  • Samba authentication problem when attempting to connect from Windows client

    - by Camsoft
I've got a Linux server running Ubuntu and Samba. I've created two shares in Samba that point to directories that are owned by the user "cameron". When I attempt to connect to these shares on Windows 7 is connects and allows me to see the files but they are read-only. This is the desired action for guest users but not for authenticated users. My user on the Windows client is "Cameron" and has the same password as the Linux user "cameron". I don't think my Windows user has authenticated against the Linux user. I even created a users.map file to map the user cameron (linux) to Cameron (windows) but still it does not work. Here is my samba config file (UPDATED): [global] server string = %h server (Samba, Ubuntu) map to guest = Bad User passwd program = /usr/bin/passwd %u passwd chat = *Enter\snew\s*\spassword:* %n\n *Retype\snew\s*\spassword:* %n\n *password\supdated\ssuccessfully* . username map = /etc/samba/users.map syslog = 0 log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m max log size = 1000 os level = 65 preferred master = Yes dns proxy = No wins support = Yes usershare allow guests = Yes panic action = /usr/share/samba/panic-action %d valid users = cameron write list = cameron [www] path = /usr/local/apache2/htdocs write list = @www-data force group = www-data guest ok = Yes [cameron] path = /home/cameron write list = @www-data force group = www-data guest ok = Yes

I am using FreeNAS on my lan to do some file/iTunes sharing but I'd like to add printer sharing to it so that I can stop using a second (aging windows) system. I'm not familiar with BSDs but I am comfortable with the shell (I'm a Debian admin) are there any good tutorials for setting up printer sharing (cups?) on FreeNAS?

  • Tomcat 6 IP restrictions

    - by KB22
I need to protect a certain folder within a web application of mine from access from outside of an defined IP range. With O'Reilly's Tomcat Tips I figured that: <Context path="/path/to/secret_files" ...> <Valve className="org.apache.catalina.valves.RemoteAddrValve" allow="127.0.0.1" deny=""/> </Context> Is the way to go? I'm not that much into tomcat configuration so I'm dazzled a little as to where to put these restrictions. Do I put this Within my web.xml or is this a thing I need to add to some general tomcat conf file?

  • /scripts/easyapache broke PHP and now outputs binary

    - by James Lawrie
    I ran /scripts/easyapache on one of my cpanel servers last night and since then PHP just gives 501 errors, which no logs I can find. I tried running it again and it's running as normal but all output has been replaced with strange characters, eg: ????+?+± °?? ?-?.?... =?? ????+?+± °?? ¦+?+?.?... =?? ????+?+± °?? ?=?/¦+?+?.?... +? ????+?+± °?? ?=?/??++.?... =?? ????+?+± °?? ??++.?... =?? ????+?+± °?? ???+?+.?... +? ????+?+± °?? ?=?/????¦???.?... =?? ????+?+± °?? +??±?+.?... =?? ????+?+± °?? +??¦+?.?... =?? Has anyone come across this before? Is it fixable?

  • Can Windows-Security-SPP block execution of .exe?

    - by Kirk Marple
We're seeing a strange situation, where some executables won't run from a Windows command prompt (running as admin). Just running the command (say, filename.exe) gives no response on the console. No errors, no output, nothing. If we copy over the same Windows .exe from a different folder, it "magically" starts working, and we see the default console output. (Happens both on Win7 x64, and Win2008R2 x64. Application is running as 32-bit process.) At the time when it accesses the .exe, I can see events in the application and system logs regarding Windows-Security-SPP, and it makes me believe that the .exe is being blocked from execution. Does this sound familiar?

  • ESXi 5.1 ghettoVCB stuck at Clone: 10% done

    - by stormdrain
Trying to run ghettoVCB for the first time here. I am using a NAS that is set up as a datastore on the host. I did a dry run and it completed without error. The VM is ~500GB and there is only one on the host that I'm trying to backup. I proceeded to start the actual backup: ./ghettoVCB.sh -m vmname -g ghettoVCB.conf It goes though the config and looks like it's taking off: 2013-10-24 11:43:19 -- info: CONFIG - USING GLOBAL GHETTOVCB CONFIGURATION FILE = ghettoVCB.conf 2013-10-24 11:43:19 -- info: CONFIG - VERSION = 2013_01_11_0 2013-10-24 11:43:19 -- info: CONFIG - GHETTOVCB_PID = 17398616 2013-10-24 11:43:19 -- info: CONFIG - VM_BACKUP_VOLUME = /vmfs/volumes/nas2tb-001/esxi4 2013-10-24 11:43:19 -- info: CONFIG - VM_BACKUP_ROTATION_COUNT = 3 2013-10-24 11:43:19 -- info: CONFIG - VM_BACKUP_DIR_NAMING_CONVENTION = 2013-10-24_11-43-18 2013-10-24 11:43:19 -- info: CONFIG - DISK_BACKUP_FORMAT = thin 2013-10-24 11:43:19 -- info: CONFIG - POWER_VM_DOWN_BEFORE_BACKUP = 0 2013-10-24 11:43:19 -- info: CONFIG - ENABLE_HARD_POWER_OFF = 0 2013-10-24 11:43:19 -- info: CONFIG - ITER_TO_WAIT_SHUTDOWN = 4 2013-10-24 11:43:19 -- info: CONFIG - POWER_DOWN_TIMEOUT = 5 2013-10-24 11:43:19 -- info: CONFIG - SNAPSHOT_TIMEOUT = 15 2013-10-24 11:43:19 -- info: CONFIG - LOG_LEVEL = info 2013-10-24 11:43:19 -- info: CONFIG - BACKUP_LOG_OUTPUT = /tmp/ghettoVCB-2013-10-24_11-43-18-17398616.log 2013-10-24 11:43:19 -- info: CONFIG - ENABLE_COMPRESSION = 0 2013-10-24 11:43:19 -- info: CONFIG - VM_SNAPSHOT_MEMORY = 0 2013-10-24 11:43:19 -- info: CONFIG - VM_SNAPSHOT_QUIESCE = 0 2013-10-24 11:43:19 -- info: CONFIG - ALLOW_VMS_WITH_SNAPSHOTS_TO_BE_BACKEDUP = 0 2013-10-24 11:43:19 -- info: CONFIG - VMDK_FILES_TO_BACKUP = all 2013-10-24 11:43:19 -- info: CONFIG - VM_SHUTDOWN_ORDER = 2013-10-24 11:43:19 -- info: CONFIG - VM_STARTUP_ORDER = 2013-10-24 11:43:19 -- info: CONFIG - EMAIL_LOG = 0 2013-10-24 11:43:19 -- info: 2013-10-24 11:43:22 -- info: Initiate backup for vmname 2013-10-24 11:43:22 -- info: Creating Snapshot "ghettoVCB-snapshot-2013-10-24" for serv2 Destination disk format: VMFS thin-provisioned Cloning disk '/vmfs/volumes/esxi4-storage/vmname/vmname_1.vmdk'... Clone: 10% done. and it's been that way for over an hour now. Stuck at Clone: 10% done.. Thing is: I can see the vmdk on the NAS. And it looks like almost the whole thing is there. On the NAS it's showing ~430GB but on vSphere Client Summary is shows as 507GB. I don't see the vmdk on the NAS growing any more. The logfile mimics some of the above and is sitting at "Creating Snapshot..." and nothing else is coming in. Is the vmdk on the NAS showing all those GB because of the provisioning or something? i.e. is the size of the file not necessarily indicative of the amount of actual data that has been copied? Is there are reason it might be "Stuck" at 10%? i.e. could it really be taking this long? Any other tips? Thanks. Edit: as soon as I hit the Submit button, I glance over to see that it has incremented to 11% done. Good to know it'll be complete sometime around when the sun explodes.

  • Differencing Disks in VirtualBox

    - by PhilPursglove
I'm struggling to understand how to do differencing disks in VirtualBox v3.1.0. I've created a Windows 2008 Server, but now I want to use that as a base image for a number of other servers. The help file has a description of what differencing disks are, but I can't find where it actually tells you how to do it. In the Storage dialog for a server I found the Differencing Disks checkbox: but when I check it, I'd expect it to then ask which image should be the parent so I could select my base image. Any pointers you can offer would be greatly appreciated!

  • Setting up multiple servers for one domain

    - by Joseph Torraca
So I am starting up a new website and I was wondering how to set up 5 servers to host the site. I have already purchased 5 Apple XServes, one will be used as a test server and the other 4 will be for the live site. So I have read some website on the internet and they all reference using one server and installing software onto it and have that server do the load balancing. I have also read that you could use a hardware, rack-mounted system and plug the servers into that. The load balancer would then distribute the load. So I have a few questions about each: 1) How do you set up the software version and have the other servers as "slaves" and have one "master" to direct traffic? 2) Which of the two options above are more reliable, and better suited for a startup that doesn't have many users per month, yet(hopefully)? 3) Is there a theoretical max limit of servers that can be connected to a software load balancing system? Note: Obviously this will change from software to software, but in terms of the server being able to handle it? 4) In your own opinion, what are you using for your sites? Have you had any problems setting up that system or operating it once its running? Are there any things you would stay away from if you had to start over? 5) I also purchased a Apple RAID system, so if you are familiar with it, is there any way to connect it to multiple Xserves so they all serve the same data? I'm a little confused on this, so thanks for all your help and being patient with me. Note: Take it easy on me, I am learning this as I go along, so I may have used terms incorrectly or explained things that don't really make sense. Sorry. P.S. If you need me to supply the specs on the servers to determine which system makes the most sense, I can post them for you.

  • 3G/Edge/GPRS IP addresses and geocoding

    - by LookitsPuck
Hey all! So, we're looking to develop a mobile website. On this mobile website, we'd like to automatically populate a user's location (with proper fallback) based on their IP address. I'm aware of geocoding a location based on IP address (mapping to latitude, longitude and then getting the location with that information). However, I'm curious how accurate this information is? Are mobile devices assigned IP's when they utilize 3G, EDGE, and GPRS connections? I think so. If that is so, does it map to a relatively accurate location? It doesn't have to be spot on, but relatively accurate would be nice. Thanks! -Steve

  • IIS 301 Redirect from "/index.html" to "/" for SEO Canonicalization

    - by brainbolt
I used the technique explained here for IIS (http://www.webconfs.com/how-to-redirect-a-webpage.php), but this appears to result in an infinite loop when applied to "/index.htm" and redirected to "/". Is there another way to do this in IIS so that it doesn't loop infinitely? This page is static HTML, so I can't implement an ASP or ASP.net solution. Any ideas?

  • Vmware Player 3.0 - cannot ping 32 bits guest from 64 bits (guest or host)

    - by npmj
I'm stuck with what seems a bug in VmWare Player (build 203739). I'm using W7 Ultimate 64bits as host and have a CentOS 5.4 (64 bits) as a guest and a Windows XP Professional SP3 (32 bits) as another guest. From the 64 bits machines (the host and the linux guest) I cannot ping the windows XP. Off course, I already turned off the windows firewall in the guest and also in the host. The network is pretty basic, I'm using Vmnet8 (NAT), with DHCP and port forwarding (to the windows XP's IP). Everything is working ok, I have internet access from host and from both guests. Port forwarding to the XP guest is working ok too. The only problem is that I cannot access the XP guest through the Vmnet8. I monitored the traffic using wireshark (in the host and in the windows guest). If I try to ping the XP guest from the host, what I see is the ARP request leaving the host, being answered by the guest and, after that, there is no echo request leaving the host. The same occurs if I try to ping the XP from the CentOs guest. From the windows XP guest I can ping both the host and the CentOs guest. From the XP guest I can access the host shares. Obviously, from the host I cannot see the XP shares (as I cannot even ping the guest). I want to maintain this setup (using NAT to share the host's internet connection). Any suggestions?

  • OpenSSL x509 Purpose flag "Any Purpose" What is this?

    - by Nick
Looking at the details of a certificate using the following: openssl x509 -noout -text -purpose -in mycert.pem I find a bunch of purpose flags (which I've discovered are set by the various extensions attached to a certificate). One of these purpose flags is "Any Purpose". I can't seem to find ANY documentation on this flag and why or why not it is set. Do any of you know where I can find more information on this purpose and what it means? Thanks,

  • How do I obtain a valid DNS resolution given just an IP address?

    - by Dee Newcum
Is there a publicly-available DNS server somewhere that will respond to requests like: 74_125_225_50.anyip.com And will return 74.125.225.50 for the above request? That is, every single possible IP address can queried by name instead of number. http://ipq.co/ is close to what I'm looking for, but it requires you to first register an IP address before you can query its DNS name. I want a service that does a straightforward mapping from domain name to IP address. Why do I want to do this? I have a program that we use at work that requires a DNS lookup, but I need to be able to give it bare IP addresses. (long story... it's a server that I don't control, so I can't work around it using /etc/hosts)

  • Calculating and billing IP multicast usage on the Internet

    - by obvio171
I've been searching for the reasons why IP multicast isn't widely supported on the Public Internet, and a commonly-cited reason is the difficulty ISPs have in tracking Multicast usage for later billing. Given this difficulty, since ISPs control the routers and they're not forced to support Multicast (as per IPv4), they just disable it. I couldn't find what this difficulty was though. Since an ISP has full control of any inbound and outbound traffic, be it Unicast or Multicast, what's the difficulty in tracking and billing the latter that does not exist in the former?

  • Switch smarthosts in Exchange when using dual WAN

    - by mat0ng
Hi everybody, I'd like to know if it's possible to setup Exchange 2003/2007 to switch between smarthosts, based on the WAN connection currently in use. Example scenario: I have two WAN connections with different ISP's. Exchange is running behind a dual WAN router. The router is setup to fall back to secondary WAN when primary WAN fails. The smarthost set in Exchange is the SMTP server of the primary ISP. Because the smarthost set in Exchange only allows relaying from IP's of the primary WAN sending mail won't work when the router falls back to the secondary WAN. Sending mail directly through DNS MX lookup is an option but the ISP's have dynamic IP's that get blacklisted a lot. Thanks in advance!

  • OpenJDK vs. Sun Java6 on Ubuntu

    - by Mark Renouf
Due to past (bad) experience resulting from the GCJ stuff being provided by default on certain distributions, I've always traditionally installed the official Sun Java package on servers. On Ubuntu it's been easy but now OpenJDK is a preferred option and easier to install... I wonder: is there any reason not to use it instead? As far as I understand it's the open source version of the Sun JDK.

  • likewise-open and samba as pdc

    - by Knight Samar
Hi, We have successfully implemented a Samba Primary Domain Controller for a hybrid Windows-Linux environment. So now I am setting up dual-boot clients with Windows XP and Ubuntu 9.10. Windows XP can be easily added to the Samba Domain. Everything is manageable. No worries. But when I try using likewise-open 4.1 to add the Ubuntu 9.10 to the samba domain, it cannot locate the domain controller. domainjoin-cli --loglevel verbose join MYDOMAIN root Error: Unable to resolve DC name [code 0x00080026] Resolving 'MYDOMAIN' failed. Check that the domain name is correctly entered. Also check that your DNS server is reachable, and that your system is configured to use DNS in nsswitch. I even tried mydomain.com variations but to no avail. What am I missing ? I read up a document on MSDN wherein it says that the Domain Controller creates some SRV records in the DNS server. I guess, I don't have them on my BIND. Do you think that is the problem ? If yes, can anyone please point out how and what SRV records need to be added. Thanks.
