• Amazon EC2 Creating Tunnel with OpenVPN

  I have followed these instructions: http://aws.amazon.com/articles/0639686206802544 I can ping the VPN endpoints and I have the corresponding VPC CIDR pointing to the EC2 instance in the route table. Here is my config: port 1194 proto udp dev tun # Remote peer and network remote Elastic_IP route 10.0.0.0/16 # Configure local and remote VPN endpoints ifconfig 169.254.255.1 169.254.255.2 # The pre-shared static key secret /etc/openvpn/ovpn.key keepalive 10 120 persist-key persist-tun log /var/log/openvpn.log verb 3 When I look at my logs, I get this error: RESOLVE: Cannot resolve host address: 10.0.0.0/16: Name or service not known OpenVPN ROUTE: failed to parse/resolve route for host/network: 10.0.0.0/16 in VPC1, the CIDR is 172.31.0.0/16 which is targeting the EC2 instance also running OpenVPN. I'm getting the same error from the Instance in VPC2 with the corresponding CIDR. Just for testing, i stopped the IPTABLES service I am running the Amazon linux AMI image (x64) as specified in the article I linked.

• Vim Stuck In Insert Mode

  I've been using Vim for several months now via my web host (they allow putty access). All of a sudden, the escape key has become unresponsive. I cannot exist insert or any other mode by simply hitting escape. I have to hit F1 which brings up the help in vim and kicks me into command mode. I'm most certain that my escape key on my keyboard is functioning fine since all of my windows shortcuts that use the escape key operate normally. I know this is a ridiculous question and I'm certain there's a lot more to look into regarding a solution. What I really need is a solid lead as to where to start looking. Things that might help: I'm using vim via putty I'm logging in using jailshell I'm not root

• How do I delete the Windows Explorer address bar history

  Note: I am NOT referring to Internet Explorer. I am using Windows XP and Windows Server 2008 and need to delete the history values from the file browser (aka Windows Explorer). Somebody put a password into the address bar as ftp://user:pass, and now I can't delete the value. Some forums say to delete this registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\TypedPaths In Windows XP, the key doesn't exist, and in Windows Server 2008, the key is there, but deleting it doesn't seem to help. Any help?

• Installing Win8 from ISO image error

  I installed a new SSD in my PC laptop which came with an OEM version of Windows 8. After trying unsuccesfully to get the OEM version of Windows onto the SSD drive I gave up and purchased and downloaded a NEW copy of Windows 8. After that I created an ISO image on my desktop machine and followed the instructions here to create a bootable USB flash drive. However, after going through the boot install process with the USB flash drive on my laptop I get the following message 'The product key entered does not match any of the Windows images available for installation. Enter a different product key.' But I wasn't asked to enter any key! Is this because the ISO image was created on a different machine? I really don't get why this should be so difficult.

• Problem with SNMP and MIBs

  I am installing Zabbix to monitor via snmp some devices from a machine running Ubuntu 12.04 server. There is a problem with MIB definitions, since snmp commands do no properly translate some of the MIBs. I have already installed the "snmp-mibs-downloader" package, so the files containing the MIB descriptions are properly installed. The MIB are only translated to obtain the numeric key (the MIB files are accessible to the snmp commands), but the results returned by the snmpget command do not properly translate the key. The zabbix templates that I am using do expect the key translated (SNMPv2-MIB::sysUpTime.0) , so, the current results are not recognised and these are ignored. Test case: $ snmptranslate -On SNMPv2-MIB::sysUpTime.0 .1.3.6.1.2.1.1.3.0 $ snmpget -v 2c -c public 192.168.1.1 1.3.6.1.2.1.1.3.0 iso.3.6.1.2.1.1.3.0 = Timeticks: (2911822510) 337 days, 0:23:45.10 On another machine (running a very old Red Hat based distribution), the snmp commands perform both, the directe and reverse traslation, as expected: # snmptranslate -On SNMPv2-MIB::sysUpTime.0 .1.3.6.1.2.1.1.3.0 # snmpget -v 2c -c public 192.168.1.1 1.3.6.1.2.1.1.3.0 SNMPv2-MIB::sysUpTime.0 = Timeticks: (2911819485) 337 days, 0:23:14.85 What is the problem on my Ubuntu box? • First time application where to start?

  After many years of searches and copy pasting, I'm still looking for simple solution that can transliterate text input on the fly from one key set to another. There are quite few online services that provide this feature but it still quite annoying to go online all the time. Unfortunately there is not that many applications left which are capable of doing so, and none of them supported by this day. I decided to make my own and at same time to learn something new for my self. The idea is quite simple: application should sit in system tray and wait until input language get changed, for example to Russian. If Russian language is activated, application should start to listen for user key strokes combination and replace them based on custom dictionary for example R = ?, SH = ? etc. I should be able to bind application to any installed language (Russian, Ukrainian, Bulgarian, Belarusian etc.) and customise dictionary for any of them. So my question is: Which language should I chose for this task C++, C# or might be something hardcore like Assembler, as application should work natively with Windows XP/Vista/7 or possibly Mac. (cross platform support is good but my main target is Windows) Due to nature of application behaviour how can I tell anti-virus software that it is not a "Key Logger" and basically not a virus? Where should I start and what should I be aware of? P.S. My current programming knowledge is quite basic, PHP and JavaScript with Object Oriented approach.

• Tutorial: Getting Started with the NoSQL JavaScript / Node.js API for MySQL Cluster

  Tutorial authored by Craig Russell and JD Duncan  The MySQL Cluster team are working on a new NoSQL JavaScript connector for MySQL. The objectives are simplicity and high performance for JavaScript users: - allows end-to-end JavaScript development, from the browser to the server and now to the world's most popular open source database - native "NoSQL" access to the storage layer without going first through SQL transformations and parsing. Node.js is a complete web platform built around JavaScript designed to deliver millions of client connections on commodity hardware. With the MySQL NoSQL Connector for JavaScript, Node.js users can easily add data access and persistence to their web, cloud, social and mobile applications. While the initial implementation is designed to plug and play with Node.js, the actual implementation doesn't depend heavily on Node, potentially enabling wider platform support in the future. Implementation The architecture and user interface of this connector are very different from other MySQL connectors in a major way: it is an asynchronous interface that follows the event model built into Node.js. To make it as easy as possible, we decided to use a domain object model to store the data. This allows for users to query data from the database and have a fully-instantiated object to work with, instead of having to deal with rows and columns of the database. The domain object model can have any user behavior that is desired, with the NoSQL connector providing the data from the database. To make it as fast as possible, we use a direct connection from the user's address space to the database. This approach means that no SQL (pun intended) is needed to get to the data, and no SQL server is between the user and the data. The connector is being developed to be extensible to multiple underlying database technologies, including direct, native access to both the MySQL Cluster "ndb" and InnoDB storage engines. The connector integrates the MySQL Cluster native API library directly within the Node.js platform itself, enabling developers to seamlessly couple their high performance, distributed applications with a high performance, distributed, persistence layer delivering 99.999% availability. The following sections take you through how to connect to MySQL, query the data and how to get started. Connecting to the database A Session is the main user access path to the database. You can create a closure to handle these variables, or use a feature of the connector to remember your variables. The connector api takes a fixed number of parameters and returns a fixed number of result parameters to the callback function. But the connector will keep track of variables for you and return them to the callback. • International Dvorak keyboard doesn't trigger hot-keys

  Hi, I just configured a Hebrew-Dvorak keyboard with Keyboard Layout Manager. What this means is that when I hold Shift+any key, the input is the capital English letter. It works just fine, however, hot-keys that involves the Ctrl key aren't being triggered when the input language is set to Hebrew (i.e Ctrl+L in FF which should set the focus on the URL bar) If however I hit the matching Qwerty key (input lang=Hebrew) I get the desirable result (i.e the URL bar get focused). The only thing I can think of is completely removing the US-Qwerty layout, but I don't know how this can be achieved, and besides, it may not solve the problem. Thanks, Almog.

• Upload to PPA succeeded but packages doesn't appear

  I'm trying to upload packages to my PPA for the first time. I want to use the PPA for customized versions of the OpenStack Compute (nova) project, so I tried to do a test by uploading packages corresponding to the bexar release of this project (lp:nova/bexar), with a new version number and changelog entry. I signed the source packages using my OpenGPG key, which has been uploaded to the ubuntu keyserver: $ dch -v 2011.1-0ubuntu2-isi1 -D lucid "ISI bexar build #1" $ dpkg-buildpackage -s -rfakeroot -tc -D -k4C8A14AB When I tried to upload the files to the repository, it seemed to work (real email obscured): $ dput ppa:lorinh/ppa nova_2011.2~bzr663-1isi1_source.changes Checking signature on .changes gpg: Signature made Fri 11 Feb 2011 03:52:50 PM EST using RSA key ID 4C8A14AB gpg: Good signature from "Lorin Hochstein <lorin@...>" Good signature on /home/lorin/packaging/nova_2011.2~bzr663-1isi1_source.changes. There should be no problem when we initially encryption the column, but we have requirements that every year the Encryption Key needs to change. It seems that this requirement may be problem. Assumption: The table that includes the column that has sensitive data will have 500 million records. Below are the steps we have thought about implementing. • Making a cracked or activated windows uncracked

  I have a pc which has windows 7 license but I installed windows from an image i downloaded and it is already activated. for validating genuine microsoft, i need to entet my own product key but the necessary activation tools do not exist in my windows folder. What do? I googled stuff but because the keywords are too broad I couldn't find a useful tool DAZ doesn't work, activation button doesn't show up. When I enter my original key to Windows Anytime Upgrade, I get this error When I attempt using slmgr, I get this error I used sfc /scannow Now slmgr is existing, I entered slmgr.vbs -ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX (replacing X es with the cd key) the operation successful. Now I have installed Microsoft Security essentials, which means the problem is solved. • How to use gestures on gnome shell?

  I have installed Ubuntu 12.10 on my Acer Apsire V5 touch, and I want to know hot to activate the gestures on my clickpad in Gnome SHell, because in Unity I can use them with no problems. So, is there a way to use the gestures on Gnome Shell? Gestures: Pinch to Zoom Move windows with 3 fingers "Natural scroll" etc... And if it's possible to fully use the touch screen, because it fails when I do a click on it.

• How to Create a Minimize All Windows (Win + M) Hotkey for Mac OS X

  Windows users have been able to minimize every window on their desktop ever since keyboards with the Win key started showing up — just tap WIN + M on your keyboard, and every window is minimized. For Mac OS X, it’s not quite as simple. You can, of course, use the CMD + OPT + H + M shortcut key combination to hide most windows… but that’s a lot of keys to hit at once, and it doesn’t always minimize everything in my experience. So like everything else I wanted from Windows, it was time to figure out how to get it on OS X as well. This method uses QuickSilver to provide the shortcut key trigger — if there’s a better way to do that, please let us know.   Disney has created a real buzz at this year's NRF event. Yesterday morning we began the Oracle Retail Exchange program with a visit to the flagship Disney store in Times Square. Additionally Oracle made a key announcement with Disney  on Oracle Retail's Point of Sale implementation in 330 stores worldwide. Today   Disney's Steve Finney gave a super session on The Magic of Disney at the NRF Big Show. We also saw Disney making an exclusive news announcement about their plans for Global store openings at the Oracle trade show stand - with a little help from Mickey and Minnie Mouse.   I am currently using Windows 8 on my desktop PC. I want to upgrade to Windows 8.1. I heard that Microsoft provides this update through Microsoft Store for free. But in My home I don't have a faster internet connection. I downloaded a Windows 8.1 ISO from cafe, but when I started installing, it asks for a key. I typed my original Key for windows 8, but it didn't work. Is there any way for me to update to Windows 8.1 without an internet connection and without purchasing another key? Thank you

  Hi there, I want to access a web application running on a web server behind my office firewall from an external machine. We have a bastion host running sshd that is accessible from the Internet. I want to know if this solution is a bad idea: Create an account on the bastion host with shell=/bin/false and no password ('testuser') Create a ssh RSA key on the external machine Add the public RSA key to the testuser's authorized_keys file ssh to the bastion host from the external host using: ssh -N 8888:targethost:80 run my tests from the external host shut down the ssh tunnel I understand that if my RSA private key were compromised then someone could ssh to the bastion host. But are there other reasons this solution is a bad idea? thank you!

• Where'd My Data Go? (and/or...How Do I Get Rid of It?)

  Want to get a better idea of how cascade deletes work in Entity Framework Code First scenarios? Want to see it in action? Stick with us as we quickly demystify what happens when you tell your data context to nuke a parent entity. This post is authored by Calgary .NET User Group Leader David Paquette with help from Microsoft MVP in Asp.Net James Chambers. We got to spend a great week back in March at Prairie Dev Con West, chalk full of sessions, presentations, workshops, conversations and, of course, questions.  One of the questions that came up during my session: "How does Entity Framework Code First deal with cascading deletes?". James and I had different thoughts on what the default was, if it was different from SQL server, if it was the same as EF proper and if there was a way to override whatever the default was.  So we built a set of examples and figured out that the answer is simple: it depends.  (Download Samples) Consider the example of a hockey league. You have several different entities in the league including games, teams that play the games and players that make up the teams. Each team also has a mascot.  If you delete a team, we need a couple of things to happen: The team, games and mascot will be deleted, and The players for that team will remain in the league (and therefore the database) but they should no longer be assigned to a team. So, let's make this start to come together with a look at the default behaviour in SQL when using an EDMX-driven project. The Reference – Understanding EF's Behaviour with an EDMX/DB First Approach First up let’s take a look at the DB first approach.  In the database, we defined 4 tables: Teams, Players, Mascots, and Games.  We also defined 4 foreign keys as follows: Players.Team_Id (NULL) –> Teams.Id Mascots.Id (NOT NULL) –> Teams.Id (ON DELETE CASCADE) Games.HomeTeam_Id (NOT NULL) –> Teams.Id Games.AwayTeam_Id (NOT NULL) –> Teams.Id Note that by specifying ON DELETE CASCADE for the Mascots –> Teams foreign key, the database will automatically delete the team’s mascot when the team is deleted.  While we want the same behaviour for the Games –> Teams foreign keys, it is not possible to accomplish this using ON DELETE CASCADE in SQL Server.  Specifying a ON DELETE CASCADE on these foreign keys would cause a circular reference error: The series of cascading referential actions triggered by a single DELETE or UPDATE must form a tree that contains no circular references. No table can appear more than one time in the list of all cascading referential actions that result from the DELETE or UPDATE – MSDN When we create an entity data model from the above database, we get the following:   In order to get the Games to be deleted when the Team is deleted, we need to specify End1 OnDelete action of Cascade for the HomeGames and AwayGames associations.   Now, we have an Entity Data Model that accomplishes what we set out to do.  One caveat here is that Entity Framework will only properly handle the cascading delete when the the players and games for the team have been loaded into memory.  For a more detailed look at Cascade Delete in EF Database First, take a look at this blog post by Alex James.   Building The Same Sample with EF Code First Next, we're going to build up the model with the code first approach.  EF Code First is defined on the Ado.Net team blog as such: Code First allows you to define your model using C# or VB.Net classes, optionally additional configuration can be performed using attributes on your classes and properties or by using a Fluent API. Your model can be used to generate a database schema or to map to an existing database. Entity Framework Code First follows some conventions to determine when to cascade delete on a relationship.  More details can be found on MSDN: If a foreign key on the dependent entity is not nullable, then Code First sets cascade delete on the relationship. If a foreign key on the dependent entity is nullable, Code First does not set cascade delete on the relationship, and when the principal is deleted the foreign key will be set to null. The multiplicity and cascade delete behavior detected by convention can be overridden by using the fluent API. For more information, see Configuring Relationships with Fluent API (Code First). Our DbContext consists of 4 DbSets: public DbSet<Team> Teams { get; set; } public DbSet<Player> Players { get; set; } public DbSet<Mascot> Mascots { get; set; } public DbSet<Game> Games { get; set; } When we set the Mascot –> Team relationship to required, Entity Framework will automatically delete the Mascot when the Team is deleted.  This can be done either using the [Required] data annotation attribute, or by overriding the OnModelCreating method of your DbContext and using the fluent API. Data Annotations: public class Mascot { public int Id { get; set; } public string Name { get; set; } [Required] public virtual Team Team { get; set; } } Fluent API: protected override void OnModelCreating(DbModelBuilder modelBuilder) { modelBuilder.Entity<Mascot>().HasRequired(m => m.Team); } The Player –> Team relationship is automatically handled by the Code First conventions. When a Team is deleted, the Team property for all the players on that team will be set to null.  No additional configuration is required, however all the Player entities must be loaded into memory for the cascading to work properly. The Game –> Team relationship causes some grief in our Code First example.  If we try setting the HomeTeam and AwayTeam relationships to required, Entity Framework will attempt to set On Cascade Delete for the HomeTeam and AwayTeam foreign keys when creating the database tables.  As we saw in the database first example, this causes a circular reference error and throws the following SqlException: Introducing FOREIGN KEY constraint 'FK_Games_Teams_AwayTeam_Id' on table 'Games' may cause cycles or multiple cascade paths. Specify ON DELETE NO ACTION or ON UPDATE NO ACTION, or modify other FOREIGN KEY constraints. Could not create constraint. To solve this problem, we need to disable the default cascade delete behaviour using the fluent API: protected override void OnModelCreating(DbModelBuilder modelBuilder) { modelBuilder.Entity<Mascot>().HasRequired(m => m.Team); modelBuilder.Entity<Team>() .HasMany(t => t.HomeGames) .WithRequired(g => g.HomeTeam) .WillCascadeOnDelete(false); modelBuilder.Entity<Team>() .HasMany(t => t.AwayGames) .WithRequired(g => g.AwayTeam) .WillCascadeOnDelete(false); base.OnModelCreating(modelBuilder); } Unfortunately, this means we need to manually manage the cascade delete behaviour.  When a Team is deleted, we need to manually delete all the home and away Games for that Team. foreach (Game awayGame in jets.AwayGames.ToArray()) { entities.Games.Remove(awayGame); } foreach (Game homeGame in homeGames) { entities.Games.Remove(homeGame); } entities.Teams.Remove(jets); entities.SaveChanges();   Overriding the Defaults – When and How To As you have seen, the default behaviour of Entity Framework Code First can be overridden using the fluent API.  This can be done by overriding the OnModelCreating method of your DbContext, or by creating separate model override files for each entity.  More information is available on MSDN.   Going Further These were simple examples but they helped us illustrate a couple of points. First of all, we were able to demonstrate the default behaviour of Entity Framework when dealing with cascading deletes, specifically how entity relationships affect the outcome. Secondly, we showed you how to modify the code and control the behaviour to get the outcome you're looking for. Finally, we showed you how easy it is to explore this kind of thing, and we're hoping that you get a chance to experiment even further. For example, did you know that: Entity Framework Code First also works seamlessly with SQL Azure (MSDN) Database creation defaults can be overridden using a variety of IDatabaseInitializers  (Understanding Database Initializers) You can use Code Based migrations to manage database upgrades as your model continues to evolve (MSDN) Next Steps There's no time like the present to start the learning, so here's what you need to do: Get up-to-date in Visual Studio 2010 (VS2010 | SP1) or Visual Studio 2012 (VS2012) Build yourself a project to try these concepts out (or download the sample project) Get into the community and ask questions! • remap Caps Lock on OSX 10.6.8

  I have for a long time used KeyRemap4MacBook in Snow Leopard. I have always stayed on top of OS update. Today, suddenly my CapsLock no longer was remapped to Control, but it was just a regular CapsLock. So I went into the settings for KeyRemap4MacBook and noticed that CapsLock could no longer be set. Instead it gave a link to PCKeyboardHack. So I downloaded that and tried to use it. But when I try to select the Control key to remap to, it just becomes some kind erratic delete key or something. Definitely not a Control key.

• Windows 8.1 fresh install with Windows 8 licence

  I purchased Windows 8 online from Microsoft a while ago. Today Windows 8.1 was released as a free update to Windows 8 users over the Windows Store. I was planning to do a fresh install of Windows 8.1 to have a clean system again and UEFI support because I got new hardware since the Windows 8 installation. So my questions are: Where do I get the ISO installation medium for Windows 8.1 64-bit? I tried this microsoft site where I initially got my Windows 8 ISO from, but when entering my Windows 8 key in the Windows 8.1 installer, it says the key is wrong. Even if I get the ISO, will my old key work? I'm concerned because it didn't work in their installer (see previous point) Do they seriously want me to reinstall Windows 8 and after that upgrade to Windows 8.1 through their Store?!
