• Using content from the project in tests

  I am working with Visual Studio 2010 and it's integrated testing functionality. I have an XML file in my project which is set to copy to the output directory. I can access the file just fine when I compile and run the project. But it doesn't exist when I attempt to access it within a TestMethod. It looks like the test is run with the working directory set to an "Out" directory created within the TestResults directory. I can set a breakpoint before I use the file. If I then copy the file into this "Out" directory and continue running the test it accesses the file properly. But that is not really how I want my automated tests to function. Is it possible to tell VS to copy the build directory into this working directory?

• How can I move app.config to a different folder inside the Solution Explorer?

  I'm using Visual Studio 2010. In my Solution Explorer I like to sort my Project items into folders (a folder for Forms, a folder for Classes, a Misc folder, etc.) It seems though that if I move the "app.config" file to a folder named "Config Files" everything works until I change a setting in the Settings.settings file. Once I do that, a new app.config is created and the one that was in the "Config Files" folder did not get updated. I have searched the entire solution for the text "app.config" and did not find any results. How can I move this file so that my Solution Explorer looks nice and clean?

• How to change position of inherited items in an Inherited user control

  I have used a user control as a base class (let's call it BaseUC) with 3 labels (in 3 lines) on it (they are set as protected). And there is another user control that inherits from it (InheritedUC). I have added two more labels in InheritedUC, which are positioned between the base's labels (so there are 5 lines). Everything is fine is Visiual Studio's design UI view. But when I run the application, labels on BaseUC overlap with the ones in InheritedUC and I can't see the ones on the inherited control. Any ideas to fix this? Thank you very much

• Asp.net project is not recognising one of the folders in my class library.

• How to deploy App_Data files with Azure cloud service (web role)

  I have a read-only data file (for IP geolocation) that my web role needs to read. It is currently in the App_Data folder, which is NOT included in the deployment package for the cloud service. Unlike "web deploy", there is no checkbox for an azure cloud service deployment to include/exclude App_Data. Is there a reasonable way to get the deployment package to include the App_Data folder/files? Or is using Azure storage for this sort of thing the better way to go? (cost and performance wise) Am using Visual Studio 2013 and the Azure SDK 2.2

  I have a task to generate reports from a Visual Studio C# application. This is a replacement (caused by new requirements) for a program written using the built-in implementation of Crystal Reports. Although workable, it was far from ideal. The reports have conditional content (If type=1, print this, if type=2 print that.) Crystal does not adjust spacing dynamically and the various pieces were not the same length making for some unprofessional-looking spacing. I had thought of generating the reports in HTML, which would be feasible, but I'm concerned that you lose a degree of control, and I may be asked, e.g. to "move this up a bit" or similar which may be tricky. I'm not either a Crystal guru or an HTML guru. What other reporting technologies are available that would make it easy to drop in parts of different sizes, do table layouts, etc.?

• A gridview for debugging collections?

  Hi Guys, I'm working with fairly large generic collections and I need a quick way to view all the items and their properties in these collections while debugging. When I say view all the items, I mean I would like to view the collection as if it was bound to say.. a gridview. That was I could see all all the item properties listed. Currently VS2010 displays the collection object during debugging, but it takes several clicks before I can view any item's properties within the collection. As I'm using collection with 50 to 100 items in them, I've having a hard time getting a feel for the collection data because of having to click through to view each individual item's properties during debugging. Do you have any ideas or know of a visual studio plugin that can help display collections in a table format or gridview format? Thanks for you time

• Creating a Non-Databound Report in Winforms

  I am using Visual Studio 2008 and all the components that come with it as well as Infragisitics for Winforms. I need to design a label that will print to a label printer. None of the controls are databound and will most likely be set in code eg/Label.Text = "My Heading"; as there will be minimal information on the label. One piece of information is a barcode so I need the functionality to do that, I assume I can just set the font of the label to barcode and it will do its thing. Can I just add a Crystal Report to a form design it, set the label text properties in code, tell it what printer to print to and then call report.Print(); I've had a quick go and seems not as easy as I thought.   I just did a fresh installation of Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate and ReSharper 5. But now ran into the following situation; return View("~/Plugin/Plugin.Product.dll/Plugin.Product.Views.CreateProduct.ascx"); From a controller i'm returning a view a shown above. ReSharper 5 is trying to resolve this view, but can't find it. Which is explainable in my situation. What i want is to disable the option for ReSharper to try and resolve the views. The Foo() method has 3 uncovered blocks and 5 covered blocks. The closing curly brackets (}) are marked in orange - partially covered. I have no idea why is it partially covered instead of fully covered, and this is my question.

• File.Exists() returns false, but not in debug

  I'm being completely confused here folks, My code throws an exception because File.Exists() returns false public override sealed TCargo ReadFile(string fileName) { if (!File.Exists(fileName)) { throw new ArgumentException("Provided file name does not exist", "fileName"); } Visual studio breaks at the throw statement, and I immediately check the value of File.Exists(fileName) in the immediate window. It returns true. When I drag the breakpoint back up to the if statement and execute it again, it throws again. fileName is an absolute path to a file. I'm not creating the file, nor writing to it (it's there all along). If I paste the path into the open dialog in Notepad, it reads the file without problems. The code is executing in a background worker. It's the only complicating factor I can think of. I am positive the file has not been opened already, either in the worker thread or elsewhere. What's going on here?

  I've inherited some C# code that contains about a thousand lines of source that I need to modify, transforming it from this: newDataRow["to_dir"] = comboBox108.Text; To this: assetAttributes.Add("to_dir", comboBox108.Text); The lines occur in various places throughout the application in groups of 40 or 50. Modifying each line by hand in Visual Studio 2008 can be done but it's labor intensive and prone to errors. Is there a Windows utility out there that will let me cut and paste groups of code into it and then run some sort of reg-ex expression to transform the individual lines one-by-one? I'd also be willing to use some sort of VS 2008 add-in that performed the same set of reg-ex operations against a selection of code. Thanks in advance.

• Connect to Oracle 11g using VS2010.net Drivers/Cleints

  Hey all i am trying to redistribute my app that uses Oracle 11g: Imports Oracle.DataAccess.Client The problem i am having is that it will not run on a machine that doesnt seem to have the correct drivers that its looking for. When i install ODAC 11.2 Release 3 (11.2.0.2.1) with Oracle Developer Tools for Visual Studio on the test VM it works just fine but thats a 230+mb file to download and install! Not to mention that if the user already has Oracle 10/11g on their machine that it may mess up their current connections/etc by installing that setup file. Is there another setup package that i can install that only has the Oracle Data Provider for .NET 2.0 11.2.0.2.0 or whatever its needing from that ODAC 11.2 Release 3 file. So any help about what i need to go about fixing this problem would be great! :) Thanks, David

  Hi, One of our client has an old winform application that contains forms with a lot of controls on them. Some of those controls have a deep hierarchy and that make it to hard to select them in the designer. I would need to understand this hierarchy to make modification and correct some bugs, is there a tools, plugin or something to be able to clearly see this hierarchy ? Something like in the aspx source when you have a breadcrumb of where you are in the HTML hierarchy (HTML Body div etc ...) or something more visual maybe ? Any ideas ? PS : we use Visual Studio 2008, .NET 2.0

  Hi, due to testing and time measuring i have to write some kind of log into existing c# winforms code in Visual Studio 2010. I want to hold the changes and the work very small so my question is about replacing text in my call by counting numbers. Lets say i want to past a line like Log.WriteLine(position) many times in the code and then replace "position" with numbers starting from 1 to n in on turn. • Is it possible to manipulate the format on a DataGridView that is bound to a Data Source?

  I´m using SQL Server 2005 and Visual Studio 2008, C#. In the data source (the SQL Server data table) I use the date format mm/dd/yyyy, however, in a forms overview (DataGridView) users would like to see a completely other format, with year, week number and day number of week (yyww,d). I´ve created an algorithm for this transformation, but can I populate the affected cells with yyww,d instead of mm/dd/yyyy? And in that case - how would I do it? I guess I need to do it after the cells are populated, but before they are shown. The generic question is - how do I manipulate the format of Data Source bound DataGridView cells.

• Undocumented overload of string.Split() ?

  According to both Intellisense and MSDN doc on string.Split, there are no parameterless overloads of string.Split. Yet if I type in string[] foo = bar.Split(); It compiles. And it works. I have verified this in both Visual Studio 2008 and 2010. In both cases intellisense does not show the parameterless overload. Is there a reason for this? Are there any other missing overloads from the MSDN/Intellisense docs? Usually browsing through overloads in intellisense is how I best determine which overload to use. I'd hate to think I am missing other available options throughout the .Net framework.

  hi all I just got finished making my first project in visual studio 2008. what I want to do is put it on a CD and let another person run it. I went to the clean and build and publish and all went well. When I took it to my friends house to put it on her computer..i never got a "download" and "install" screen. We were able to see it and use it on her computer (which is good cuz she doesnt have Visual on her machine) but I wanted her to be able to use it without keeping the CD in the drive. Is there some setup or something I have to do to make my program download and install? The whole shibang was all done with starting a new windows application..and then just adding windows forms to the original. Thanks :)

  I recently switched to Linux and wanted to compile my Visual Studio 2010 C++ source code, which uses only the STL, on G++. My Linux machine currently isn't available but I can try to tell you what is going on, first: As I try to compile my project, all global variables I use in main and which perfectly work on MSVC result in myGlobalVar is not defined in this scope errors.   Hello, Using Visual Studio 2010 10.0.20319.1 RTMRel and SQL Server Express 10.50.1600.1 I'm trying to add a new SQL Server Database .mdf, however, I receive the following error: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 25 – Connection string is not valid) I have enabled TCP/IP and Named Pipelines, added Firewall Exceptions for Sql Server, I am successfully connecting from VS in the Server Explorer window. I would appreciate if someone can pint me to a solution to my problem. Thank you.
