I went to the app’s page on the app store where I saw this: One of my Twitter peeps from Winnipeg, Len, commented that he was able to install it from the website. So I went back and noticed that there’s a “Download and Install Manually” link towards the bottom of the page, which will let you download the .XAP file directly. So I emailed myself the link, opened it on my phone, and voila – Vine is now installed! What’s the point of limiting apps by region if we can just manually download and install the file anyway? • Why can't the Unity panel be hidden?

  I am a light Linux user. I have Natty installed on my netbook and used to have it dual-booted on my Windows 7 PC. After a total refresh of my notebook off came Ubuntu and I'm back to basics over there. But HERE (I'm running Natty on a HP-Mini) I've decided to poke around a bit to get the best user experience on this little thing. I really like the Unity interface but really hate the static Unity Panel. I have no clue why it's even necessary to be on globally. After all, in the classic interface, both panels can autohide or get filed aside with buttons on either side of the bar. On a 10" screen, real estate is at a premium. What intrinsic purpose does the static unity panel hold for the OS? There has to be a great reason for this thing to HAVE to be here. It ONLY goes away in fullscreen apps and I can't use everything fullscreen Why can the unity panel not be hidden?

• How to remove space between application and workspace switcher on Unity launcher?

  I just downloaded Ubuntu 11.10 for the first time. I really enjoy the launcher on the left hand side but have a problem. After playing around with adding applications in it, there are large spaces from the last application to workspace switcher. If I try to drag a new application into the launcher everything moves farther down, instead of filling in the space in between apps. When I right click on the launcher in a blank spot it reads "drop to add application." I'm looking for a way to have all of the applications close together with no spaces, like when I first downloaded Ubuntu.

The topics were very good: Tou.tv and Flickr apps development retro feedback from the teams who wrote them. In the first meeting, RunAtServer discussed how they built the Tou.tv WP7 app for Radio-Canada.  In the second meeting, nVentive discussed how they built the WP7 and Slate clients for Flickr. • How can I refactor a code base while others rapidly commit to it?

  I'm on a private project that eventually will become open source. We have a few team members, talented enough with the technologies to build apps, but not dedicated developers who can write clean/beautiful and most importantly long-term maintainable code. I've set out to refactor the code base, but it's a bit unwieldy as someone in the team out in another country I'm not in regular contact with could be updating this totally separate thing. I know one solution is to communicate rapidly or adopt better PM practices, but we're just not that big yet. I just want to clean up the code and merge nicely into what he has updated. Would a branch be a suitable plan? A best-effort-merge? Something else?

• Remove dropped shadown in nemo previews

  I recently started using Nemo because Nautilus has gotten pretty terrible. I quite like it, but one thing is still bugging me: the shadow of the preview of every image and video file (see below). I've been looking around in the /usr/share/themes/Ambiance/gtk-3.0/apps/nemo.css file but couldn't figure out how to get rid of that shadow. In Nautilus you get a border instead of a shadow, so surely something is different. I just can't figure out what. Any ideas?

  I am a JavaScript developer/architect who, like many developers these days, did not come from a Computer Science background (I studied Philosophy at a liberal arts college), but instead learned development by actually building applications, and by reading books explaining language grammars, design patterns, and best practices. I have never felt that my ignorance of CS concepts has hurt my ability to build great apps or find employment. Recently, however, I have felt the itch to grow in this direction. Do you have any suggestions for some good introductory CS resources/books? I know that Computer Science is a huge field and my question is very general, but I am looking for a 101-type survey of the high-level concepts, from which I can branch off into more specific areas of study. • Alt + Tab window switcher preview stoped working

  It just stopped working. After I boot Ubuntu it does not work. When I run unity --replace it works again, but after restart problem occurs again. And that happens on every reboot. I have some startup apps, but I don't think that can be the problem. Any idea? UPDATE: Looks like I had some problems with firefox causing Alt+Tab to stop working. After reinstalling firefox and computer restart it works.

• Ubuntu won't boot and it is stuck on the loading screen

  I had just installed it as dual boot 2 days ago, and everything was fine. I was installing some programs (i think it was Play On Linux) and I don't think the install was 100% done when the battery died. Since then it won't boot into Ubuntu; it just stays at the loading screen. I did make separate partitions for boot root home and swap. Can anyone help me get it back and running again? Even if I have to reinstall it. I just don't want to go back through getting all those apps. I'm running Ubuntu 12.10 64bit on a Acer Aspire 5750 core i3 cpu 4gb ram

If you see a "Not found" message, Ubuntu Software Center is working in the background to update the list of available apps. When I click on a link, the software centre opens and it says There isn’t a software package called “swordandsworcery” in your current software sources. I have waited for about 30 minutes now. I have also executed sudo apt-get update & restarted software centre to no avail. Do I keep waiting?

  I owned two website. Let's say as example www.first.com and www.second.com. I have two apps in Google chrome-store whose app URL is: app1 URL = www.first.com/currency_converter.php app2 URL = www.first.com/currency_converter.php respectively. Currently if user lunch/click on first app URL then I am forwarding them to my first website homepage (www.first.com), where I have AdSense code with currency converter app. In this way I am generating Google ad impression and traffic for my first website (i.e www.first.com). So is this valid way? Does I am violating any Google AdSense rule? Please provide your reply or suggestions. • Benefits of using the same language for client and server?

  I'm looking at architecture solutions for a mobile project that will have a web-service/app in addition to native apps. I've been looking at various libraries, frameworks, and stacks like jqm, backbone, parse, and meteor. Meteor, sort of an "open stack package framework", is tightly bound with node.js. There is a lot of talk about the benefits of using the same language both client and server side, and I'm not getting it. I could understand if you want to mirror the entire state of a web application on both client and server but struggling to find other wins... Workflow efficiency? I'm trying to understand why client/server language parity is considered to be a holy grail, any explicit examples or links would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

• How to fix Fullscreen focus error in Unity?

  Recently, I've been experiencing an error with programs that have a fullscreen mode with low resolution (80xx600 and below) in Unity. The problem isn't valid in gnomeshell. Whenever I launch an application, unity would enlarge the screen more than it should be and would only show me the upper left corner of the screen (I only see a magnified quarter of the screen). At first I thought that it was an issue related to wine but I later found out that native applications (such as world of goo) are affected as well. Apps that taken on the full screen but have a larger resolution don't face such an issue. Is it possible to get this fixed manually? Or do I have to wait for updates?

  We have one Facebook fan page and two personal profiles that could be sending traffic and then there are the many facebook pages of friends etc. I am also running an ad campaign from my FB account for my husband's business which has a link from his personal FB profile and his fan page. On Google analytics for his business we get the following referring sites from Facebook: /ajax/emu/end.php which is listed under facebook.com / referral /l.php (which is a not-found page at FB /ajax/emu/end.php which is listed under apps.facebook.com Both of the working links send me to the home page of my profile, which is the account I am working from to create and review the FB ad campaign that we are running. Is this info telling me any useful information at all? Is there a best practice for tracking and analyzing Facebook traffic that is a lot more granular? thanks!

• Creating your own computer! [closed]

  I recently found this article on a guy that built his own computer. It's just a bunch of wire (as far as I can tell any way) and I was just wondering what would I have to learn/read/do to make such a thing (or at least to have a really basic understanding of what he did). He also made his own operating system, which I find really impressive. I know it will take a while and I am in no hurry. Note: I am a web programmer and also have done some desktop apps (a few years ago).
