• PPF Savings Interest Rate Increased To 8.6% From 8% [India]

  Here is some good news to small Indian investors who save money in Public Provident Fund(PPF) accounts operated in Post Offices and few nationalized banks – returns of your PPF savings are going to increase. Indian government has decided to increase the rate of interest paid to customers from 8% to 8.6%. To put it in numbers, if you have a 2,00,000 of savings in PPF account they are going give returns of 17,200/- per annum compared to 16,000/- returns at 8%. Also the the maximum cap on the investments in to PPF account per annum is increased to 1,00,000 from 70,000/-. PPF is one of the safest debt investments that gives very decent returns, but if you are a salaried employee with PF account then consider investing in Voluntary PF(VPF) instead of PPF as VPF returns are higher than PPF. • Is having functionality in DB a road block to scalability?

  I may not be able to give the right title to the question. But here it is, We are developing financial portal for wealth management. We are expecting over 10000 clients to use the application. The portal calculates various performance analytics based on the the technical analysis of the stock market. We developed lot of the functionality through Stored procedures, user defined functions, triggers etc. through Database. We thought we can gain huge performance boost doing stuff directly in database than through C# code. And we actually did get a huge performance boost. When I tried to brag about the achievement to our CTO, he counter questioned my decision of having functionality implemented in database rather than code. According to him such applications suffer scalability problems. In his words "These days things are kept in memory/cache. Clustered data is hard to manage over time. Facebook, Google have nothing in database. It is the era of thin servers and thick clients. DB is used only to store plain data and functionality should be completely decoupled from the database." Can you guys please give me some suggestions as to whether what he says is right. How to go about architect such an application?

• Adaptive Case Management Modeling with CMMN by Jessica Ray

  A new version of Oracle BPM Suite 11.1.1.7 with Adaptive Case Management (ACM) is now available, so what will that mean for requirements gathering? BPM project requirements can be documented using Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN 2.0). For ACM, there is a new notation in the works. It is called Case Management Model and Notation (CMMN). For now, this notation isn’t included as a modeling tool in the new version of Oracle BPM Suite 11.1.1.7 with ACM, but it is possible that a modeling tool could be included in a future release. What is CMMN? CMMN is a standard intended to capture the common elements that Case Management Products use, the same way that BPMN is a standard for BPM products (such as Oracle BPM). CMMN is created by the Object Management Group (OMG) and is still in the beta version. In April 2014, OMG released the second beta version the CMMN 1.0, and the most recent version is available here. CMMN captures some of the elements that are commonly used when talking about ACM such as Cases, Milestones, and Tasks. It also introduces some elements that you may not automatically hear when talking about ACM such as Stages, Events, and Decorators. • MVVM Light V4.1 with support for Windows Phone 8

  Today is a very exciting day: After the official release of Windows 8 (and Microsoft Surface!) on Friday, and the official release of Windows Phone 8 on Monday, the Build conference is starting! This is the conference in which we will learn all about the developer experience for Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8. As a partner of Microsoft, I had the privilege of trying out some of the new things early, and this gave me the opportunity to port MVVM Light to Windows Phone 8 (it was already running for Windows 8), and today I am officially publishing this new version. Before you go and update, please not the following: V4.1 (4.1.24.0) only supports Visual Studio 2012 (and Express). If for some reason you are still using Visual Studio 2010, don’t despair! In the next few days I will publish an update supporting these versions as well. But for now, please only upgrade if you are on VS12! • both IPV4 and IPV6 at the same time over DSL connection?

  Let me describe my situation: while I connect computer with the wire, I've got an IPV6 address automatically, there's a "Wired connection" tab in network manager, and I can access an website that support IPV6 (google,facebook,twitter...)with a hosts file, or use the proxy like google.com.sixxs.org But if I want to access the whole internet, I have to create a DSL connection with username and password that ISP gave me. BUT after I change my connection into this DSL connection, I cannot access website over IPV6, even there's the site's ipv6 address in /etc/hosts, then I realize that I lose my IPV6 connection, because the ping6 says connect: Network is unreachable. the problem is, there's no IPV6 tab or options about IPV6 in the configure of DSL connection. It feels like I can only use one connection at the same time, but the DSL doesn't support IPV6 and the wired connection doesn't support IPV4(I mean, there's no way to input the password the ISP gave me) maybe make somebody uncomfortable, but when I work in MS windows, there's no such problem, (maybe just feel like) I can access V4 and V6 at the same time. So how to solve with this? thanks a lot. I'm in 11.10 + gnome3

• What scenarios are implementations of Object Management Group (OMG) Data Distribution Service best suited for?

  I've always been a big fan of asynchronous messaging and pub/sub implementations, but coming from a Java background, I'm most familiar with using JMS based messaging systems, such as JBoss MQ, HornetQ, ActiveMQ, OpenMQ, etc. I've also loosely followed the discussion of AMQP. But I recently became aware of the Data Distribution Service Specification from the Object Management Group, and found there are a couple of open-source implementations: OpenSplice OpenDDS It sounds like this stuff is focused on the kind of high-volume scenarios one tends to associate with financial trading exchanges and what-not. My current interest is more along the lines of notifications related to activity stream processing (think Twitter / Facebook) and am wondering if the DDS servers are worth looking into further. Could anyone who has practical experience with this technology, and/or a deep understanding of it, comment on how useful it is, and what scenarios it is best suited for? How does it stack up against more "traditional" JMS servers, and/or AMQP (or even STOMP or OpenWire, etc?) Edit: FWIW, I found some information at this StackOverflow thread. Not a complete answer, but anybody else finding this question might also find that thread useful, hence the added link.

• Ubuntu connects to wireless but doesn't work!

  I just installed Ubuntu 14.04 LTS on my laptop, it connects to my wireless network and shows that it is connected, but when I try to load a webpage or do anything like download Steam for Dota 2, it doesn't work. When I try to connect my Facebook account to Ubuntu, it doesn't work. I want to be able to use Ubuntu with working internet access. • Heading Out to Oracle Open World

  In case you haven't figured it out by now, Oracle reserves an awful lot of announcements for Oracle Open World. As a result, the show is always a lot of fun for geeks. What will the Oracle Solaris team have to say? Will the Oracle Linux team have any surprises? And what about Oracle hardware? For my part, I'll be one of the lizards at the OTN Lounge with the OTN crew, handing out t-shirts to system admins and developers, or anyone who is willing to impersonate one. I understand, not everyone can have the raw animal magnetism of a sysadmin, or the debonair sophistication of a C++ developer, so some of you have no choice but to pretend. I won't judge. I'll also be doing video interviews of as many techie people as I can corner. I've got more than 30 interviews already scheduled. Most of them will be 3-5 minutes long. I'll be asking our best technical minds what's cool about their latest technologies and what impact it will have on system admins or system developers. • Maximum Length Of IP Address: 15 (IPv4) & 39(IPv6)

  Problem You are designing a database table for a web application that requires to store IP address of users who visits the site. The IP address is required to be stored a character data in the table. To define size of the character column you need to know maximum length of IP address. So, what is the maximum length of an IP address? Solution The IPv4 version of IP address is in the following format 255.255.255.255 To store IPv4 address we require 15 characters. The IPv6 version of IP address is grouped into sets of 4 hex digits separated by colons, like the below 2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334 To store IPv6 address you require a 39 characters long column. Conclusion As IPv4 and IPv6 are the commonly use protocols, you better define a column with 39 characters length so that both the format address are saved in to the table without any issues. • Best practices for App Idea ownership and shares

  I am developing apps on my sparetime. I am the sole developer, and two non-programmer friends of mine provide vision, content, algorithms and ideas. We always agree happily on all the features, todos and prioritizations. But naturally, coding it is the biggest part. When selling, we agree on splitting profit equally, that is 33% each. But version 1.0 naturally does not sell much. And I go on to try to make the app more viral. This includes tons of stuff where the others are of little help. Examples: Adding support for sharing, facebook connect, gameifying, letting users add content, home page, support, maintenance, server services to make it easier for to update content. The list is long. Suddenly I will be doing 100% of a lot of work but only "own" a third of the income. My friends may either "fade out" of the project after 1.0, or they continue to contribute, but with less value and I would rather exchange them for more programmers or graphic designers. The effort they made to version 1.0 is worth a lot to the app and I realize I would have never done it without them. But I am doing all the work in the end. It is hard to negotiate about splitting 90, 5, 5 instead of 33% each, because the idea is still theirs. How to solve this? What are the best practices to regard the ownership of the app? What kind of agreements could I make that make it beneficial and motivational for me to continue developing the app?

• Using AdSense to show ads to logged-in users

  I know that you can grant authorization permissions to Google AdSense so that it can 'log in' and see what other logged in users can see (e.g. in a private forum), so that the ads it displays are better targetted. Extending this principle further: I am making a site which will show completely different content for each individual user (i.e. not 'common' content like a forum in which everybody sees essentially the same thing). You could think of this content as similar to the way each Facebook user has a different news feed, but it is the 'same' page. Complicating things further, the URLs for this site will be simple, e.g. '/home' and '/somepage', and will not usually include unique identifiers to differentiate between users (e.g. '/home?user=32i42'). My questions are: Is creating an account purely for AdSense to log in to the site with worth it in this case, seeing as it will be seeing it's own 'personalized' version and not any other user's? More importantly: is that against the Google AdSense Terms of Service? (I can't seem to figure that one out) How would you go about this problem?

• What Should I Do? [closed]

  What is a reasonable goal in terms of traffic for my Flex 3 site: www.brainpinata.com Since I began a couple of months ago, I've gotten roughly 5500 ad views and 280 ad clicks. And the ad revenue is a whopping $4.80. (I don't use Google Adsense). I advertise my site using Google Adwords to try to build traffic. My budget is $10/day. What should I do? a) Push the marketing. Add a blog. Try to get backlinks, contact blogs, start a Facebook page, tweet, etc. b) Google is only indexing the static content in the SWF. The questions/answers are pulled from a mySQL database. So, Google doesn't index 99% of the content. Should I re-do the site in HTML/Javascript and hard-code the questions for each puzzle? (This would be a challenge as I don't know javascript worth squat.) Or should I hard-code the questions in XML and put them in the Flex app? If I put the questions in an XML file it's roughly 500 KB. Other ideas? c) Should I switch ad networks? (I currently get about 100 visitors a day). My ad network pays so little that if I were to make even $500/month, I would need 550,000 ad views/month, which seems impossible. If I go ahead and switch ad networks, I need to find one that allows iFrames as I've got a Flex website. Which ad networks permit their ads to be shown in iFrames? d) Should I cut and run? I put a lot of work into this project and it would really stink to get nothing out of it. I'm looking for some good advice. Looking forward to your suggestions. Thank you. -Laxmidi

• Create device receive SMS parse to text ( SMS Gateway )

  I want to use a server as a device to run a script to parse a SMS text in the following way. I. The person types in a specific and special cell phone number (Similar to Facebook’s 32556 number used to post on your wall) II. The user types a text message. III. The user sends the text message. IV. The message is sent to some kind of Device (the server) or SMS Gateway and receives it. V. The thing described above that the message is sent to then parse the test message. I understand that these three question will mix Programming and Server Stuff and could reside here or at DBA.SE How would I make such a cell phone number (described in step I) that would be sent to the Device? How do I create the device that then would receive it? Finally, how do I Parse the text message? I don't want to pay for cloud space, server scripting stuff or server space; I want to just use a free webserver to do this totally free - meaning I will have to do more on my own... • Book Review&ndash;Getting Started With OAuth 2.0

  Getting Started With OAuth 2.0, by Ryan Boyd, provides an introduction to the latest version of the OAuth protocol. The author starts off by exploring the origins of OAuth, along with its importance, and why developers should care about it. The bulk of this book involves a discussion of the various authorization flows that developers will need to consider when developing applications that will incorporate OAuth to manage user access and authorization. The author explains in detail which flow is appropriate to use based on the application being developed, as well as how to implement each type with step-by-step examples. Note that the examples in the book are focused on the Google and Facebook APIs. Personally, I would have liked to see some examples with the Twitter API as well. In addition to that, the author also discusses security considerations, error handling (what is returned if the access request fails), and access tokens (when are access tokens refreshed, and how access can be revoked). This book provides a good starting point for those developers looking to understand what OAuth is and how they can leverage it within their own applications. The book wraps up with a list of tools and libraries that are available to further assist the developer in exploring the APIs supporting the OAuth specification. I highly recommend this book as a must-read for developers at all levels that have not yet been exposed to OAuth. • Who is a CMS really for?

  I have started lately discovering Content Management Systems, and I was wondering, who is really CMS for? What I mean by that: is it only for companies, small businesses or individuals, that pays a contractor to make a website that it's users can just upload content through a easy interface. Or is it used also by programmers, to build their own websites, projects? Would a Facebook, Tweeter, StackExhange ever started by using a CMS, a very powerful one for example. Would you as a programmer build your own "fancy" website on top of a CMS, for example like Typo3, or you would build it from scratch? P.S To be more clear is a summary: What I mean to begin with is, would I as a developer choose a CMS to develop a website that can be scaled with a big base of users, be stuck if I choose to start with a CMS system. What if I build a website using CMS, and the website explodes in popularity, and then I wanted to add much more functionality that I have planed, is it possible that the CMS will limit the growth, because it might have not been build for that kind of scale?

• Data Center Modernization: Harness the power of Oracle Exalogic and Exadata with PeopleSoft

Allegis Group is a $6+ billion company, offering a full range of specialized staffing and recruiting solutions to clients in a wide range of industries.   The company processes about 133,000 paychecks per week, every week of the year. With 300 offices around the world and the hefty task of managing HR and payroll, the PeopleSoft system at Allegis  is a mission-critical application. The firm is in the midst of a data center modernization initiative. Part of that project meant moving the company's PeopleSoft applications (Financials and HR Modules as well as Custom Time & Expense module) to a converged infrastructure.     The company ran a proof of concept with four different converged architectures before deciding upon Exadata and Exalogic as the platform of choice.   Performance combined with High availability for running mission-critical payroll processes drove this decision.  During the testing on Exadata and Exalogic Allegis applied a particular (11-F) tax update in production environment. What job ran for roughly six hours completed in less than 1.5 hours. With additional tuning the second run of the Tax update 11-F reduced to 33 minutes - a 90% improvement!     Not only that, the move will help the company save money on middleware by consolidating use of Oracle licensing in a single platform.   Summary With a modern data center powered by Exalogic and Exadata to run mission-critical PeopleSoft HR and Financial Applications, Allegis is positioned to manage business growth and improve employee productivity.
