• NuGet - managing and removing mutil version packages in single solution

  SCENARIO One VS solution with n projects. Project A references package Y v1, Project B references package Y v2. It is now not possible to update all references to package Y for all projects in the solution using the NuGet package manage dialog at the solution level, it is only possible to do this when all projects reference the same version of package Y. Not a big deal for only two projects, but I'm dealing with lots of projects that through poor package management are referencing many package versions when they should all reference the same version. Before I spend the afternoon writing a console app. to auto update all package.config files for a solution so that each referenced package is only referenced via it's latest version (latest referenced, not the very latest, with exceptions/caveats etc)....is there a tool/method for doing this already? Or some other approach I am unaware of?

• Controlling CodeModel's code output formatting: putting lines between namespace declarations

  I'm making some experiments with Visual Studio's CodeModel. I tried creating a file with two namespaces in there through VS's Code Model: CodeModel codeModel = projItem.ContainingProject.CodeModel; codeModel.AddNamespace("Namespaces.FirstNamespace", "namespacestest.cs"); codeModel.AddNamespace("Namespaces.SecondNamespace", "namespacestest.cs"); the output of such code is: //file namespacestest.cs namespace Namespaces.FirstNamespace { } namespace Namespaces.SecondNamespace { } Which is almost what I'm looking for. The only catch here is that I'd like to control the spacing: having at least one line between the first and the second namespace. Does by chance anyone know of a way of achieving this? • Detecting Visual Studio Smart-tags events

  Is it possible to detect with VSX when any (or a particular) smart tag event is happening? I mean, every time we rename a variable, for example, a smart tag is available that allows us to change it through a form. I'd like to know if I can access that "text is changing" event. I don't mean to have to check for myself if the text is being changed and such, I'd like to make use of VS event system (if there is one). I gave this example but I'd like to know the "general system" of how smart tags work with VSX. Thanks

• New line or Carraige Return syntax problems

  Im pretty new to coding, heres my problem. Results->Text = "G55 > Y" + System::Convert::ToString(destY); "Results" is a System.Windows.Forms.Textbox "multiline btw", or so says VS. That line works fine, but i need a "new line or CR" at the end, so that i can repeat that line with different Literals and a different var in ToString. For days now ive tried different syntax's ive read about, and i cant get it to take any of them. Or even a complete different way to input text into Results-Text that would allow for tidy multiline use. Sidenote: since im using -Text and System::Convert::ToString in VC, would this code be considered just c++ or .net or CLI? to tighten my searches.

• How do i use shortcuts/lnk on file servers?

  without using a database i wanted a file to point to the newest revision of a file. Someone suggested using a shortcut. Knowing i can rewrite file.ext to file.ext.lnk i thought it was a great idea. Then i tried it, my server (VS 2010rc) serves the shortcut rather then the file. Not what i wanted... How do i serve the file the shortcut is pointing to? NOTE: I am planing to use windows 2008 as my server so a solution should work on that as well. The OS i am running is windows 7.

  The Overview I am working on a Continuous Integration build of a MFC appliction via CruiseControl.net and VS2010. When building my .sln, a "Visual Studio" CCNet task (<devenv/>) works, but a simple MSBuild wrapper script (see below) run via the CCNet <msbuild/> task fails with errors like: error RC1015: cannot open include file 'winres.h'.. error C1083: Cannot open include file: 'afxwin.h': No such file or directory error C1083: Cannot open include file: 'afx.h': No such file or directory The Question How can I adjust the build environment of my msbuild wrapper so that the application builds correctly? (Pretty clearly the MFC paths aren't right for the msbuild environment, but how do i fix it for MSBuild+VS2010+MFC+CCNet?) Background Details We have successfully upgraded an MFC application (.exe with some MFC extension .dlls) to Visual Studio 2010 and can compile the application without issue on developer machines. Now I am working on compiling the application on the CI server environment I did a full installation of VS2010 (Professional) on the build server. In this way, I knew everything I needed would be on the machine (one way or another) and that this would be consistent with developer machines. VS2010 is correctly installed on the CI server, and the devenv task works as expected I now have a wrapper MSBuild script that does some extended version processing and then builds the .sln for the application via an MSBuild task. This wrapper script is run via CCNet's MSBuild task and fails with the above mentioned errors The Simple MSBuild Wrapper <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <Project ToolsVersion="4.0" DefaultTargets="Build" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/developer/msbuild/2003"> <Target Name="Build"> <!-- Doing some versioning stuff here--> <MSBuild Projects="target.sln" Properties="Configuration=ReleaseUnicode;Platform=Any CPU;..." /> </Target> </Project> My Assumptions This seems to be a missing/wrong configuration of include paths to standard header resources of the MFC persuasion I should be able to coerce the MSBuild environment to consider the relevant resource files from my VS2010 install and have this approach work. Given the vs2010 msbuild support for visual c++ projects (.vcxproj), shouldn't msbuilding a solution be pretty close to compiling via visual studio? But how do I do that? Am I setting Environment variables? Registry settings? I can see how one can inject additional directories in some cases, but this seems to need a more systemic configuration at the compiler defaults level. Update 1 This appears to only ever happen in two cases: resource compilation (rc.exe), and precompiled header (stdafx.h) compilation, and only for certain projects? I was thinking it was across the board, but indeed it appears only to be in these cases. I guess I will keep digging and hope someone has some insight they would be willing to share...

• What’s the status of CAT.NET?

  I’m trying to find Microsoft CAT.NET for VS2010 and it looks like there was a beta of their 2.0 version but every link to it in Microsoft Connect is now dead. The compile is a success but it does not catch the view compilation errors. I have Vs2010 ultimate, vs 2008 developer+database edition on this machine. So either it compiles ignoring the errors with some combinations of the fixes I've tried, or it errors with Error 410 It is an error to use a section registered as allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' beyond application level. • Difficulties getting GraphViz working as a library in C++

  Am working on a program that will allow a graph of nodes to be displayed and then updated visually as the nodes themselves are updated. I am fairly new to Visual Studio 2010 and am following the GraphViz guide located at http://www.graphviz.org/pdf/libguide.pdf in order to get GraphViz working as a library. • Rtti accessing fields and properties in complex data structures

  As already discussed in Rtti data manipulation and consistency in Delphi 2010 a consistency between the original data and rtti values can be reached by accessing members by using a pair of TRttiField and an instance pointer. This would be very easy in case of a simple class with only basic member types (like e.g. integers or strings). But what if we have structured field types? Here is an example: TIntArray = array [0..1] of Integer; TPointArray = array [0..1] of Point; TExampleClass = class private FPoint : TPoint; FAnotherClass : TAnotherClass; FIntArray : TIntArray; FPointArray : TPointArray; public property Point : TPoint read FPoint write FPoint; //.... and so on end; For an easy access of Members I want to buil a tree of member-nodes, which provides an interface for getting and setting values, getting attributes, serializing/deserializing values and so on. TMemberNode = class private FMember : TRttiMember; FParent : TMemberNode; FInstance : Pointer; public property Value : TValue read GetValue write SetValue; //uses FInstance end; So the most important thing is getting/setting the values, which is done - as stated before - by using the GetValue and SetValue functions of TRttiField. So what is the Instance for FPoint members? Let's say Parent is the Node for TExample class, where the instance is known and the member is a field, then Instance would be: FInstance := Pointer (Integer (Parent.Instance) + TRttiField (FMember).Offset); But what if I want to know the Instance for a record property? There is no offset in this case. So is there a better solution to get a pointer to the data? For the FAnotherClass member, the Instance would be: FInstance := Parent.Value.AsObject; So far the solution works, and data manipulation can be done by using rtti or the original types, without losing information. But things get harder, when working with arrays. Especially the second array of Points. How can I get the instance for the members of points in this case?

• web.config transforms not being applied on either publish or build installation package

  Today I started playing with the web.config transforms in VS 2010. To begin with, I attempted the same hello world example that features in a lot of the blog posts on this topic - updating a connection string. I created the minimal example shown below (and similar to the one found in this blog). The problem is that whenever I do a right-click - "Publish", or a right-click - "Build Deployment Package" on the .csproj file, I'm not getting the correct output. Rather than a transformed web.config, I'm getting no web.config, and instead the two transform files are included. What am I doing wrong? Any help gratefully received! • Creating .lib files in CUDA Toolkit 5

  I am taking my first faltering steps with CUDA Toolkit 5.0 RC using VS2010. Separate compilation has me confused. I tried to set up a project as a Static Library (.lib), but when I try to build it, it does not create a device-link.obj and I don't understand why. For instance, there are 2 files: A caller function that uses a function f #include "thrust\host_vector.h" #include "thrust\device_vector.h" using namespace thrust::placeholders; extern __device__ double f(double x); struct f_func { __device__ double operator()(const double& x) const { return f(x); } }; void test(const int len, double * data, double * res) { thrust::device_vector<double> d_data(data, data + len); thrust::transform(d_data.begin(), d_data.end(), d_data.begin(), f_func()); thrust::copy(d_data.begin(),d_data.end(), res); } And a library file that defines f __device__ double f(double x) { return x+2.0; } If I set the option generate relocatable device code to No, the first file will not compile due to unresolved extern function f. If I set it to -rdc, it will compile, but does not produce a device-link.obj file and so the linker fails. If I put the definition of f into the first file and delete the second it builds successfully, but now it isn't separate compilation anymore. How can I build a static library like this with separate source files? [Updated here] I called the first caller file "caller.cu" and the second "libfn.cu".   Yesterday I tried to deploy a Business Data Connectivity Model project created in Visual Studio 2010 to my SharePoint 2010 test server (all RTM versions), but during the deployment of the solution, SharePoint threw my following error: Add Solution:  Adding solution 'BCSDemo2.wsp'...  Deploying solution 'BCSDemo2.wsp'...Error occurred in deployment step 'Add Solution': The default web application could not be determined. Set the SiteUrl property in feature BCSDemo2_Feature1 to the URL of the desired site and retry activation.Parameter name: properties A little bit of searching on the internet taught me that I was not the only one having this issue, actually Paul Andrew describes how to solve it in this post. Although Paul describes what to do, his explanation is not, let’s say, very elaborate. :-) So let’s describe the steps a little bit more in detail: Create a new Business Data Connectivity Model project in Visual Studio 2010 and (optionally) implement all your code, change the model etc. When you try to deploy you get the error mentioned above. To fix it, in the Solution Explorer, navigate to and open the Feature1.Template.xml file (the name could be different if you decided to give your feature a different name of course). Add the following XML in the Feature element that’s already there (replace the Value with the URL of your site of course):  <Properties>    <Property Key='SiteUrl' Value='http://spf.u2ucourse.com'/>  </Properties>The resulting XML should look like:<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?><Feature xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/sharepoint/">  <Properties>    <Property Key='SiteUrl' Value='http://spf.u2ucourse.com'/>  </Properties></Feature> Deploy the solution, now without any issues. :-) What happens now, is that when Visual Studio creates the SharePoint Solution (the WSP file), it will use the Feature template XML to generate the Feature manifest, which will now include the missing property.

The following is an example to explain the problem. • MegaCli newly created disk doesn't appear under /dev/sdX

  After having successfully added 2 new disks in a new RAID virtual drive (background initialization done), I would have exepected it to appear under /dev/sdh but it's not there (so, unusable). The system is running a CentOS 5.2 64 bits, HAL and udev daemons are running, not records of any sdh apparition under the messsage log file or in dmesg, only MegaCli do see that virtual drive. • WordPress mod_rewrite redirect specific folders

  As a new user, I'm not allowed to post more than two hyperlinks here. So I have added a space after every http (ignore them and read as full URLs). System: Debian Etch, Apache 2.2 I have a WordPress instance with multiple blogs. I would like to redirect some of the folders based on the year and month, while leaving other folders go to the actual locations. Example: I have archives for a few years, like 2010, 2011 and 2012: http ://mydomain.com/wordpress/myblog/2010/02 http ://mydomain.com/wordpress/myblog/2011/01 http ://mydomain.com/wordpress/myblog/2012/01 I would like to redirect all 2010 and 2011 posts to another blog with the same folder structure: http ://mydomain.com/wordpress/myotherblog/2010/02 http ://mydomain.com/wordpress/myotherblog/2011/01 and so on. I would like to have 2012 and beyond to go to the actual site (http ://mydomain.com/wordpress/myblog/2012/01). I tried mod_rewrite with the following, one rule at a time to test redirection for just one year (and to expand later for other years), and none of them worked! * RewriteEngine is already on since there are some default WordPress rewrites. * RewriteBase is set to http://mydomain.com/wordpress/ . * I put my rule before all the other default WordPress rules are processed. Didn't work solution #1 RedirectMatch 301 /myblog/2010/(.*) /myotherblog/2010/$1 Didn't work solution #2 RewriteRule /myblog/2010/(.*) http ://mydomain.com/myotherblog/2010/$1 [R=301] Didn't work solution #3 RedirectPermanent /myblog/2010/(.*) http ://mydomain.com/myotherblog/2010/$1 I've also tried the above rules with and without a fully qualified URL for the new location. The rewrite log, with log level set to 9, did not provide any useful information. It shows that it looks at the pattern specified against the URL (as mentioned in the rule), but finally what happens is a passthrough to http ://mydomain.com/myblog/ for all URLs or a 500 Internal Server Error. Any ideas on where I could be going wrong or any alternative solutions?

• How do I use Fluent NHibernate with .NET 4.0?

  I want to learn to use Fluent NHibernate, and I'm working in VS2010 Beta2, compiling against .NET 4, but I'm experiencing some problems. Summary My main problem (at the moment) is that the namespace FluentNHibernate isn't available even though I've imported all the .dll assemblies mentioned in this guide. This is what I've done: 1. I downloaded the Fluent NHibernate source from here, extracted the .zip and opened the solution in VS. A dialog asked me if I wanted to convert the solution to a VS2010 solution, so I did. 2. I then went into each project's properties and configured all of them to compile for .NET 4, and built the entire solution. 3. I copied all the .dll files from /bin/Debug/ in the FluentNHibernate to a new folder on my local hard drive. 4. In my example project, I referenced FluentNHibernate.dll and NHibernate.dll from the new folder. This is my problem: If I right-click on FluentNHibernate in the References list and select "View in Object Browser...", it shows up correctly. Now, when I try to create a mapping class, I can't import FluentNHibernate. This code: using FluentNHibernate.Mapping; namespace FluentNHExample.Mappings { } generates an error on the using statement, saying The type or namespace 'FluentNHibernate' could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?). The FluentNHibernate assembly is still in the list of References of my project, but if I try to browse the assembly in Object Browser again, it can't be found. What is causing this?

  The following C++ library was successfully compiled in VS2008 http://sourceforge.net/projects/xmlrpcc4win/files/xmlrpcc4win/XmlRpcC4Win1.0.8.zip/download When I open it in VS2010, it goes through the conversion wizard process without any errors. • VS2010 Assembly Load Error

  I am getting the following error when I try to build an ASP.NET 4 project in Visual Studio 2010: "Could not load file or assembly 'file:///C:\Dev\project\trunk\bin\Elmah.dll' or one of its dependencies. Operation is not supported. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131515)". I have verified that the dll does, in fact, exist, and is getting copied to the bin folder correctly. I have also tried removing and then re-adding the reference to the project. The build only fails when I switch the Solution Configuration to "Release". It does not fail when the Solution Configuration is set to "Debug". • Delphi: Using Enumerators to filter TList<T: class> by class type?

  Okay, this might be confusing. What I'm trying to do is use an enumerator to only return certain items in a generic list based on class type. If I comment out the TCircle loop, then I get a similar error about TSquare. If I comment the TSquare loop out as well, the code compiles and works. Well, it works in the sense that it enumerates every object since they all descend from TShape. The strange thing is that the line number that the compiler indicates is 2 lines beyond the end of my file. In my demo project, it indicated line 177, but there's only 175 lines. Is there any way to make this work? I'd like to be able to assign to Circle directly without going through any typecasts or checking in my for loop itself.
