  • Installing Ubuntu by writing on the Hard Drive

    I have a laptop whose CD drive is not operational and is too old to boot from a flash stick. I have bought a new hard drive for it for which I have an enclosure. Is there a way to configure the disk as an external to my current ubuntu setup, copy some form of ubuntu on the hard drive, place the HD in the old laptop, and have ubuntu install ubuntu from there? Effectively what I am asking about is some sort of live cd that installs on itself (since the HD is writeable).

    The CPU temperature under Ubuntu 12.10 is significantly higher than under Windows 7 doing similar tasks. For example, the CPU temperature under Windows when watching flash videos is around 50-60 degrees, under Ubuntu it is between 65-75. In idle mode in Ubuntu it is usually around 50. I use an i3 core and an integrated graphics. Is there a way to lower the temperature? And I don't mean via Jupiter as this doesn't work for watching videos..

  • Unsafe shutdown on power button press (Ubuntu Server 13.10)

    I have Ubuntu Server 13.10 set up on a machine, and whenever I press (not press and hold) the power button the machine doesn't safely shutdown (it instantly powers off), though it does flash the message "acpid: exiting" before turning off. If I instead run shutdown -h now, it goes through the usual cycle of stopping processes, unmounting filesystems, etc... Any ideas why this might be? I want the power button to safely shut down the system (unless I hold it down, of course).

    I use CyanogenMod and ClockWork Recovery on my Nexus 7. How can my existing full nandroid backup be used to restore my device after installing Ubuntu? The instructions assume "recovery" would mean re-flashing the vanilla image, at factory, data-wiped condition. It would be useful to provide a .zip that can be flash via Clockwork (or other) recovery and back to whatever Nandroid backup there is - much as any other ROM is provided/used.

    I tried the answers from previous posts without luck. I'm using ubuntu 10.04.4 and youtube shows a black screen, no video and no sound . I uninstalled adobe flash player closed down and reinstalled but it didn’t help. I have run Mint 13 on the same computer and it will play youtube without a problem. I'm not familier with linux language . Using comands in terminal might make everything terminal if I try!

    There is a sound typically associated with a bright flash of light, which starts with a lower whirring noise, then breaks into a higher pitched sound. What is that type of sound called? I'm not sure how to begin searching for that, so a typical name for it would be very helpful.     I'm looking to add circle-polygon collisions to my Separating Axis Theorem collision detection. The metanet software tutorial (http://www.metanetsoftware.com/technique/tutorialA.html#section3) on SAT, which I discovered in the answer to a question I found when searching, talks about voronoi regions. I'm having trouble finding material on how I would calculate these regions for an arbitrary convex polygon and aleo how I would determine if a point is in one + which. The tutorial does contain source code but it's a .fla and I don't have Flash unfortunately.

I click on suspend accidentally and HD led continues flash, but I tried to press any key keyboard, and CTL-ALT-PS R-E-I-S-U-B and power button, but can not wake up computer.
