• JSP Include: one large bean or bean for each include

  I want to refactor a webapp that consists of very distorted JSPs and servlets. Because we can't switch to a web framework easily we have to keep JSPs and Servlets, and now we are in doubt how to include pages into another and how to setup the use:bean-directives effectively. At the first step we want to decouple the code for the core-actions and the bean-creation into servlets. The servlets should forward to their corresponding pages, which should use the bean. The problem here is, that each jsp consists of different sub- and sub-sub-jsp that are included into another. Here is a shortend extract (because reality is more complex): head header top navigation actionspanel main header actionspanel foot footer Moreover each jsp (also the header and footer) use dynamic data. For example title and actionspanel can change on each page-reload or do have links and labels that depend on the processing by the preceding servlet. I know that jsp-include-directives should only be used for static content und should be avoided for dynamic content. But here we have very large pages, that consist of many parts. Now the core questions: Should I use one big bean for each page, so that each bean holds also data for header and footer beside its core data, so that each subsequent included jsp uses the same bean-directive? For example: DirectoryJSP <- DirectoryBean CompareJSP <- CompareBean Or should I use one bean for each jsp, so that each bean only holds the data for one jsp and its own purpose. For example: DirectoryJSP <- DirectoryBean HeaderJSP <- HeaderBean FooterJSP <- FooterBean CompareJSP <- CompareBean HeaderJSP <- HeaderBean FooterJSP <- FooterBean In the second case: should the subsequent beans be a member of the corresponding parent bean, so that only the parent bean is attached as attribute to the request? • Configuring Apache reverse proxy

  I have loadbalancer server and edges. I am trying to configure reverse proxy in order to hide the backend servers PL1,2,3. PL 1,2,3 are not located in same subnet. They are located in different locations. PL1 Lb1 -> PL2 PL3 I tried to configure Apache reverse proxy but it is not sending request to PL1,2,3. Reverse proxy worked only when I configured apache to send request to local server on other port. ProxyRequests Off <Proxy *> Order deny,allow Allow from all </Proxy> ProxyPass /PL1 http://PL1server.com/ ProxyPassReverse /PL1 http://PL1server.com/ The above configuration did not worked. Could you help me to solve the issue. Or is there other proxy types like Squid,Socks5 to solve this issue. Does the reverse proxy fails if we use IP address or domain URL in ProxyPass and ProxyPassReverse ?

• Static classes and/or singletons -- How many does it take to become a code smell?

  In my projects I use quite a lot of static classes. These are usually classes that naturally seem to fit into a single-instance type of thing. Many times I use static classes and recently I've started using some singletons. How many of these does it take to become a code smell? For instance, in my recent project which has a lot of static classes is an Authentication library for ASP.Net. I use a static class for a helper class that fixes ASP.Net error codes so it can be used like CustomErrorsFixer.Fix(Context); Or my authentication class itself is a static class //in global.asax's begin_application Authentication.SomeState="blah"; Authentication.SomeOption=true; //etc //in global.asax's begin_request Authentication.Authenticate(); When are static or singleton classes bad to use? Am I doing it wrong, or am I just in a project that by definition has very little per-instance state associated with it? • Strange IIS/Asp.net Exception Message

  I have a standard asp.net 2.0 application running on IIS 6. I have noticed some strange exception messages in the logs. They seem to be caused by random spam bots trying to submit forms. They are strange because the request string is huge and all the exception details in the event manager are messed up, they have been replaced with %21,%22, etc.. as seen in the screen shot. Is this some kind of exploit or just a bug in the asp.net exception handler/logger ? UPDATE: I traced the requests that are causing this strange log event to a bug in IE8 that causes it to request scriptresource.axd?d={html from page} as described in these links: MS Connect SO - Invalid Webresource.axd SO - IE8 Dropping Memory Pages I am still not sure why these requests would break the IIS log event like seen above, they are just long strings of jiberish being sent to the server, maybe someone reading this can shed some light on it.

  One of the problems with recommending Ubuntu to potential future users, especially those not particularly given to technical endeavours, is that there is a chance that upgrades will break their machine, and they'll have to pay or otherwise coerce some knowledgeable person into fixing them. In my limited experience of running successive versions of Ubuntu since 8-something on a couple of different laptops, this chance is quite high. I'm not sure if I'm just unlucky with the hardware that I'm using, or if it's a result of the higher-than-average number of packages I have installed, or if upgrades are just typically problematic. So I'd like to know the likelihood, for a casual user, of doing a release upgrade, for example from 10.04 to 10.10, without experiencing any regression bugs. Obviously this is dependent on the hardware that people are running. Canonical seems to be making some efforts towards collecting data on this, for example with the "I am affected by this bug" checkbox on their issue tracker, and with the laptop compatibility reports, but I've not seen anything comprehensive. I'm hoping for an objective reference here, for example a study carried out by relatively unbiased individuals. However, anecdotal evidence is probably useful too.

  Hello all, I make a GET request to a CGI script and I get a 404 error. However, I am 100% sure that script is present and it has permissions: -rwxr-xr-x 1 apache apache 6520 Sep 7 03:01 uu_ini_status_audios.pl The request URL is: http://mysite.com/cgi-bin/uu_ini_status_audios.pl?tmp_sid=893facacc5dc392ad0f4c91e6a9e8d40&rnd_id=0.12266222834382812 The error I get: The requested URL /cgi-bin/uu_ini_status_audios.pl was not found on this server. This use to work for me before, but I think it stopped working after I restarted apache so maybe it means its a configuration I changed?? I checked the error logs for apache and php and nothing useful was found to help me with my problem! I appreciate any help on this!

• BizTalk 2009 - The Community ODBC Adapter: Receive Location

  I have previously talked about the installation of the Community ODBC adapter and also using the ODBC adapter to generate schemas.  But what about creating a receive location? An ODBC receive location will periodically poll the configured database using the stored procedure or SQL string defined in your request schema. If you need to, begin by adding a new receive port to your BizTalk configuration. Create a new receive location and select to use the ODBC adapter and click Address. You will now be shown the ODBC Community Adapter Transport properties window.  Select connection string and you will be shown the Choose data Source window.  If you have already created the Test Database source when generating a schema from ODBC this will be shown (if not go and take a look in my previous post to see how this is done).   You will then need to choose the SQL command that will be run by the recieve port.  In this case I have deployed the Test Mapping schemas that I created previously and selected the Request schema. You should now have populated the appropriate properties for the ODBC Com Adapter. Finally set the standard receive location properties and your ODBC receive location is now ready.

• DAO/Webservice Consumption in Web Application

  I am currently working on converting a "legacy" web-based (Coldfusion) application from single data source (MSSQL database) to multi-tier OOP. In my current system there is a read/write database with all the usual stuff and additional "read-only" databases that are exported daily/hourly from an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system by SSIS jobs with business product/item and manufacturing/SCM planning data. The reason I have the opportunity and need to convert to multi-tier OOP is a newer more modern ERP system is being implemented business wide that will be a complete replacement. This newer ERP system offers several interfaces for third party applications like mine, from direct SQL access to either a dotNet web-service or a SOAP-like web-service. I have found several suitable frameworks I would be happy to use (Coldspring, FW/1) but I am not sure what design patterns apply to my data access object/component and how to manage the connection/session tokens, with this background, my question has the following three parts: Firstly I have concerns with moving from the relative safety of a SSIS job that protects me from downtime and speed of the ERP system to directly connecting with one of the web services which I note seem significantly slower than I expected (simple/small requests often take up to a whole second). Are there any design patterns I can investigate/use to cache/protect my data tier? It is my understanding data access objects (the component that connects directly with the web services and convert them into the data types I can then work with in my Domain Objects) should be singletons (and will act as an Adapter/Facade), am I correct? As part of the data access object I have to setup a connection by username/password (I could set up multiple users and/or connect multiple times with this) which responds with a session token that needs to be provided on every subsequent request. Do I do this once and share it across the whole application, do I setup a new "connection" for every user of my application and keep the token in their session scope (might quickly hit licensing limits), do I set the "connection" up per page request, or is there a design pattern I am missing that can manage multiple "connections" where a requests/access uses the first free "connection"? It is worth noting if the ERP system dies I will need to reset/invalidate all the connections and start from scratch, and depending on which web-service I use might need manually close the "connection/session"

  Hello, I have 4 Name Virtual Hosts on my apache configuration, each one using proxy_http to forward request to the correct server. They work fine. <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName application_name.domain.tld ProxyRequests Off ProxyPreserveHost On ProxyPass / http://server_ip/ ProxyPassReverse / http://server_ip/ </VirtualHost> I then tried to add a default NameVirtualHost to take care of the requests for which the server name does not match one of the four others. Otherwise a request like some_weird_styff.domain.tld would be forwarded to one of the 4 VH. I then added this one: <VirtualHost *:80> ServerAlias "*" DocumentRoot /var/www/ </VirtualHost> At the beginning it seemed to work fine, but at some point it appears that the requests that should be handed by one of the 4 regular hosts is "eaten" by the default one !!! If I a2dissite this default host, everything is back to normal... I do not really understand this. If you have any clue... thanks a lot, Luc

  After reading up on SNMP and some of the questions help here I think understand the agent role as a SNMP service to device (Like SQL, it is an API to storage). When you execute a SQL query the SQL engine does all the work and returns the result - You don't need to be aware of how the storage and where the storage is done. But MIBs are not actual storage , so what is the role of my agent? if the agent only register the MIB like i follow in this tutorial, is it not used as handler at all? Say that I want monitor my application's pending request queue, so I want an agent that all SNMP request for application_pending_request will be fired for it and it will return the queue depth. Why do I need to have an actual MIB when all I need to poll my application queue in order to get result?

• Does it actually matter whether you have open applications when installing new software?

  It seems the norm these days is for installers/setup programs to request that you close all open applications before initiating the install process for a piece of new software. I used to obediently follow these directions without fail, even though it could sometimes be frustrating having to close open documents and stop working on things just to get a new, seemingly unrelated application installed. Then at some point I simply stopped bothering. Nowadays if I have a lot of stuff going on I might even run multiple installers at the same time; I can't even recall a time it has ever posed a problem. Why do setup programs even make this request in the first place, then, when it appears to be unnecessary? Is this just to simplify troubleshooting for companies' support people? Has anyone else ever run into problems as a result of trying to install an app while other apps were open?

As previous versions, this release provides tons of enhancements and bug fixes, attributing to improved stability and quality. One of the areas that is most exciting and has seen tremendous growth in the last few years is that of Database as a Service. EM12c R4 provides a significant update to Database as a Service. The key themes are: Comprehensive Database Service Catalog (includes single instance, RAC, and Data Guard) Additional Storage Options for Snap Clone (includes support for Database feature CloneDB) Improved Rapid Start Kits Extensible Metering and Chargeback Miscellaneous Enhancements 1. Comprehensive Database Service Catalog Before we get deep into implementation of a service catalog, lets first understand what it is and what benefits it provides. Per ITIL, a service catalog is an exhaustive list of IT services that an organization provides or offers to its employees or customers. Service catalogs have been widely popular in the space of cloud computing, primarily as the medium to provide standardized and pre-approved service definitions. There is already some good collateral out there that talks about Oracle database service catalogs. Additional Storage Options for Snap Clone In my previous blog posts, i have described the snap clone feature in detail. With this in mind, we have pursued with the dual solution approach of Hardware and Software. In the hardware approach, we connect directly to your storage appliances and perform all low level actions required to rapidly clone your databases. While in the software approach, we use an intermediate software layer to talk to any storage vendor or any storage configuration to perform the same low level actions. Thus delivering the benefits of database thin cloning, without requiring you to drastically changing the infrastructure or IT's operating style. In release 4, we expand the scope of options supported by snap clone with the addition of database CloneDB. While CloneDB is not a new feature, it was first introduced in 11.2.0.2 patchset, it has over the years become more stable and mature. CloneDB leverages a combination of Direct NFS (or dNFS) feature of the database, RMAN image copies, sparse files, and copy-on-write technology to create thin clones of databases from existing backups in a matter of minutes. It essentially has all the traits that we want to present to our customers via the snap clone feature. Improved Rapid Start Kits DBaaS deployments tend to be complex and its setup requires a series of steps. These steps are typically performed across different users and different UIs. The Rapid Start Kit provides a single command solution to setup Database as a Service (DBaaS) and Pluggable Database as a Service (PDBaaS). One command creates all the Cloud artifacts like Roles, Administrators, Credentials, Database Profiles, PaaS Infrastructure Zone, Database Pools and Service Templates. Once the Rapid Start Kit has been successfully executed, requests can be made to provision databases and PDBs from the self service portal. Rapid start kit can create complex topologies involving multiple zones, pools and service templates. It also supports standby databases and use of RMAN image backups. The Rapid Start Kit in reality is a simple emcli script which takes a bunch of xml files as input and executes the complete automation in a matter of seconds. On a full rack Exadata, it took only 40 seconds to setup PDBaaS end-to-end. This kit works for both Oracle's engineered systems like Exadata, SuperCluster, etc and also on commodity hardware. One can draw parallel to the Exadata One Command script, which again takes a bunch of inputs from the administrators and then runs a simple script that configures everything from network to provisioning the DB software. Steps to use the kit: The kit can be found under the SSA plug-in directory on the OMS: EM_BASE/oracle/MW/plugins/oracle.sysman.ssa.oms.plugin_12.1.0.8.0/dbaas/setup It can be run from this default location or from any server which has emcli client installed For most scenarios, you would use the script dbaas/setup/database_cloud_setup.py For Exadata, special integration is provided to reduce the number of inputs even further. The script to use for this scenario would be dbaas/setup/exadata_cloud_setup.py The database_cloud_setup.py script takes two inputs: Cloud boundary xml: This file defines the cloud topology in terms of the zones and pools along with host names, oracle home locations or container database names that would be used as infrastructure for provisioning database services. This file is optional in case of Exadata, as the boundary is well know via the Exadata system target available in EM. Input xml: This file captures inputs for users, roles, profiles, service templates, etc. Essentially, all inputs required to define the DB services and other settings of the self service portal. Once all the xml files have been prepared, invoke the script as follows for PDBaaS: emcli @database_cloud_setup.py -pdbaas -cloud_boundary=/tmp/my_boundary.xml -cloud_input=/tmp/pdb_inputs.xml          The script will prompt for passwords a few times for key users like sysman, cloud admin, SSA admin, etc. Once complete, you can simply log into EM as the self service user and request for databases from the portal. More information available in the Rapid Start Kit chapter in Cloud Administration Guide.  4. Extensible Metering and Chargeback  Last but not the least, Metering and Chargeback in release 4 has been made extensible in all possible regards. The new extensibility features allow customer, partners, system integrators, etc to : Extend chargeback to any target type managed in EM Promote any metric in EM as a chargeback entity Extend list of charge items via metric or configuration extensions Model abstract entities like no. of backup requests, job executions, support requests, etc  A slew of emcli verbs have also been added that allows administrators to create, edit, delete, import/export charge plans, and assign cost centers all via the command line. More information available in the Chargeback API chapter in Cloud Administration Guide. 5. Miscellaneous Enhancements There are other miscellaneous, yet important, enhancements that are worth a mention. These mostly have been asked by customers like you. These are: Custom naming of DB Services Self service users can provide custom names for DB SID, DB service, schemas, and tablespaces Every custom name is validated for uniqueness in EM 'Create like' of Service Templates Now creating variants of a service template is only a click away. This would be vital when you publish service templates to represent different database sizes or service levels. Profile viewer View the details of a profile like datafile, control files, snapshot ids, export/import files, etc prior to its selection in the service template Cleanup automation - for failed and successful requests Single emcli command to cleanup all remnant artifacts of a failed request Cleanup can be performed on a per request bases or by the entire pool As an extension, you can also delete successful requests Improved delete user workflow Allows administrators to reassign cloud resources to another user or delete all of them Support for multiple tablespaces for schema as a service In addition to multiple schemas, user can also specify multiple tablespaces per request I hope this was a good introduction to the new Database as a Service enhancements in EM12c R4.   I have a strange problem with connecting to a https site from one of my servers. When I type: telnet puppet 8140 I am presented with a standard telnet console and can talk to the Server as always: Connected to athena.hidden.tld. Escape character is '^]'. GET / HTTP/1.1 <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//IETF//DTD HTML 2.0//EN"> <html><head> <title>400 Bad Request</title> </head><body> <h1>Bad Request</h1> <p>Your browser sent a request that this server could not understand.<br /> Reason: You're speaking plain HTTP to an SSL-enabled server port.<br /> Instead use the HTTPS scheme to access this URL, please.<br /> <blockquote>Hint: <a href="https://athena.hidden.tld:8140/"><b>https://athena.hidden.tld:8140/</b></a></blockquote></p> <hr> <address>Apache/2.2.16 (Debian) Server at athena.hidden.tld Port 8140</address> </body></html> Connection closed by foreign host. The systems are debian squeeze vm-boxes. [edit 1] Even when I try to connect directly with the IP address: openssl s_client -connect 198.51.100.1:8140 #address exchanged connect: No route to host connect:errno=113 Bringing down the firewalls on both hosts with service ferm stop is also not helping. But when I do openssl s_client -connect localhost:8140 on the server machine it is connecting fine. [edit 2] if I connect to the IP with telnet it also is not working. telnet 198.51.100.1 8140 Trying 198.51.100.1... telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: No route to host The confusion might come from IPv6. I have IPv6 on all my hosts. It seems that telnet uses IPv6 by default and this works. For example: telnet -6 puppet 8140 works but telnet -4 puppet 8140 does not work. So there seems to be a problem with the IPv4 route. openssl seems to only (or by default) use IPv4 and therefore fails but telnet uses IPv6 and succeeds.

• Are there open source alternatives to Bitbucket, Github, Kiln, and similar DVCS browsing and management tools?

  I am aware of several tools/services that provide DVCS browsing and management such as Bitbucket, Github, Kiln, SCM-Manager and Rhodecode. However, the use case I am considering is one such that: Any source code must reside on an employers internal servers. The solution must be open source. It should provide a Bitbucket or Github like experience, including a project wiki, repository browsing and management, and social coding aspects such as code review. The solution should have mercurial support (if not support for other DVCSs). Of these, only SCM-Manager and RhodeCode come close as they can be installed on your own servers and are open source. However they do not have the Bitbucket or Github experience. There is no issue tracker or wiki and the UI, while functional, is not up to par with Github or Bitbucket. I can get close with Trac or Redmine with their repository browsers but unfortunately they do not have any repository management capabilities. Are there other open source tools out there that would provide a similar experience to Bitbucket, Github or Kiln?

  I'm having the following issue on a host using Apache 2.2.22 + PHP 5.4.0 I need to provide the file /home/server1/htdocs/admin/contents.php when a user makes the request: http://server1/admin/contents, but I obtain this message on the server error_log. Negotiation: discovered file(s) matching request: /home/server1/htdocs/admin/contents (None could be negotiated) Notice that I have mod_negotiation enabled and MultiViews among the options for the related virtualhost: <Directory "/home/server1/htdocs"> Options Indexes Includes FollowSymLinks MultiViews Order allow,deny Allow from all AllowOverride All </Directory> I also use mod_rewrite, with the following .htaccess rules: RewriteEngine On RewriteBase / RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule ^([^\./]*)$ index.php?t=$1 [L] </IfModule> It seems very strange, but on the same box with PHP 5.3.6 it used to work correctly. I'm just trying an upgrade to PHP 5.4.0, but I cannot solve this negotiation issue. Any idea on why Apache cannot match contents.php when asking for content (which should be what mod_negotiation is supposed to do)?

• How to talk to a virtual host on a guest OS?

  Let's say there is a host OS (Mac OS X) and a virtual machine running Ubuntu as guest OS. The guest OS has the IP 192.186.56.101 and some virtual hosts, e.g. ubuntu.server So, how to really map a request to the virtual host ubuntu.server on the guest OS? I tried: Configure the host OS in /etc/hosts to map ubuntu.server to 192.186.56.101 On the guest OS we have the trouble. It accepts the request for 192.186.56.101 which is not ubuntu.server and therefor the ubuntu.server virtual host will never be requested. Just the localhost on the guest OS. It might surely be possible to simply then use 192.168.56.101. But this would only work for one host per guest OS. Any idea? Or is there a bug in my train of thoughts?
