• Where Twitter Stands Heading Into 2013

  As Twitter continued throughout 2012 to be a stage on which global politics and culture played itself out, the company itself underwent some adjustments that give us a good indication of what users and brands can expect from the platform in 2013. The power of the network did anything but fade. Celebrities continued to use it to connect one-on-one. Even the Pope signed on this year. It continued to fuel revolutions. It played an exponentially large factor in this US Presidential election. And around the world, the freedom to speak was challenged as users were fired, sued, sometimes even jailed for their tweets. Expect more of the same in 2013, as Twitter has entrenched itself, for individuals, causes and brands, as the fastest, easiest, most efficient way to message the masses so some measure of impact can come from it. It’s changed everything, and it’s not finished. These fun facts reveal the position of strength with which Twitter enters 2013: It now generates a billion tweets every 2.5 days It has 500 million+ users The average Twitter user has tweeted 307 times 32% of everyone using the Internet uses Twitter It’s expected to bring in $540 million in ad revenue by 2014 11 new accounts are created every second High-level Executive Summary: people love it, people use it, and they’re going to keep loving and using it. Whether or not outside developers love it is a different matter. 2012 marked a shift from welcoming the third party support that played at least some role in Twitter being so warmly embraced, to discouraging anything that replicates what Twitter can do itself…or plans to do itself. It’s not the open playground it once was. Now Twitter must spend 2013 proving it can innovate in-house and keep us just as entranced. Likewise, Twitter is distancing itself from Facebook. Images from the #1 platform’s Instagram don’t work on Twitter anymore, and Twitter’s rolling out their own photo filter product. Where the two have lived in a “plenty of room for everybody” symbiosis up to now, 2013 could see the giants ramping up a full-on rivalry. Twitter is exhibiting a deliberate strategy. Updates have centered on more visually appealing search results, and making finding and sharing content easier. Deals have been cut with some media entities so their content stands out. CEO Dick Costolo has said tweets aren’t the attraction, they’re what leads you to content. Twitter aims to be a key distributor of media and info. Add the addition of former News Corp. President Peter Chernin to the board, and their hashtag landing page experience for events, and their media behemoth ambitions get pretty clear. There are challenges ahead and Costolo has also laid those out; entry into China, figuring out how to have Twitter deliver both comprehensive and relevant, targeted experiences, and the visualization of big data. What does this mean for corporations? They can expect a more media-rich evolution and growing emphases on imagery. They can expect more opportunities to create great media content and leverage Twitter for its distribution. And they can expect new ways to surface in searches. Are brands diving in? 56% of customer tweets to companies get completely and totally ignored. Ugh. A study Twitter recently conducted with Compete shows people who see tweets from retailers are more likely to buy a product. And, the more retailer tweets they see, the more likely they are to purchase on the retail site. As more of those tweets point to engaging media content from the brand, the results should get even better. Twitter appears ready for 2013. We collaborated with OnStar’s Emergency Strategy and Outreach expert, Jeff Joyner ,on how Onstar uses Google Earth Visualization, NAVTEQ data and Oracle Database to deliver fast, accurate emergency services to its customers. In the next webinar in our 2012 series, Oracle partner TARGUSinfo showcased how to build a robust, scalable and secure customer relationship management systems – with built-in mapping and spatial analysis, and deployed in the cloud. This is a very cool system using all Oracle technologies including Oracle Database and Fusion Middleware MapViewer. Attendees learned how to gather market insight, score prospects and customers and perform location analysis. The replay is available here. Our final webinar of the year focused on using Oracle Business Intelligence tools, along with Oracle Spatial and Graph to perform location-aware predictive analysis. • SPARC Solaris Momentum

  Following up on the Oracle Solaris 11.2 launch on April 29th, if you were able to watch the launch event, you saw Mark Hurd state that Oracle will be No. 1 in high-end computing systems "in a reasonable time frame”.  "This is not a 3-year vision," he continued.Well, According to IDC's latest 1QCY14 Tracker, Oracle has regained the #1 UNIX Shipments Marketshare! • Customers Deploying Sun Oracle Database Machine

  Philippine Savings Bank (PS Bank) recently deployed the Sun Oracle Database Machine to underpin its enterprise-wide analytics platform. Now, the response times for queries and requests that used to take from three hours to several days is completed in less than one minute with near real-time updates. Read the press release. EFU General Insurance also announced this week that they have deployed the Sun Oracle Database Machine. With Oracle, EFU will be able to open more sales channels via the Web and facilitate integration with other companies. As a result, more quality services can be offered to its customers via the Web because of the more agile and reliable IT infrastructure. • SSMS Tools Pack 2.5.3 is out with bug fixes and improved licensing

  Licensing for SSMS Tools Pack 2.5 has been quite a hit and I received some awesome feedback. The version 2.5.3 contains a few bug fixes and desired licensing improvements. Changes include more licensing options, prices in Euros because of book keeping reasons (don't you just love those :)) and generally easier purchase and licensing process for users. Licensing now offers four options: Per machine license. (€25) Perfect if you do all your work from a single machine. Plus one OS reinstall activation. Personal license (€75) Up to 4 machine activations. Plus 2 OS reinstall activations and any number of virtual machine activations. Team license (€240) Up to 10 machine activations. Plus 4 OS reinstall activations and any number of virtual machine activations. Enterprise license (€350+) For more than 10 machine activations any number of virtual machine activations. 30 days license. Time based demo license bound to a machine. • Connecting to wireless networks from command line

  I need to write a shell script which connects to one of the two available wi-fi connections. One is a un secure connection and the other is secure connection. My question has 2 parts- 1.How to connect to the un-secure (un-encrypted and no password required) connection from command line (or by executing a shell script) when I'm connected to the secure connection? I followed the steps in http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-troubleshoot-wireless-network-connection-in-ubuntu.html for in-secure connection. I put all the commands in a script and executed it (I made sure that interface name and essid are correct) - sudo dhclient -r wlan0 - sudo ifconfig wlan0 up - sudo iwconfig wlan0 essid "UAPublic" - sudo iwconfig wlan0 mode Managed - sudo dhclient wlan0 But nothing happens - I'm not disconnected from the current network and connected to the new one 2.When I want to connect to the secure wi-fi network, I understand from http://askubuntu.com/a/138476/70665 that I need to use wpa_supplicant. But I enter a lot of details in the interface when I connect via UI security : wpa and wpa2 enterprise Authentication : PEAP CA certificate : Equifax... PEAP version : automatic inner authentication : MSCHAPv2 username : password : How to use wpa_supplicant to mention all these details in the command line? The conf file network={ ssid="ssid_name" psk="password" } doesn't work for me.

• Which forum software has the most advanced community/GetSatisfaction type features?

  I need to assemble a GetSatisfaction/Lithium/Jive type support forum/community. The first is not available in the desired language and the last two are priced for the enterprise market. I did research some other options (open source or SaaS) but they all seem to be either: kind of dead (open source options) too focused in gathering ideas/feedback (uservoice) strictly support without the community/voting features (zendesk) I need an open forum (people powered support/UGC with community/voting features). Therefore I will have to do some of the work on my own. I want to piece things (plugins/mods/etc) on top of a standard forum platform to give it the features I need. For this purpose, I want to use a mature product with widespread userbase, active community and lots of plugin options. I believe most will agree that my options therefore are: vBulletin phpBB SMF Here are the questions: Which one of the three above offers the easier path towards the desired goal? Which one of the three above has the most advanced features related to the desired goal? Of course I dont expect anyone to know these answers cut and dry. I am hoping to hear some experiences and see some examples. Also, it would be great if both those questions had the same answer, but I am not going to get my hopes up... PS: I wish I could add the tags "phpbb" and "smf" ;)

  Yesterday I blogged about AWS AMIs and Oracle VM templates. These are great mechanisms to stand up an initial cloud environment. However, they don't provide the capability to manage, provision and update an environment once it is up and running. This is where AWS Cloud Formations and Oracle Virtual Assembly Builder comes into play. In a way, these tools/frameworks pick up where AMIs and VM templates leave off. Once again, there a similar offers from AWS and Oracle that compliant and also overlap with each other. Let's start by looking at the definitions: AWS CloudFormation gives developers and systems administrators an easy way to create and manage a collection of related AWS resources, provisioning and updating them in an orderly and predictable fashion. • Need advice for approach for a web-based app that loads excel worksheet but exposes only the charts

  I'm looking for suggestions on the Visual Studio approach to take for a web application that is in the conceptual stage. My environment has a lot of tools: Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard 64bit Visual Studio 2010 Professional Edition Sharepoint 2010 Server Enterprise Edition SQL Server 2008 R2 Office 2010 Professional I know I will need this app to retrieve data from a database (or a web service - not sure exactly at this point). The data needs to be placed in an Excel workbook dynamically. The app will need to have a nice user interface (standard web controls - perhaps with some Javascript effects). The Excel ribbon and worksheet grid will need to be hidden. Some web control(s) will cause the Excel chart(s) to be rendered. I am thinking this sounds like Visual Studio Tools for Office (VSTO) so as to leverage .Net and hide Excel. Can you offer suggestions regarding: One ASP.Net Web App Project One Class Library Project for Excel or perhaps which one of the several different Excel 2010 project types (addin, template, document) Would Excel Services for Sharepoint be useful (or required) ? I am feeling a little overwhelmed with so many choices at this early stage of conceptualizing the app. Can you suggest some ideas for this sort of thing? Also, I am a bit more experienced with C# but I've read VB.Net is better for work with the Excel object model. What are general advises with regard to tool choice and overall approach tradeoffs?

• Oracle R Distribution 2-13.2 Update Available

  Oracle has released an update to the Oracle R Distribution, an Oracle-supported distribution of open source R. Oracle R Distribution 2-13.2 now contains the ability to dynamically link the following libraries on both Windows and Linux: The Intel Math Kernel Library (MKL) on Intel chips The AMD Core Math Library (ACML) on AMD chips To take advantage of the performance enhancements provided by Intel MKL or AMD ACML in Oracle R Distribution, simply add the MKL or ACML shared library directory to the LD_LIBRARY_PATH system environment variable. This automatically enables MKL or ACML to make use of all available processors, vastly speeding up linear algebra computations and eliminating the need to recompile R.  Even on a single core, the optimized algorithms in the Intel MKL libraries are faster than using R's standard BLAS library. Open-source R is linked to NetLib's BLAS libraries, but they are not multi-threaded and only use one core. While R's internal BLAS are efficient for most computations, it's possible to recompile R to link to a different, multi-threaded BLAS library to improve performance on eligible calculations. Compiling and linking to R yourself can be involved, but for many, the significantly improved calculation speed justifies the effort. Oracle R Distribution notably simplifies the process of using external math libraries by enabling R to auto-load MKL or ACML. For R commands that don't link to BLAS code, taking advantage of database parallelism using embedded R execution in Oracle R Enterprise is the route to improved performance. • A (slight) Change of Focus

  When I started this blog in September 2009 I was working as a BizTalk developer for a financial institution based in the South West of England.  At the time I was developing using BizTalk Server 2004 and intended to use my blog to collate and share any useful information and experiences that I had using this version of BizTalk (and occasionally other technologies) in an effort to bring together as many useful details as I could in one place. Since then my circumstances have changed and I am no longer working in the financial industry using BizTalk 2004.  Instead I have recently started a new post in the logistics industry, in the North of England, as "IT Integration Manager".  The company I now work for has identified a need to boost their middleware/integration platform and have chosen BizTalk Server 2009 as their platform of choice; this is where I come in. To start with my role is to provide the expertise with BizTalk that they currently lack, design and direct the initial BizTalk 2009 implementation and act as lead developer on all pending BizTalk projects.  Following this it is my hope that we will be able to build on the initial BizTalk "proof of concept" and eventually implement a fully robust enterprise level BizTalk 2009 environment. As such, this blog is going to see a shift in focus from BizTalk 2004 to BizTalk 2009 and at least initially is likely to include posts on the design and installation of our BizTalk environment - assuming of course that I have the time to write them! The last post I made was the start of a chapter by chapter look at the book SOA Patterns with BizTalk Server 2009.  Due to my change of job I am currently "paused" half way through this book, and my lack of posts on the subject are directly as a result of the job move and the pending relocation of my family.  I am hoping to write about my overall opinion of this book sometime soon; so far it certainly looks like it will be a positive one.
