  • install make command without already having make (mac os 10.5)

    I'm trying to write a script that uses the make command, but Mac os 10.5 doesn't come with make installed by default, and when you download the make source code from gnu's website, you have to use make itself to compile and install it. which is hard if you don't have it in the first place. How can I install make? (I know you can get make by installing Xcode and the developer tools that come with mac os, but I don't want people to have to go find their mac os install dvds to be able to use the script.) It doesn't even have to be make, i'm just looking for a utility that you can easily download in a script (using ftp or curl) and use to compile source code.

    Hello everyone, I am using scp command to copy file from a MacBook Pro OS X 10.5 to another Linux box (Red Hat Linux Enterprise 5). I am using the following command on Mac, sudo scp ~/.ssh/mykey.rsa [email protected], there is no output from Mac command line. I am not sure whether the scp is success or not.     Hi all, I am on Mac Os X 10.5 (but I reproduced the issue on 10.4) I am trying to use iconv to convert an UTF-8 file to ASCII the utf-8 file contains characters like 'éàç' I want the accented characters to be turned into their closest ascii equivalent so my command is this : iconv -f UTF-8 -t ASCII//TRANSLIT//IGNORE myutf8file.txt which works fine on a Linux machine but on my local Mac Os X I get this for instance : è = 'e à = `a I really dont undersatnd why iconv returns this weird output on mac os x but all is fine on linux any help ? or directions ? thanks in advance

    I was looking at my plugins, and ended up looking at Silverlight on several Mac systems. What I noticed (from Wikipedia), was that only Silverlight 1 runs on PPC. Without knowing about the technical details and trade-offs, I was surprised. On its face, if you build Silverlight 1 for PPC and Intel, would it have been hard to continue to support both chipsets? So, assuming this was a decision based on marketshare, I tried to search for information on the Mac OS PPC vs. Intel marketshare, but could not find anything on point. Does anyone here have an idea what the ratio is? It seems like the most important architectural/product decision you would make for a Mac OS X product.

For example has the Mac in its application menu the preference command, the about command and the exit command. It should somehow be possible because Eclipse itself does it. But I can not figure out how.

    I have a MOSS 07 site that is configured for anonymous access. There is a document library within this site that also has anonymous access enabled. When an anonymous user clicks on a PDF file in this library, he or she can read or download it with no problem. When a user clicks on an Office document, he or she is prompted with a login box. The user can cancel out of this box without entering a log in, and will be taken to the document. This happens in IE but not FireFox.     I'm doing some development with C++ on Mac OS. The code worked fine on Mac OS 10.8.3/10.8.4, with GCC 4.7.3. However recently I upgraded my OS to Mavericks 10.9 and Xcode 5.0. I find that when I try to compile my code, both gcc/g++/clang responds with: *******.C:1:** stdlib.h:no such file or directory *******.C:2:** iostream.h:no such file or directory Since I'm not familiar with Mac OS(My working platform is openSUSE), what can I do for it? will it help if I install "Command Line Tools" from Xcode? Or is there anyway that I could re-build the include index? Include dir of GCC is /opt/local/include/gcc47 and it seems there is a stdlib.h in it. The path is /opt/local/include/gcc47/c++/tr1/ Please help me, and thank you very much.

I have tryide using MacVim with various plugins but i never get it to work and it looks to be a hard learning curve to get starting using vim.     I think (based on searching the forums), that NetCat is the best option, but wanted to hear if others are preferable. Anyone have good success with a packet-crafting tool (specifically on Mac)? I've tried HPing, but had some issues. I'm looking into NetCat ('nc' on mac) now, but it's not working as I had thought. Basically, I captured some packets that a remote control sends over a wifi network to turn lights on and off (using X10 controllers), and am looking for a way to replay them by crafting a TCP packet from the command line. I used Wireshark to sniff the traffic, so I know the package is: DEVICE -sendplc-"C4 DIM 10" I'm trying: echo 'DEVICE -sendplc-"C4 DIM 10"' nc 192.168.2.196 6003 but there's no response from the receiving system.     I have just tried to upload Mac app to app store. But Apple said just error. Invalid Code Signing Entitlements. Your application bundle's signature contains code signing entitlements that are not supported on MAC OS X.   • Can someone confirm how Microsoft Excel 2007 internally represents numbers?

    I know the IEEE 754 floating point standard by heart as I had to learn it for an exam. I know exactly how floating point numbers are used and the problems that they can have. I can manually do any operation on the binary representation of floating point numbers. However, I have not found a single source which unambiguously states that excel uses 64 bit floating point numbers to internally represent every single cell "type" in excel except for text. I have no idea whether some of the types use signed or unsigned integers and some use 64 bit floating point. I have found literally trillions of articles which 1) describe floating point numbers and then 2) talk about being careful with excel because of floating point numbers. I have not found a single statement saying "all types are 64 bit floating point numbers except text". I have not found a single statement which says "changing the type of a cell only changes its visual representation and not its internal representation, unless you change the type from text to some other type which is not text or you change some other type which is not text to text". This is literally all I want to know, and it's so simple and axiomatic that I am amazed that I can find trillions of articles and pages which talk around these statements but do not state them directly.

    We will probably be moving within a year, so we have to make some decisions regarding office layout. At the moment, our company is basically one big office. When our developers can't bother to be disturbed at all, we all have our own headphones to mute the outside world. Still, it seems a lot of people feel that private offices are no doubt the way to go. From Joel's article Private Offices Redux: Not every programmer in the world wants to work in a private office. In fact quite a few would tell you unequivocally that they prefer the camaradarie and easy information sharing of an open space. Don't fall for it. They also want M&Ms for breakfast and a pony. Open space is fun but not productive. Even though I can understand the benefit on productivity, does having a private office really result in more net productivity? There seem to be plenty of companies that create wide open spaces and still maintain good productivity. Or so it seems. (I should mention many of them use cubicles, though) What is your opinion on this? What does your company do? Is there some middle ground in this?
