blacklisted tags and a number of attributes that are prone to JavaScript injection. There's much discussion on whether to use blacklists vs. whitelists in the discussions mentioned above, but I found that whitelists can make sense in simple scenarios where you might allow manual HTML input, but when you need to allow a larger array of HTML functionality a blacklist is probably easier to manage as the vast majority of elements and attributes could be allowed. Also white listing gets a bit more complex with HTML5 and the new proliferation of new HTML tags and most new tags generally don't affect XSS issues directly. Pure whitelisting based on elements and attributes also doesn't capture many edge cases (see some of the XSS cheat sheets listed below) so even with a white list, custom logic is still required to handle many of those edge cases. The Microsoft Web Protection Library (AntiXSS) My first thought was to check out the Microsoft AntiXSS library. Microsoft has an HTML Encoding and Sanitation library in the Microsoft Web Protection Library (formerly AntiXSS Library) on CodePlex, which provides stricter functions for whitelist encoding and sanitation. Initially I thought the Sanitation class and its static members would do the trick for me,but I found that this library is way too restrictive for my needs. Specifically the Sanitation class strips out images and links which rendered the full HTML from our real estate clients completely useless. I didn't spend much time with it, but apparently I'm not alone if feeling this library is not really useful without some way to configure operation. To give you an example of what didn't work for me with the library here's a small and simple HTML fragment that includes script, img and anchor tags. I would expect the script to be stripped and everything else to be left intact. Here's the original HTML:var value = "<b>Here</b> <script>alert('hello')</script> we go. Visit the " + "<a href='http://west-wind.com'>West Wind</a> site. " + "<img src='http://west-wind.com/images/new.gif' /> " ; and the code to sanitize it with the AntiXSS Sanitize class:@Html.Raw(Microsoft.Security.Application.Sanitizer.GetSafeHtmlFragment(value)) This produced a not so useful sanitized string: Here we go. Visit the <a>West Wind</a> site. While it removed the <script> tag (good) it also removed the href from the link and the image tag altogether (bad). In some situations this might be useful, but for most tasks I doubt this is the desired behavior. While links can contain javascript: references and images can 'broadcast' information to a server, without configuration to tell the library what to restrict this becomes useless to me. I couldn't find any way to customize the white list, nor is there code available in this 'open source' library on CodePlex. Using Html Agility Pack for HTML Parsing The WPL library wasn't going to cut it. After doing a bit of research I decided the best approach for a custom solution would be to use an HTML parser and inspect the HTML fragment/document I'm trying to import. I've used the HTML Agility Pack before for a number of apps where I needed an HTML parser without requiring an instance of a full browser like the Internet Explorer Application object which is inadequate in Web apps. In case you haven't checked out the Html Agility Pack before, it's a powerful HTML parser library that you can use from your .NET code. It provides a simple, parsable HTML DOM model to full HTML documents or HTML fragments that let you walk through each of the elements in your document. If you've used the HTML or XML DOM in a browser before you'll feel right at home with the Agility Pack. Blacklist based HTML Parsing to strip XSS Code For my purposes of HTML sanitation, the process involved is to walk the HTML document one element at a time and then check each element and attribute against a blacklist. There's quite a bit of argument of what's better: A whitelist of allowed items or a blacklist of denied items. While whitelists tend to be more secure, they also require a lot more configuration. In the case of HTML5 a whitelist could be very extensive. For what I need, I only want to ensure that no JavaScript is executed, so a blacklist includes the obvious <script> tag plus any tag that allows loading of external content including <iframe>, <object>, <embed> and <link> etc. <form>  is also excluded to avoid posting content to a different location. I also disallow <head> and <meta> tags in particular for my case, since I'm only allowing posting of HTML fragments. There is also some internal logic to exclude some attributes or attributes that include references to JavaScript or CSS expressions. The default tag blacklist reflects my use case, but is customizable and can be added to. If your needs are less lenient than mine were you can you can make this much stricter by not allowing src and href attributes or CSS links if your HTML doesn't allow it. You can also check links for external URLs and disallow those - lots of options.  The code is simple enough to make it easy to extend to fit your use cases more specifically. It's also quite easy to make this code work using a WhiteList approach if you want to go that route. The code above is semi-generic for allowing full featured HTML fragments that only disallow script related content. The Sanitize method walks through each node of the document and then recursively drills into all of its children until the entire document has been traversed. Note that the code here uses an XmlTextWriter to write output - this is done to preserve XHTML style self-closing tags which are otherwise left as non-self-closing tags. The sanitizer code scans for blacklist elements and removes those elements not allowed. Note that the blacklist is configurable either in the instance class as a property or in the static method via the string parameter list. Additionally the code goes through each element's attributes and looks for a host of rules gleaned from some of the XSS cheat sheets listed at the end of the post. Clearly there are a lot more XSS vulnerabilities, but a lot of them apply to ancient browsers (IE6 and versions of Netscape) - many of these glaring holes (like CSS expressions - WTF IE?) have been removed in modern browsers. What a Pain To be honest this is NOT a piece of code that I wanted to write. I think building anything related to XSS is better left to people who have far more knowledge of the topic than I do. Unfortunately, I was unable to find a tool that worked even closely for me, or even provided a working base. For the project I was working on I had no choice and I'm sharing the code here merely as a base line to start with and potentially expand on for specific needs. It's sad that Microsoft Web Protection Library is currently such a train wreck - this is really something that should come from Microsoft as the systems vendor or possibly a third party that provides security tools. Luckily for my application we are dealing with a authenticated and validated users so the user base is fairly well known, and relatively small - this is not a wide open Internet application that's directly public facing. As I mentioned earlier in the post, if I had my way I would simply not allow this type of raw HTML input in the first place, and instead rely on a more controlled HTML input mechanism like MarkDown or even a good HTML Edit control that can provide some limits on what types of input are allowed. Alas in this case I was overridden and we had to go forward and allow *any* raw HTML posted. Sometimes I really feel sad that it's come this far - how many good applications and tools have been thwarted by fear of XSS (or worse) attacks? So many things that could be done *if* we had a more secure browser experience and didn't have to deal with every little script twerp trying to hack into Web pages and obscure browser bugs.   • Trying to 'Make' CUDA SDK, ld cannot find library, ldconfig says it can.

    I know there are many other questions similar to this one, but none of the solutions posited there are working for me Basically, making the SDK sample files, i get /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lcuda which would be an easy enough 'find the library and throw it to ldconfig', except ldconfig already says it has it... $ sudo ldconfig -v | grep cuda /usr/local/cuda/lib64: libcudartemu.so.3 -> libcudartemu.so.3.0.14 libcudart.so.3 -> libcudart.so.3.0.14 /usr/local/cuda/lib: libcudartemu.so.3 -> libcudartemu.so.3.0.14 libcudart.so.3 -> libcudart.so.3.0.14 libcuda.so.1 -> libcuda.so.195.36.15 libcuda.so.1 -> libcuda.so.195.36.15 libicudata.so.42 -> libicudata.so.42.1 And I checked, there is a symlink libcuda.so -> libcuda.so.1 but I'm still confused as to why libcuda.so -> ... doesnt show up I must be missing something really obvious.   • How to reliably replace a library-defined error handler with my own?

    On certain error cases ATL invokes AtlThrow() which is implemented as ATL::AtlThrowImpl() which in turn throws CAtlException. The latter is not very good - CAtlException is not even derived from std::exception and also we use our own exceptions hierarchy and now we will have to catch CAtlException separately here and there which is lots of extra code and error-prone. Looks like it is possible to replace ATL::AtlThrowImpl() with my own handler - define _ATL_CUSTOM_THROW and define AtlThrow() to be the custom handler before including atlbase.h - and ATL will call the custom handler. Not so easy. Some of ATL code is not in sources - it comes compiled as a library - either static or dynamic. We use the static - atls.lib. And... it is compiled in such way that it has ATL::ThrowImpl() inside and some code calling it. I used a static analysis tool - it clearly shows that there're paths on which the old default handler is called. To ensure I even tried to "reimplement" ATL::AtlThrowImpl() in my code. Now the linker says it sees two declarations of ATL::AtlThrowImpl() which I suppose confirms that there's another implementation that can be called by some code. How can I handle this? How do I replace the default handler completely and ensure that the default handler is never called?

  • Java library class to handle scheduled execution of "callbacks"?

    My program has a component - dubbed the Scheduler - that lets other components register points in time at which they want to be called back. This should work much like the Unix cron service, i. e. you tell the Scheduler "notify me at ten minutes past every full hour". I realize there are no real callbacks in Java. Here's my approach, is there a library which already does this stuff? Feel free to suggest improvements, too. Register call to Scheduler passes: a time specification containing hour, minute, second, year month, dom, dow, where each item may be unspecified, meaning "execute it every hour / minute etc." (just like crontabs) an object containing data that will tell the calling object what to do when it is notified by the Scheduler. The Scheduler does not process this data, just stores it and passes it back upon notification. a reference to the calling object Upon startup, or after a new registration request, the Scheduler starts with a Calendar object of the current system time and checks if there are any entries in the database that match this point in time. If there are, they are executed and the process starts over. If there aren't, the time in the Calendar object is incremented by one second and the entreis are rechecked. This repeats until there is one entry or more that match(es). (Discrete Event Simulation) The Scheduler will then remember that timestamp, sleep and wake every second to check if it is already there. If it happens to wake up and the time has already passed, it starts over, likewise if the time has come and the jobs have been executed. Edit: Thanks for pointing me to Quartz. I'm looking for something much smaller, however.

    Hi, I found this answer about external configuration files. I'm trying to do a similar thing. I have a small webapplication called StatsGen I want to include in other projects, and for convenience I'd like to have the settings inside the bin folder, in a config file with an appropriate name, in my case: StatsGen.config. So I've put these line in the web.config (as explained in the answer I mentioned above): <configSections> <section name="StatsGenSettings" restartOnExternalChanges="true" type="System.Configuration.NameValueFileSectionHandler" /> <!--sectionGroups--> </configSections> <StatsGenSettings configSource="StatsGen.config"></StatsGenSettings> <!--and here comes the rest... appSettings etc.--> Inside the bin folder, I created a StatsGen.xml file, then renamed it to StatsGen.config. It looks like this: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <StatsGenSettings> <add key="Password" value="myStatsPass" /> <add key="ConnectionString" value="Server=mydbsrv;Database=myDB;User ID=myUser;Password=myPass" /> </StatsGenSettings> I created an Helper class, as suggested in the answer. I've tried to exlude the helper and just to get access to the key, like this: NameValueCollection _settings = ConfigurationManager.GetSection("StatsGenSettings") as NameValueCollection; And I get this error: Unable to open configSource file 'StatsGen.config'. (C:\Users\pbo\Documents\Visual Studio 2010\Projects\StatsGen\StatsGen\web.config line 21) At line 21 I just have this, as explained above: <StatsGenSettings configSource="StatsGen.config"></StatsGenSettings> So now I'm wondering, what's wrong? Some detailed help would be cool... like: where exactly should I declare the StatsGenSettings element inside the web.config?   • Is there any danger in committing to a component library such as SmartGwt or Swing?

    Since February this year I have been working on an app that's built using SmartGWT components. Generally, I find the components very nice to work with, and the fact that they're open source and free to use is just fantastic. However, I can't seem to shake the feeling that it's not a durable way of developing, but I can't quite explain why. Maybe it's because I know that any minute now the team developing it could decide to stop, which would leave me and my team in a bit of a pickle, but I'm sure there must be something more. I have been trying to find ways of explaining this feeling to myself, but to no avail. Therefore I turn to you, dear community, to ask if you can come up with a good reason why committing to building your app (that's supposed to be around for many more years to come) using a component library such as SmartGWT is a bad idea? Is there any reason I should just have developed the components myself? Or did I make the right choice when deciding not to reinvent the wheel and just go for what was readily available?

    Using ActiveObjects as my ORM and Gson as my JSON processor. Ran into a problem going toJson from persisted objects. The problem is that my persisted class is actually an Interface and AO is proxying that object under the hood. Here's some sample code: Venue venue = manager.get(Venue.class, id); gson.toJson(venue); Comes up with this exception: java.lang.UnsupportedOperationException: Expecting parameterized type, got interface java.lang.reflect.InvocationHandler. Because venue.getClass().getName() gives: $Proxy228 I've tried a few solutions in various combinations: gsonBuilder.registerTypeAdapter(Venue.class, newVenueSerializer()); Type listType = new TypeToken<Venue>() {}.getType(); Nothing has worked so far and I'm using a wonky field-by-field workaround. Any suggestions? I'm not married to Gson, so if there's an alternative library that can do this I'd be happy to use it.
