• MacBook Pro 13 (mid 2010 model) - External Display Low Resolution

  I am trying to connect my ASUS VH242H (1920x1020), with my Macbook Pro. The laptop has a 320m nvidia and it should be more than enough to support an external display. I had my old laptop connected, (with a 9600mgt) and it worked fine.I am not mirroring the display I just want an extension ( if possible only the external display diplaying). Why is the external display is showing only the lower (1378x768) resolution? I am using this adapter: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B002WUVAVE/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00 Any help please?

• Mac sees mangled filenames from Linux SAMBA share

  Certain filenames in my SAMBA shares from Linux are not getting transmitted properly. It's certain files in certain folders and it doesn't affect all folders or all files within a single folder. I can find no discerning pattern to the mangling but hoping that this is a known problem. No amount of reboot, restart, etc. will fix this problem. The filenames, when they get mangled, all end up in this form: 0JY4B3~H.M4V 0MBS1O~M.M4V 0NKDX9~R.M4V 0O0ZTA~A.M4V These are MPEG4 files. The extension remains intact. Any ideas?

• why is internet explorer displaying my javascript pagination backwards?

  Here's a version of the code I'm using, stripped down to just the parts that aren't working. This is all written to generate some basic pagination with jQuery. In Chrome/Safari/Moz, I generate see spans, 1,2,3,4,...,etc When I look in IE7/8, I see etc,...,4,3,2,1 The string seems to be concatenating backwards!! This seems very strange to me, because there's not a whole lot going on in the code here, I can't figure out which bit could be causing problems.   I just came up with this, it seems to work in all modern browsers, I just tested it then on (IE8/compatibility, Chrome, Safari, Moz) HTML <img id="my_image" alt="my text" src="images/small_transparent.gif" /> CSS #my_image{ background-image:url('images/my_image.png'); width:100px; height:100px;} Pro's: image alt text is best-practice for accessibility/seo no extra HTML markup, and the css is pretty minimal too gets around the css on/images off issue where "text-indent" techniques hide text from low bandwidth users The biggest disadvantage that I can think of is the css off/images on situation, because you'll only send a transparent gif. I'd like to know, who uses images without stylesheets? some kind of mobile phone or something? I'm making some sites for clients in regional Australia (hundreds of km from the nearest city), where many users will be suffering from dial-up connections, and often outdated browsers too, so the "images off" issue is an important consideration. are there any other side effects with this technique that I haven't considered?

  We're using the fb:registration plugin to sign up users on our site. Today I noticed the registration redirect is no longer working in Google Chrome and Safari (latest public release). I know for sure it was working with the same code as recently as last week. It seems to be getting stuck on submission with this error, which is coming from: static.ak.fbcdn.net/rsrc.php/v1/ys/r/ioE9qOq_5Oa.js:101 Firefox and IE have no problem, so it seems to be Webkit specific. Any ideas?

• Why is my hosts file not working?

  I've been using the hosts file to for local website development, and it's recently stopped working. No entries other than localhost resolve. I've simplified to test, so it now contains only 127.0.0.1 localhost ::1 localhost 127.0.0.1 test.dev localhost responds to ping, test.dev does not. The file is called hosts with no extension It has no trailing spaces It's saved in C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc which matches the value of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\DataBasePath Oddly, despite UAC being on, I can edit, delete and save the file without admin permissions No proxy is being used, PC is not connected to network for testing Stopping the DNS Client service seemed to resolve the issue for a few minutes, test.dev briefly resolved but doesn't any more. Only firewall is Windows' Machine has been restarted. Is there anything else I should try?

• Jquery SimpleModal flickers in Firefox

  I'm using SimpleModal plugin for Jquery and I have a weird problem with Firefox ( other browsers work fine: Chrome, Safari, Opera, IE). What happens is when I click on the button that launches the modal dialog, before showing the modal (and the fadeIn of the overlay), there is a quick "flicker", less than half a second. (It's longer on my slower PC). Weird thing is, it didn't happen in Firefox 3.5.2, but when I upgraded to 3.6.3, I got the flicker. Any ideas? • simplemodal contact form does not close after sending mail in ie8

  hi, i am using the simplemodal contact form for my website. it works perfectly on safari, firefox and opera on mac os, and firefox and chrome on windows. the only issue i have is with ie8. when i click the "send" button the mail is actually sent but i get an error message (alert window with "unknown" in it) and then everything seems to be in some infinite loop with the "loading.gif" turning and turning. it never gets to the step where i ahve the message "your mail has been sucessfully sent" although like i said the mail is sent. any idea where the problem is coming from ? thanks for your help. frank

• Local sites not displaying in VirtualBox when using Django's local development server?

  Hello. I develop web applications using Django on Mac OSX 10.6. I use Django's built in local development server which I run on my computer's IP (such as: http://192.168.0.11:8001/). I test my applications in Firefox, Safari and Chrome and all display fine. I use Sun's VirtualBox with 3 different instances of Windows XP that have IE6, IE7 and IE8 on them. For whatever reason, these sometimes just don't display the Django sites. They come up with 'The page cannot be displayed'. Eight times out of ten, they display fine and function normally but for no reason at all they won't display. Sometimes restarting Django's local development server from the Terminal will fix the problem, sometimes it won't. Is there some sort of VirtualBox settings or Django settings that I need to set to ensure smooth operation of this? Am I overlooking something? Has anyone else had these problems?

  We have an IIS 7 webserver configured and would like to create a reverse proxy for a TeamCity installation using Tomcat on the same machine. The IIS server site is https://somesite and I would like the TeamCity to appear as https://somesite/teamcity redirecting to http://localhost:portnumber. I have installed the IIS URL Rewrite extension and the Application Request Routing to try and setup a reverse proxy but can't get it working. The closest answer I found is an old StackOverflow question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/331755/how-do-i-setup-teamcity-for-public-access-over-https which unfortunately doesn't have any working example. I've searched a quite a bit but can't seem to find a relevant example. Any help is appreciated!

• Is there a way to bundle pdf tiles to a Kindle friendly file?

  I'm downloading PDF approach plates from Navigraph, and i have a folder per airport with files named after their corresponding approach / departure etc. Now I'd like to take such a folder with a bunch of PDF files, automatically generate an index and combine them to a single .mobi file that i can send to my Kindle. The index created can be very simple and consist of the file name (without the extension). Tapping an index item should jump to the correct page for that chart. I know there is a host of apps that combine comic book jpg's to ebooks, but is there anything that does the above please?

• animate() not working for opacity in IE

  I'm trying to animate a div from 100% opacity to 40% opacity WITHOUT using fadeTo(). I need to use animate(). It works fine in chrome/FF/safari, but in IE, the opacity doesn't animate, it simply changes to that after the animation is done. Happens in IE 7 and 8. I'm doing this: .animate({ width: new_width, top: new_top, left: new_left, padding: new_padding, opacity: 0.4, filter: "alpha(opacity=40)" }, ... it's just not animating the opacity. Any ideas?

  I developed some javascript enhanced pages that run fine on recent Firefox and Safari. I missed to check in Internet Explorer, and now I find the pages don't work on IE 6 and 7 (so far). The scripts are somehow not executed, the pages show as if javascript wasn't there, although some javascript is executed. I am using own libraries with dom manipulation, from YUI 2 I use YUI-Loader and the XML-Http-Request, and on one page I use "psupload", which depends on JQuery. I am installing Microsoft Script Editor from Office XP and will now debug. I will also write specific tests now. What are the typical failing points of IE? What direction I can keep my eyes open.   I have the following command that lists all files with the extension doc, docx, etc. find . -maxdepth 1 -iname \*.doc\* The command returns numerous files some of which I would like to delete. So for example the results returned are Example.docx Dummydata.doc Sample.doc I would like to delete Sample.doc and Dummydata.docx. How do I delete the files using the -exec option. Am I able to pass in the names of the files e.g. rm Dummydata.docx Sample.doc hence the command would look as follows find . -maxdepth 1 -iname \*.doc\* -exec rm Dummydata.docx Sample.doc Can I pass the names of the files within {} afterrm`? e.g. find . -maxdepth 1 -iname \*.doc\* -exec rm {Dummydata.docx} Sample.doc Is there a better way of doing it?

But When i run my application in 2.0 all icons in the iphone should be correct . But when i run this in 3.0 my other applications icons are changed....   Hi, I have a site on A.com and an iframe on B.com which reads info from A.com. I realize that there is some problems with third party cookies, iframes and P3P - particularly in Safari [my problem] Is it possible to instead, use AJAX or a hidden iFrame to pass the cookie information from A.com to B.com which will then "recreate" another cookie with the same information on the iframe in B.com. I am trying to do this for authenication - i.e. a user is logged in on A.com and then goes to b.com and the iframe is also logged in ? I was hoping to perhaps pass the data in a hidden iframe and "recreate" the cookie in the iframe on B.com using JavaScript?

• Orphan Char appearing when using Sifr3 in Navigation (Wordpress)

  Hi there, I am having an issue implementing Sifr3 on this particular site and it's driving me nuts. It looks as if there is a width on the li or something but I'm 100% sure there isnt and the rest of the menu items are OK and display fine. Something in relation to this might help answer this problem, is that Sifr3 does does not work AT ALL in IE7 WIN. I've checked previous answers to this, being the trailing comma issue but I've triple checked and I do not have any trailing commas. Can anyone help on this pls? Thanks in advance

• Implementing Multitasking on an iPhone/iOS4 Web App

  I am looking to build a web app that implements background audio and fast app switching. These features work out of the box, when run as regular Safari web pages, but as soon as you add the web-app-capable tag, and try to run in full screen mode, this functionality breaks. I did some testing and even the most basic web app will reload every time when you switch back to it. And seeing as it's a web app, we can't exactly implement the multitasking API. Has anyone found a work around? This isn't a deal-breaker, as you can just avoid full screen mode, but then you also lose the ability to use your own icon in the app switch tray. Perhaps this explains a lack of full screen mode in YouTube's new web app....

  When using TRY-CATCH in JavaScript, how to get the line number of the line that caused the error? On many browsers, the below code will work great and I will get the stack trace that points to the actual line that throw the exception. However, some browsers do not have "e.stack". Iphone's safari is one example. • 503 error Varnish cache when eAccelerator is started

  I have a Magento installation running on x-large Amazon server. I have Varnish, memcached and eAccelerator installed on the server. At first everything was working fine, but then at some point it stopped working, throwing 503 error with Varnish cache stamp below it. When I disable eaccelerator, error is gone and site is working. • Limit on FileReference uploads?!

  Hello, I am currently uploading files in ActionScript 3 using the upload() method of the FileReference class. I built an uploader than can do simultaneous or parallel uploads, having a variable set the number of maximum uploads at a time. I noticed that for Internet Explorer I could be uploading 10 or more files simultaneously, but FireFox and Safari seems to cap the number of uploads to 2. That is, when I call the upload method on per say, 3 files, only 2 will get events back (such as ProgressEvent.PROGRESS). Only when one of the 2 uploads finishes, then the 3rd one will start. This behavior does not happen for Internet Explorer. I have tried with a large number of files, and some big files, to make sure this behavior was consistent. I was wondering if anyone noticed this behavior please, and if so, what is the reason for this behavior please? I appreciate your help, Thank you very much, Rudy
