• Lenovo e530 no wireless Ubuntu 13.04

  For some reason my wireless will not work on my Lenovo e530. I am dual booting ubuntu and windows 8 and my wireless works in windows. I saw online that I should run rfkill. I did that but only bluetooth shows up. There is no difference when I press the wireless fn key either, but it does block bluetooth (as it should). I'm really wanting to get into Ubuntu but this is holding me back. To clarify the wireless device does not show at all after running rfkill.

• After reinstalling ATI graphics drivers, my keyboard and mous aren't working anymore

  On Ubuntu 11.04 I tried to install the open source drivers for my laptops ATI Mobility Radeon 5470M but I messed that up a bit and lost xserver. Now I've managed to solve that problem with this and by downloading the ATI proprietary drivers and install those manually. Now, when Ubuntu loads up I get to the login screen but I can't use my mouse or my keyboard (usb keyboard and mouse doesn't work either). If I use the recovery console, then login with that and then run 'startx'. I can login fine (though Unity doesn't show, the graphics seem to be working because it shows the fading animation of libnotify), but I can't type or move my mouse.

• Joomla 2.5 -- Adding a custom field to menu-item-edit-form

  I would like to add a new Field (Select list of all menu-items) to the menu item-edit form. To do so I was setting up an system plugin with the following directory structure: languageroot/languageroot.php languageroot/form/form.xml As you can see in the posted code, that is all very basic to try out. Only after adding the following lines: <li <?php echo $this-form-getLabel( 'langroot-text', 'main' )? <?php echo $this-form-getInput('langroot-text', 'main' ); ? </li to: /admininstrator/components/com_menus/views/item/tmpl/edit.php a textfield shows up. Is it possible to inject the field without touching the edit.php? Is there anywhere a good tutorial about the JForm api? Is a system-plugin the right kind, or could it be a content plugin, or should it even be a component?

• broadcom 43225 wireless on acer laptop is disabled

  I have a acer aspire 5820T with a broadcom 43225 wireless card. I previously used ubuntu 10.10 and the wireless worked straight away, but when I updated to 11.04 the wireless stopped working. I have managed to get the wireless hardware to switch on for a couple of seconds before turning off (When you turn the wireless on using the manual switch the wireless light stays on for a couple of seconds and in the drop down connections menu the information under wireless networks changes from 'device not ready' to 'Disconnected' but shows no wireless networks despite there being one). So far I have tried installing an additional driver, and also disabling the additional driver and installing b43-fwcutter and firmware b43 installer. There may have been other things that I've found in searches that i've tried but unfortunately I can't remember them. Any help would be appreciated.

• No sound on fresh install of 13.10

  I installed a new copy of 13.10 today and cannot get my audio to work. Speakers test good on other devices, enabled in the BIOS, worked this morning in a Windows environment. I ran all of the available updates through apt-get. aplay -l lists my card (which tells me Ubuntu recognizes the hardware, I have been looking around the web and trying various things to no avail. Pulse folder permissions seem fine, I've reinstalled ALSA, and the card shows both digital and analog in the system settings sound section. I have tried this guide: Sound Troubleshooting Guide As well as looked through these forums under the tags sound and 13.10 Anyone have any ideas that may help me?

• update-apt-xapian-index hogs CPU, even when Update Manager is set to not check for updates

  I have a slightly older laptop running Ubuntu 11.10. It runs fine, but frequently, when I start it up, the CPU monitor in my Gnome Panel shows 100% usage for for what can be up to five minutes or so. It seems that the offending process is update-apt-xapian-index, which, if I understand correctly, is the update manager checking for updates. I have gone into the update manager settings, and selected to never check for updates. I'll do that manually when I feel like I have the time to leave the laptop running for that. However, despite my selection, this still happens. Roughly 50% of the time or more, when I start my laptop, it runs update-apt-xapian-index. How can I get the update manager to respect my settings, or at least to get this process to stop eating my CPU cycles?

• Adsense link units trageting better keywords?

  I have one link unit above my navigation which targets exact keywords on what my site is about, on contrary my adsense for content Leadbord and Wide Skyscraper show ads that are totally opposite from my keyword,while my ctr increased for about 10 times with link unit I noticed cpc is lower also (but that was just based on one day, today is higher). Is it so bad to completly get rid of standard content ads and put link units, because this way I earn so little for that site but I think that is because smart pricing (accidental clicks on ads that my users are not interested)? I earn in whole day with about 25-35 clicks as much as keyword tool shows for only one click,my site is first for the topic? I really don't know what to do.. Has anyone had similar situation or can give some advice?

  We have just released an official certification exam for Oracle ADF Development.  This exam is aimed that those who are already getting hands-on with ADF and would like an official certification of their development skills. I was involved in writing some of the exam questions and this was an interesting experience.  We were looking to test not only a knowledge of the framework, but also a practical application of that knowledge.  Trying to do that in a clear question which related to multiple choice questions was sometimes difficult but I think we’ve produced a testing exam which, if you pass, shows a strong practical knowledge of ADF.   I have Ubuntu 11.10 installed today and trying to connect to wireless but its not working. It has been working correctly on my Windows 7. i am pretty new to Ubuntu. I tried suggestions listed in this forum but nothing seems to be working for wireless. It shows wireless card listed when I do- sudo lshw -C network: It displays wireless interface as BCM4313. my laptop- Dell Inspiron 4010 Ubuntu- 11.10 Any suggestions? It works when I connect LAN cable to same modem.

• Ubuntu 11.10 momentarily freezes every couple minutes

  I'm working on an Acer Aspire One D257 running Ubuntu 11.10, and every few minutes the laptop freezes up for a second or two, before becoming responsive again. This doesn't really present a huge problem, but when I'm trying to code all of a sudden vim stops responding for a couple seconds while I'm trying to modify my code, it's increasingly frustrating. The odd part is, if I play a movie in VLC at the same time, when vim pauses the video keeps playing just fine (VLC's priority is not modified). I'm wondering if anyone knows why this may be happening, or in lieu of that, how I might be able to track down the source of my frustrating pauses. Normally I would try using top, but the pauses are shorter than 2 seconds so nothing unusual shows up in top as consuming the CPU. Does anyone know how to troubleshoot intermittent repeating 1 second long pauses in vim?

• Is it possible to create a virtual drive and share via USB?

  My question is kind of hard to follow, but I'm asking if it's possible to make a virtual flash drive and sync it to another device with a USB to USB cable? To make things more clear, think of a typical flash drive. You connect it to a laptop and it shows up as a removable disk. Is it possible to make a computer a host of a "Virtual Drive" that would be connected to a USB cord on one end, and the other end connecting to another device such as a Xbox 360, or another computer.

• wget not respecting my robots.txt. Is there an interceptor?

  I have a website where I post csv files as a free service. Recently I have noticed that wget and libwww have been scraping pretty hard and I was wondering how to circumvent that even if only a little. I have implemented a robots.txt policy. I posted it below.. User-agent: wget Disallow: / User-agent: libwww Disallow: / User-agent: * Disallow: / Issuing a wget from my totally independent ubuntu box shows that wget against my server just doesn't seem to work like so.... http://myserver.com/file.csv Anyway I don't mind people just grabbing the info, I just want to implement some sort of flood control, like a wrapper or an interceptor. • Google Webmaster Tools Index dropped to Zero [closed]

  Earlier this year I rebuilt my website using ZenCart. Immediately I saw a drop in index status from 59 to 0. I then signed up for Google Webmaster Tools and noticed the Index status took a dramatic drop and has never recovered. I have worked to add content and I know I am not done, but have not seen any recovery of this index since. What confuses me is when I look at the sitemap status under Optimization it shows me there are 1239 submitted and 1127 pages indexed. Most of my pages have fallen off page one for relevant search terms and some are as far back as page 7 or 8 where they used to be on the first page. I have made some changes in the past week to robots.txt and sitemap.xml, but have not seen any improvements. Can anyone tell me what might be going on here? My website is andersonpens.net. Thanks! • Grub rescue problem after installing ubuntu

  I have windows 7 installed in my internal hdd and wanted to try out Ubuntu so I got a USB to put Ubuntu LiveUSB on and installed Ubuntu on an external HDD and everything worked out fine. Now the problem. If I remove the external hdd and try to boot windows normally it shows the grub rescue screen. The only way to boot into windows is by having the external hdd attached. Is there any way I can make it so I wont have to have the external hdd attached to be able to boot my windows 7?

• Skype on 12.04 x64 does not start even after purging and reinstalling it

  I am wondering if there's anyone here who managed to use Skype on 12.04. It used to work (ever since I first tried Ubuntu 10.04) flawlessly, but after upgrading to 12.04, it just doesn't start. If I start Skype from terminal, it just says Segmentation fault (core dumped). I tried to remove Skype and installed it from different locations: Skype website (did not install at all, "package error") From official Ubuntu repository (doesn't start at all, segmentation fault) From repository "deb http://archive.canonical.com/ $(lsb_release -sc) partner" (doesn't start at all, segmentation fault) Interesting thing: even if I remove / purge Skype from the system, it still shows up in Unity menu (of course doesn't start). Any help here?

• Raspberry Pi + Azure + Mobile App

So I've taken delivery of a Raspberry Pi. I've ordered a new Crucible Technology Caller ID Box. (arriving soon). I have been writing/learning Python to implement the Listener software. This will in turn push xml messages up to Azure for final delivery via push notifications to an App. iOS app already written to receive the notifications/allow address book additions made up from phone numbers from incoming calls. • Lubuntu 13.10 selected LX games desktop now can't login

  I logged out of my normal desktop and selected LX games from the dropdown list and logged back in. This led me to a black screen and now I can't see the login screen in order to change back to my normal desktop. On startup the machine boots normally, the lubuntu splash screen shows up, then it goes to a black screen with nothing on it - not even a mouse cursor. I can bring up a terminal using ctrl+alt+F2. Is there a way via terminal to change my desktop environment back to its previous state? Or alternatively, is there a file I can edit where my preferred desktop is stored? (The machine is dual-booted so I can access the Lubuntu files from LXLE which is installed on a second partition). The machine in question is a Toshiba A200 laptop.

• Numlock doesn't work after logging in

  I've a strange problem after upgrading to Ubuntu 11.10 The Numlock of my Apple Keyboard (white, wired) doesn't work anymore. Strange thing because it works with the guest account but not with my user account. I did change the lightdm.conf to get the numlock working for the login and it works, but nor in my user account. Even stranger, pushing zero effects a right click? I also tried different keyboard layouts, but it shows Numlock on (stuck on) but doesn't work. Any idea which config file stores information about this?

• Can't install Ubuntu in a HP DV6 Laptop

  I just bought an HP DV6 6011tx (link) Laptop... I formated the disk through Windows and prepared for installing Ubuntu... When I insert the live CD, it shows the ubuntu start screen and then everything goes black (no cursor... Just like the screen is switched off (but the system is working)) When i try to install from the USB, it says Live media is not found! Some times it also give a black screen like the CD... • Xubuntu keeps loading on install with usb stick

  I'm trying to install Xubuntu on my computer. I've followed a guide to create a USB bootable drive. I've inserted the USB stick and started the computer. I can see Xubuntu loading and after a minute or 2 it shows me a screen asking me if I'd like to use the live version or if I'd like to install. I choose install. Then on the next screen I select English as language. When I click continue, Xubuntu just keeps loading. It doesn't really freeze as I can still quit and move the cursor. When I clicked quit, I see the live version and all is working just fine. I can browse the internet, etc. What could be wrong?
