  • FileMaker Pro vs CiviCRM

    - by Silvana Procopio
Hello, I would like some input about these two softwares since we are trying to change our current Access database, which has brought many problems and is completely outdated (it was built 10 years ago). These are the 2 options we have in mind and being a non-profit organization (20 employees), it's quite a big decision in particular in terms of costs. Due to the type of business, we will need several hours of development too. Any feedback will be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much in advance, Silvana

  • Display large PDF using iPhone SDK

    - by MadJawa
Hello, I was wondering what is the best way to display a big PDF file (it's a map actually) using iPhone SDK (the file is around 5MB), because it's really slow in a UIWebView. I want to be able to scroll through the PDF and zoom in/out. Also do you think that it would be better to convert it to a PNG? Thank in advance

  • Upgrading from VS2008 Pro to VS2010 Pro without MSDN

    - by Richard Bysouth
Hi I'm looking to upgrade from Visual Studio 2008 Pro to Visual Studio 2010 Pro without MSDN. On the MSDN US site there's pricing for Upgrade from Standard for $299. On the UK MSDN site however, the only options are to buy with MSDN for £484.99. Obviously a big difference in price there! I can't find any info as to what qualifies for the Upgrade from Standard - anyone know about this? Or whether it's available in the UK? thanks Richard

  • WinForms: Making a set of controls scale vertically.

    - by DonaldRay
    I have a Windows Form that displays several DataGridViews in the following layout: (No access to image hosting at work, so please pardon the ASCII art...) +-----------------------------------------+ ¦+-----------++--------------------------+¦ ¦¦ ¦¦ ¦¦ ¦+-----------+¦ ¦¦ |+-----------+¦ ¦¦ ¦¦ ¦¦ ¦¦ ¦+-----------+¦ ¦¦ |+-----------+¦ ¦¦ ¦¦ ¦¦ ¦¦ ¦+-----------++--------------------------+¦ +-----------------------------------------+ Unfortunately, when the user resizes the form to be taller, the form ends up looking like this: +-----------------------------------------+ ¦+-----------++--------------------------+¦ ¦¦ ¦¦ ¦¦ ¦+-----------+¦ ¦¦ | | || | | || |+-----------+¦ ¦¦ ¦¦ ¦¦ ¦¦ ¦+-----------+¦ ¦¦ | | || | | || |+-----------+¦ ¦¦ ¦¦ ¦¦ ¦¦ ¦+-----------++--------------------------+¦ +-----------------------------------------+ Instead of this: +-----------------------------------------+ ¦+-----------++--------------------------+¦ ¦¦ ¦¦ ¦¦ ¦¦ ¦¦ ¦¦ ¦+-----------+¦ ¦¦ |+-----------+¦ ¦¦ ¦¦ ¦¦ ¦¦ ¦¦ ¦¦ ¦¦ ¦+-----------+¦ ¦¦ |+-----------+¦ ¦¦ ¦¦ ¦¦ ¦¦ ¦¦ ¦¦ ¦¦ ¦+-----------++--------------------------+¦ +-----------------------------------------+ To reproduce this, anchor the Top-Left DataGridView to Top-Left, the Center-Left DataGridView to Left, and the Bottom-Left DataGridView to Bottom-Left, and the big DataGridView to all 4. What can I do to get the behavior I want?

  • Investigating the root cause behind SharePoint's "request not found in the TrackedRequests"

    - by Muhimbi
We have a long standing issue in our bug tracking system about the dreaded "ERROR: request not found in the TrackedRequests. We might be creating and closing webs on different threads." message in SharePoint's trace log. As we develop Workflow software for the SharePoint market, we look into this issue from time to time to make sure it is not caused by our products. I have personally come to the conclusion that this is a problem in SharePoint, but perhaps someone else can prove me wrong. Here is what I know: According to the hundreds of search results returned by Google on this topic, this issue appears to be mainly related to SharePoint Workflows, both SharePoint Designer and Visual Studio based workflows. Assuming ULS logging is set to Monitorable, the easiest way to reproduce this problem is to create a new SharePoint Designer Workflow, attach it to a document library, set it to auto start on add/update, don't add any actions, save the workflow and upload a file to the document library. The error is only visible in the SharePoint trace log, it does not appear to impact the execution of the workflow at hand. I have verified that the problem occurs on 32 bit as well as 64 bit systems, Win2K3 and 2K8, WSS and MOSS with SharePoint versions up to the December 2009 Cumulative Update (6524). The problem does not occur when a workflow is started manually. There are dozens of related posts on MSDN Forums, hundreds on Google, one on StackOverflow and none on SharePoint Overflow. There appears to be no answer. Does anyone have any idea about what is going on, what is causing this and if we should worry or file this under 'Red Herrings'.

  • What web frameworks and languages have the lowest development time?

    - by waitinforatrain
Hi guys, I'm trying to get a few web development ideas off the ground. Unfortunately I will be the only developer, so I'm focusing on getting a good debuggable, testable setup going that I can develop applications rapidly with. Which languages, development styles and frameworks would you recommend for rapid development? Last time I checked RoR was the next big thing but that was a while back.

  • Tunnel over HTTPS

    - by ephemient
At my workplace, the traffic blocker/firewall has been getting progressively worse. I can't connect to my home machine on port 22, and lack of ssh access makes me sad. I was previously able to use SSH by moving it to port 5050, but I think some recent filters now treat this traffic as IM and redirect it through another proxy, maybe. That's my best guess; in any case, my ssh connections now terminate before I get to log in. These days I've been using Ajaxterm over HTTPS, as port 443 is still unmolested, but this is far from ideal. (Sucky terminal emulation, lack of port forwarding, my browser leaks memory at an amazing rate...) I tried setting up mod_proxy_connect on top of mod_ssl, with the idea that I could send a CONNECT localhost:22 HTTP/1.1 request through HTTPS, and then I'd be all set. Sadly, this seems to not work; the HTTPS connection works, up until I finish sending my request; then SSL craps out. It appears as though mod_proxy_connect takes over the whole connection instead of continuing to pipe through mod_ssl, confusing the heck out of the HTTPS client. Is there a way to get this to work? I don't want to do this over plain HTTP, for several reasons: Leaving a big fat open proxy like that just stinks A big fat open proxy is not good over HTTPS either, but with authentication required it feels fine to me HTTP goes through a proxy -- I'm not too concerned about my traffic being sniffed, as it's ssh that'll be going "plaintext" through the tunnel -- but it's a lot more likely to be mangled than HTTPS, which fundamentally cannot be proxied Requirements: Must work over port 443, without disturbing other HTTPS traffic (i.e. I can't just put the ssh server on port 443, because I would no longer be able to serve pages over HTTPS) I have or can write a simple port forwarder client that runs under Windows (or Cygwin) Edit DAG: Tunnelling SSH over HTTP(S) has been pointed out to me, but it doesn't help: at the end of the article, they mention Bug 29744 - CONNECT does not work over existing SSL connection preventing tunnelling over HTTPS, exactly the problem I was running into. At this point, I am probably looking at some CGI script, but I don't want to list that as a requirement if there's better solutions available.

  • Opening HTML Table in Excel - numbers are getting changed

    - by nickfranceschina
so I have this HTML table with a bunch of big numbers in it that I want to open in Excel 2007... you can follow along at home: <table> <tr> <td>this is a big number</td> </tr><tr> <td>1111111</td> </tr><tr> <td>2335322864</td> </tr><tr> <td>23353228641</td> </tr><tr> <td>233532286418</td> </tr><tr> <td>2335322864187</td> </tr><tr> <td>23353228641877</td> </tr><tr> <td>233532286418777</td> </tr><tr> <td>2335322864187774</td> </tr><tr> <td>23353228641877745</td> </tr><tr> <td>233532286418777456</td> </tr><tr> <td>2335322864187774562</td> </tr><tr> <td>23353228641877745623</td> </tr><tr> <td>233532286418777456238</td> </tr> when I open this file in Excel it starts converting those numbers to scientific notation when they get over 10 digits in length... and in doing so, it starts changing the actual number and replaces least significant digits to zeros how can I tell Excel not to do this?

  • Should we have a database independent SQL like query language in Django? [closed]

    - by Yugal Jindle
Note : I know we have Django ORM already that keeps things database independent and converts to the database specific SQL queries. Once things starts getting complicated it is preferred to write raw SQL queries for better efficiency. When you write raw sql queries your code gets trapped with the database you are using. I also understand its important to use the full power of your database that can-not be achieved with the django orm alone. My Question : Until I use any database specific feature, why should one be trapped with the database. For instance : We have a query with multiple joins and we decided to write a raw sql query. Now, that makes my website postgres specific. Even when I have not used any postgres specific feature. I feel there should be some fake sql language which can translate to any database's sql query. Even Django's ORM can be built over it. So, that if you go out of ORM but not database specific - you can still remain database independent. I asked the same question to Jacob Kaplan Moss (In person) : He advised me to stay with the database that I like and endure its whole power, to which I agree. But my point was not that we should be database independent. My point is we should be database independent until we use a database specific feature. Please explain, why should be there a fake sql layer over the actual sql ?

  • Matching unmatched strings based on a unknown pattern

    - by Polity
Alright guys, i really hurt my brain over this one and i'm curious if you guys can give me any pointers towards the right direction i should be taking. The situation is this: Lets say, i have a collection of strings (let it be clear that the pattern of this strings is unknown. For a fact, i can say that the string contain only signs from the ASCII table and therefore, i dont have to worry about weird Chinese signs). For this example, i take the following collection of strings (note that the strings dont have to make any human sence so dont try figguring them out :)): "[001].[FOO].[TEST] - 'foofoo.test'", "[002].[FOO].[TEST] - 'foofoo.test'", "[003].[FOO].[TEST] - 'foofoo.test'", "[001].[FOO].[TEST] - 'foofoo.test.sample'", "[002].[FOO].[TEST] - 'foofoo.test.sample'", "-001- BAR.[TEST] - 'bartest.xx1", "-002- BAR.[TEST] - 'bartest.xx1" Now, what i need to have is a way of finding logical groups (and subgroups) of these set of strings, so in the above example, just by rational thinking, you can combine the first 3, the 2 after that and the last 2. Also the resulting groups from the first 5 can be combined in one main group with 2 subgroups, this should give you something like this: { { "[001].[FOO].[TEST] - 'foofoo.test'", "[002].[FOO].[TEST] - 'foofoo.test'", "[003].[FOO].[TEST] - 'foofoo.test'", } { "[001].[FOO].[TEST] - 'foofoo.test.sample'", "[002].[FOO].[TEST] - 'foofoo.test.sample'", } { "-001- BAR.[TEST] - 'bartest.xx1", "-002- BAR.[TEST] - 'bartest.xx1" } } Sorry for the layout above but indenting with 4 spaces doesnt seem to work correctly (or im frakk'n it up). Anyways, I'm not sure how to approach this problem (how to get the result desired as indicated above). First of, i thought of creating a huge set of regexes which would parse most known patterns but the amount of different patterns is just to huge that this isn't realistic. Another think i thought of was parsing each indidual word within a string (so strip all non alphabetic or numeric characters and split by those), and if X% matches, i can assume the strings belong to the same group. (where X wil probably be around 80/90). However, i find the area of speculation kinda big. For example, when matching strings with each 20 words, the change of hitting above 80% is kinda big (that means that 4 words can differ), however when matching only 8 words, 2 words at most can differ. My question to you is, what would be a logical approach in the above situation? Thanks in advance!

  • Exception Handling in SQl Stored Procedures?

    - by Rishabh Ohri
Hi All, Adding Exceptional Handling is a good practise, but I have a doubt, In our database we have 10 SPs which are accessed by our data access layer, there is not much logic and the queries are also not big.The purpose of keeping the queries in SPs was to allow paged data to be easily passed to the presentation layer. So, my question is, should error handling be added to the SPs in this scenario when they do not include large complex queries?

  • what localization changes are needed for Arabic with Java Applet

    - by Tom
How big task is it to implement support for Arabic localization, our Java 1.5 Applet was designed as fully localizable (european languages) but now we plan to add also arabic as a new language. We are using custom GUI text i/o components inherited from Component class using e.g. Drawstring, how well is arabic supported within Component class ? The keyboard input is done with KeyListener getKeyChar, getKeyCode etc.

  • CDNs and domains

    - by Martind
Hi all! A lot of big websites (facebook etc) are settings up CDN's for their content. Now I notice, that these CDN's are not always on the original domain. Example: Facebook pictures are on "photos-a.ak.fbcdn.net" Why is that? Is there a performance-gain in not having lots of subdomains on the "primary" domain (facebook.com)

  • hand coding a parser

    - by John Leidegren
For all you compiler gurus, I wanna write a recursive descent parser and I wanna do it with just code. No generating lexers and parsers from some other grammar and don't tell me to read the dragon book, i'll come around to that eventually. I wanna get into the gritty details about implementing a lexer and parser for a reasonable simple langauge, say CSS. And I wanna do this right. This will probably end up being a series of questions but right now I'm starting with a lexer. Tokenization rules for CSS can be found here. I find my self writing code like this (hopefully you can infer the rest from this snippet): public CssToken ReadNext() { int val; while ((val = _reader.Read()) != -1) { var c = (char)val; switch (_stack.Top) { case ParserState.Init: if (c == ' ') { continue; // ignore } else if (c == '.') { _stack.Transition(ParserState.SubIdent, ParserState.Init); } break; case ParserState.SubIdent: if (c == '-') { _token.Append(c); } _stack.Transition(ParserState.SubNMBegin); break; What is this called? and how far off am I from something reasonable well understood? I'm trying to balence something which is fair in terms of efficiency and easy to work with, using a stack to implement some kind of state machine is working quite well, but I'm unsure how to continue like this. What I have is an input stream, from which I can read 1 character at a time. I don't do any look a head right now, I just read the character then depending on the current state try to do something with that. I'd really like to get into the mind set of writing reusable snippets of code. This Transition method is currently means to do that, it will pop the current state of the stack and then push the arguments in reverse order. That way, when I write Transition(ParserState.SubIdent, ParserState.Init) it will "call" a sub routine SubIdent which will, when complete, return to the Init state. The parser will be implemented in much the same way, currently, having everyhing in a single big method like this allows me to easily return a token when I found one, but it also forces me to keep everything in one single big method. Is there a nice way to split these tokenization rules into seperate methods? Any input/advice on the matter would be greatly appriciated!

  • Ubuntu 11.10 ATI Drivers vesa park

    - by Matthias
This is probably not an issue, from all I can get it seems my hardware and drivers are properly installed. However when I go to system settings - system info - graphics. I get Driver: VESA:PARK. Experience: Standard. my graphics card is a: Ati Mobility Radeon HD 5470 512MB. I am pretty sure it's not a same-die GPU since there is a fan exhaust at the side of my laptop which I presume is the exhaust for the GPU... I have no clue whatsoever what this means. I installed the ati drivers first using the 'additional drivers' method. However I also decided to look a manual installation up via the terminal since I've had problems before with Ubuntu and ati cards. I used wget and something among the lines of sh dpkg -i. I can recall exactly, I took them from another stackoverflow answer. Anyway, it seems everything is installed properly since it shows up with these commands: sudo lshw -C video fglrxinfo however the first command seems to detect hardware, not the driver per se, although the driver is probably needed to detect the hardware anyway which would indicate its properly installed. I am still not sure about that VES:PARK thing though. I'd like to know what it means.. Also, if someone happens to know a good way of testing if the gpu is connected/being used...some sort of benchmark maybe...I'd like to hear it. P.s. I can find my way around in Ubuntu but I would probably still be considered a rookie by more experienced users.

  • Using LCD with Arduino

    - by Nik
Hi, Is it possible to use any LCD with arduino or I need to stick to some for which the libraries are available. I'm just starting out with arduino and know nothing about interfacing LCDs with arduino. I'm planing to buy Old IPhone LCD as they are cheap and big enough to do something useful with them. Also to use iPhone LCD do I need to add some extra circuit or directly plugging iPhone LCD into arduino will work? I don't care about the touch feature right now.
