• SQL SERVER – Identify Most Resource Intensive Queries – SQL in Sixty Seconds #028 – Video

  During performance tuning conversation the very first question people often ask is what are the queries offending the server or in another word let us identify the queries which are the most resource intensive. The resources are often described as either Memory, CPU or IO. When we talk about the queries the same is applicable for them as well. The query which is doing lots of reads or writes are for sure resource intensive as well query which are taking maximum CPU time. Performance tuning is a very deep subject and we all have our own preference regarding what should be the first step to tuning and what should be looked with the salt of grain. Though there is no denying that a query which uses more resources than what it should be using for sure require tuning. There are many ways to do identify query using intense resources (e.g. Extended events etc) but in this one we will go by simple DMV. There is a small gotcha we all have to remember about usage of DMV is that it only brings back results from existing cache. So if you have a query which is very resource intensive but is not cached or if you have explicitly removed the query from the cache it will be not part of the result returned by this DMV. It is quite possible that a query is aged and removed from the cache if your cache is not huge. If your cache is large you may want to be careful in running this query during business hours as this query itself can be resource intensive. • Accessing and Updating Data in ASP.NET: Filtering Data Using a CheckBoxList

  Filtering Database Data with Parameters, an earlier installment in this article series, showed how to filter the data returned by ASP.NET's data source controls. In a nutshell, the data source controls can include parameterized queries whose parameter values are defined via parameter controls. For example, the SqlDataSource can include a parameterized SelectCommand, such as: SELECT * FROM Books WHERE Price > @Price. Here, @Price is a parameter; the value for a parameter can be defined declaratively using a parameter control. ASP.NET offers a variety of parameter controls, including ones that use hard-coded values, ones that retrieve values from the querystring, and ones that retrieve values from session, and others. Perhaps the most useful parameter control is the ControlParameter, which retrieves its value from a Web control on the page. Using the ControlParameter we can filter the data returned by the data source control based on the end user's input. While the ControlParameter works well with most types of Web controls, it does not work as expected with the CheckBoxList control. The ControlParameter is designed to retrieve a single property value from the specified Web control, but the CheckBoxList control does not have a property that returns all of the values of its selected items in a form that the CheckBoxList control can use. Moreover, if you are using the selected CheckBoxList items to query a database you'll quickly find that SQL does not offer out of the box functionality for filtering results based on a user-supplied list of filter criteria. The good news is that with a little bit of effort it is possible to filter data based on the end user's selections in a CheckBoxList control. This article starts with a look at how to get SQL to filter data based on a user-supplied, comma-delimited list of values. Next, it shows how to programmatically construct a comma-delimited list that represents the selected CheckBoxList values and pass that list into the SQL query.   Are you looking for a good free replacement for Microsoft Office, but LibreOffice and OpenOffice are not working out well for you? Then you will definitely want to have a look at Kingsoft Office Suite Free 2012, which you can download as a suite or as individual apps. As soon as the installation has completed you will see this window. All relevant file types are checked by default, but you may deselect any that you do not want associated with Kingsoft Office before clicking Close. Special Note: See further below for additional information about the extra formats (i.e. Office 2007 & 2010) that the suite will open. Here is a quick overall view of what the Writer App window looks like. Each of the three apps in the suite will open with the New Document Pane displayed by default on the right side of the window. A closer view of the upper left corner in Writer, Presentation, and Spreadsheets… A look at the Start Menu options available… In our tests with the suite it opened up Microsoft Office 2007 & 2010 documents without any problems. Note: You can also see part of the built-in Tab Bar outlined in red in the upper left corner. The only drawback with the free version of the suite is that you are limited to the Classic Style Interface, which may or may not be a problem depending on your preferences. • Resolving the Access is Denied Error in VSeWSS Deployments

  Visual Studio Extensions for Windows SharePoint Services 1.3 (VSeWSS 1.3) tends to make my life easier unless I'm typing out the words that make up the VSeWSS acronym - really, what a mouthful.  But one of the problems that I routinely encounter are error messages when trying to deploy solutions.  These normally look something like the following: Access is denied. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070005 (E_ACCESSDENIED)) I tried a variety of steps to resolve this issue: Recycling the application pool Restarting IIS Closing Visual Studio Not detaching from the debugger until a request was fully completed Logging off and logging back into Windows etc. Nothing actually worked.  Some of these resolution attempts seemed to help keep the problem from happening quite as frequently, but I still have no idea what EXACTLY causes the problem and it would rear its ugly head from time to time.  Unfortunately, the only resolution I found that seemed to work was to reboot the machine . which is a crappy resolution. Finally sick enough of the problem to spend some time on it, I went on a search and tried to figure out if anyone else was having this issue.  People seem to suggest that turning off the Indexing Service on your machine helps resolve this problem.  I tried turning it off but I kept having issues.  Which was depressing.  Fortunately, I stumbled upon the resolution when I was looking through the services list.  If you encounter the issue, all you have to do is reset the World Wide Web Publishing Service.  I've had a 100% success rate so far with this approach.  I'm not sure if having the Indexing Service is part of the solution, but I've kept it disabled for the time being because I'm really sick of having to reboot my machine to deal with that error message.   Developer’s Guide To Collections in Microsoft® .NET, by Calvin Janes, discusses the various collections available in the built-in NET libraries, as well as  the advantages and disadvantages of using each type of collection. Other areas are also covered including how collections utilize memory, how to use LINQ with collections, using threading with collections, serializing collections, and how to bind collections to controls in Windows Forms, WPF and Silverlight. For developers looking for a simple reference book on collections, then this book will serve that purpose and serve it well. For those looking for a great read from cover-to-cover, they may be disappointed. This book tends to be repetitive in discussion topics, examples, and code samples in the first two parts of the book. In the first part, the author conducts walk-throughs to develop custom collections. In  the second part, the author conducts walk-throughs on using the built-in .NET collections. For experienced .NET developers, the first two parts will not provide much value. However, it is beneficial for new developers who have not worked with the built-in collections in .NET. They will obtain an understanding of the mechanics of the built-in collections and how memory is utilized when using the various types of collections. So in this aspect, new developers will get more value out of this book. The third and fourth parts delve into advanced topics, including using LINQ, threading, serialization and data binding. I find these two parts of the book are well written and flow better than the first two parts. Both beginner and experienced developers will find value in this half of the book, mainly on the topics of threading and serialization. • We Don’t Need No Regions

  If your code reaches a level where you want to hide it behind regions then you have a problem that regions won’t solve. Regions are good to hide things that you don’t want to have knowledge about such as auto-generated code. Normally, when you’re developing you end up reading more code than you write it so why would you want to complicate the reading process. I, for one, would love to have that one discussion around regions where someone convinces me that they solve a problem that has no other alternative solution, but I’m still waiting. The most frequent argument I hear about regions is that they allow you to structure your code, but why don’t just structure it using classes, methods and all that other stuff that OOP is about because at the end of the day, you should be doing object oriented programming and not region oriented programming. Having said that, I do believe that sometimes is helpful to have a quick overview of a code file contents and Visual Studio allows you to do just that through the Collapse to Definitions command (CTRL + M, CTRL + O) which collapses the members of all types; if you like regions, you should try this, it is much more useful to read all the members of a type than all the regions inside a type.

• Friday Fun: Omega Crisis

  Friday is here once again and it’s time to play a fun flash game on company time. Today we take a look at the space shooter Omega Crisis. Omega Crisis At the start of the game you’re given the basic story of the game, defending the space outpost, and instructions on how to play. Controls are easy, just target the enemy and use the left mouse button to fire. After each level you’re shown the results and how many Tech Points you’ve earned. The more Tech Points you earn, you have a better chance of upgrading your weapons and base defense before the next level.   You can also go into Manage Mode by hitting the Space bar, and select gunners and other types of weapons to help defend the outpost. Choose your mission from the timeline after successfully completing a mission. You can also use A,W,D,S to move around the map and see exactly where the enemy ships are coming from. This makes it easier to destroy them before they get too close to your base. This game is a lot of fun and is similar to different “Desktop Defense” type games. If you’re looking for a fun way to waste the afternoon, and not look at TPS reports, Omega Crisis can get you though until the whistle blows. • New Walkthrough Capability in AutoVue 20

  New in AutoVue 20 is the capability to view a 3D model of a building from the inside - this is a very powerful tool for anyone who needs to work with models of plants, refineries, or other buildings. All of the standard AutoVue functionality is available, so you can click on any part of the building to get attribute data, manipulate the view, do measurement, etc. For example, in the image below we've made the Architectural model (Walls, Floors, etc.) transparent, but left the electrical and mechanical models opaque, so it's easy to see where the wires and piping run behind the walls. Additionally you can bring together different files and different types of files, using our digital mockup capability - in the image below the heating and air conditioning sytem on the left came from one file, and the electrical box on the right came from another wile, and the model of the room came from yet a third file, but with everything brought together into AutoVue you can do things like use our measurement capability to ensure there's enough space to get maintenance equipment down the hallway, before the building is even built. This will be the first time that I have visited Russia, and I know that there is a strong ASP.NET community in Russia, so I am very excited about the trip. I don’t speak Russian, so the only words that I recognize off the home page of the conference website are ASP.NET and JavaScript (PHP, Perl, Python, and Ruby must be Russian words).   This How-To Geek School class is intended for people who want to learn more about security when using Windows operating systems. You will learn many principles that will help you have a more secure computing experience and will get the chance to use all the important security tools and features that are bundled with Windows. Obviously, we will share everything you need to know about using them effectively. In this first lesson, we will talk about password security; the different ways of logging into Windows and how secure they are. In the proceeding lesson, we will explain where Windows stores all the user names and passwords you enter while working in this operating systems, how safe they are, and how to manage this data. Moving on in the series, we will talk about User Account Control, its role in improving the security of your system, and how to use Windows Defender in order to protect your system from malware. Then, we will talk about the Windows Firewall, how to use it in order to manage the apps that get access to the network and the Internet, and how to create your own filtering rules. After that, we will discuss the SmartScreen Filter – a security feature that gets more and more attention from Microsoft and is now widely used in its Windows 8.x operating systems. Moving on, we will discuss ways to keep your software and apps up-to-date, why this is important and which tools you can use to automate this process as much as possible. Last but not least, we will discuss the Action Center and its role in keeping you informed about what’s going on with your system and share several tips and tricks about how to stay safe when using your computer and the Internet. Let’s get started by discussing everyone’s favorite subject: passwords. The Types of Passwords Found in Windows In Windows 7, you have only local user accounts, which may or may not have a password. For example, you can easily set a blank password for any user account, even if that one is an administrator. The only exception to this rule are business networks where domain policies force all user accounts to use a non-blank password. In Windows 8.x, you have both local accounts and Microsoft accounts. If you would like to learn more about them, don’t hesitate to read the lesson on User Accounts, Groups, Permissions & Their Role in Sharing, in our Windows Networking series. Microsoft accounts are obliged to use a non-blank password due to the fact that a Microsoft account gives you access to Microsoft services. Using a blank password would mean exposing yourself to lots of problems. Local accounts in Windows 8.1 however, can use a blank password. On top of traditional passwords, any user account can create and use a 4-digit PIN or a picture password. These concepts were introduced by Microsoft to speed up the sign in process for the Windows 8.x operating system. However, they do not replace the use of a traditional password and can be used only in conjunction with a traditional user account password. Another type of password that you encounter in Windows operating systems is the Homegroup password. In a typical home network, users can use the Homegroup to easily share resources. A Homegroup can be joined by a Windows device only by using the Homegroup password. If you would like to learn more about the Homegroup and how to use it for network sharing, don’t hesitate to read our Windows Networking series. What to Keep in Mind When Creating Passwords, PINs and Picture Passwords When creating passwords, a PIN, or a picture password for your user account, we would like you keep in mind the following recommendations: Do not use blank passwords, even on the desktop computers in your home. You never know who may gain unwanted access to them. Also, malware can run more easily as administrator because you do not have a password. Trading your security for convenience when logging in is never a good idea. When creating a password, make it at least eight characters long. Make sure that it includes a random mix of upper and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Ideally, it should not be related in any way to your name, username, or company name. Make sure that your passwords do not include complete words from any dictionary. Dictionaries are the first thing crackers use to hack passwords. Do not use the same password for more than one account. All of your passwords should be unique and you should use a system like LastPass, KeePass, Roboform or something similar to keep track of them. When creating a PIN use four different digits to make things slightly harder to crack. When creating a picture password, pick a photo that has at least 10 “points of interests”. Points of interests are areas that serve as a landmark for your gestures. Use a random mixture of gesture types and sequence and make sure that you do not repeat the same gesture twice. Be aware that smudges on the screen could potentially reveal your gestures to others. The Security of Your Password vs. the PIN and the Picture Password Any kind of password can be cracked with enough effort and the appropriate tools. There is no such thing as a completely secure password. However, passwords created using only a few security principles are much harder to crack than others. If you respect the recommendations shared in the previous section of this lesson, you will end up having reasonably secure passwords. Out of all the log in methods in Windows 8.x, the PIN is the easiest to brute force because PINs are restricted to four digits and there are only 10,000 possible unique combinations available. The picture password is more secure than the PIN because it provides many more opportunities for creating unique combinations of gestures. Microsoft have compared the two login options from a security perspective in this post: Signing in with a picture password. In order to discourage brute force attacks against picture passwords and PINs, Windows defaults to your traditional text password after five failed attempts. The PIN and the picture password function only as alternative login methods to Windows 8.x. Therefore, if someone cracks them, he or she doesn’t have access to your user account password. However, that person can use all the apps installed on your Windows 8.x device, access your files, data, and so on. How to Create a PIN in Windows 8.x If you log in to a Windows 8.x device with a user account that has a non-blank password, then you can create a 4-digit PIN for it, to use it as a complementary login method. In order to create one, you need to go to “PC Settings”. If you don’t know how, then press Windows + C on your keyboard or flick from the right edge of the screen, on a touch-enabled device, then press “Settings”. The Settings charm is now open. Click or tap the link that says “Change PC settings”, on the bottom of the charm. In PC settings, go to Accounts and then to “Sign-in options”. Here you will find all the necessary options for changing your existing password, creating a PIN, or a picture password. To create a PIN, press the “Add” button in the PIN section. The “Create a PIN” wizard is started and you are asked to enter the password of your user account. Type it and press “OK”. Now you are asked to enter a 4-digit pin in the “Enter PIN” and “Confirm PIN” fields. The PIN has been created and you can now use it to log in to Windows. How to Create a Picture Password in Windows 8.x If you log in to a Windows 8.x device with a user account that has a non-blank password, then you can also create a picture password and use it as a complementary login method. In order to create one, you need to go to “PC settings”. In PC Settings, go to Accounts and then to “Sign-in options”. Here you will find all the necessary options for changing your existing password, creating a PIN, or a picture password. To create a picture password, press the “Add” button in the “Picture password” section. The “Create a picture password” wizard is started and you are asked to enter the password of your user account. You are shown a guide on how the picture password works. Take a few seconds to watch it and learn the gestures that can be used for your picture password. You will learn that you can create a combination of circles, straight lines, and taps. When ready, press “Choose picture”. Browse your Windows 8.x device and select the picture you want to use for your password and press “Open”. Now you can drag the picture to position it the way you want. When you like how the picture is positioned, press “Use this picture” on the left. If you are not happy with the picture, press “Choose new picture” and select a new one, as shown during the previous step. After you have confirmed that you want to use this picture, you are asked to set up your gestures for the picture password. Draw three gestures on the picture, any combination you wish. Please remember that you can use only three gestures: circles, straight lines, and taps. Once you have drawn those three gestures, you are asked to confirm. Draw the same gestures one more time. If everything goes well, you are informed that you have created your picture password and that you can use it the next time you sign in to Windows. If you don’t confirm the gestures correctly, you will be asked to try again, until you draw the same gestures twice. To close the picture password wizard, press “Finish”. Where Does Windows Store Your Passwords? Are They Safe? All the passwords that you enter in Windows and save for future use are stored in the Credential Manager. This tool is a vault with the usernames and passwords that you use to log on to your computer, to other computers on the network, to apps from the Windows Store, or to websites using Internet Explorer. By storing these credentials, Windows can automatically log you the next time you access the same app, network share, or website. Everything that is stored in the Credential Manager is encrypted for your protection.

  I cannot seem to get Ubuntu to mount a mac share via SMB or AFP. I've tried the following... AFP: apt-get install afpfs-ng-utils mount_afp afp://user:password@localip/share /mnt/share Error given: "Could not connect, never got a reponse to getstatus, Connection timed out". Which is odd as I can access the share just fine via Mac.
