  • EntityFramework 4.0: can you return different types depending on data in the database?

    I have a Media table in the database. I also have an IMedia interface. I have two different media types that implements the same interface: 1) AudioMedia 2) PictureMedia What I wonder here, is if I can use EntityFramework (I'm using an EDMX file but I have my models in a separate library, with automatic code generation turned off), and depending on the data in the database, select what type to get (AutioMedia or PictureMedia). Since they are both implementing the same interface (could be changed to an abstract class if needed I suppose), I'm thinking that somewhere along the way you could specify what class it should be. I should perhaps point out that I have a class that inherits from ObjectContext to access the objects. Perhaps there is something that that can be done?

  • Is it possible to exclude folders from a web application project in vs 2010?

    I had previously asked this question. At the time I was working with VS 2008. To restate the question. I have a web application that generates 1000's of small xml files in a certain directory. I would like to exclude this directory from the web application project in visual studio 2010. With vs 2008 it was not possible. Has anything changed? Besides the general wait for VS to iterate through this directory and add an item in the solution explorer for each file, it also strains my system resources, so I would like to exclude it from the project, but the dir and files need to physically exist on disk, because they are part of the application.     The definition for make_pair in the MSVC++ "utility" header is: template<class _Ty1, class _Ty2> inline pair<_Ty1, _Ty2> make_pair(_Ty1 _Val1, _Ty2 _Val2) { // return pair composed from arguments return (pair<_Ty1, _Ty2>(_Val1, _Val2)); } I use make_pair all the time though without putting the argument types in angle brackets: map<string,int> theMap ; theMap.insert( make_pair( "string", 5 ) ) ; Shouldn't I have to tell make_pair that the first argument is std::string and not char* ? How does it know?

    I'm using a standard Windows FileDialog to allow the user to select some files. I'd like to filter out only the file types I'm interested in though (lets call them *.a and *.b). Is there any way to do this without using *.*? I've tried the following but it fails to match any files at all: this->openFileDialog1->DefaultExt = L"*.a,*.b"; this->openFileDialog1->FileName = L"openFileDialog1"; this->openFileDialog1->Filter = L"My Data Files (*.a,*.b)|*.a,*.b";

    Hi, I am a computer science student and I am going to work on an artificial intelligence project which will compose a musical tune according to the genre and mood inputs. Are the algorithms to be used for this project likely to be very resource-consuming? Would it make any difference (in terms of speed) if I choose to go with Java rather than C++?   • How to set AssemblyInfo.cs based on the tfs project build number?

    The project is hosted on a tfs server and I need to access the build number which I assume is automatically generated when ever you build a project. I need to retrieve that build number and display it on the web pages so that QAs and testing people know exactly which build they are working on. I found how to create customize build numbers in the following link: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa395241(v=vs.100).aspx but it dose not solve my problem as I do not have access to the build definition file. I am looking for some kind of post deployment task which can access the build number or may be generate one and probably write it down to a file, from where I can read it. I don't know if that makes any sense as this is my first time working on .Net

  • Do I put ninject in my project that contains my service layer as well?

    Hi I have 3 project files(webui,framework that contains service layers and repos and unit tests). Most of my unit testing will be done in the service layer as this will contain all the business logic. So I will be mocking out the repo. In some cases I will query my a repo from my controller(say I just need all users in the database and I am not doing any business logic for it). So I am thinking that I need to have ninject used in my framework project. Where is the best place to put it so I can use them against my repos in my service layers?

  • Will having 2 MX records pointing to different mail server types cause delivery issues?

    I've inherited a setup where the mail server is exchange 2010. For some reason, I'm not sure why there is 2 MX records setup. One being the exchange server which is the higher priority while the external (non-exchange) server is the secondary mx record. I don't believe this was done for redundancy reasons as the other mail server is not set to route mail back to the exchange server (it's just the webhosts email for their hosting) The client has been experiencing disappearing email, however after my investigations its not actually disappearing, but exchange is successfully receiving the mail and then passing it on to the external server. It isn't happening all the time, just with some email messages from some domains. My question: Is exchange passing the mail on because it can see the secondary MX record and is configured (somewhere) to send mail out? If so, how do I stop it? Is it as easy as just removing the second MX record pointing to the external mail server and exchange will stop passing mail on? I'm not exchange expert so I'm kinda stumped. Exchange MX tools are saying everything is setup and configured correctly from an external point of view.

Right now I have them separated on two different machines, but I'd like to consolidate them. Is this generally a bad idea? I see the security concern where if the firewall or host OS is compromised, then your data is essentially screwed. But is it really a concern for me?

    Adobe Flash Player checks for updates at startup. If updates are required the Adobe dialog pops up with a [Download] button. Usually when I hit the [Download] button it downloads it straight away with a progress bar that zips across the dialog. I then get the option to install it. All good. However, sometimes when I hit the [Download] button it takes me to the website: https://get3.adobe.com/flashplayer/update/plugin/ Which presents me with an [Update now] button (and to install McAfee!). What is this for? Why didn't it download and install in the "usual" way? So, why are there apparently two different update methods for what appears to be the same thing? One is nice and swish and integrated into the updater, the other more long winded. In fact, I don't [Update now] when it takes me to the website, because I'm like "Hey, what's this?!"

I thought about writing a shell script that would modify the CFBundleDocumentTypes arrays in Info.plist files.   • Why can't I debug my ASP project through a remote desktop connection?

    I just asked this question in Stack Overflow but I figured this stack exchange forum is a better fit. It's been about a month of trying to figure out this problem and we've still not found a solution. We have about seven virtual machines on a server running Windows XP Professional w/ SP 3 all with Visual Studio Interdev and IIS 5.1 installed. Running the programs all work fine, but we just can't debug through remote desktop. When we are logged into the server console (through VM Sphere) and log into one of the virtual machines through there, we are able to debug properly. We figured the issue lies with some kind of permissions for Remote Desktop Users. We've tried nearly every article on the internet (exaggerating of course) and are about to give up hope. One more thing, when we are logged into the virtual machine through the server console and then remote in, the user that was logged into the console is kicked off but debugging works! Does remoting in trick the computer into giving us the correct permissions? I'm really not sure how it works. I know that this technology predates human history, but we are in the process of migrating from ASP Classic to ASP.NET Specs: - Windows XP Professional W/ SP3 - IIS 5.1 - Visual Studio 6 Interdev EDIT: By "debug" I mean running the project with breakpoints. Interdev doesn't stop at breakpoints.

If I were to copy the table of contents, then paste it (without Ditto) to the word processor, I get http://i.imgur.com/V1GU3.png, and the formatting is maintained. As as a result of the copy operation, the table of contents also goes into the Saved Items List (= History List = Lists the Clips saved from the Clipboard) in Ditto’s Main Window: I open a blank document to paste from Ditto instead of the default clipboard, and press either Ctrl-`, the default Ditto window activation Global Hot Key, or click the tray icon. From this point, I can do 3 things to close the Ditto window, and place the item on the clipboard (the default clipboard?). Select the item, and press Enter Put the cursor on the item, and double-click Select the item, and press Ctrl-c 1) and 2) send a right-click where the cursor is, after the Ditto window closes (presumably to have the paste option ready to access?): Ctrl-c just closes the Ditto window.   • Modifying value of "Rating" column within Explorer for arbitrary file types.

    Basically, I have a large body of assorted media (text, images, flash files, archives, folders, etc...) and I'm attempting to organize it. Windows Explorer has a rating column, but there seems to be no way to modify the rating of the files short of opening them in their type-specific software (e.g. Media player, or Photo viewer). However, this does not work when the file is of an unsupported type (.rar, .swf ...), or a directory. I'd be more than willing to consider a file-manager replacement (I've alreadly looked at quite a few, Directory Opus, Total Commander, etc...), or even a solution that stores the rating metadata in a hidden file in each folder, or a separate database. The one real critical requirement is the ability to sort by rating, and being filetype-agnostic. Basically, is there any way to categorize a large collection of assorted files by rating that will work with any file type, including directories? - Ideally, there would be an easy way to add arbitrary columns to windows explorer, and edit them directly. However, there seems to be no way to do this. The rating column is the next best thing.

  • Can I mix drive types in an HP server?

    I currently have the following setup: HP DL380 G4 Server 6 x 73GB, Ultra160, 10k, SCSI 80 Pin Drives Smart Array 6i Controller RAID 5 One of the drives is failing and needs to be replaced. I have on hand drives that are the same size and type, but are Ultra320, 15k instead. I have verified that these drives work in another system with the same type of drive controller. When I plug one of these in the system simply reports the drive as being offline and has nothing further to do with it. From what I have read these drives should be compatable. Should this work at all and if so, what might be preventing it?

  • How to create a container that holds different types of function pointers in C++?

    I'm doing a linear genetic programming project, where programs are bred and evolved by means of natural evolution mechanisms. Their "DNA" is basically a container (I've used arrays and vectors successfully) which contain function pointers to a set of functions available. Now, for simple problems, such as mathematical problems, I could use one type-defined function pointer which could point to functions that all return a double and all take as parameters two doubles. Unfortunately this is not very practical. I need to be able to have a container which can have different sorts of function pointers, say a function pointer to a function which takes no arguments, or a function which takes one argument, or a function which returns something, etc (you get the idea)... Is there any way to do this using any kind of container ? Could I do that using a container which contains polymorphic classes, which in their turn have various kinds of function pointers? I hope someone can direct me towards a solution because redesigning everything I've done so far is going to be painful.

  • Several different project types in solution use same class. Where can I place this class?

    I have one solution with 3 related projects: 1) a Windows console app that reads data and stores it to a mssql DB, 2) WCF service that will retrieve from mssql data, 3) website that will read from the WCF. There could be other projects in the future. The first two projects (and any related future projects) use a Sqlhelper class. Should I create a separate project for it? The most ideal one would be a class library, but I don't know if a WCF invoking a DLL is correct. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

  • How to handle payment types with varying properties in the most elegant way.

    I'm using ASP.NET MVC 2. Keeping it simple, I have three payment types: credit card, e-check, or "bill me later". I want to: choose one payment type display some fields for one payment type in my view run some logic using those fields (specific to the type) display a confirmation view run some more logic using those fields (specific to the type) display a receipt view Each payment type has fields specific to the type... maybe 2 fields, maybe more. For now, I know how many and what fields, but more could be added. I believe the best thing for my views is to have a partial view per payment type to handle the different fields and let the controller decide which partial to render (if you have a better option, I'm open). My real problem comes from the logic that happens in the controller between views. Each payment type has a variable number of fields. I'd like to keep everything strongly typed, but it feels like some sort of dictionary is the only option. Add to that specific logic that runs depending on the payment type. In an effort to keep things strongly typed, I've created a class for each payment type. No interface or inherited type since the fields are different per payment type. Then, I've got a Submit() method for each payment type. Then, while the controller is deciding which partial view to display, it also assigns the target of the submit action. This is not elegant solution and feels very wrong. I'm reaching out for a hand. How would you do this?
