• Deploy SMO application to workstation without SQL Server 2008 installed

  I am trying to deploy an application that uses SMO on a workstation without SQL Server installed on it. The instance the app is connecting to is SQL Server 2008. The application is failing with: Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.SqlServer.Replication, Version 10.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=89845cdc8080cc91' or one of its dependencies. An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format. The assembly in question is in the same path as my application as well as system32. I am running this on a Windows 7 64 bit box. I have run SQL Native Client, CLR, and SMO MSIs from the 2008 SMO redist download page. This app worked fine when connecting to SQL Server 2005. What gives?

• Using Visual Studio to create web application in Sharepoint 2010

  Hello, I am looking for pointers, examples, etc. to create a basic application in sharepoint 2010 using visual studio. The application would show a list on page 1 (driven by linq entities). When you click a row, it shows a details page. I've gone through the tutorials but could not find a basic crud-like example as explained above. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If I missed something in one of the tutorials, please let me know. To summarize, in a very generic way; I am looking for information on how to display two web application pages and have the user click a link or control to move through pages. Regards, Bryan

• How is fseek() implemented in the filesystem?

  This is not a pure programming question, however it impacts the performance of programs using fseek(), hence it is important to know how it works. A little disclaimer so that it doesn't get closed. I am wondering how efficient it is to insert data in the middle of the file. Supposing I have a file with 1MB data and then I insert something at the 512KB offset. How efficient would that be compared to appending my data at the end of the file? Just to make the example complete lets say I want to insert 16KB of data. I understand the answer varies depending on the filesystem, however I assume that the techniques used in common filesystems are quite similar and I just want to get the right notion of it.

• Should I have one dll or multiple for Business Logic?

  In my situation, my company services many types of customers. Almost every customer requires their own Business Logic. Of course, there will be a base layer that all business logic should inherit from. However, I'm going back and forth on architecting this--either in one dll for all customers or one dll for each. My biggest point of contention deals with upgrading the software. We have about 12 data entry personnel that work with 20 companies and it's critical that they have little down time. My concern is that if I deploy everything in one dll, I could introduce a bug in company A's logic while only intending to update Company B's logic. I believe I could reduce the risk if each company's logic had their own dll, so then, I could deploy Company B's update w/o harming Company A's. -- I will be the only one supporting this. That said, this also seems like a nightmare to manage 20 different .dll's -- that's for the BLL alone. I also need to create a View layer and ViewModel layer. So, potentially, I could have 20 (companies) * 3 (layers) which would equate to 60 .dll's. Thank You.

  im working on a Windows Phone 7 Application that communicates with a Azure hosted WCF service. Everything works fine in communication and so on. But i want to handle the situation when the Service is not online. Now the WP7 App has a main screen with a login. After clicking the "Login" button the Application sends the credentials to the WCF Service which communicates with a Database. And now my question is, is there a way to get the online/offline state of the WCF Service? So i could give feedback to the user and the application wouldnt crash (: Thx alot for any answer!

• Where should I define Enums?

  Hi: I'm setting up a new app, with a Repository layer/assembly, a Services layer/assembly, and a UI assembly. So I end up with namespaces such as: App.UI App.Biz.Services App.Data.Repositories And then I have enums for the args that are used by all 3 layers. Only place that makes sense is to put them in the Cross cutting assembly. (define them in Data layer too low, as UI should have no direct ref to them, defined in Services, too high for Repository layer, which shouldn't be referencing upwards). But...which namespace in Common? Namespaces should mostly be used to define concerns, rather than Type... I've always used something like: namespace App.Common.Enums {...} but it's always felt a bit of a hack that works for me, but not well in a large org where everybody is generating Enums, and if we put them all in Enums folder it's going to make the code folder harder to understand later. Any suggestions?

Example: Two clients are viewing a list of users in an administration screen. One client adds a new user to the list and modifies the permissions of another user. The other client sees the changes propagated to their view.

• Reusing of a PreparedStatement between methods?

  We all know that we should rather reuse a JDBC PreparedStatement than creating a new instance within a loop. But how to deal with PreparedStatement reuse between different method invocations? Does the reuse-"rule" still count? Should I really consider using a field for the PreparedStatement or should I close and re-create the prepared statement in every invocation? (Of course an instance of such a class would be bound to a Connection which might be a disadvantage) I am aware that the ideal answer might be "it depends". But I am looking for a best practice for less experienced developers that they will do the right choice in most of the cases.

I must admit it is very comfortable cause i have ORM to my full DB and query with linq is easy and simple. My questions are: 1.   How would you suggest designing a challenge system as part of a food-eating game so that it's automated as possible? All RoR tools, design patterns and logic are at your disposal (e.g., admin consoles, crontab, arch, etc.). Prize goes to whoever can suggest the simplest and most-automated design! Here are the requirements: User has many challenges. Badge has many challenges. (A unique badge is awarded for each challenge won.) Only one challenge can run at a time. Each challenge has a limited number of days that it runs. For example, one challenge can run 3 days, while another runs 7 days. Challenges can be seasonal. For example, "Eat 13 Pumpkins" only runs during the Fall. New challenges are added to the game on an ongoing basis. For example, a new challenge every week. Each challenge has a certain probability of being selected to run. For example, "Eat 10 Pies" challenge has 10% chance of being selected to run. As each new challenge is added to the database, I want the probabilities of running to change dynamically. I want to avoid the scenario where I'm manually updating a database field just to change the probability from 10% to 5%, for example. Challenges act like Easter eggs. Challenge icons pop-up at different places on the webpage. User is awarded a badge for successfully completing a challenge, but only when it's active. There is some wait time between each challenge. Between 1 and 7 days. Which wait time is random, but the probability of the wait time being short is high and the probability of it being a long wait time is low.

  I want to start with an example illustrating my question. This way it takes more advantage out of the processor cache. struct movedata { vec3 position; vec3 rotation; }; struct drawdata { mesh model; imge texture; }; vector<movedata> movedatas; vector<drawdata> drawdatas; for(auto i = movedatas.begin(); i != movedatas.end(); ++i) { // modify position and rotation } for(auto i = drawdatas.begin(); i != drawdatas.end(); ++i) { // use model, texture, ... } But there comes a point where you need to find other properties according to an entity. For example if the car crashes, I do not need the drawdata and the movedata any more. So I need to delete the entries of this entity in all vectors. The entries are not linked by code.   Lets say I have 2 activities: A: A ListView displaying articles titles. Data is fetched from a web server and converted from XML to a list of ArticleSummary. Only user titles and id are returned by the server. Click on a title starts activity B. B: A form to edit an article. Article is fetched from server. When the user hits OK, modifications are sent to the server and activity closed. When the user go back to activity A, I would like to update the article title without any additional web request. I was thinking about the following solution: When article is modified, send a broadcast event with article id and new attributes values. Listen for this event on activity A Update the ArticleSummary object notify data changed on ListView Is there a better approach ?

• Windows Phone 7 Application + WCF + SSL + Username Authentication

  Hello, I have developed a test service with WCF, which I try to consume from a Windows Phone 7 Application, however when calling a method from the service I get a weird exception: There was no endpoint listening at https://server/Service.svc that could accept the message. This is often caused by an incorrect address or SOAP action. The WCF service uses a custom binding with UserNameOverTransport authentication and SSL. For the authorization I am using an implementation of the UserNamePasswordValidator. If I try to consume the service from a console or silverlight application (cross domain policy is enabled) - it works fine (authorization as well). And the most weird thing is that the ServiceReferences.ClientConfig file generated for the WP7 App is exactly the same as the config file generated for the silverlight application. I have no idea what is wrong with my service...

• Clickonce application does not update or launch.

  I have a winforms application that I have deployed using clickonce, but the users navigate to a network drive and double click on setup.msi instead of using a webpage to install it. I have two users that have it installed and it's worked in the past. I did an udpate last week and now when the users try to launch the application the window that says "Verifying Application Requirements" pops up then when it disappears nothing happens. The dialog asking if it's ok to update never pops up. The network people have verified that they have permissions on the network drive (though, I would expect an error message if this were the issue). Any clues what could cause this to happen?

• Best practice in Rails when editing scaffold made pages

  I have a best practice question. I have two classes, company and category. They have a many-to-many relationship. When clicking a category I shall go to a page showing all companies with the chosen category. Pretty straight forward. My question is: Should I list all the companies on the companies/index.html.erb after filtering the companies in the controller? or Should I list all the companies on the categories/show.html.erb page? or Should I do a completely new page, since it doesn't really fit into any of the two above? Do you generally make a new page when your goal doesn't fit the scaffold made pages or do you use them quite freely? I am working/learning alone with rails, so there are a lot of best practice questions popping up all the time. Cheers Carl

• drawbacks of storing all ''things' in a central table

  Hi, I am not sure if there is a term to describe this, but I have observed that content management systems store all kinds of data in a single table with their bare minimum properties while the meta data is stored in another table in form of key value pairs. for eg. everything (blog posts, pages, images, events etc) is stored in one table and considered as a post. I understand that this allows for abstraction and easy extensibility we are considering designing our new project this way. It is not exactly a CMS but we plan to keep adding modules to it in stages. Lets say initially there will be only posts and images on which comments can be posted. Later on we might add videos which will also have the commenting feature. what are the drawbacks of this approach ? and will it work for a requirement like ours ? Thanks

• Architectural Design for a Data-Driven Silverlight WP7 app

  I have a Silverlight Windows Phone 7 app that pulls data from a public API. I find myself doing much of the same thing over and over again: In the UI, set a loading message or loading progress bar in place of where the content is Get the content, which may be already in memory, cached in isolated file storage, or require an HTTP request If the content can not be acquired (no network connection, etc), display an error message If the content is acquired, display it in the UI Keep the content in main memory for subsequent queries The content that is displayed to the user can be taken directly from a data source, such as an ObservableCollection, or it may be a query on a data source. I would like to factor out this repetitive process into a framework where ideally only the following needs to be specified: Where to display the content in the UI The UI elements to show while loading, on failure, and on success The URI of the HTTP request How to parse the HTTP response into the data structure that will kept in memory The location of the file in isolated storage, if it exists How to parse the file contents into the data structure that will be kept in memory It may sound like a lot, but two strings, three FrameworkElements, and two methods is less than the overhead that I currently have. Also, this needs to work for however the data is maintained in memory, and needs to work for direct collections and queries on those collections. My questions are: Has something like this already been implemented? Are my thoughts about the topic above fundamentally wrong in some way? Here is a design I'm thinking of: There are two components, a View and a Model. The View is given the FrameworkElements for loading, failure, and success. It is also given a reference to the corresponding Model. The View is a UserControl that is placed somewhere in the UI. The Model a class that is given the URI for the data, a method of how to parse the data, and optionally a filename and how to parse the file. It is responsible for retrieving the data and notifying the View whenever the current status (loading/fail/success) changes. If the data downloaded from the network is different from the cache, the network data takes precedence. When the app closes or is tombstoned, the model writes the data to the cache. How does that sound?
