• Running a webserver behind a firewall, is it secure?

  Currently we have a Linux-based firewall which NAT-ing our public IP address to give internet access to our staff's PCs and a Windows Server 2003 for internal filesharing. I want to host Redmine/SVN (a bugtracker) internally behind this firewall using a Linux server. This webserver will be accessed by our clients externally so they can post bug reports. This means that I have to open port 80 & 22 at the firewall to give access to the webserver and me to SSH it from home. However, let's say I'm using password-based SSH for the webserver and somebody cracked it. Does that mean the cracker could ping and access other servers and PCs in the network?

• Ubuntu/Linux version recommendation for HP dv6 3122TX?

  I purchased a HP dv6 3122TX recently and after installing Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit I ran into multiple issues like, The wireless driver is not supported by Uubntu. (1) [The driver is RaLink RT3090 ] The ethernet stopped working sometimes for no reason [The driver is Realtek RTL8111/8168B ] "Corrupted low memory at ..." issue which is described as a kernel bug in Ubuntu support forums. (It started to take me to a terminal instead of the GUI and couldn't start x server after that) As I'm not an expert Ubuntu user I got fed up of all these issue and got back to Windows 7. But I need an Ubuntu installation up and running for my development work. What are your suggestions about a reasonable Ubuntu version that I should try? Or a different Linux variation? Should I stick to a 32-bit version? It'd be great anyone can give some advice on this issue.

• Server speed: sharing one script.php or using many copies the same script.php

  Let's assume: I have thousands of domains on same Apache server. Each domain is in a folder under server public_html document folder, so it can be accessed by calling "www.somedomain.com" or by calling "www.serverdomain.com/somedomain_folder" In each domain there is a website who needs a certain script.php (identical for each domain). From a coding point view, its obvious that it's better to use a unique script.php, so when i update it with new features/bug fixes etc, I need to update on server only one file and it will work for all domains. But from a server point of view? If i use a unique script all domains will access it at the same time, will the server run slower compared to the situation where each domain called its own script?

• port binding "problem" with Eclipse, Java, & Windows

  Hi All, I use eclipse to develop a web based java application. My normal course of business is grab the next task tracking ticket. If there is a problem that needs to correcting, I run the application locally, which loads of a Jetty webserver, and binds to port 8080. After verifying the problem, I fix the problem, rebuild, and the re-run the application. The problem is, I far too often forget to close the jetty server before re-running. This generates the Java bind error: WARNING: failed [email protected]:8080: java.net.BindException: Address already in use: JVM_Bind I work in Windows, and was looking to see if there is command I could run to un-bind the port, but couldn't find an answer there. Does anyone here have a good idea of how to fix my problem, other than remember to shut down the old jetty instance before starting a new one? Thanks, Jay

• How to fix Windows XP from muting sounds on every startup?

  This started to happen few days ago: Every time I start up my computer, the global sound volume ("Playback") is set to muted (from the checkbox), in the sound control panel. So I have to open the control panel every time i start up my computer, and click that checkbox. I have got this bug before, long time ago. I have no idea why is this happening. Any ideas how to fix this or what is causing it? I have SP 3 and most updates installed a half year ago or less.

• Windows XP failing to set theme correctly on auto-login

  On several testing machines we have, when automatic login (as Administrator) is activated, Windows fails to set theme (Display properties - Themes) correctly. Particularly, even if theme is set to "Windows Classic", visually it's obvious that "Windows XP" is applied (the one with blue title bars and red "X" butons). I have only seen this happen when Auto-login is set--we always use Administrator on XP. Even if I log out and back in manually, theme is set correctly. Apart from logging out and in, it's also possible to reset theme in "Display properties". It does not happen in 100% of the cases, but it's way over 50%. Definitely it's often enough to be annoying. I believe this is a bug in Windows XP. I have never encountered it on other Windows versions. Does anybody know how to avoid this issue once forever? (Or can anybody provide explanation, relevant links, etc.?)

• Singelton on iPhone Simulator vs Singelton on real Device

  I am using a Singelton for some shared stuff. In the simulator, the app crashes ocasionally. Tracking the crash down shows that the the properties of my Singelton became dealocated. Those crashes never happend on a real device. Does the iPHone simulator handle memory managemend different? GC maybe? Changed the singelton to match this pattern. The iPhone Simulator dont crash now, but I am not sure about the memory handling on the real device. I assume that this solution will cause problems. What do you think?

• Have parameters in Dao methods to get entities the most efficient way for read-only access

  Allot of my use of hibernate, at least for that data that is presented on many parts of the web application, is for read-only purposes. I want to add some parameters to my Dao methods so I can modify the way hibernate pulls the data and how it handles transactions etc. Example usage: Data on the front page of my website is displayed to the users, it is read-only, so I want to avoid any session/entity tracking that hibernate usually does. This is data that is read-only, will not be changed in this transaction, etc. What would be the most performant way to pull the data? • QGraphicsItem doesn't receive mouse hover events

  I have a class derived from QGraphicsView, which contains QGraphicsItem-derived elements. I want these elements to change color whenever the mouse cursor hovers over them, so I implemented hoverEnterEvent (and hoverLeaveEvent): void MyGraphicsItem::hoverEnterEvent(QGraphicsSceneHoverEvent* event) { update (boundingRect()); } However, this event handler code is never executed. I've explicitly enabled mouse tracking: MyGraphicsView::MyGraphicsView(MainView *parent) : QGraphicsView(parent) { setMouseTracking(true); viewport()->setMouseTracking(true); ... } Still, no luck. What am I doing wrong?

• What Windows message is fired for mouse-up with modifier keys?

  My WndProc isn't seeing mouse-up notifications when I click with a modifier key (shift or control) pressed. I see them without the modifier key, and I see mouse-down notifications with the modifier keys. I'm using the Windows Forms NativeWindow wrapper to get Windows messages from the WndProc() method. I've tried tracking the notifications I do get, and I the only clue I see is WM_CAPTURECHANGED. I've tried calling SetCapture when I receive the WM_LBUTTONDOWN message, but it doesn't help. Without modifier (skipping paint, timer and NCHITTEST messages): WM_LBUTTONDOWN WM_SETCURSOR WM_MOUSEMOVE WM_SETCURSOR WM_LBUTTONUP With modifier (skipping paint, timer and NCHITTEST messages): WM_KEYDOWN WM_PARENTNOTIFY WM_MOUSEACTIVATE WM_MOUSEACTIVATE WM_SETCURSOR WM_LBUTTONDOWN WM_SETCURSOR (repeats) WM_KEYDOWN (repeats) WM_KEYUP If I hold the mouse button down for a long time, I can usually get a WM_LBUTTONUP notification, but it should be possible to make it more responsive..   The problem with our server is that we need to use the bug ridden and awful AT&T network client, which causes our server to bluescreen once per 24 hours. Does any one know how to (or has a good guide) quickly set up a workstation running Windows server 2008 R2 as a proxy server. So this spare workstation would run AT&T and would act as a bridge between our server and the server that can be connected to only via the AT&T VPN software. And this way our own production server would not crash so often (or not at all) and the workstation can happily crash whenever it wants to.

• FLOT: How to make different colored points in same data series, connected by a line?

  Hi all, I think I may have stumbled onto a limitation of Flot, but I'm not sure. I'm trying to represent a single data series over time. The items' "State" is represented on the Y-Axis (there are 5 of them), and time is on the X-Axis (items can change states over time). I want the graph to have points and lines connecting those points for each data series. In addition to tracking an item's State over time, I'd also like to represent it's "Status" at any of the particular points. This I would like to do by changing the color of the points. What this means is a single item may have different Statuses at different times, meaning for a single data series I need a line that connects different points (dots) of different colors. The only thing I've seen so far is the ability to specify the color for all points in a given dataseries. Does anyone know if there's a way to specify colors individually? Thanks.

  By default, Glassfish v3 doesn't set the httpOnly flag on session cookies (when created as usual with request.getSession()). I know, there is a method javax.servlet.SessionCookieConfig.setHttpOnly(), but I'm not sure, if that's the best way to do it, and if yes, where the best place would be to put that line. BTW, of course it can't be done in the servlet itself (e.g. in init()): java.lang.IllegalStateException: PWC1426: Unable to configure httpOnly session tracking cookie property for servlet context /..., because this servlet context has already been initialized Generally, I would prefer to use a configuration option e.g. in web.xml.

  I need to deal with Affiliate Tracking on our website. In our .htaccess we have: RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} affiliate=(.*) RewriteRule ^(.*)$ $1? [NC,R,L,co=AFFID:%1:%{HTTP:Host}:7200:/] Which creates a COOKIE called AFFID with the value of the URL Parameter affiliate. But the Cookie is not for the whole domain, i.e. Going to http://www.domain.com/?affiliate=bmk sets the AFFID cookie with the value bmk for .www.domain.com but I would like ti to be for .domain.com so that it can be used across our secure domain which will be secure.domain.com Any help would be appreciated Cheers

• Recommend a Rackspace Cloud Server API Language Binding?

  Rackspace publishes only a hard-to-use HTTP and JSON/XML based "API" (they call it an API but it's really a non-standard Web Service without a WSDL). There are dozens of open-source language bindings to choose from. I have tried three of them so far and they're all horrible (incomplete, buggy, and/or undocumented). Can anybody recommend a language binding which is reasonably complete, well documented, and bug-free? I can use Perl, Python, PHP, or Java. My ultimate objective is to create a script/program that will provision a server, launch a process inside it, wait for the process to finish, copy the results to the local server, and destroy the remote server. What's the best choice for that? Thanks

• How Do You Parse Column Data ?

  I am trying to parse a file generated by LGA Tracon that lists the position data for aircraft over a given time frame. The data of interest starts with TRACKING DATA and ends with SST and there are thousands of entries per file. The system generating the file, Common ARTS, is very rigid in its formatting and we can expect the column spacing to be consistent. Any help would be greatly appreciated. • Rsync : execute permission required

  I'm using rsync between two servers to transfer files. The problem is some files are not transferred. I get this error : rsync: readlink "/var/www/index.html" failed: Permission denied (13) So I check permissions on the server and after make tests, I notice a file is transferred only if it has these permissions : R-W ! If the file have these permissions : R--, Rsync can't download it !? Command: /usr/bin/rsync -avzr -e "/usr/bin/ssh -i /home/replication/thishost-rsync-key" [email protected]:/var/www/index.html ./ Is it a bug with Rsync ? I find any information about this problem. • Build Google App Engine Java source from Eclipse

  I would like to try to build Google App Engine for Java from source. I have tried this: I don't know how to solve the javac Ant task. I am on Mac OS X 10.6.8. The reason why I am trying to to create a Java Project from the source is that when I try to debug/step-into the sources downloaded from SVN, something is wrong in Eclipse and it does not track execution at the right code line. It seems to be executing "comment lines"? So I don't get an accurate tracking of the code path. I think what I would ideally need is: 1) svn checkout command with matching REV number of latest SDK 2) wget command downloading matching jar

• What service can hold CPU at lowest frequency possible when on battery load under Ubuntu?

  When I'm running on battery even with "performance" frequency scaling governor, something regularly lowers CPU speed to it's lowest value. I don't really want that, my AC strip usually in another room so I don't really need to save power. How can I find what service doing that? laptop_mode is disabled so that's not it. Update: Looks like CPU being scaled down only if it is under load. If it is more or less idle, it could stay on any frequency pretty much forever, but once it gets loaded, it quickly jumps to it's lowest frequency. • How to disable auto-assume in Google Chrome

  I've noticed that whenever I sign in in Google Chrome version 21.0 it automatically assumes and it automatically knows what I want to search. I basically use the address bar to search(my default search engine is Google) I don't go type Google.com on the address bar and then search from there. So what happens is that when I type something for example "vernier" for vernier caliper I'm automatically redirected to my facebook account which has a user account name of vern.ancheta. It's really getting annoying, this happens for every search term that I used maybe even ones that I haven't used before in my entire search history in Google. It always assumes as if it knows what I'm really thinking. What's the solution for this? Is this a bug in Google Chrome or just one of its annoying features. Please enlighten me on this.

• Firefox loses app tabs when I shut down my computer sometimes

  When I shut down my computer sometimes my app tabs do not reopen in Firefox and I need to remake all of them which is pretty annoying. I don't know if this is a common bug it might be specific to my computer. I run Vista x64 and it just seems to still have quite a bit of problems. Sometimes when I command it to shut down it does not simply showing shut down loading for hours so I need to manually turn it off. I think that might be messing up Firefox but I'm not sure. I also found a related thread on Bugzilla about this problem but I don't think it's the same issue as it only happens when I shut down my computer.

• Deleting sender from Outlook Safe Senders using GPO?

  We're having an external company do a mailshot to our users. The message contains images that are linked rather than embedded in the image (bandwidth isn't an issue). So of course on recent versions of Outlook you're prompted to download the images, not the end of the world, but it would be nice if that didn't happen. There's a bug in the Office/Outlook ADM/ADMX templates that means that a custom list of Safe Senders won't import unless you follow this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2252421 Thing is, if I remove an entry from the Safe Senders file, it doesn't seem to remove it from Outlook, which seems odd?

  I'm trying to use uWSGI with a virtual env in order to use the Trac bug tracker on it. I've installed system-wide uwsgi via pip. Next, I've installed trac in a virtualenv $ virtualenv venv $ . venv/bin/activate $ pip install trac I've then written a simple uWSGI configuration script: [uwsgi] master = true processes = 1 socket = localhost:3032 home = /srv/http/trac/venv/ no-site = true gid = www-data uid = www-data env = TRAC_ENV=/srv/http/trac/projects/my_project module = trac.web.main:dispatch_request But when I try to launch it, it fails: $ uwsgi --http :8000 --ini /etc/uwsgi/vassals-available/my_project.ini --gid www-data --uid www-data ... Set PythonHome to /srv/http/trac/venv/ ... *** Operational MODE: single process *** ImportError: No module named trac.web.main unable to load app 0 (mountpoint='') (callable not found or import error) I think uWSGI isn't using the virtual env. When inside the virtual env, I can import trac.web.main without having an ImportError. How can I do that ? Thanks

  Courtesy of goal.com Check the pointer that I drew. It doesn't point the right arrow (-), however, it looks like hover on that arrow (arrow turns into green color). Moreover, when I press at that area, it will be directed to link that is specified by that button. Another bug is on the scroll bar. The display show the scroll bar is shifted left, so there is a gap. However, the area that can be clicked remain at the right end of the page.
