  • quering an external oracle db in rails application

    I have a website which useses a mysql database for its whole operation . But for a new requirement i need to query a external oracle database( used by other component) and compile a list of items and display in a page in the website. How is it possible to connect to a external database just for rendering a single page. And is it possible to cache the queried result for say 1 month before invalidating the cache and get the updated list of items. i dont want query the external oracle db for each request.

    Hello, I have a Java application, and use OJB as my ORM technology. I have an Oracle XE installation locally to develop against. The problem is when I need to debug a problem, I like looking at the SQL output. Here is an example of SQL I can view through the "Top SQL" interface in Oracle XE: select a_bunch_of_fields from KREW_DOC_TYP_T A0 WHERE ((UPPER(A0.DOC_TYP_NM) LIKE :1) AND A0.ACTV_IND = :2) AND A0.CUR_IND = :3 The problem is I would like to see the real value instead of ":1". I can't seem to find how I can configure this. I know the real values are working, because the application is responding as expected, for the most part (hence the bugs I am working on). Thanks, Jay

  • Major performance difference between two Oracle database instances

    I am working with two instances of an Oracle database, call them one and two. two is running on better hardware (hard disk, memory, CPU) than one, and two is one minor version behind one in terms of Oracle version (both are 11g). Both have the exact same table table_name with exactly the same indexes defined. I load 500,000 identical rows into table_name on both instances. I then run, on both instances: delete from table_name; This command takes 30 seconds to complete on one and 40 minutes to complete on two. Doing INSERTs and UPDATEs on the two tables has similar performance differences. Does anyone have any suggestions on what could have such a drastic impact on performance between the two databases?

  • Migrate a Django project from MySQL to Oracle

    Hi, I have a Django1.1 project that works with a legacy MySQL db. I'm trying to migrate this project to Oracle (xe and 11g). We have two options for the migration: - Use SQL developer to create a migration sql script. - Use Django fixtures. The schema created with the sql script from sql developer doesn't match the schema created from syncdb. For example, Django expects TIMESTAMP columns while sql developer creates DATE columns. Using syncdb with Django fixtures could be great but when trying to load the MySQL fixtures into Oracle, after using syncdb, I'm getting: IntegrityError: ORA-00001: unique constraint (USER.SYS_C004253) violated How can I find what part create the integrity error?     I am converting GTT's to oracle types as explained in an excellent answer by APC. however, some GTT's are being updated based on a select query from another table. Or in these cases we are better off using the global temporary table?

  • Oracle Unique Indexes

    I was creating a new table today in 10g when I noticed an interesting behavior. Here is an example of what I did: CREATE TABLE test_table ( field_1 INTEGER PRIMARY KEY ); Oracle will by default, create a non-null unique index for the primary key. I double checked this. After a quick check, I find a unique index name SYS_C0065645. Everything is working as expected so far. Now I did this: CREATE TABLE test_table ( field_1 INTEGER, CONSTRAINT pk_test_table PRIMARY KEY (field_1) USING INDEX (CREATE INDEX idx_test_table_00 ON test_table (field_1))); After describing my newly created index idx_test_table_00, I see that it is non-unique. I tried to insert duplicate data into the table and was stopped by the primary key constraint, proving that the functionality has not been affected. It seems strange to me that Oracle would allow a non-unique index to be used for a primary key constraint. Why is this allowed?

    I have two users Bob and Alice in Oracle, both created by running the following commands as sysdba from sqlplus: create user $blah identified by $password; grant resource, connect, create view to $blah; I want Bob to have complete access to Alice's schema (that is, all tables), but I'm not sure what grant to run, and whether to run it as sysdba or as Alice. Happy to hear about any good pointers to reference material as well -- don't seem to be able to get a good answer to this from either the Internet or "Oracle Database 10g The Complete Reference", which is sitting on my desk.

    In Oracle there is a mechanism to generate sequence numbers e.g.; CREATE SEQUENCE supplier_seq MINVALUE 1 MAXVALUE 999999999999999999999999999 START WITH 1 INCREMENT BY 1 CACHE 20; And then execute the statement supplier_seq.nextval to retrieve the next sequence number. How would you create the same functionality in MS SQL Server ? Edit: I'm not looking for ways to automaticly generate keys for table records. I need to generate a unique value that I can use as an (logical) ID for a process. So I need the exact functionality that Oracle provides.

    Hi there, I have an Excel Spreadsheeet. There is a cell containing a concatenated name and surname (don't ask why), for example: Cell A2 BLOGGSJOE On this cell, I would like to run the following SQL and output it to cell A3, A4 and A5 SELECT i.id, i.forename, i.surname FROM individual i WHERE UPPER(REPLACE('" & A2 & "', ' ', '')) = UPPER(REPLACE(i.surname|| i.forename, ' ', '')) AND NVL(i.ind_efface, 'N') = 'N' Any idea how I could perform an oracle query on each cell and return the result? I have enabled an oracle datasource connection in Excel, just not sure what to do now. Is this a stupid approach, and can you recommend a better more proficient way? Thanks muchly! I lack the necessary experience in this type of thing! :-) EDIT: I am aware that I could just write a simple ruby/php/python/whatever script to loop through the excel spreadsheet (or csv file), and then perform the query etc. but i thought there might be a quick way in excel itself.

    Hi, Using an Oracle temporary table does not generate much redo log as a normal table. However, the undo log is still generated. Thus, how can I write insert, update, or delete statement on a temporary table but Oracle will not generate undo log or generate as little as possible? Moreover, using /+append/ in the insert statement will generate little undo log. Am I correct? If not, could anyone explain me about using the hint /+append/? INSERT /*+APPEND*/ INTO table1(...)   • IIS 8 - PHP Manager - Enabling php_oci8.dll for Oracle Connection

    I would need to connect to Oracle DB in my PHP codes. I'm using Windows Server 2012, IIS 8 with PHP Manager. I opened IIS PHP Manager, then go to PHP Extensions, then I enabled "php_oci8.dll" extension. However when I tried to connect to Oracle DB I'm getting the following PHP error: PHP Fatal error: Call to undefined function oci_connect() I just restarted the IIS using the IIS Manager, but didn't done computer reboot. Do I need to reboot? Do I also need to download "instantclient-basic-windows.x64-12.1.0.1.0.zip"? If yes, do I just need to set it to classpath "Path" where I extracted?     We're a .NET team which uses the Oracle DB for a lot of reasons that I won't get into. But deployment has been a bitch. We are manually keeping track of all the changes to the schema in each version, by keeping a record of all the scripts that we run during development. Now, if a developer forgets to check-in his script to the source control after he ran it - which is not that rare - at the end of the iteration we get a great big headache. I hear that SQL Compare by Red-Gate might solve these kind of issues, but it only has SQL Server support. Anybody knows of a similar tool for Oracle? I've been unable to find one.

Now I face a challenge in synchronizing these database schemas every time from Source DB (DB1) to Target DB (DB2). Can anyone please help in letting me know how can achieve this synchronization?     Hey people! I guess you people know more about this, than the ServerFault-Peps - If I'm wrong please correct me! Maybe you experienced it with the Oracle-Databasesystem too that it could use a hell of processorcapacity but it just takes something arround 10% so the processor is bored and your procedures are as fast as a snail in the desert. Do you know any way to say to the system something like: "Hey! You got a lot of power little database-jedi, so use it!" Thanks for your time and burned out braincells to answer this one! Unfortunately, the Oracle Instant Client seems to be unable to connect to an Oracle 7 database (version 7.3.3 to be precise). Is there a way to query an older Oracle database from PHP?

I need the NextVal from an Oracle sequence. I do not need to insert it a database as part of an Id or Primary key. I just need to use the next val on the c# side.     Hi, I am using Oracle as database for my Rails applications and have got some pretty intense tables. I'm trying to find the particular entries using a query like this Author.all( :conditions => { :name => names } ) I have been working SQlite all along and just migrated to Oracle which complains that IN clause has more than 1000 entries. Obvious workaround would be to break it into subclauses for which I need to write some raw sql queries. Is there anything in Rails that facilitate this?
