  • What Would You Consider Best Practice Workflow Tools For Web Application (PHP) Development?

    I'm really hoping somebody with more experience can edit the question as per my examples of answers: • using version control • test driven development • debugging code (xdebug for php) • use of UML diagrams • use of OOP for maintainable, reusable code • use of frameworks (like Zend Framework for php) for rapid application development Anything else or an elaboration of what I mentioned above? Basically, I'm in the middle of forming a team of developers (I'm a developer myself) and I'd like some advice on how professional programmers/designers etc should work together and what standards/paradigms they should use. Also, if anybody has any books or links on the subject I'd welcome that!   • What are the benefits vs costs of comment annotation in PHP?

    I have just started working with symfony2 and have run across comment annotations. Although comment annotation is not an inherent part of PHP, symfony2 adds support for this feature. My understanding of commenting is that it should make the code more intelligible to the human. The computer shouldn't care what is in comments. What benefits come from doing this type of annotation versus just putting a command in the normal PHP code? ie- /** * @Route("/{id}") * @Method("GET") * @ParamConverter("post", class="SensioBlogBundle:Post") * @Template("SensioBlogBundle:Annot:post.html.twig", vars={"post"}) * @Cache(smaxage="15") */ public function showAction(Post $post) { }

  • Develop JavaScript API to expose web services [closed]

    We are planning to develop a JavaScript API to expose some of our J2EE based services. We are doing this keeping Google Maps API in mind. Can someone please suggested where we should start and the approaches that we need to follow to create a useful and extensible JavaScript API? These are the things that we are considering to achieve. It should be very simple for others to use our API. We feel Google Maps API is like that. We should be able to release the updates of the APIs without affecting the existing implementations. We should have enough security measures so that not all can use these services. Please suggest us if there are any books that can guide us through. Any suggestion will be greatly helpful for us.   • How should I handle a redirect to an identity provider during a web api data request

    Scenario I have a single-page web app consisting purely of html, css, and javascript. After initial load and during use, it updates various views with data from one or more RESTful apis via ajax calls. The api calls return data in a json format. Each web api may be hosted on independent domains. Question During the ajax callout, if my authorization token is not deemed valid by the web api, the web api will redirect me (302) to the identity provider for that particular api. Since this is an ajax callout for data and not necessarily for display, i need to find a way to display the identity provider's authentication page. It seems that I should trap that redirect, and open up another view to display the identity provider's login page. Once the oauth series of redirects is complete, i need to grab the token and retrigger my ajax data call with the token attached. Is this a valid approach, and if so are there any examples showing the ajax handling of the redirects?

    I was reading some articles and discussions on the use of static methods on objects and it struck me how much the views differ. Someone say that using static methods is an advantage. Someone says that use is a big mistake. I wonder how is it? My question is when to use static methods and when not? I would like to hear answers from experts in this field (PHP OOP). This is because I know how it really is. The following code should be analogous.   • How to store and update data table on client side (iOS MMO)

    Currently i'm developing an iOS MMO game with cocos2d-x, that game depends on many data tables(excel file) given by the designers. These tables contain data like how much gold/crystal will be cost when upgrade a building(barracks, laboratory etc..). We have about 10 tables, each have about 50 rows of data. My question is how to store those tables on client side and how to update them once they have been modified on server side? My opinion: use Sqlite to store data on client side, the server will parse the excel files and send the data to client with JSON format, then the client parse the JOSN string and save it to Sqlite file. Is there any better method? I find that some game stores csv files on client side, how do they update the files? Could server send a whole file directly to client?

  • How do I install PHP 5.4.8 on a Win XP workstation?

    I am trying to create a MediaWiki site on my WinXP workstation, and need to install PHP 5.4.8. I have downloaded and unpacked the binaries for PHP, but the install instructions are telling me to "Run the MSI installer and follow the instructions provided by the installation wizard." Unfortunately there is no MSI file provided in the package! Am I missing something? Besides a clue, I mean. Edited to add: I will try to make this clear. I am not going to be able to work with Apache.

I'm a novice php programmer, so while my application seems to work well, there may be inefficiencies or security vulnerabilities. I feel that I should have someone look over my code before making the application publicly available, but I'm hesitant to just post it online because it handles some rather sensitive things.   • Strange issue with Wordpress sites, is it PHP Memory?

    This has happened to me twice with the same host and I want to know the real cause. I have multiple wordpress sites hosted on a shared server. One day when I attempt to visit any of the sites, the webpage simply downloads the index.php file. It happens on all wordpress sites but not on static sites hosted there. I understand this is a php issue on the server, but what could be happening specifically? the only thing I could find when searching is something to do with memory limits. Is this common? Should I be worried about this host?

  • Is the php method md5() secure? Can it be used for passwords? [migrated]

    So executing a php script causes the form values to be sent to the server, and then they are processed. If you want to store a password in your db than you want it to be a cryptographic hash(so your client side is secure, can you generate an md5 using php securely( without submitting the user:password pair in the clear), or is there an alternative standard method of doing this, without having the unecrypted pasword leaving the clients machine? Sorry if this is a stupid question I'm kind of new at this. I think this can be done somehow using https, and on that note if a site's login page does not use https, does that mean that while the databse storage is secure, the transportation is not?

    My colleague uses the Binary Calculator functions in bandwidth calculations; as much as terrabytes, and with percentage splitting on allocation. His usage of these functions appears correct in order not to lose a byte; although he seems to be using them now for everything. The manual only says: For arbitrary precision mathematics PHP offers the Binary Calculator which supports numbers of any size and precision, represented as strings. How much is any size? Is it really necessary? How big is the default float in PHP? Are there any good advice regarding this or things to keep in mind?

  • PHP error log does not display script names nor does it display the errors' line numbers [migrated]

    I think the title is self-explanatory, and my Google-fu isn't bringing up anything useful. I'm working on a new host, and my php error log only displays the error itself, not which script is the offender, nor which line number the error is occurring on. Makes it a tad difficult to debug, especially since there's only 1 error in the script. More info: I'm not using a custom error handler that I'm aware of. This is a standard Wordpress install. The error was [27-Aug-2012 19:22:36 UTC] PHP NOTICE: Trying to get property of non-object. Just no script name or line number in the error I found that Wordpress' error logging contained the information to debug the problem, but that doesn't explain why the log didn't contain line number or script.

    PHP soap client in attempting to interact with a .NET soap server results in the following error: [soap:Receiver] Server was unable to process request. --- Invalid length for a Base-64 char array. $credentials = array( 'RequestorUID'=> 'xxxx', 'RequestorPassword'=> 'xxxx' ); $param = array('pmPropertyManagerID'=>'xxxx'); $client->GetPropertyStatus($credentials, $param); GetPropertyStatus take two arguments, a credentials object - which works correctly as other functions that only require credentials are executed correctly. The second argument is defineds as a string and I have attempted to input it directly as a string and base64_encoded string (error: Length of the data to decrypt is invalid), an array and an associative array both string and base64_encoded string and get the error above. Any help would be appreciated.

I have built my own little custom XML-RPC server, and since I'd like to keep things simple, on both server and client side, what I would like to accomplish is to create a simplest possible client (in C# preferably) using WCF. Let's say that Contract for service exposed via XML-RPC is as follows: [ServiceContract] public interface IContract { [OperationContract(Action="Ping")] string Ping(); // server returns back string "Pong" [OperationContract(Action="Echo")] string Echo(string message); // server echoes back whatever message is } So, there are two example methods, one without any arguments, and another with simple string argument, both returning strings (just for sake of example). Service is exposed via http. Aaand, what's next? :)

  • .NET Webservice Client: Auto-retry upon call failure

    Hi, We have a .NET client calling a Java webservice using SSL. Sometimes the call fails due to poor connectivity (the .NET Client is a UI that is used from the weirdest locations). We would like to implement an automatic retry mechanism that will automatically retry a failed call X times before giving up. This should be done solely with specific types of connectivity exceptions (and not for exceptions generated by the web service itself). We tried to find how to do it on the Binding/Channel level, but failed... any ideas? Thanks, yonadav

If the feed site is inaccessible to any computer I am at as long as the reader site is available I can see the feed.     Is there a Google API similar to Yahoo and Bing's API's to check for the number of indexed pages on a specified domain? For example, for Yahoo if I type in the following URL: http://search.yahooapis.com/SiteExplorerService/V1/pageData?appid=MTSlade&query=http://www.dave-sellers.co.uk&domain_only=1&results=1 Then it will return some XML detailing the number of pages indexed as 'totalResultsAvailable' Any idea?
