• Is there an online identicon creator?

  I thought the pictures associated with our profiles were automatically generated until they were manually changed. A lot of people have these cool identicons based on their IP address. How can I get my own identicon? I am looking for an online generator. Gravator does not seem to have any options to generate identicons. Edit: I will probably accept your answer if you just tell me how you made your identicon (and it did not involve downloading/installing stuff)

• Squid vs mod_proxy (apache)

  Hi, New to servers, been hovering on http://highscalability.com/ for some days. Most of the architectures there show that people are using squid for proxy. Apache also provided mod_proxy which to a noob eye seems pretty much the same. Is there a perticular reason to opt for squid instead of mod_proxy? Thanks

• Outlook accepting meetings on behalf of?

  A couple of my users are having a problem where they will accept a meeting request, but the accept notice sent to the meeting coordinator says, "Accepted on behalf of X user by Y user." I have triple checked the settings for the permissions, and none of the people accepting on behalf of have access. (Not that they are actually doing the accepting anyways.) We are currently using an Exchage2003 server with Office 2007. OS wise it's XP pro SP3.

• Is there any way I can share the 3.42GB download of Windows 8.1 from Windows Store?

  Windows 8.1 is out and I would like to know if it is possible to share the Windows 8.1 download upgrade between different computers so that I don't have to download it over and over again? This might be helpful for people who are on a metered connection. Store is downloading 3.42GB of data so it must be stored somewhere. Is there any way I can copy it to my other computers and start the setup so that I don't have to download it over and over again on each computer I own?

  I use a localized version of Firefox whose options/preferences menu and about:config entries differ from the default English base distribution. When I'm discussing Firefox on international forums, it's hard to tell people what options I alter and what values I use, since the localized names are different. Is there an exhaustive list of the about:config entries that can be changed from the graphical preferences/options dialog; something I can use as a reference for translating my localized names?

• How do you update an Excel file (Data Refresh and update formulas) WITHOUT opening the file?

  I have an Excel file that want to update and save automatically with out having to open it or manually interact with. Manually, I open the file up and hit data refresh which goes and does a SQL query and then hit F9 for the formulas to update and then I just close/save. (I then would mail the file out to people using a perl script or use SAS JMP to run some numbers/charts and also mail them out. Basically I need to script some things which require the XLS file to be updated.)

Queries may be run on either of the two servers because they are both production sites, so the replication can't just work one way.   I have a user ftpadmin: -bash-3.2$ id ftpadmin uid=10001(ftpadmin) gid=2525(fsg) groups=2525(fsg),10005(git) The important group to note is "git" Then I have my git repository: ls -al drwxrwxr-x 7 git git 4096 Apr 20 14:17 fsg So ftpadmin is a member of git, and git has given all permissions to people in the group. Why do I see this when I login as ftpadmin: -bash-3.2$ ls -al /home/git/ ls: /home/git/fsg: Permission denied ... Seems like I should have permission...

• Fail2ban memory usage

  Since my server is under a sustain DNS amplification attack (DDOS), I configured fail2ban and initially my outgoing traffic dropped markedly. Anyway, after a few hours (mostly +10), fail2ban uses about 75% ram and seems to be crashed in some way, because the outgoing traffic raises imediatly after. When I searched the web for the memory problem, I found some people complaining about high fail2ban memory usages as well. But the recommended solution, to insert an ulimit command into a fail2ban config file, did not change that much for me.

  Can I configure my domain, example.com's name servers as: ns1.dyndns.com ns2.dyndns.com ns1.opendns.com ns2.opendns.com That is, combining free dns services to create a redundant name server array? Note these name servers from different companies are not aware other companies' name servers also serve our domain. In case one company, say, ns1(2).dyndns.com is down, will people experience interruption when visiting my example.com? If one name server is unreachable, the next name server will be tried, or?

  From what I can tell this is recent error that has started to occur on my localserver: Can't connect to MySQL server on 'localhost' (10048). My site will work for a while then it will randomly throw this error then start working again. Any advice on how to fix this? I have searched online and most people claim that it is a windows based error which needs a registry fix but I wanted to see if anyone else has encountered this issue and has any better advice?   I'm currently generating documentation on one machine, and publishing it to a web server using the following commands in a script: net use "\\someShare" PASSWORD /user:username del /S /Q "\\someShare" xcopy /E /Y Documentation\html\* "\\someShare\" However, it feels like a really bad idea to have a password as plain text in the script, so I'm looking for alternatives to my current solution. Ideas? I definitely would appreciate a solution that uses some kind of access control, as many different people should be allowed to publish their own documentation to the web server, but not mess with each other's docs.

• Users take over a minute to log onto a 2008 windows server. LSM.exe running at 100MB+ memory.

  We've a 64bit Windows Server 2008 running Remote Desktop. The application lsm.exe (the local session manager) appears to be leaking memory. Although the memory usage is quite low when the server is rebooted, this continues to climb until people can no longer log in. The server has no audio card and does not have any AV software installed. The server is fully service packed. (Service pack 2) What could be causing this, and how would I fix it?

  I found this hard drive on NewEgg: Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST31500341AS 1.5TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive (bare drive) - OEM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148337 And there are quite a few substantial bad reviews about the drive freezing periodically. If you search for a bit, you can find several forums with people having problems, but of course forums don't get updated when resolutions to those problems are found. I'm just wondering, does anyone know what the final verdict regarding the freezing issue with these hard drives is?

  my headphones are stereo but I would like the sound from the left and right to be combined then sent to both headphones. The reason is I'm watching a video where the people speaking are in the right ear as well as the music but they never speak in the left ear (it is not because they on the right side of the screen) If I take the right headphone off then I only hear the music in my left and there is no speaking.
