• What language should an 11-year old start with to learn game programming?

  I have a 11-year old son who wants to do game programming. I've started him on C++ (C++11) and he's learned iostreams, looping, functions, logic and flow control. I'm using the standard library and no memory management at all. But I would like to ask: What language would you suggest for a pre-teen (Python, ...)? What books would you suggest? We looked at one book that was just for console ASCII games. I liked the C++ that it taught but I think he'll get bored without some graphics at some point.

• Access Token Verification

  I have spent quite a few days reading up on Oauth and token based security measures for REST API's and I am currently looking at implementing an Oauth based authentication approach almost exactly like the one described in this post (OAuth alternative for a 2 party system). From what I understand, the token is to be verified upon each request to the resource server. This means the resource server would need to retrieve the token from a datastore to verify the clients token. Given this would have to happen upon every request I am concerned about the speed implications of hitting a datastore like MySQL or NoSQL upon every request just to verify the token. Is this the standard way to verify tokens by having them stored in a RDBMS or NoSQL database and retrieved upon each request? Or is it a suitable solution to have them cached (baring in mind that we are talking millions of users)?

  I've been trying to find a solution on how to change the screen resolution on the login screen and other users. .xprofile will only affect my account. I've been searching for a few months but I got nothing. Please help. It would be easier if the "Default Resolution" was still there in the monitors settings. Plus, I'm afraid of editing the xorg.conf. Last time was ugly... For example Purpose of Website: (sell products, reduce number of enquires, reduce work load, etc) Do you have you’re an existing logo? (can you send it via email) Do you have a preferred font for the website text? Do you have a colour theme for your logo, business cards, shop you would like to keep on the website Do you have photos you can provide of your Products? etc Ofcause it would need to be tweaked slightly for each customer but I was looking for a generic document as a baseline.

  I'm learning C++ and I'm using g++ on Linux for practicing. 1) I want to know if people working as programmers use g++ -pedantic flag and also it's importance in real world. 2) What about other compilers, do they also allow this? Has this become some de-facto standard? I'm interested because I'm reading C++ Primer where the author points that its illegal to use non-const expression as dimension in array definition and g++ by default allows it. And there might be other things I'm unaware of.

• How do I secure a Tomcat installation?

  I have installed tomcat on my Ubuntu Home 11.10 system and can successfully access the test page online after port forwarding on 8080 within my router. I have not made any other changes to the router, Ubuntu or the tomcat install, everything else has remained standard. I intend on using this to play around with Java Servlets and basic web development for my own personal use. What steps, if any, would you suggest I take to ensure this is secure? Should I change anything within the Tomcat configuration?   I’m writing simple strategy game (in xna), and would like to have an animated background. In my game all the actions happens inside one screen and thus standard parallax effect does not look appropriate. In the book I am reading the author explains that interfaces are the ultimate abstract class and that it simply sets the standard of certain methods the inheriting class will have, but then provides the following example... static void Main(string[] args) { ... • Big delay to open web pages on Ubuntu 11.10; also slow torrent client speed

  The keywords for my issue are too common among other issues, so, I couldn't find anything that could answer me: why will it take around 30+ seconds for any of my browsers to open a page? happens even with google.com... with both Firefox and Chromium. This does not happen while I use Windows, from exactly the same point at my house (I've got enough wi-fi signal here for sure). Also, the standard torrent client won't hit the max download speed... I can hit 1 Mb/s with utorrent on Windows, and can't go over 300 kbps here. I tried changing the program settings, no results. Please help me. I REALLY don't wanna go back to Windows. Thanks in advance, I admire this community, and I'm sorry that I couldn't find something that could help me. I already solved a lot of issues without asking, but couldn't do it this time.

However, it still results in a lot of data loss, as all of the work the programmer was working on is dropped: software not checked in is possibly lost, documents not finished are lost, releases in process are slowed down or stopped, and a huge amount of knowledge could be lost. It seems the potential data loss is more than offset by the actual data loss. How can all losses, both potential and actual, be mimimized?

  I would like to put a program together to calculate the number of 60' pieces would be needed from a list of shorter pieces. For example, I sell rebar cut to length from our standard length of 60'-0". Now the length the customer requires are as follows: 343 pc @ 12.5' 35 pc @ 13' 10 pc @ 15' 63 pc @ 15.5'....... There are 56 total lengths ranging from 12.5' to 30.58' The idea is to limit the amount of waste from the 60' piece. The input from the user would be: number of differnt lengths Length of piece to cut from count of different lengths The result would be the number of prime pieces needed to fulfill the order. What well-known algorithms exist that could help me solve this problem?

I applied a creative approach to the matter and implemented a system which I think has a potential and looking promising (maybe not on the market but at least among some interested supporters).
