• How to enable a symlink in this case

  I cannot categorize this question under ubuntu since it has nothing to do with it. But I know people here can definitely answer this. I login to one of my deployment boxes using SSH (no ubuntu here). I am working in a tool called TeamCity which uses a folder called ".BuildServer" under home directory of the user. This folder may grow in size as the application runs but the current user is only given a limited amount of space. But the good thing this I got a folder access outside /home/deploy (deploy being the user here) folder. I now want to link this .BuildServer inside the /home/deploy directory to the other folder where I got permission for (meaning all the files should be re-routed to that directory) Hope my question was clear, please help.

• Program/Wrapper (how do you call it) to automate a certain script

  In this question a script is provided, that minimizes all the other windows except the active one. But the thing is, to trigger this script a (shortcut) key-combination has to be pressed. I would love it, if it would be possible to automate this behavior, i.e. no matter what I do, only the active window is not minimized. This way I cannot view more then one open window at the same tine, which is what I'm after. Is it possible to write a script, that does this ? I a question I asked a while ago (where I learned about the above script), someone said, the proper way to do this, would be through a wrapper through which every program starts. I would also be very happy with a more sloppy solution, like activating this script 100 times per second (simulating pressing the shortcut combination a 100 times per second), if it is feasible - although I was warned, that that may not be a very good idea.

This actions drop down I would like to have an action to 'Enable Editing'. Upon clicking to enable editing, I would like a PHP variable modified from 'EnableEditing = false' to 'EnableEditing = true'. Why I would like to use PHP maybe questionable, here is why I would like to use PHP under my understanding to clarify; Sections on my page will show to different administrators depending on their level. Upon enabling editing mode, certain contents will then dynamically. <?php if ($_SESSION['user_level_status'] < 2) { if ($editing = enabled) { show this } else { show this } } ?> Something similar to this, I'm new at PHP so this may look incorrect. • Is it possible to modify a video codec + distribute it?

  this is my first question on this particular stackexchange node, not sure if it's the most appropriate place for this question (if not, guidance to the appropriate node would be appreciated). the abstract: I'm interested in modifying existing video codecs and distributing my modded codecs in such a way as to make them easily added to a users codec library... for example to be added to their mpeg streamclip, ffmpeg etc. some details: I've had some experience modifying codecs by hacking ffmpeg source files and compiling my hacked code (so that for ex: my version of ffmpeg has a very different h.263 than yours). I'm interested now in taking these modified codecs and somehow making them easily distributable, so others could "add them" to their "libraries." Also, I realize there are some tricky rights/patent issues here, this is in part my motivation. • How to create a bookmark under "computer" in the Sidebar of the nautilus file manager in 12.04?

  Somehow, I removed the Downloads bookmark in the Sidebar under "Computer". Is there any way I can make a new one? Possibly with the same icon? I still have my Downloads directory. I just don't have the bookmark under "Computer" anymore, and it has the ordinary folder icon. I know it's not the most significant question, but it's a question nonetheless. Also, I'm not sure, but it may be important to note that I'm using unity 2d.

  Hi Guys, I am not sure if this is correct place to ask this question. My apologies if it is not. I need to create a web app where people will sign up, call it main-app.com, when they sign up my code will generate a usersite.my-app.com, they will login and only be able to manage their mini site. My question is, is it correct to model this out by creating a table for site, a table for user, users belong to site and site has many users. Then I should create a content table that belongs to user AND site? is that right? Thanks Jeff

  I have trouble while detecting collisions on my 3D-Game. I have set-up Rays, to detect collisions (Screenshot) and my main-rountine already analyzes them. But now there's the question what to do with that. One possibility would be, to move the player back to the last position, but that's dirty, and does not work if the player can walk in multiple directions (e.g. if the player runs along a wall). My question is, what to do with the collision data / or in which direction, by which amount move the player? I'm sure there is an algorithm for that (as for almost all is).

• Is there a way to force lubuntu screen resolution?

  I have a Dell Inspiron 4000, 900 Mhz Pentium III, 192 MB RAM,10.1 GB disk running Lubuntu 12.04. When I start the computer, and I check the display resolution, Monitor Settings claims that the max resolution is 1024x768. I then connected another monitor I had lying around, rebooted, and now the laptop monitor looks normal,and monitor settings claims that 1280x1024 is the max resolution (it is) and the other monitor doesn't turn on. (black screen) The external monitor is not broken. Is there a way to, without the external monitor, force the laptop monitor resolution to 1280x1024? (The following is another question) - How can you run commands automatically at startup? Specifically "xinput 18 118 0" (without quotes) The first question is important, I can live with typing the second one at every boot. Thanks

  Have this question from interview: Web Service function given x static HashMap map (singleton created) if (!map.containsKey(x)) { perform some function to retrieve result y map.put(x, y); } return y; The interviewer asked general question such as what is wrong with this distributed cache implementation. Then asked how to improve on it, due to distributed servers will have different cached key pairs in the map. There are simple mistakes to be pointed out about synchronization and key object, but what really startled me was that this guy thinks that moving to database implementation solves the problem that different servers will have different map content, i.e., the situation when value x is not on server A but on server B, therefore redundant data has to be retrieved in server A. Does his thinking make any sense? (As I understand this is the basic cons for distributed cache against database model, seems he does not understand it at all) What is the typical solution for the cache growth issue (weak reference?) and sync issue (do not know which server has the key already cached - use load balancing)?   I come from a background with heavy use of the classical object-oriented paradigm for software development. The company I am a part of switched to Unity not too long ago, and we're all very excited to get started using it However, one aspect that have sparked my interested, and which I think will become a very important part of our future development, is Unity's approach to component-based design with scripting; with less focus on typical hierarchical aspect. Question I was wondering if anyone could recommend any good books on this subject? I have had trouble finding any books or books with reliable reviews, and was wondering if anyone more experienced here had something to say on the issue? Any other kind of resource would be excellent too, I'm just interested in getting to learn everything I can about it. • Is it necessary to understand what's happening at the hardware level to be a good programmer?

  I'm a self-taught programmer, just in case this question is answered in CS 101. I've learned and used lots of languages, mostly for my own personal use, but occasionally for professional stuff. It seems that I'm always running into the same wall when I run into trouble programming. For example, I just asked a question on another forum about how to handle a pointer-to-array that was returned by a function. Initially I'm thinking that I simply don't know the proper technique that the designers of C++ set up to handle the situation. But from the answers and discussions that follow I see that I don't really get what happens when something is 'returned'. How deep a level of understanding of the programming process must a good programmer achieve?

• Installer doesn't recognise windows 7 install

  I will start off saying I searched a bit for this problem with little success. You see, I am an utmost noob when it comes to Ubuntu and Linux based OS (hence why I want to install it and discover it) and the thread I found were too specific for me to do anything with. Therefore, if you find a thread that is noob-friendly and answers my question, please link it below or please try to answer as simply as possible :) The problem: I want to install Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64 bit alongside Windows 7 on my main hard drive (to get the choice which one to start when booting). Pop the CD in, reboot and get to the installer screen. I know I'm supposed to have 3 options, but I'm only given the option to erase my hard drive or "do something else". Therefore, my question is: how do I make Ubuntu recognise Windows 7, so it may install alongside it?

A WebApp or a GUI app will help. It needs to work on 12.04 or newer. Just to give an idea, I am looking for something similar to NetLimiter that gives me the control to know: How much Download/Upload speed an IP/Mac has (Assuming this is a LAN) Limit the Download/Upload speed for an IP/Mac.   I might have been experimenting with my website too much and Google first cut the flow of visitors considerably and now I didn't get one for 4 days already. It's a joke that they've done this, because I've put a lot of work into it, but that's a topic for another day. My question is about further avoiding it. I want to take the partly improved design from that website onto a new one and get a new domain name. The question is: in that case, do I have to change the hosting option (it has my old website name in the address), or is changing the domain enough for Google to treat it as something new from a "fresh user". In other words, does Google get through the domain address and log into the actual hosting address? I'd hate to waste another few months of hard work, so I prefer to take every possible precaution but not paying for another hosting would make things easier on the wallet.

The site has a Homepage, a Store page (where all accessories are displayed), a page for each of the accessories description, an about page and a contact page. There is also a whole set up for shopping cart and checkout (irrelevant to this question). My issue is the SEO. Where can I put the keywords? The home page has only the menu and some photos. The store page displays the items and its titles. Then the specific item's page has a description of the item (pulled from the database), category and price. However, I feel like this is not enough for SEO for google ranking. Where could I add tags in this type of site?

  For a website, you need to have an idea, you need to have a design and you need to have data, events and output, right? Whether it be a blog, web app, Q&A site, search engine... Anyway, that is only slightly related to my question. My question is, when designing a website, providing I know the purpose, what should I start with? Should I start with the CSS, design and look&feel using dummy data first, or should I program in the logic, events and output, and style it later? What is the design process of most websites that are built from the ground up?
