  • Could my 64-bit server be somehow identifying itself as a 32-bit server?

    Has anyone ever heard of a 64-bit OS identifying itself as a 32-bit OS? We have a Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 development server. We've been trying to activate it with a product key from MSDN, but it keeps telling us the the key is invalid. I've opened a ticket with MSDN for this. Then something odd happened -- I tried to install a 64-bit version of SQL Server 2005. After it extracted, we got this message: This version of hotfix.exe is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program... Now, we're pretty sure this is a 64-bit OS. Computer Properties says: System Type: 64-bit Operating System Also, we have both a "Program Files" and a "Program Files (x64)" directory. I don't know how the product key activator or the SQL install program attempts to divine the type of OS, but could it be...wrong?

  • Gateway NE56R & mouse swipe gesture...how to disable?

    Can anyone tell me how to shut off the swipe gesture mechanism on my computer? It's driving me crazy. I cannot use a single application without having my computer screen minimize every time I move my hand over the mouse following a mouse-click, pointer movement, etc. Having to maximize my spreadsheets, documents, and applications so much is undercutting my productivity. How some software engineer/inventor imagined that this mouse/gesture swipe gimmick would be helpful to computer users is inconceivable to me. It is a massive annoyance. I've found instructions online for disabling this obnoxious feature, but all the instructions involve messing with my registry, which I don't want to do. I will be SO GRATEFUL to any techie who can tell me how to disable this horrible mouse swipe mechanism without having to alter my registry! I'm using a Gateway NE56R Notebook, Windows 7 operating system, and an Inland USB Mouse (model no. 37535). Thank you in advance!

  • RAID-0 problem with a Sony sporting a new HDD

    Sony Windows 7 PC. Originally had 2 x 300 Gb HDD. One HDD completely pancaked so have replaced with a new 500 Gb HDD. When both drives are connected the 300GB doesn't appear to be recognized as a 300Gb HDD as a separate entity. BIOS sees it but the operating system only sees a total of 465GB of HD space. When both disks are attached under disk management it shows one 465Gb as RAID 0 and the new drive as STxxxxxx 465Gb. My question I guess is what should I see in total HDD space and is this configured correctly as I thought I would see 2 separate drives 1x500Gb and 1x300Gb. My customer insisted that prior to the HDD crash he saw 2 drives both registering as 300Gb (a c: and d: drive).

  • Links won't open in Outlook

    About a week ago Chrome (my default browser) stopped working and I ended up reinstalling. After that, however, links in Outlook 2007, when clicked, no longer open. Instead, I get a warning that reads: General failure. The URL was: URL. Application not found. I presume that there is some MIME or file type association that needs to be configured at the OS level, but I've not had any luck so far. My operating system is Windows 7. Any ideas? EDIT #1 Wayne Johnston suggested I set Chrome as my default browser, but when I go to the Set Default Programs screen in Windows 7 (via Control Panel) I do not see Chrome in the list of programs. How do I get it to show up there?

  • database on SSD: data only or the DBM program too?

    I plan on moving the data I use for statistical analysis (100-ish Gb) onto an SSD. The data is either sqlite single-file db's, or postgresql-managed data. The SSD is 240 Gb, 550 MB/s read and 520 MB/s write. Should I reserve that space for the data only, or would it be a good idea to install the operating system (Mac OS X) and the application directory (Adobe Suite, Microsoft Office and the like) on the SSD too? And would it make a substantial speed difference whether I also install the postgresql binaries on the SSD? I have plenty of other space (another 300Gb hard-drive, and a 1Tb one). Don't know the features of the non-SSD drives, though they're our standard equipment on all Macs, and they're definitely OK. Thanks.

  • What do you do when every possible business idea is already taken?

    I have a bit of free time and lots of enthusiasm for software and the web. I want to make a start-up, to sell kind of product or online service, but I'm having a hard time coming up with business ideas that haven't already been implemented. For example, I thought of making an e-ordering website for ordering food from restaurants online. Good thing I typed it into Google, because the market is already full of hundreds of websites doing the same thing and competing heavily. The same thing has happened with so many other business ideas I've become excited and passionate about - they're all taken. What's your response to this? Do you agree that all the good ideas seem to be taken? Or do you think there is room for new businesses, and that I'm just not thinking (or looking) hard enough? Have you ever tried idea after idea, only to find that it was already being done, and you had to move onto something else?

  • OS X will not register newly installed network adapters

    I have purchased an Edimax 7318USg and tested it on a Windows machine (works). The installation process for the software for this adapter runs smoothly. However, OS X simply does not recognize new network adapters. When you go to System Preferences/Network, a new network adapter should be present/there should be an alert. This is not the case. Why might this be? Is there a setting I may reset to force the operating system to recognize this? Thanks!

  • Flex: Prevent scrollbar from covering content when automatically displayed.

    I have a canvas in Flex that shall be able only to be scrolled in vertical direction, so I set the attributes of the canvas as follows: verticalScrollPolicy="auto" horizontalScrollPolicy="off" The problem here is that the vertical scrollbar covers the content when it appears - altough there is enough horizontal room left. I would have expected that the content size would have been automatically adjusted. When setting the vertical scroll policy to "on", no content is covered also. In case I set both scroll policies to 'auto' I also get a horizontal scroll bar just for scrolling to the area that is covered by the vertical scroll bar. Is there a workaround how I can relayout the content of the canvas when the vertical scroll bar is shown so that it does not cover any content?

  • Why is VMware vSphere Client hanging at the console?

    When I use the vSphere Client (against an ESXi 4.1 server) it hangs a lot. It's always at the same place - using the console on a VM. The console stops responding - and a lot of times, the management window stops responding as well. The operating system won't close the window (as the application isn't responding) and requires a force close. I've had the console refuse to give up the mouse, and have had the console freeze with the cursor in the top left (before any VM software starts, maybe?). The environment is this: the system is a Dell laptop running Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick) fully updated with VirtualBox OSE running Windows XP (also fully updated). The vSphere Client is running in the Windows XP VM. Got all that? How do I keep these hangs from happening? It is very aggravating. I'm still trying just to get the VM loaded with Ubuntu Server...

  • How to hide a partition?

    I bought a small 32 GB SSD to store the operating system (Windows 7) and my applications. I'll copy the existing boot partition (30 GB) from my harddisk (WD Velociraptor) to the SSD using GParted but I'd like to keep the existing partition intact (keeping all data on it) so I can go back to it if there is a problem with the SSD. How can I hide the partition so it is not visible anymore to Windows? What should I change with GParted? Second question: how can I keep the harddisk partition synced with the SSD so I have a backup? I'm looking for a near real-time solution (not something like Acronis Drive Image).

    Just bought a new HP pavilion desktop with Windows 8. I wish to totally remove Windows 8 and all data on the hard drive, remove any windows partitions, delete all data, and then install a fresh Linux. Problem is I can seem to get to boot from USB or boot from CD. It appears that Windows 8 added the following two "features": UEFI which substitutes what we have known as the BIOS Secure Boot which prevents anything but the installed operating system How do I completely and totally erase all traces of Windows 8? Is it still possible to reformat the hard drive? I don't want a duel boot, I don't want to go back to Windows 7, I just want anything Windows gone.

  • Windows XP waits for usb drive on almost every operation.

    Hello everyone, I have a problem with my Windows XP operating system, particularly with the USB device that is plugged in - 1TB WD My Book external drive. I haven't found any information about such behaviour when searching in Internet, so I have to ask You. The problem is: when I am using computer, especially during work (programming), when I try to access any information on a hard disk ("internal" one), Windows seems to "consult" it with the external drive. For example, when I open file selection dialog window, if I try to change directory, system activates external drive, reads something (I hear the disk's operational noise) and after some seconds of such pause it makes the operations I requested. There are many situations in which I can reproduce this behavior - opening My Computer, shutting down system, opening partition folder from My Computer - every operation involves the usage of external drive. Please understand me properly - this is not something that happens EVERY time, but at least "many" times a day. What causes such behavior and how can I "turn off" external drive when it's not needed? In the server management window, it shows that the server is up and running but when I try to browse it in a web browser, it doesn't respond.   • OpenGL support no longer available

    I've been using OpenGL hardware acceleration in programs such as Adobe Photoshop CS4 and Adobe After Effects CS4. I've noticed that recently the options for OpenGL previews are disabled because my graphics card seems to not support OpenGL. But that doesn't make any sense whatsoever. I know for a fact that my graphics card does have support for OpenGL and it worked before. I checked for driver updates just the other day. Anybody know what's going on?   • How can I boot Ubuntu 10.04 on my MacBook Pro from a USB hard drive?

    I installed Ubuntu 10.04 to my MacBook Pro (not the latest gen with i7, but one before that) on an external, USB harddrive (GRUB installed to the external as well). When I hold down the option key to try to select the external, it doesn't show up. After some looking around, my understanding is that it won't boot 'unsupported' operating system from an external drive. I have ran OSX from an external when I upgraded my harddrive. What can I do (or is it even possible) to allow my MacBook Pro to boot the Ubuntu drive?

Lets say you have a simple unix operating system that you need only build and run on, but you want to do all of the development on another machine.     If you have checked out the new MSDN layout recently you will notice that there are tabs for example code: Do you see that there is room for F# (is there really anyone using that?) but not for Delphi! My question is: can we all ask Microsoft to add a Delphi tab and as a community take care off adding samples. If you agree please request Microsoft to add the Delphi tab (the more people, the more likely Microsoft will respond).
