• Microsoft DevDays 2010 Day #1

It's been an eventful day here at Microsoft DevDays 2010, and the show hasn't even officially started! First item of business is to get to a hotel for rest and get some great food-not necessarily in that order. My flight was as good as one can expect- the guy next to me, Jim Anderson, was affable but not overly chatty, and he's a soundman on European tour with The Sonics. Jim was the house-sound guy for the Crocodile Caf for many years, and it was great to talk to a guy who loves audio like I do....Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Sweet and Sour Source Control

A recent survey on SQL Server Central showed that most database developers don't use Source Control. At first glance, it's a surprising thought. Unfortunately, the survey didn't ask about the scale of the database development. If there is only one database developer within a schema, who has an automated approach to regular generation of build scripts, then the need for a formal source control system is questionable....Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Spending the summer at camp Web Camp, that is

Microsoft is sponsoring a series of Web Camps this summer. Theyre a series of free two day events being held worldwide, and Im really excited about being taking part. The camp is targeted at a broad range of developer background and experience. Content builds from 101 level introductory material to 200-300 level coverage, but we hit some advanced bits (e.g. MVC 2 features, jQuery templating, IIS 7 features, etc.) that advanced developers may not yet have seen. We start with a lap around ASP.NET...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Feedback on AZGroups Feedback Form

Next Monday is the 7th Annual day of .net with Scott Guthrie. I’ve been doing this event for many years and this year (for the first time) I’ll be asking for a feedback / eval form to be turned in at the end of the day. In true community fashion, I would like to ask your feedback on my feedback form. Please be constructive. I know that filling out forms seems silly on a one-by-one basis, but collectively the stats can really help, and I will personally read and evaluate each form, so...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Windows CE support forums

- by Valter Minute
As you may already know, microsoft is moving its communities to a new platform, based on web forums. The “old” USENET newsgroups are going to be replaced by web forums organized by categories. One for low-level platform development (for the guys working with Platform Builder), another one for native application development (for people writing their real-time applications in C/C++ or people using Silverlight for Windows Embedded) and, last but not least, a forum dedicated to managed application development (for people that are quickly developing their applications with the .NET Compact Framework). You can find the new forums here: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/category/windowsembeddedcompact Read the “welcome” message to choose the best forum for your question and never forget that to have a good answer you should ask your question in a good way. Here you can find some suggestions about how you can ask questions (in newsgroup or forums): http://guruce.com/blogpost/howtoaskquestionsonnewsgroups (Thanks to Michel Verhagen for the article)

Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Save the dates – Tech.Days 2011 23rd to 25th of May in London

- by Eric Nelson
In May Microsoft UK (and specifically my group) will be delivering Tech.Days – a week of day long technical events plus evening activities. We will be covering Windows Phone 7, Silverlight, IE 9, Windows Azure Platform and more. I’m working right now on the details of what we will be covering around the Windows Azure Platform – and it is shaping up very nicely. There is a little more detail over on TechNet – but for the moment, keep the dates clear if you can. P.S. I think the above is called a “teaser” in marketing speak.

• VS 2010 Debugger Improvements (BreakPoints, DataTips, Import/Export)

This is the twenty-first in a series of blog posts Im doing on the VS 2010 and .NET 4 release. Todays blog post covers a few of the nice usability improvements coming with the VS 2010 debugger. The VS 2010 debugger has a ton of great new capabilities. Features like Intellitrace (aka historical debugging), the new parallel/multithreaded debugging capabilities, and dump debuging support typically get a ton of (well deserved) buzz and attention when people talk about the debugging...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Three Hidden Extensibility Gems in ASP.NET 4

ASP.NET 4 introduces a few new extensibility APIs that live the hermit lifestyle away from the public eye. Theyre not exactly hidden - they are well documented on MSDN - but they arent well publicized. Its about time we shine a spotlight on them. PreApplicationStartMethodAttribute This new attribute allows you to have code run way early in the ASP.NET pipeline as an application starts up. I mean way early, even before Application_Start. This happens to also be before code in your App_code folder...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Include Method Extension for IObjectSet What about the mocks?

Eager loading with Entity Framework depends on the special ObjectQuery.Include method. We’ve had that from Day 1 (first version of ef). Now we use ObjectSets in EF4 which inherit from ObjectQuery (thereby inheriting Include) and also implement IObjectSet. IObjectSet allows us to break the queries apart from ObjectQuery and ObjectContext so we can write persistent ignorant, testable code. But IObjectSet doesn’t come with the Include method and you have to create an extension method to...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Timeouts in WCF and their default values

There are a lot of timeouts in WCF. let us summarize it here. Timeouts on binding These are the most well known timeouts. SendTimeout, ReceiveTimeout, OpenTimeout and CloseTimeout. They can be set easily either through config or code on the Binding. The default value for those are 1 minute. E.g in code Binding binding = new NetTcpBinding(SecurityMode.Transport) { SendTimeout = TimeSpan.FromMinutes(10), ReceiveTimeout = TimeSpan.FromMinutes(10), OpenTimeout...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? I attended the Gilbane Conference San Francisco 2010 today and did a short presentation on: Open Source Tools That are Changing the Content Technology Landscape Open Source tools are dramatically changing our perceptions of software and how we invest in tools for content creation, management and delivery. Open source tools are created more cheaply by a broad team of developers, but also may require strong support organizations to make them work, so they are never free. There is a certain paradox in being advised to expect the unexpected, but the DBA must plan and prepare in advance to protect their organization's data assets in the event of an unexpected crisis, and return them to normal operating conditions. To plan for recovery, It pays to have the mindset of a pessimist....Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? At the MIX conference, we demonstrated how the standard web patterns that developers already know and use broadly run better by taking advantage of PC hardware through IE9 on Windows. First, we showed IE9s new script engine, internally known as Chakra We shared the data and framework that informed our approach, and demonstrated better support for several standards: HTML5, DOM, and CSS3. We showed hardware-accelerated SVG support in IE9. Finally, we announced the availability of...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors?
