• List of fonts installed by default in versions of Windows?

  I've been seeing more and more websites using fancy antialiased fonts. Every time I hit one, I think to myself "hmm, what web-safe font is that?" - but after looking at the CSS I typically find some font name in quotes, like "Palatino Linotype". Obviously not web-safe, but according to the Wikipedia article, "Palatino Linotype is shipped with Windows 2000 or later, and Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003." So that covers what, 95% of users that might visit your website? And thanks to the power of CSS, the website can fallback to a similar generic font typename such as 'serif' for non-Windows users with a line like this: font: 16px/20px "Palatino Linotype", serif; Awesome! I want to start using fancy fonts! Is there a set of lists out there, of the fonts that are preinstalled by default in Windows 98, 2000, NT, ME, XP, 2003, etc., and maybe for the Mac OSX versions and various Linux distributions as well? It would be a great reference for picking web font faces! (if not, someone should compile it!) I had never before heard of Palatino Linotype and I want to know what other fonts have existed since old Windows versions that I've never known about!

• What OOP pattern to use when only adding new methods, not data?

  Hello eveyone... In my app, I have deal with several different "parameters", which derive from IParameter interface, and also ParamBase abstract base class. I currently have two different parameter types, call them FooParameter and BarParameter, which both derive from ParamBase. Obviously, I can treat them both as IParameters when I need to deal with them generically, or detect their specific type when I need to handle their specific functionality. My question lies in specific FooParameters. I currently have a few specific ones with their own classes which derive from FooParameter, we'll call them FP12, FP13, FP14, etc. These all have certain characteristics, which make me treat them differently in the UI. (Most have names associated with the individual bits, or ranges of bits). Note that these specific, derived FP's have no additional data associated with them, only properties (which refer to the same data in different ways) or methods. Now, I'd like to keep all of these parameters in a Dictionary<String, IParameter> for easy generic access. The problem is, if I want to refer to a specific one with the special GUI functions, I can't write: FP12 fp12 = (FP12)paramList["FP12"] because you can't downcast to a derived type (rightfully so). But in my case, I didn't add any data, so the cast would theoretically work. What type of programming model should I be using instead? Thanks!

• Django: Applying Calculations To A Query Set

  I have a QuerySet that I wish to pass to a generic view for pagination: links = Link.objects.annotate(votes=Count('vote')).order_by('-created')[:300] This is my "hot" page which lists my 300 latest submissions (10 pages of 30 links each). I want to now sort this QuerySet by an algorithm that HackerNews uses: (p - 1) / (t + 2)^1.5 p = votes minus submitter's initial vote t = age of submission in hours Now because applying this algorithm over the entire database would be pretty costly I am content with just the last 300 submissions. My site is unlikely to be the next digg/reddit so while scalability is a plus it is required. My question is now how do I iterate over my QuerySet and sort it by the above algorithm?   I've been looking at parsing a key-value data format with ANTLR. Pretty straightforward, but the keys represent a hierarchy. • Problems migrating databinding in VB.NET from Winforms to ASP.NET 2.0

  And this was supposed to be so easy... I have existing business and data access layers that handle the retrieval and update of the data in question. These work great with the existing Winforms application (.Net V2.0) Now, in trying to write a new web-based UI, I'm running into all sorts of problems (last time I wrote asp.net code was in 1.1). Specifically, I can't data bind a text box to a business object. Oh, sure there's the ObjectDataSource but that wants to know how to do CRUD operations on the data. What I'm looking for is something that acts like the 'classic' binding objects so that, in my code, it's as simple as retrieving the object and doing a a refresh. The data component like FormView and DetailsView are so generic-looking that it's ridiculous. The existing application would have tabbed dialogs, text boxes grouped by panels, etc. On top of that, I have a directive to use master pages and unless one control causes it, I can't seem to get the content section to expand. I can't just put a text box 'below' the bottom of "Content1" and have it resize the content section - which gives me the same results as an earlier question I posted when the footer wasn't being 'pushed down' - relative position solved that but doesn't seem to solve it with placing small text boxes in the area. What I want is fairly simple. Something like: bindingobject.datasource = businessdataobject bindingobject.refresh ...and have the text boxes refresh with the new values. Likewise to have 'businessdataobject' properties updated as the user enters new data. I was able to do this with the GridView (grdRequests.DataSource = lstRequests) by making a list of asp:BoundField tags inside the collection of the GridView. Am I tilting at windmills here?

• Getting the data inside the C# web service from Jsonified string

  In my JS I use Jquery's $ajax functions to call the web service and send the jsonified data to it. The data is in the following format: var countries = { "1A": { id: "1A", name: "Andorra" }, "2B": { id: 2B name: "Belgium" }, ..etc }; var jsonData = JSON.stringify({ data: data }); //then $ajax is called and it makes the call to the c# web service On the c# side the web service needs to unpack this data, currently it comes in as string[][] data type. How do I convert it to the format so I can refer to the properties such as .id and .name? Assuming I have a class called Sample with these properties? Thanks! • Trying to calculate large numbers in Python with gmpy. Python keeps crashing?

  I was recommended to use gmpy to assist with calculating large numbers efficiently. Before I was just using python and my script ran for a day or two and then ran out of memory (not sure how that happened because my program's memory usage should basically be constant throughout.. maybe a memory leak?) Anyways, I keep getting this weird error after running my program for a couple seconds: mp_allocate< 545275904->545275904 > Fatal Python error: mp_allocate failure This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information. Also, python crashes and Windows 7 gives me the generic python.exe has stopped working dialog. This wasn't happening with using standard python integers. Now that I switch to gmpy I am getting this error just seconds in to running my script. I thought gmpy was specialized in dealing with large number arithmetic? For reference, here is a sample program that produces the error: import gmpy2 p = gmpy2.xmpz(3000000000) s = gmpy2.xmpz(2) M = s**p for x in range(p): s = (s * s) % M I have 10 gigs of RAM and without gmpy this script ran for days without running out of memory (still not sure how that happened considering s never really gets larger.. Anyone have any ideas? EDIT: Forgot to mention I am using Python 3.2

• Rails: using find method to access joined tables for polymorphic relationships

  Ok, I have a generic TimeSlot model that deals with a start_at and an end_at for time spans. A couple models derive from this but I'm referring to one in this question: AppointmentBlock which is a collection of Appointments. I want to validate an AppointmentBlock such that no other AppointmentBlocks have been scheduled for a particular Employee in the same time frame. Since AppointmentBlock has a polymorphic association with TimeSlot, you have to access the AppointmentBlock's start_at and end_at through the TimeSlot like so: appt_block.time_slot.start_at This means that I need to have some kind of join in my :conditions for my find() method call. Here is my code so far: #inside my appointment_block.rb model validate :employee_not_double_booked def employee_not_double_booked unless self.employee_id # this find's condition is incorrect because I need to join time_slots to get access # to start_at and end_at. • Stupid newbie c++ two-dimensional array problem.

  I've no idea if this is too newbie or generic for stackoverlflow. Apologies if that's the case, I don't intend to waste time. I've just started working through C++ Primer Plus and I've hit a little stump. The rest of the code works fine: input is fine, individual yearly output is fine but I just can't get 3 years added together for one final total. I did have the total working at one point but I didn't have the individual totals working. I messed with it and reversed the situation. I've been messing with it for God knows how long. Any idea guys? Sorry if this isn't the place!

• How Can I Find a List of All Exceptions That a Given Library Function Throws in Python?

  Sorry for the long title, but it seems most descriptive for my question. Basically, I'm having a difficult time finding exception information in the official python documentation. For example, in one program I'm currently writing, I'm using the shutil libary's move function: from shutil import move move('somefile.txt', '/tmp/somefile.txt') That works fine, as long as I have write access to /tmp/, there is enough diskspace, and if all other requirements are satisfied. However, when writing generic code, it is often difficult to guarantee those factors, so one usually uses exceptions: from shutil import move try: move('somefile.txt', '/tmp/somefile.txt') except: print 'Move failed for some reason.' I'd like to actually catch the appropriate exceptions thrown instead of just catching everything, but I simply can't find a list of exceptions thrown for most python modules. Is there a way for me to see which exceptions a given function can throw, and why? This way I can make appropriate cases for each exception, eg: from shutil import move try: move('somefile.txt', '/tmp/somefile.txt') except PermissionDenied: print 'No permission.' except DestinationDoesNotExist: print "/tmp/ doesn't exist" except NoDiskSpace: print 'No diskspace available.' Answer points go to whoever can either link me to some relevant documentation that I've somehow overlooked in the official docs, or provide a sure-fire way to figure out exactly which exceptions are thrown by which functions, and why. • DataSets to POCOs - an inquiry regarding DAL architecture

  Hello all, I have to develop a fairly large ASP.NET MVC project very quickly and I would like to get some opinions on my DAL design to make sure nothing will come back to bite me since the BL is likely to get pretty complex. A bit of background: I am working with an Oracle backend so the built-in LINQ to SQL is out; I also need to use production-level libraries so the Oracle EF provider project is out; finally, I am unable to use any GPL or LGPL code (Apache, MS-PL, BSD are okay) so NHibernate/Castle Project are out. I would prefer - if at all possible - to avoid dishing out money but I am more concerned about implementing the right solution. To summarize, there are my requirements: Oracle backend Rapid development (L)GPL-free Free I'm reasonably happy with DataSets but I would benefit from using POCOs as an intermediary between DataSets and views. Who knows, maybe at some point another DAL solution will show up and I will get the time to switch it out (yeah, right). So, while I could use LINQ to convert my DataSets to IQueryable, I would like to have a generic solution so I don't have to write a custom query for each class. I'm tinkering with reflection right now, but in the meantime I have two questions: Are there any problems I overlooked with this solution? Are there any other approaches you would recommend to convert DataSets to POCOs? Thanks in advance.

• Django filters - Using an AllValuesFilter (with a LinkWidget) on a ManyToManyField

  This is my first Stack Overflow question, so please let me know if I do anything wrong. I wish to create an AllValues filter on a ManyToMany field using the wonderful django-filters application. Basically, I want to create a filter that looks like it does in the Admin, so I also want to use the LinkWidget too. • Using LINQ to map dynamically (or construct projections)

So it would walk the "Dest" type and match with the matching "Source" types.. is this possible? Also, to achieve deferred execution, I would want it just to return an IQueryable. For example: public IQueryable<TDest> ProjectionMap<TSource, TDest>(IQueryable<TSource> sourceModel) { // dynamically build the LINQ projection based on the properties in TDest // return the IQueryable containing the constructed projection } I know this is challenging, but I hope not impossible, because it will save me a bunch of explicit mapping work between models and viewmodels.

• C# algorithm for figuring out different possible combinations...

  I have 10 boxes, each box can hold one item from a group/type of items, each 'group' type only fits in one of the 10 box types. The pool can have n number of items. The groups have completely distinct items. Each item has a price, i want an algorithm that will generate all the different possibilities, so i can figure out different price points. so a smaller picture of the problem BOX A - can have item 1,2,3,4 in it BOX B - can have item 6,7,8,9,10,11,12 BOX C - can have item 13,15,16,20,21 The items are stored in a db, they have a column which denotes which box they can go in. All box types are stored in an array, and I can put the items in a generic list. Anyone see a straightforward way to do this. I have tried doing 10 nested foreach's to see if i could find a simpler way. The nested loops will take MANY hours to run. the nested for each's basically pull all combinations, then calculate a rank for each combination, and store the top 10 ranked combination of items for output

• Visual Studio 2008 Installer, Custom Action. Breakpoint not firing.

  Hi, I've got an installer with a custom action project. I want the action to fire at install. The action fires, when I write something to the event log, it works perfectly. But I really need to debug the file since the action is quite complicated.   Hi, I was wondering if anyone could possibly provide me some advice on how i could improve the routing (and/or architecture) to each 'section' of my application. (I'm writing in PHP5, and trying to use strict MVC) Basically, I have a generic index page for the app, and that will spew out boilerplate stuff like jquery and the css etc. and it also generates the main navidation for the entire site, but i'm unsure about the best approach to connect the 'main menu' items(hyperlinks) with their associated controllers. Up until now I have been appending strings into the url and using a 'switch' statement to branch to the correct controller(and view) by extracting the strings back out of '$GET[]' to let it execute the code for the corrosponding action. for instance if i had a basic crud system for customer data, the url to edit a customers details would look like 'www.example.com/index.php?page=customer&action=edit&id=4'. I'm worried that there is a security concern by doing it this way, and i'm not sure of an alternative to branch the main 'index.php' file to the correct controller for each action once the user has clicked the link. Would it be better to use mod_rewrite to disguise the controllers names? or to create a similar system to the ASP MVC framework, where there is a seperate routing system where each url is filtered to get the associated controller? • OSMF seek with Amazon Cloudfront

  I've written a little OSMF player that streams via RTMP from Amazon Cloudfront. There's a known issue, the mp3 duration is not correctly readed from metadata and thus the seek function is not working. I know there's a workaround implying the use of getStreamLength function of NetConnection, which I successfully implemented in a previous non-OSMF player, but now I don't know how and when to call it, in terms of OSMF Events and Traits. • Euler Project Help (Problem 12) - Prime Factors and the like

  I hate to have to ask, but I'm pretty stuck here. I need to test a sequence of numbers to find the first which has over 500 factors: http://projecteuler.net/index.php?section=problems&id=12 -At first I attempted to brute force the answer (finding a number with 480 after a LONG time) -I am now looking at determining the prime factors of a number and then use them to find all other factors. I am currently at the stage where I can get an array of prime factors for any number I input - i.e 300 has the prime factors 2 2 3 5 5 Using this array of prime factors I need to be able to calculate the remaining factors - This is the part I am stuck on. Basically, as I understand it, I need to calculate ALL possible combinations of the numbers in the array... i.e 2 * 2 2 * 2 * 3 2 * 2 * 3 * 5 2 * 3 2 * 3 * 3 ...and so forth - But where it gets interesting is with things like... 2 * 5 2 * 3 * 5 ...i.e Numbers which are not adjacent to each other in the array I can't think of a way to code this in a generic fashion for any length array... I need help!   Jesus, Krishna, Budda! I've migrated to EntLib 5.0, but classes like ISymmetricCryptoProvider are not recognized anymore. Funny to say that Data, Logging and other blocks are working compiling fine. • How do you deserialize a collection with child collections?

  I have a collection of custom entity objects one property of which is an ArrayList of byte arrays. The custom entity is serializable and the collection property is marked with the following attributes: [XmlArray("Images"), XmlArrayItem("Image",typeof(byte[]))] So I serialize a collection of these custom entities and pass them to a web service, as a string. The web service receives the string and byte array in tact, The following code then attempts to deserialize the collection - back into custom entities for processing... XmlSerializer ser = new XmlSerializer(typeof(List<myCustomEntity>)); StringReader reader = new StringReader(xmlStringPassedToWS); List<myCustomEntity> entities = (List<myCustomEntity>)ser.Deserialize(reader); foreach (myCustomEntity e in entities) { // ...do some stuff... foreach (myChildCollection c in entities.ChildCollection { // .. do some more stuff.... } } I've checked the XML resulting from the initial serialization and it does contain byte array - the child collection, as does the StringReader built above. After the deserialization process, the resulting collection of custom entites is fine, except that each object in the collection does not contain any items in its child collection. (i.e. it doesn't get to "...do some more stuff..." above. Can someone please explain what I am doing wrong? Is it possible to serialize ArrayLists within a generic collection of custom entities?

• Help a CRUD programmer think about an "approval workflow"

  I've been working on a web application that is basically a CRUD application (Create, Read, Update, Delete). Recently, I've started working on what I'm calling an "approval workflow". Basically, a request is generated for a material and then sent for approval to a manager. Depending on what is requested, different people need to approve the request or perhaps send it back to the requester for modification. The approvers need to keep track of what to approve what has been approved and the requesters need to see the status of their requests. As a "CRUD" developer, I'm having a hard-time wrapping my head around how to design this. What database tables should I have? How do I keep track of the state of the request? How should I notify users of actions that have happened to their requests? Is their a design pattern that could help me with this? Should I be drawing state-machines in my code? I think this is a generic programing question, but if it makes any difference I'm using Django with MySQL.
