• Satellite TV on my PC?

  What would be a good solution for hooking up the satellite TV box (Dish network) in my room to be able to watch it on my PC and possibly record video from it? Please share with me the best cards, cables, software, anything else needed to do this in the most efficient way? I am looking at the WinTV-HVR from Hauppauge. I am not sure, for performance, what would be the best to go with, PCI, PCI express, USB2.0? Also on the Hauppauge website I saw this note: "WinTV-PVR products will not work in PC systems with 4GB or more of memory." The new PC I am building will be 12-24gb of DDR3 RAM, does that mean their products will not work at all with my memory? So confused now!

• Mysterious problem...can remotely connect to a system but can't browse back out.

  I have LogMeIn installed on my home system. I went on travel and my wife called saying that none of our home systems could browse the internet. I thought I would try to connect to my home system using logmein. Surprisingly, I was able to connect to my home system and log in without any problems using logmein. When I opened a browser from my home system, I indeed could not browse. I opened a command prompt and tried to ping my router (192.168.1.1) and it failed/timed out. How is this possible? I can remotely connect to my system but once logged in cannot even ping my router. What's up with that?

• VMware ESXi - vSphere - Can't exit VM console access

  I'm running ESXi 4.1 on a Dell T110 Server I connect to ESXi using vSphere vSphere is running inside a Windows 7 VM The Windows 7 VM is running in VMware Fusion on my Mac OS X system When I'm in vSphere and I've selected a VM and I click the console tab on some systems the VM console won't release me when I press the control + command keys. pfSense (FreeBSD) and Ubuntu Server behave like this. I can't exit their console screen. I have to shut down these VM's to be released from their VM console access. Windows, Ubuntu Desktop, etc. all behave like I'd expect; When I press the control + command keys I'm released from the VM console and I'm able to navigate in vSphere. Does anyone know what might be causing this or a way around this? Thanks in advance.

• Run application or script on Windows RDC connection

  I checked this thread, but it did not solve my exact problem. I need to run a script on when a connection is made across my network using windows remote desktop connection. The thread listed above works for the initial login, however, if I don't log out (which is necessary for some processes running on my network), then it wont run the script again the next time someone connects to the system using remote desktop connection. Previously we were using pcAnywhere to achieve this, however after running into some graphical issues with pcAnywhere, we have decided to move away from it to RDC. For a little more information, we need to have an email sent out anytime a connection is made to particular machines. The login name will always be the same for those systems and we do not log off when closing the connection.

• Location of truetype fonts

  I would like to create a small script that installs a few truetype fonts on the user's system. On my Ubuntu machine the truetype fonts are located at /usr/share/fonts/truetype. However, I'm not sure if this location is the same on all machines. Is there a way to find out where truetypes fonts are stored on any Linux system? Update After some research I found that the path usr/share/fonts/truetype is specified in the XML file /etc/fonts/fonts.conf. It's an XML file, so I can use XPath to get the dir: xpath -q -e 'fontconfig/dir[1]/text()[1]' /etc/fonts/fonts.conf I don't know however if this file will exist on all (or most) Linux systems.

• Authenticating Linux users against AD without Likewise Open

  Has anyone got their Linux systems authenticating against Active Directory without using Likewise Open? We are close to implementing Likewise Open, but first we need to rename roughly 70 of 110 Linux servers so that their hostnames are not longer than 15 characters. This is required because Likewise Open actually joins the Linux computer to the domain, and it fails to do so if the hostname is too long due to some legacy NetBIOS naming limitation. Is there a way to authenticate via AD, using only LDAP perhaps? What are the advantages/disadvantages over doing it like that vs just using Likewise?

• Virtualmin Configuration

  I am trying to get Virtualmin setup and have reached a point where my noobish sysadmin skills aren't getting the job done. This is the message I get now when I try and refresh the configuration of Virtualmin. BIND DNS server is installed, and the system is configured to use it. However, the default master DNS server XXXXXX is not a fully qualified domain name. Sendmail is only accepting SMTP connections on the following ports : 127.0.0.1 port smtp. Email from other systems on the Internet will not be accepted. This can be changed in the Sendmail Mail Server module. Please advise what I need to do to get Sendmail configured properly. Thanks!

• How do I mount a harddrive to my /home folder in OS X?

  Im wondering how to mount my second HDD to my /home folder like you do in other *NIX systems, making the mount point just that folder and not a standard HDD. I am aware of the method of copying my /home folder and then telling OSX via System Preferences/Users & Groups to look for the folder in a different location. What I am wondering is if there is a way to properly mount the entire HDD to become nothing more than my /home. I don't want it to even show up in Finder as an HDD. Is this even possible?

• Domain connection shows as "unauthenticated"

  I have seen various different questions for this problem floating around but either the circumstances arent the same or the solution doesnt work so thought i would post it to see if anybody has any suggestions. Various domain PCs and laptops appear to randomly give the connection name of "lewis.local 2(Unauthenticated)" - lewis.local being our domain - and provides an exclamation mark where the network type logo is normally shown. This also appears to happen every time connecting via vpn. Our setup is: 2 servers both running windows server 2003 R2 (x32) main server has AD, DNS and DHCP installed IPv4 on approx 30 client machines (some wired, some wireless) If anybody has any thoughts on solutions i would appreciate it. I have tried removing all but AD server roles, resetting all of the systems and nothing. It doesnt prevent anything from working just like a domain connection most of the time however it is getting fustrating! Also dont know if it could have anything to do with it but the DHCP server seems to have quite a long lead time on issuing the IP address to the client.

  I'm with a small company that plans to sell a rack mounted network appliance which is configurable via a web interface (think of a router configuration page sort of deal), and I'm wondering in large data center like environments what the process usually is for the initial setup of such systems. The main question is, if the system is headless, how do you get initial remote access to it? Do companies usually first plug a server into a monitor/keyboard/mouse in order to configure the network settings before mounting it in a rack? How else would they know what the IP address of the machine was if DHCP (and it can't be hard coded because of IP conflict potential)?

  Hey guys, I am using domdocuments and using things like $div-nodeValue to obtain certain info from a web page. On my ubuntu machine when i do php crawl.php everything is displayed properly in Chinese (the page is in UTF-8). However on my CENTOS machine using the same code I get æ´å¤åå¸ when I print in the terminal. and when I save it to the database, the characters are also messed up. One thing I noticed is that when I do print $content, both systems display them properly.

  I am trying to virtualize an Ubuntu machine using VMWare vCenter Converter, but ran into permissions issues. I followed the instructions of part 1 and 2 on this page but when I got to "For Ubuntu operating systems further configuration is needed" I started running into trouble. I'm decent at Linux, but I'm not an experienced sysadmin. How do I Target the specific user you will be using and assign it user id 0/group 0? How do I Ensure that you also still enable Allow root to ssh even though you are not using the root account? Thanks for your help.

  I would like to understand some fundamental VS version differences, What is the difference between Visual Studio 2008 and Visual Studio 2008 Team System? Does the Team System 2008 include VS2008, TFS 2008 & Team Explorer 2008? Furthermore, what is the difference betwene Team System 2008 and Team Suite 2008? I beleive there are no more Team Suites or Team Systems in 2010? Does Visual Studio Ultimate 2010 include all Team System components, like TFS 2010 & Team Explorer 2010, so in effect it is like an upgrade of Visual Studio 2008 Team System? Or does TFS 2010 & Team Explorer 2010 need to be installed separately?

• XP boot timer=> set, but does nothing?

I haven't made any hardware changes at all. Now, when the system boots it just sits there and waits for me to hit -enter-. I've searched all over for explanations & possible causes, but found nothing which seems to relate. Anyone here have any idea what may have caused the timer to simply quit working like that ? (BTW, the system clock works just as it ever did and keeps time precisely.) Thanks.

• Can I repair a short circuiting problem in a Dell Inspiron 6000 that occurs when it is picked up?

  I have a couple of Dell Inspiron 6000 notebooks that work perfectly fine unless you pick them up by one corner (as most people would). When you lift the notebook it flexes slightly and the notebook shorts out. Sometimes even a gentle bump will cause this to happen. So far the notebook always starts back up without issue, but this behavior is...inconvenient. It occurred to me that someone familiar with the innards might be able to suggest a little MacGyver fix for this. A little electrical tape in the right spot or something like that. Or perhaps this is a common problem and the answer is here, waiting for me to stumble on the correct keywords. I would appreciate any suggestions Note: It is probably worth mentioning that I have disassembled a Dell notebook before to replace a bluetooth card so I comfortable opening up the systems.

  Hi, I'm new to this site but have found the articles and feedback very useful. We have a Server Room which our Organisation owns and controls, yet there are several thirs party companies that have open access to this room. As such, we have been asked to put together a protocol paper that stipulates the standards that we expect to be adhered to when working in this room. Other than the monitoring of UPS loads, Air Cooling functionality, alarm systems etc, does any one have any guidance on the kind of issues that need to be documented to make this protocol all encompassing? I'm thinking along the lines of not leaving cardboard or other combustibles in the room, not having food and drink in the room, not altering the fabric of the building by drilling through walls etc? • Is it possible to create a read-only user account for security auditing purposes?

  An organization requires several administrators to have a role of a security auditor. They must have read-only (via network/remote) access to Windows Server 2008 / R2 systems and have permissions to view the server configuration. They must not be able to make any other changes to the server or the network, like restarting or making any configuration chanages. However I can't find any built-in settings for a user like this. The closest thing is the "Users" user group [1], however from my understanding every user in the domain is in this group and cannot view the domain server's configuration.   I've got an old laptop that is running Windows 2000 & Windows 98 in a multi-boot configuration. I need to add MS-DOS to that list of startup options. I've already added a primary partition, formatted it for FAT16 and made it bootable, and installed MS-DOS 6.22. My question is, how do I add my MS-DOS partition to the list of startup options? More information: My single hard drive has three primary partitions: 0: FAT32 Windows 2000 1: FAT32 Windows 98 2: FAT(16) MS-DOS 6.22 Currently, the boot-up screen lists Windows 2000 and Windows 98 as options, with Windows 2000 as the default choice. • Burned white shadow on 24inch monitor

  So I got this brand new monitor today an noticed the following problem: This happens while I'm moving my browser window for example. It's not font related, it also happens with icons as you can see on the picture. It's only persistend while I'm moving something, the faster I move it, the farther away is the shadow from the origin. I tested it on windows, linux and two different systems with DVI and VGA. Is this a known issue ? • Archiving old, outdated hard drives

  I have a number of old hard drives. I've decided to throw them out. But before I do that, I'd like to keep the contents of hard drives, intact. I tried to use the ISO file format to archive but the major problem is that it loses file attributes and can't create directories with exceeding depth of 8 levels. I do have drives over a variety of file systems; FAT, NTFS, ext2, ext3 and HFS and I'd like to archive them without any loss of information.

• Invalid BOOT.INI (dual boot XP with 7)

  I had Windows XP x64 as my main system, and i also had a second partition with Windows XP x64. Both booted from first partition (C:) I then installed Windows 7 Ultimate on the first partition. I've added NTLDR using BCDRDIT. I've also copied NTLDR, NTDETECT.COM and BOOT.INI onto the drive where XP remained. However then i try to boot into Windows XP x64 i get Invalid BOOT.INI file Booting from c:\windows\ NTDETECT failed I found instructions on how to fix it using a boot disk, however the partitions are on a software RAID. I've tried to boot from a customized XP CD with the drivers, however it does not offer me a Repair option for some reason - just setup. • HTTPS is not working in transparent proxy with Squid

  Hi I am using Squid proxy 3.1, all systems in the LAN connects to the internet through proxy. Direct connection is blocked using the iptables from the gateway server. There are some devices which does not have options for auto proxy or manual proxy and can only connect to the internet directly. So I enabled transparent proxy in Squid and redirected packets for port 80 and 443 to Squid proxy using iptables. Now the problem is it is working fine for HTTP port but HTTPS is not working. It is throwing "ssl_error_rx_record_too_long" error. If it is not possible through transparent proxy can you please suggest me another solution. Warm Regards Supratik

• Access Denied on a Drive where All Users list have been deleted in Security Tab

  Hi All, (System is Windows 7 x64) I wanted to restrict access of other people in a certain drive of my computer (Harddisk 1 is partitioned to C & D; I want to restrict Drive D). What I did was go to the Security Tab (under Drive Properties) and remove the All Users entry. My account is an administrator account. I left only Systems and Administrator on the list. However, when I tried to access drive D, I got an Access Denied error, and Security Tab is already missing. I tried to edit Local Group Policy; it does not work. Take Ownership is not available for the Drive as well, but I see it enabled if I select files / folders. Please help. Thanks. Also, I am wondering why, as an Administrator, have my access to that drive denied.

• How to install compiler and binutils on FreeNAS?

  I'd like to run a backup tool, duplicity, that apparently requires a cc compiler and binutils. I'm able to locate and install the required BSD packages for python, gcc, and dependencies from ftp2.freebsd.org. However, I can't find binutils. How are binutils installed on a system like FreeNAS? I'm working with FreeNAS 0.70 (based on FreeBSD 7.2). I see several packages with binutils in the name, but it's not clear any of them are for my i386 platform. e.g. I see i386-rtems-binutils-2.19.1, but I can't find any info that suggests this is correct for my platform. Google results mention it's for realtime systems.
