• Connect to development server via switch?

  I apologize upfront if this isn't appropriate for superuser. I asked it on serverfault and was told it was too general for that site. I have a laptop with Vista and it receives it's internet connection wireless. I have an old desktop with Ubuntu 10.04 Server Edition installed and it is setup as a development server with Apache, MySQL, and PHP. This works well, with the server having a static IP address. The server is connected to the router via an Ethernet cable. Is it possible to disconnect the cable that is currently connecting the server and the router, then connect the server and workstation to a switch, so that I am still able to connect to the server via web browser from the workstation? I am trying to eliminate the long ethernet cable connecting the server to the router in the other room. I already have a switch, that is why I asked specifically about it.   I just installed Windows 7 recently, and I expect that it would alter GRUB and it did. I've been following some guides around and I am always stuck at GRUB not able to detect the usual RAID content. (Software RAID 0) I've tried running: sudo grub > root (hd0,0) GRUB complains it couldn't find my hard disk. So I tried: find (hd0,0) And it complains that it couldn't find anything. So I tried: find /boot/grub/stage1 It said "file not found". So what now? How can we make GRUB see RAID 0 under Ubuntu 10.10 LiveCD?

• Simulate analogue steering wheel input from third party software like xPadder

  So. I currently have a steering wheel connected to my htpc. Since it wont work / get recognized by all games i play. I use xpadder to play for example Grid 3. As far as i have understood, it simply presses the associated arrow key when i turn the wheel. What i would like, is a software to simulate more and more frequent key presses of the arrow keys the more i turn the wheel. Example: Tilting a little - 100 presses / second Tilting more - 200 presses / second Tilting max - Hold down key Because what i currently do with the wheel is constantly shaking it a bit right, when i just want to turn a little bit right and so on. • Good quality voice communication software over Internet for windows

  I regularly attend over-the-phone meetings, where is a polycom/polispan device on the other side. The quality of the sound is bad, even those whose English is a first language sometimes are struggling to realize what is being said on the other side. I understand this is because of too aggressive audio compression in the line. Does anyone know any good audio chat software which does not over-compress audio stream. The IP channel between two offices is wide enough. In other words, you should be able to listen to a music (not only a speech) from the remote side with good quality. So, Skype is too over-compressing as well. Does anyone know anything like that?

  Hi, As a computer technician I have to reinstall systems allmost daily (when it can't be repaired ;-)) My problem is that I recover user files by hand and a external mounting device. Most of the time it works fine, but also weekly I have systems with passwords and personal files which are often not sucessfull recovered. I know you can change owner, but when people have 30 GB's af data, my backup computer works for ages to change the rights. Can anyone think of software (commercial is no problem) which does the following: * backup user data without having user rights troubles * have a option to choose what to backup (email accounts, documents, etc, etc) even when it's externaly mounted, in short, it reconizes the folder structure) * Works on different OS's like XP, Vista, W7

  The alt text to today's comic at xkcd.com (strip below) says: After years of trying, I broke this habit in a day by decoupling the action and the neurological reward. I set up a simple 30-second delay I had to wait through, in which I couldn't do anything else, before any new page or chat client would load (and only allowed one to run at once). The urge to check all those sites magically vanished--and my 'productive' computer use was unaffected. (bold is my emphasis) Does anybody know of a browser extension or other software that will add this sort of delay? I've seen extensions which simply block sites, but not a delay like this.

  My university bought new big led display from chinese manufacturers. What I want to do is, show some visualizations (like Windows Media Player, Winamp, Itunes ... does) with music. I'd just drag the application window to show on screen But main problem is,The software that controls it (called "Led Vision") doesn't support showing applications' windows: It shows limited types of the files, such as, powerpoint presentation, video files, picture files.. etc. Now the question is, where I can find the visualization video files? something that created in After Effects, looks like that:

  I tried to put everything in the title : I'm looking for a software that is able : to work with image (raw file), partition & whole disk, without distinction to copy whole image or only selected part (let's say .. from 0 to end of last partition, excluding free space for example ; or with start + offset/end system) to handle compression (at least gzip) You recognized, I'm looking for a "dd | gzip" utility with GUI on Windows. The closest tool I found so far is http://www.dubaron.com/diskimage/ but it's a bit old and don't have compression support. Any idea ?

• Windows Phone 8 not interfacing with Zune software

  I just got a Lumia 521 with Windows Phone 8 and am trying to get the device to work with the Zune software on my PC. I still have my Windows Phone 7 device, and the new one is not working the same way. When I plug the WP7 device into the PC's USB port, it automatically fires up Zune and I can sync my podcasts and music etc to the device. But when I plug the Lumia into the PC it doesn't fire up Zune, and if I start Zune manually, it doesn't interface with the phone at all. Perhaps I am missing something and WP8 isn't supposed to use Zune to interface with the phone?

  Hello! Sometimes I want to watch a movie with friends... them not always being near me makes it hard to do this. Usually everyone will either rent the dvd or get a copy online mostly as .avi files. Usually we all have chat windows open and when one has to pause to get a drink or because of some other reason it is VERY hard to resync. Is there software to handle this?   I am looking for an imaging software, that one can boot from CD or usb stick (therefore without installing anything on the system!) and then control by some kind of remote desktop. So something like a combination of Acronis TrueImage's Bootable Media and Windows Remote Desktop. I don't even need to be able to store the backup on a network drive, as an external usb hdd is attached for these purposes. Background: A system that is normally controlled by SSH / command line and therefore has no keyboard/mouse connected that I could use to control Acronis TrueImage.

  I am trying to set up software raid on a win2008 R2 server core. I have the disks configured as dynamic. In the server manager gui, i can see the disks, but when i right click, the option to set up "new mirrored volume" is not listed. I tried it with the command line using diskpart, and it gives the error "Virtual Disk Service Error: The size of the extent is less than the minimum." The drive are a new pair of 1Tb disks. Is this not supported in server core, or am i missing something else? Thank you

• Software for printing small photos on larger paper with easy layout snapping

  Have some photos and pictures to print (graphs, but that doesn't matter here). So far when printing I inserted them in MS Word, played with layout on the paper, and after half a day, finally managed to get it just right. Usually then, the power runs out :-) Anyways, does anyone know of any software which enables me to easily put up some kind of a layout (one under the other, or some rectangular grid) where I can just "snap" photos next to each other, before printing the whole thing. I know I can do that in pretty much any photo editing program, but the problem is that that pixel hunting takes time ... and is generally a very annoying process, expecially when you don't want to edit the photos in mind, just print them out. Anyways, I'm sure you get the general idea ... Suggestions ?

  I'm having trouble with my wifi connection. Is there any software out there that can help me determine if the problem is in the drivers or in the hardware? Regretfully, I'm working on Vista Edit: The problem I'm having is that the Vista reports that the wireless radio is connected, shows an IP and all, the router also shows that the computer is connected, but there's no connectivity. I can't logon to the router, and I can't even ping it. When I ping it I get the response: General Failure I have tried connecting with and without various wireless security protocols. I have tried disabling the wireless adapter and re-enabling it from the Device Manager I have tried updating the driver None of this has helped. When I connect via Ethernet (with a cable, that is), everything works fine. Edit: I'm not using any firewall on the computer, that I'm aware of. The IP address for the WIFI adapter is similar to the one for the LAN adapter. They differ by one.

  I temporarily installed an old Creative Audigy 2 soundboard on my Vista x64 Home Premium computer. Bad idea! I uninstalled the board & all software visible on the control panel. Now, with one particular app. (Sibelius) I keep getting a start-up message "CTASIO Warning: Creative ASIO: there are no Creative audio products installed on the system that support ASIO". I offer this as a candidate for "Most useless message", but that's beside the point. I used a commercial registry cleaner (PC-Tools Registry Mechanic) and then edited the registry looking for "creative", "audigy" and "ASIO". After removing everything I could find, I still get the message. Any suggestions?

The server send to client 3KB of data, instead of traditional HTTP or SOCKS proxy, the server open multithreaded transfer with 3 connections, send 1KB of data per thread to each connection The client receives 1KBx3, and combine them to the original 3KB data, and return as a local HTTP proxy server. The client display the original data in browser via the local HTTP proxy The latency is not important as long as the transfer rate is good. Does any software like this exist? It's better if it's open source or free ones.

  Hello :) A few years ago I spent an insane amount of time using the excellent Tag&Rename program. However, I find that for random, inexplicable reasons, some music tools simply disregard my tags, and drop or destroy the album art, or have strange handling around some characters. For example, "AC/DC" is poorly handled by most music players when I use Tag&Rename to write the tags. Is there a piece of software that works like Tag&Rename but is more compatible, or is there a way to ensure Tag&Rename writes more compatible tags?

  I'm studying Japanese and need to write a lot of text with furigana. I've been using Word so far but my main concern is that entering furigana is not only quite clumsy (no hotkey) but what's more important is that once entered, you can't globally change either its font or its size; you need to change them one by one. This is a deal-breaker for me since my average text contains hundreds of entries. There is a hack you can do as pointed out by another guy on SU but I found that by using it I could (and did) break my document easily. My question is: is there a software that is specifically designed to work with Japanese text that also has its UI in English? As stated above, I need something that has furigana editing as a first-class citizen.

• Unable to install IIS - Application Development Features - ASP.NET

  If I install IIS with Application Development Features - ASP.NET (or installing IIS first and adding ASP.NET later on). It's giving me the dreaded error: An error has occurred. Not all of the features were successfully changed. I tried uninstalling WAS. I uninstalled and reinstalled .NET 3.5.1. I repaird .NET 4.0 If I install IIS without that feature, then it would let me. Any suggestions?! Is this the correct place to ask this question?

• Remote Desktop Software - TeamViewer comparison?

  Preliminary Note: After reading what I wrote below, I would like to stress that this ain't a TeamViewer ad. It's just that all other tools that I checkked online seem to miss one feature or the other. :-) OK, so I'm currently trying to get a picture of available solutions for remote desktop software. I have found (through personal usage) that TeamViewer pretty much ticks all boxes that I personally would want from any remoting tool. (Specifically it's setup is amazingly trivial.) It supports a wide range of platforms and it's even free for private use, so I'm really quite OK with it. I would be interested if anyone knows of other tools that ticks as many boxes as TeamViewer seems to do.

• lamp server permissions on development server

  I run a LAMP server on a ubuntu laptop I use only for development. I am not greatly concerned with security, since the server is never accessible outside the local network, and it's turned off when I'm not using it. My question is what is the simplest and 'best' way to set permissions/users/groups so that when my myself user creates, edits or writes files in the webroot, I won't need to go through and CHMOD / CHOWN everything back to the www-data user? Should I add myself to the www-data group? Or chown the webroot to www-data:myself? Or is there a best practice for this situation so I don't have to keep re-setting the ownership of these files?
