  • Handling ties when ranking from the highest to the lowest

    I am trying to make a ranking manager for a small project.The totals are stored in the database.I can easily get the max and min using mysql and also arrange the records descending.The problem comes in when there is a tie.I need to show a tie in the form:1,2,3,3,4,5,6,7,7,7,7, etc.The repeated numbers will show the ties.I have been thinking of ways of achieving the above but i need more ideas;mine is seems long and complicated. Can anybody share his/her idea of doing the ties.

    I've an HEADER.html page and a lots of directories in the same directory and want to show the header.html and dir-listing together at the site index like at this site : http://www.mirrorservice.org/sites/ftp.apache.org/ in my configuration : dir-listing.activate = "enable" dir-listing.show-header = "enable" it only shows header but not directory listing. Any suggestions?

    Using delayed_job to send emails- files are filename.text.html.erb Sometimes they show up in my inbox rendered properly and sometimes they show up as HTML code. I notice that when I stop and start the delayed_job daemon on the server, it seems to help in some cases but not all the time. Any ideas?

    I would like to make sure if a textbox has any content at all, that jQuery can show it's parent (an <li class="hidden_dedication") element and set add a class of 'shown'.     I have problem using IIS 7 and SQL Server 2008. When I trying to show my website using IIS as webserver I get the message "[SqlException (0x80131904): Login failed for user..." When I using the webserver included in Visual Studio 2010 to show same website there is no problem to access the database. Why is it working with VS2010 webserver but not with IIS?

In this busy world, we all have sixty seconds to learn something new – no matter how much busy we are. In this episode of the series, we talk about another interesting feature of SQL Server Management Studio. In SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) we have two button side by side. 1) Execute (!) and 2) Debug (>). It is quite confusing to a few developers. The debug button which looks like a play button encourages developers to click on the same thinking it will execute the code. Also developer with a Visual Studio background often click it because of their habit. However, Debug button is not the same as Execute button. In most of the cases developers want to click on Execute to run the query but by mistake they click on Debug and it wastes their valuable time. It is very easy to fix this. If developers are not frequently using a debug feature in SQL Server they should hide it from the toolbar itself. This will reduce the chances to incorrectly click on the debug button greatly as well save lots of time for developer as invoking debug processes and turning it off takes a few extra moments.   • Giving a Bomberman AI intelligent bomb placement

    I'm trying to implement an AI algorithm for Bomberman. Currently I have a working but not very smart rudimentary implementation (the current AI is overzealous in placing bombs). This is the first AI I've ever tried implementing and I'm a bit stuck. The more sophisticated algorithms I have in mind (the ones that I expect to make better decisions) are too convoluted to be good solutions. What general tips do you have for implementing a Bomberman AI? Are there radically different approaches for making the bot either more defensive or offensive? Edit: Current algorithm My current algorithm goes something like this (pseudo-code): 1) Try to place a bomb and then find a cell that is safe from all the bombs, including the one that you just placed. To find that cell, iterate over the four directions; if you can find any safe divergent cell and reach it in time (eg. if the direction is up or down, look for a cell that is found to the left or right of this path), then it's safe to place a bomb and move in that direction. 2) If you can't find and safe divergent cells, try NOT placing a bomb and look again. This time you'll only need to look for a safe cell in only one direction (you don't have to diverge from it). 3) If you still can't find a safe cell, don't do anything. for $(direction) in (up, down, left, right): place bomb at current location if (can find and reach divergent safe cell in current $(direction)): bomb = true move = $(direction) return for $(direction) in (up, down, left, right): do not place bomb at current location if (any safe cell in the current $(direction)): bomb = false move = $(direction) return else: bomb = false move = stay_put This algorithm makes the bot very trigger-happy (it'll place bombs very frequently). It doesn't kill itself, but it does have a habit of making itself vulnerable by going into dead ends where it can be blocked and killed by the other players. Do you have any suggestions on how I might improve this algorithm? Or maybe I should try something completely different? One of the problems with this algorithm is that it tends to leave the bot with very few (frequently just one) safe cells on which it can stand. This is because the bot leaves a trail of bombs behind it, as long as it doesn't kill itself. However, leaving a trail of bombs behind leaves few places where you can hide. If one of the other players or bots decide to place a bomb somewhere near you, it often happens that you have no place to hide and you die. I need a better way to decide when to place bombs.

As each user may upload less than the maximum limit of 20 images, there would be some "empty" images on the page. I am using javascript to hide these empty images. The loading of the profile page would generate a series of 404 errors depending on the number of empty images. Would these 404 errors affect the SEO of the page and the website?

Any other thoughts appreciated.
