• How does RAM fail?

  I have an issue with a Dell Inspiron 15 (1545) laptop that refuses to open any applications (save select Microsoft programs, e.g. Security Essentials, Ctrl Panel, Windows Explorer (not Internet), regedit, Event Viewer, etc.). I've run Microsoft Memory Diagnostics Tool and it found a 'hardware problem was detected.' Does this indicate that the RAM has failed? I notice when I open programs like Word, Excel, Internet Explorer, etc., it always give me an error from WerFault.exe saying The instruction at xxxxxxx referenced memory at xxxxxxxxx. The memory could not be written. and sometimes something about illegal instructions. If it is a hardware problem, does this mean that replacing the RAM is my only option? Again, I would also like to know if RAM can fail (like hard drives) and if malware can cause RAM to fail also.

• Automated git push attempt does not work - authentication issue

  I'm trying to automate a very periodic git add/commit/push cycle using a shell script and cron under OS X 10.8.5. The script is as basic as one would expect it to be: cd /my/directory git add . git commit -m "a commit message with the date" git push -u origin master I've tried running it both as root as well as a non-root user. When I do this manually, I get a dialog box from OS X requesting that I authenticate the operation. Running the script (either using cron or just using sh) ends up sending a message (via mail) to whichever user's cron executed the script saying that it was unable to write a file in the .git directory because of a permissions issue (which is most likely manual execution requires authentication). Is there any way to circumvent this issue, or give the script permission to perform this operation without having me intervene each time?

• "Disk boot failure" error after installing Windows 7 on SSD

  I have a system with 3 SATA drives which runs fine. Got a new SSD drive and wanted to install a fresh Windows-7 on it. So I removed the boot drive and replaced it with the SSD drive. Installed Windows and when it was done, rebooted and now I get "Disk boot failure. Insert system disk and press enter" error message. I reinstall again and still same message. Removed the SSD and put back the original drive and I got the same message!! I checked the BIOS and things look good. Something is wrong. Two questions: 1- Why isn't the new Windows booting from the SSD? 2- Why isn't the machine booting using the previous working configuration anymore, after removing the SSD? I did connect it during the second Windows installation but it was the last drive in the SATA connector. Would Windows installer mess with its MBR sector?

• How to copy directories using debugfs?

  The debugfs manpage gives the impression that the command 'rdump . .' will recursively copy all files found on the specified filesystem from the debugfs cwd to the native filesystem's cwd. Instead I seem to receive a syntax error, and no copy is initiated? These are the commands I run: cd /path/to/transfer/destination debugfs /dev/sda1 -R rdump . . My task is to copy the entire contents of a clean yet unmountable USB storage device to its host machine's HD. The host machine does not support the inode size used by the USB device's filesystem (256) and its software is not upgradeable, so my intention was to use debugfs to transfer the files. If anyone has any other suggestions for this task I'd be grateful.

• kernel: journal commit I/O error

  I am having some problems with a Dell 1950 server. I am installing RHEL 4.6 along with Oracle and some other software on here. I am randomly getting an error message saying "kernel: journal commit I/O error" on my ssh session and on the monitor I have hooked up to the server I see an error scrolling by that says "EXT3-fs error (device sda5) in start_transaction: Journal has aborted." It has happened several times but never at the same point during the install. Actually, this last time the system was up and running and I was just trying to import a database into oracle. This has happened on several hard drives, so I'm pretty sure that is not the problem. This makes me think the raid controller is going bad. What do you guys think? ** UPDATE ** Pretty sure it was a bad hard drive. I threw another drive in the server and it's been running for about 48 hours with out problems.

• How to Automate .inf PnP Windows 7 Drivers with Wildcard?

  I am trying to automate the PnP driver installs for Windows 7 with either of the below batch files via For loop and wildcard for the .inf file. The rundll32 batch reads and echos the correct .inf file but then gives me the "Error Installation failed" and with the pnputil batch it runs without any error put does not install. • Does Windows Virtual PC support virtual applications with an XP Home Edition guest?

  I've installed Windows Virtual PC in Windows 7 and have the XP Mode virtual PC working. I can run virtual applications with it and the integration features all work. I used Disk2VHD to convert my existing XP Home drive into a VHD, so I can use it as a virtual PC, too. It works in general, but it sometimes pops up the "Could not enable integration features" error. I don't see the host computer's drives in the guest, and I don't see the guest's applications in the host's Start menu. Is this just because the guest is XP Home instead of XP Pro? Do I have to reinstall all these apps in the XP Mode VHD in order to get them as virtual apps? Could something else be preventing it from working?

• auto copy newest folders and images in MyPictures folder to USB drive

  I drop lots of photos in a day into the My Documents/My Pictures folder. I archive at the end of each day to USB drives, to be stored offsite. What I would like is someway to automate the process. By example, a small app or script I can simply double-click and it will scan the My Pictures folder for the newest folders and images and copy them to the USB drive until the drive is full. It doesn't matter if I get redundancy from the previous days saved images, so long as the newest images and folders are always the first to get copied. Well, that's my request. Thanks for reading.

• Trackpad and battery on stop working at same time

  Gateway E-475M G Windows 7 Professional SP1 Synaptics TouchPad 15.2.20.0 Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery 6.1.7600.16385 It seems that when my battery stops working correctly, my touchpad will also act erratically. Specifically, the computer will charge for a few seconds, then stop charging for another few seconds. This will continue for some time. But if I close the lid, the charging LED will stay lit. As for the touchpad, it'll click or highlight things at random when I can get it to move. As a test, I stopped charging my computer. Now it seems my touchpad is working fine. I've tried to reinstall both the battery and touchpad drivers. I've also started the computer in safe mode, but that didn't help either. Edit: I've now tried booting my computer with an Ubuntu live cd, and the charging problem persists. So, it now seems my computer can only charge continuously as long as it's turned off or sleeping.

• MediaShield RAID 5 is showing up as 760GB when the actual size is 2.7TB

  I just finished setting up Windows 2003 Server on my new server. And I started setting up a RAID 5 for it. I have 4x1TB Hard Drives. From MediaSheild RAID Utility (at boot time) the RAID size is displayed as 2.7TB. Linux also shows it as 2.7TB. However, in Windows, everything (including Windows Disk Management as well as Windows based MediaShield utility) is reporting only 760Gb. I already tried converting partitioning table to GUID from MBR, because I read somewhere that Windows can only handle up to 2TB MBR tables, that didn't help much. Tried searching for partitioning utilities that I could use, but couldn't find anything free. Formatted the disk as NTFS partition from within Linux, it stop showing in Windows all together, even MediaShield windows utility isn't showing at anymore. Windows is installed on a separate 500Gb hard drive, that's setup not to support RAID. Any ideas?

  I have a lenovo z570, and i installed ubuntu 12.04 alongside with my windows 7. Recently all my games ive been playing, stop responding due to a AppCrash. I searched it on google and they said it had something to do with ubuntu. So i deleted the partition. After restarting my laptop i get the: unknown filesystem grub rescue error. • How to relink user folders in Windows 7

  The short story: Win7 lost track of my user folders location (desktop, my documents, my pictures etc...). They now reside on a different partition. How can I relink these folders? The long story: The way I partition my drives is: C: - SSD drive for Windows and Program Files D: - A large regular hard drive for all my user data The first thing I do after a fresh Win7 install is move my user folders to D:, by right clicking on these folders under C:\users\username\, choosing the Location tab and clicking on Move. I've just completed encryption of D: using TrueCrypt. It shows a lot of warnings before the encryption process, but (hrrmm...) it does not mention the fact that after encryption the data is located on a new drive letter, say E: This broke Win7's links to my special user folders. How can I relink these folders?

• Can I trust that ZFS is consistent between Linux and FreeBSD?

  I'm planning to build a FreeNAS box sometime soon, but if ZFS on Linux eventually proves to be reliable, I might want to switch, just to have a more familiar OS. So I'm wondering if I can trust that the different implementations of ZFS are compatible. In other words, if I just swap out the boot disk from FreeNAS to Linux or OpenIndiana, can I trust that nothing bad will happen to my data? This may seem like a stupid question--obviously it ought to be compatible--but I'm guessing that ZFS isn't commonly used in cases where drives are moved between computers, so I'm hoping someone can provide a better answer than just "it ought to be".

• zip being too nice (osX)

  I use zip to do a regular backup of a local directory onto a remote machine. They don't believe in things like rsync here, so it's the best I can do (?). It never seems to get above 5%. I tried making it nice -20 but that didn't make any difference. Is it just the network or disc speeds bottlenecking the process or am I doing something wrong?

• Windows 7 User / Documents and Settings folders

  Yo, I have a machine - Windows 7, nothing remarkable about the install but i have multiple drives in the machine. I have a c:\users\username folder which seems to be current and is the one that all windows properties point to. However, i also have a f:\documents and settings\username folder (which was hidden) which is also current and up to date. If i edit anything from either, they seem to "replicate" or update each other ie if i rename an icon on my desktop, it renames it in c:\users\username\desktop and f:\documents and settings\username\desktop. Likewise if i edit directly in one of those folders, it does the same to the other. Any one got any ideas what might cause this? Problem i have is that I need to remove the f drive all together! • Recovered all previous data of partition in Windows

  My whole drive data is lost because I installed ubuntu. After that, I formatted my Laptop and make new drives. in which, one partition is cant accessible because its a raw partition. I recovered some data from that partition using iCare Recovery Software. Then, I fully format that partition, and I put data in that place. I remove all files from that. My problem is that I want to recover my data which is deleted because of ubuntu.. I can recover the most recent data from iCare Recovery, but i cannot recover previous data.. • Revert "Deny" permissions in Windows 7

  I made a very dumb mistake and I am hoping there is a way to fix this without having to boot in through a Linux Live CD and extracting the data. My user login to my Windows 7 system is: John John is part of the Administrator's group. I have a folder called "C:\Users\John" I tried to make this folder accessible to ONLY John (and deny from all other Administrators) by going to the Folder, Right Click Secturity tab and then selecting all the checkboxes under "Deny" while having selected the "Administrators" group. As a result, I cannot access this folder from any of the accounts: "John" and "Administrator" as both of them belong to the Administrators groupd and deny permissions out-weigh the "Allow Permissions" Is there any way I could revert this back? • Scripts on UNC paths take very long to run

  I have several scripts in UNC paths (from Windows batch files to PHP scripts). No matter how I run them (double click on explorer, my editor's run command menu or Windows command prompt) they take really long to start running (like 14 seconds). Once they get started they run normally. This doesn't happen if I run them from mapped drives. I'm using Windows XP Professional SP3 inside an Active Directory domain and files are hosted in a Windows Server box (not sure about the version, it's an HP dedicated file server with bundled OS). Why does it happen? Is there a way to speed up things while using UNC paths?

• Invalid BOOT.INI (dual boot XP with 7)

  I had Windows XP x64 as my main system, and i also had a second partition with Windows XP x64. Both booted from first partition (C:) I then installed Windows 7 Ultimate on the first partition. I've added NTLDR using BCDRDIT. I've also copied NTLDR, NTDETECT.COM and BOOT.INI onto the drive where XP remained. However then i try to boot into Windows XP x64 i get Invalid BOOT.INI file Booting from c:\windows\ NTDETECT failed I found instructions on how to fix it using a boot disk, however the partitions are on a software RAID. I've tried to boot from a customized XP CD with the drivers, however it does not offer me a Repair option for some reason - just setup. • 1 TB hdd and no space to create a partition for linux !

  I have a brand new Acer aspire 5811 with core i5 processor and all that. There is windows 7 Home Premium pre-installed on it. I want to install arch and setup a dual boot system. The problem is: Windows shows 4 partitions 14 MB UNKNOWN recovery partition 100MB NTFS System Reserved partition for Windows 7 448GB NTFS Windows 7 system partition 468GB NTFS Data partition for windows 7 But GpartedLive cd and also arch setup show 5 partitions 938Kb UNKOWN system reserved partition 14 MB UNKNOWN recovery partition 100MB NTFS System Reserved partition for Windows 7 448GB NTFS Windows 7 system partition 468GB unusable space Because of this, I cannot create another primary partition. Can any body guide me about how should I go for creating partition for installing arch ? Note: I need to keep windows 7 working. regards.

• Use Internet Explorer 6 and 7 in Virtual Box.

  Hello. I am trying to install the vhds (virtual hard drive image) of IE6 on XP and IE 7 on XP packs available from Microsoft on Virtual Box. Virtual Box will only mount CD/DVD's and/or ISO's. How do I get it to use the Microsoft files? I need this to test web pages in IE6/IE7s. I am running Windows 7 Home Premium. Is there a way to do this, or another way that will allow me to load XP/IE6 and XP/IE7 in Virtualbox Edit: Ok I got it to work but it says XP must be updated in 3 days due to hardware changes. Microsoft said this would be activated til January 1st 2010. Is there a way to bypass that?

  I have a directory structure composed by: iTunes/Music/${author}/${album}/${song.mp3} I implemented a script to strip my mp3 bitrate to 128 kbps using lame (which works on a single file at time). My script looks like this 'normalize_mp3.sh': #!/bin/bash SAVEIFS=$IFS IFS=$(echo -en "\n\b") for f in *.mp3 do lame --cbr $f __out.mp3 mv __out.mp3 $f done IFS=$SAVEIFS This works fine, if I go folder by folder and execute this command. But I'd like to have a "global" command, like in 4DOS so I can run: $ cd iTunes/Music $ global normalize_mp3.sh and the global command would traverse all subdirs and execute the normalize_mp3.sh to strip all my mp3 in all subfolders. Anyone knows if there is a unix equivalent to the 4dos global command? I tried to play with find -exec but I just managed to get an headache.

• Help make sense of a KillDisk error/log

  I have a hard drive that I've been trying to reformat. I tried reformatting it in the windows XP and 7 installers, and in an Ubuntu live cd with gparted. I tried using dd to 'zero' the drive as well with no success. Finally I ran across KillDisk after a search. • Easy Linux distribution with newer packages than Ubuntu?

  I'm a programmer and sysadmin, and I'm looking for a better Linux distro to use than Ubuntu. It certainly is a well-polished, nice distribution to use, but a lot of the programs available in the Ubuntu repositories are very old versions. Installing PPA's or compiling from source just isn't very nice. I'd love to use something like Arch Linux that uses a rolling release cycle, but I really don't want to configure my system from scratch, and support for ATI Catalyst drivers is necessary. I just want to pop the CD in, install and start using my computer - just like with Ubuntu. Additionally, if you know of a package like ubuntu-restricted-extras for the distribution, that'd be nice! What do you suggest?

• Possible to get SSD TRIM (discard) working on ext4 + LVM + software RAID in Linux?

  We use RAID1+0 with md on Linux (currently 2.6.37) to create an md device, then use LVM to provide volume management on top of the device, and then use ext4 as our filesystem on the LVM volume groups. With SSDs as the drives, we'd like to see the TRIM commands propagate through the layers (ext4 - LVM - md - SSD) to the devices. It looks like recent 2.6.3x kernels have had a lot of new SSD-related TRIM support added, including lots more coverage of Device Mapper scenarios, but we still can't seem to get it to cascade down properly. Is this possible yet? If so, how? If not, is any progress being made?
