Tricks and Optimizations for you Sitecore website

When working with Sitecore there are some optimizations/configurations I usually repeat in order to make my app production ready. Following is a small list I have compiled from experience, Sitecore documentation, communicating with Sitecore Engineers etc. This is not supposed to be technically complete and might not be fit for all environments. Simple configurations that can make a difference: 1) Configure Sitecore Caches. This is the most straight forward and sure way of increasing the performance of your website. Data and item cache sizes (/databases/database/ [id=web] ) should be configured as needed. You may start with a smaller number and tune them as needed. <cacheSizes hint="setting"> <data>300MB</data> <items>300MB</items> <paths>5MB</paths> <standardValues>5MB</standardValues> </cacheSizes> Tune the html, registry etc cache sizes for your website. <cacheSizes> <sites> <website> <html>300MB</html> <registry>1MB</registry> <viewState>10MB</viewState> <xsl>5MB</xsl> </website> </sites> </cacheSizes> Tune the prefetch cache settings under the App_Config/Prefetch/ folder. WhatsApp & Tasker for Android – Read & Write messages

So, I finally gave up on all my previous the Microsoft Mobile/Phone OS devices and made my switch to Android this year. I am using my Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000 with CyanogenMod 9.1.0 (http://get.cm/get/jenkins/7086/cm-9.1.0-n7000.zip) and ClockworkMod 6.0.1.2 (http://download2.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-6.0.1.2-n7000.zip) since August this year and I am so happy with the performance and the flexibility it offers me. As a software developer by profession, I would expect most of my gadget to be highly customizable and programmable (one time or at intervals) to suit my needs as close as it can. I was introduced to Automation for Android – Tasker (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.dinglisch.android.taskerm&hl=en) via reddit (http://www.reddit.com/r/tasker) and the word ‘automation’ was enough for me to dive right into this app. Only automation that I did earlier was switching profiles depending on location on there phones. And now, just imagine a complete set of possibilities that can be automate on the phone or via the phone. I did my research and found a couple of other tools that do the same/as close as what Tasker can do and few of them are even free. There’s one even by Microsoft called on{X} (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.microsoft.onx.app&hl=en). Microsoft’s on{X} really caught my eye. You can write code for your phone on the web application by them, deploy it on your phone and even trace the flow all using your PC. Really brilliant, I love the fact that it’s all JavaScript. Here comes the but, it is still very very young and it’s policy of accessing my News Feed on Facebook is not something that I can not digest. On{X} is good, but as I said earlier, the API is not very mature and hence, I gave up on it. I bought Tasker, the best 5,00 € I spent in ages and I want to talk about it in this post. I am still a “noob” while operating this tool, but I tried my shot at automating WhatsApp (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.whatsapp&hl=en), a popular messenger for various platform. The requirement for the automation is that, if I send a WhatsApp ‘wru’ message to the phone, it should respond back giving the location and battery level of my phone. It could be useful, if you like to locate your misplaced phone or automatically reply to your partner/friend, honestly, I don’t know what you will use it - through this post, I am just introducing automating WhatsApp using Tasker. Before we begin, the following script only works when your phone is rooted as we will be accessing the WhatsApp database and type some special characters like ‘:’. Oh yea, and if you are having the Talkback auto enabled for Chrome browser, you need to turn Off the Web scripts to run. Tasker is amazing, I have automated a lot of tasks using this tool. Visual Studio 2010 Productivity Tips and Tricks–Part 1: Extensions

I don’t know about you, but when it comes to development, I prefer my environment to be as free of clutter as possible. It may surprise you to know that I have tried ReSharper, and did not like it, for the reason that I stated above. In my opinion, it had too much clutter. Don’t get me wrong, there were a couple of features that I did like about it (inversion of if blocks, code feedback), but for the most part, I actually felt that it was slowing me down. Introduction Another large factor besides intrusiveness/speed in my choice to dislike ReSharper would probably be that I have become comfortable with my current setup and extensions. I believe I have a good collection, and am quite happy with what I can accomplish in a short amount of time. I figured that I would share some of my tips/findings regarding Visual Studio productivity here, and see what you had to say. The first section of things that I would like to cover, are Visual Studio Extensions. In case you have been living under a rock for the past several years, Extensions are available under the Tools menu in Visual Studio: The extension manager enables integrated access to the Microsoft Visual Studio Gallery online with access to a few thousand different extensions. I have tried many extensions, but for reasons of lack reliability, usability, or features, have uninstalled almost all of them. However, I have come across several that I find I can not do without anymore: NuGet Package Manager (Microsoft) Perspectives (Adam Driscoll) Productivity Power Tools (Microsoft) Web Essentials (Mads Kristensen) Extensions NuGet Package Manager To be honest, I debated on whether or not to put this in here. Most people seem to have it, however, there was a time when I didn’t, and was always confused when blogs/posts would say to right click and “Add Package Reference…” which with one of the latest updates is now “Manage NuGet Packages”. So, if you haven’t downloaded the NuGet Package Manager yet, or don’t know what it is, I would highly suggest downloading it now! Features Simply put, the NuGet Package Manager gives you a GUI and command line to access different libraries that have been uploaded to NuGet. Some of its features include: Ability to search NuGet for packages via the GUI, with information in the detail bar on the right. Quick access to see what packages are in a solution, and what packages have updates available, with easy 1-click updating. If you download a package that requires references to work on other NuGet packages, they will be downloaded and referenced automatically. Productivity Tip If you use any type of source control in Visual Studio as well as using NuGet packages, be sure to right-click on the solution and click "Enable NuGet Package Restore". What this does is add a NuGet package to the solution so that it will be checked in along side your solution, as well as automatically grab packages from NuGet on build if needed. This is an extremely simple system to use to manage your package references, instead of having to manually go into TFS and add the Packages folder. Perspectives I can't stand developing with just one monitor. Especially if it comes to debugging. The great thing about Visual Studio 2010, is that all of the panels and windows are floatable, and can dock to other screens. The only bad thing is, I don't use the same toolset with everything that I am doing. By this, I mean that I don't use all of the same windows for debugging a web application, as I do for coding a WPF application. Only thing is, Visual Studio doesn't save the screen positions for all of the undocked windows. So, I got curious one day and decided to check and see if there was an extension to help out. This is where I found Perspectives. Features Perspectives gives you the ability to configure window positions across any or your monitors, and then to save the positions in a profile. Perspectives offers a Panel to manage different presets/favorites, and a toolbar to add to the toolbars at the top of Visual Studio. Ability to 'Favorite' a profile to add it to the perspectives toolbar. Productivity Tip Take the time to setup profiles for each of your scenarios - debugging web/winforms/xaml, coding, maintenance, etc. Try to remember to use the profiles for a few days, and at the end of a week, you may find that your productivity was never better. Productivity Power Tools Ah, the Productivity Power Tools... Quite possibly one of my most used extensions, if not my most used. The tool pack gives you a variety of enhancements ranging from key shortcuts, interface tweaks, and completely new features to Visual Studio 2010. Features I don't want to bore you with all of the features here, so here are my favorite: Quick Find - Unobtrusive search box in upper-right corner of the code window. Great for searching in general, especially in a file. Solution Navigator - The 'Solution Explorer' on steroids. Easy to search for files, see defined members/properties/methods in files, and my favorite feature is the 'set as root' option. Updated 'Add Reference...' Dialog - This is probably my favorite enhancement period... The 'Add Reference...' dialog redone in a manner that resembles the Extension/Package managers. I especially love the ability to search through all of the references. "Ctrl - Click" for Definition - I am still getting used to this as I usually try to use my keyboard for everything, but I love the ability to hold Ctrl and turn property/methods/variables into hyperlinks, that you click on to see their definitions. Great for travelling down a rabbit hole in an application to research problems. While there are other commands/utilities, I find these to be the ones that I lean on the most for the usefulness. Web Essentials If you have do any type of web development in ASP .Net, ASP .Net MVC, even HTML, I highly suggest grabbing the Web Essentials right NOW! This extension alone is great for productivity in web development, and greatly decreases my development time on new features. Features Some of its best features include: CSS Previews - I say 'previews' because of the multiple kinds of previews in CSS that you get font-family, color, background/background-image previews. This is great for just tweaking UI slightly in different ways and seeing how they look in the CSS window at a glance. Live Preview - One word - awesome! This goes well with my multi-monitor setup. I put the site on one monitor in a Live Preview panel, and then as I make changes to CSS/cshtml/aspx/html, the preview window will update with each save/build automatically. For CSS, you can even turn on live-update, so as you are tweaking CSS, the style changes in real time. Great for tweaking colors or font-sizes. Outlining - Small, but I like to be able to collapse regions/declarations that are in the way of new work, or are just distracting. Commenting Shortcuts - I don't know why it wasn't included by default, but it is nice to have the key shortcuts for commenting working in the CSS editor as well. Productivity Tip When working on a site, hit CTRL-ALT-ENTER to launch the Live Preview window. Dock it to another monitor. When you make changes to the document/css, just save and glance at the other monitor. No need to alt tab, then alt tab before continuing editing. Conclusion These extensions are only the most useful and least intrusive - ones that I use every day. The great thing about Visual Studio 2010 is the extensibility options that it gives developers to utilize. Have an extension that you use that isn't intrusive, but isn't listed here? Mediawiki authenication replacement showing "Login Required" instead of signing user into wiki

I'm fairly to MediaWiki and needed a way to automatically log users in after they authenticated to a central server (which creates a session and cookie for applications to use). I wrote a custom authentication extension based off of the LDAP Authentication extension and a few others. The extension simply needs to read some session data to create or update a user and then log them in automatically. All the authentication is handled externally. A user would not be able to even access the wiki website without logging in externally. This extension was placed into production which replaced the old standard MediaWiki authentication system. I also merged user accounts to prepare for the change. By default, a user must be logged in to view, edit, or otherwise do anything in the wiki. My problem is that I found if a user had previously used the built-in MediaWiki authentication system and returned to the wiki, my extension would attempt to auto-login the user, however, they would see a "Login Required" page instead of the page they requested like they were an anonymous user. If the user then refreshed the page, they would be able to navigate, edit, etc. From what I can tell, this issue resolves itself after the UserID cookie is reset or created fresh (but has been known to strangely come up sometimes). To replicate, if there is an older User ID in the "USERID" cookie, the user is shown the "Login Required" page which is a poor user experience. Another way of showing this page is by removing the user account from the database and refreshing the wiki page. As a result, the user will again see the "Login Required" page. Does anyone know how I can use debugging to find out why MediaWiki thinks the user is not signed in when the cookies are set properly and all it takes is a page refresh? SSH session becomes unresponsive when logged into Ubuntu Server virtual machine using VirtualBox

Hi everyone, I'm really at my wits end here, so I'm hoping someone here can help me. I have a virtual machine running Ubuntu Server 9.10. It's just a small development environment so I can keep my code separate from the test and production environments. I am running it through VirtualBox 3.1.6 on a laptop running Ubuntu Desktop 9.10. I have it set up with a bridged network connection and it is bridged to my laptop's wireless adapter. We have no wired connections in this office. I boot up the VM and everything is fine. I can SSH into it using gnome-terminal and for a while everything is Kosher. Then seemingly randomly, the SSH terminal session with hang. No error message, nothing; it just becomes unresponsive. If I go to the VirtualBox terminal I find the VM itself is perfectly fine. It can ping and I can SSH out with it. If I restart the networking on the VM the SSH session in my gnome-terminal will most of the time become responsive again. Here's an interesting point, the SSH session will sometimes die right in the middle of me typing something (this points to it not being an idle session issue) and if I go to the VirtualBox terminal and restart the networking and then return to my gnome-terminal SSH session I find that it will come back to life and what I typed when the session hung originally will magically type itself in to the buffer. So, my input is getting stored somewhere and just can't make its way to the VM until the networking on the VM is restarted. I've tried different versions of VirtualBox and used vmdk images and vdi images and nothing seems to work. I can't tell if the problem is with my laptop, VirtualBox, or the Ubuntu Server VDI. Is there anyway to debug this issue? Or has anyone out there seen anything similar? Your help is much appreciated. Nick

I just received a CuBox (basically a tiny ARM based PC). It comes pre-installed with Ubuntu, and I did not (yet) want to fiddle with the OS itself. My aim is to have it automaticall start a browser in fullscrren upon boot. Using chromium with the "--kiosk" flag works perfectly in that regard. But now I have the problem that the screen turns off after a certain time. I managed to turn off the screen saver using: gconftool-2 -s /apps/gnome-screensaver/idle_activation_enabled --type=bool false And tried to turn off the power management using: gconftool-2 -s /apps/gnome-power-manager/ac_sleep_display --type=int 0 and gconftool-2 -s /apps/gnome-power-manager/timeout/sleep_display_ac --type=int 0 Neither of the power-management commands worked. Theoretically I could hook up a mouse and keyboard and configure it manually. But I want to learn how to do it over the console. The box will eventually be only reachable via SSH. So I'd like to be able to trouble-shoot it later. I don't quite know where to look for. I searched the gconf tree using gconftool-2 -S for anything related to the terms power, idle and sleep but did not find anything promising. Maybe it's not even gconf related... Any ideas what else I could look for?

To enable SQLite on my Windows/Apache/PHP setup, I uncomment the following lines in the php.ini file and restart Apache: extension=php_pdo.dll extension=php_pdo_sqlite.dll Now I have a VPS with Suse Linux 10.3 and Apache/PHP was set automatically. Looking through the php.ini file to make the above changes, I see that things are a little different on Linux: there is no list of extensions to uncomment I found "extension_dir = /usr/lib/php5/extensions" but in this directory find only: pdo.so pdo_mysql.so How can I enable SQLite in this Linux environment?

Can we manage incoming call number landing on asterisk?

I am using Asterisk 1.4.2 in two different machine. I have configured some extensions in asterisk. When any caller, dial my extension number with local number then if I see asterisk console (asterisk -r) then incoming number is starting with 0, but if caller dial same extension number using STD number then in asterisk console (asterisk -r), incoming number is staring with 0091 (here 91 is country code). Could I change this setting or is there any standard for asterisk for local, STD or ISD number?

I'm trying to write a shell script over ssh via a bash prompt. The shell, however, insists on interpreting any variable I want to write instead of writing it directly to file. For example, cat <<EOF >checkup.sh\n'$command'EOF is simply written as '' to file. How do I get $command written instead? I've tried every practical method of escaping I can think of. If it changes anything, I'm doing it over PHP using phpseclib.

Displaying XML in Chrome Browser

I have a service run under daemontools defined like: /service/myservice/run = #!/bin/sh exec setuidgid someuser somecommand Now, if I run this as a script directly from a root shell, somecommand will get a correct ulimit (unlimited). However, when I start the service using svc -u /service/myservice then somecommand does get a ulimit effectively slightly above 11000. How can I have somecommand get the correct ulimit even when started via svc (not from a shell)? This is on FreeBSD 9 release.

I'm want to register a small domain name. I want it to be easy to use from a mobile phone. The '.com' extension is hard to use because you have to press 'o' then 'm'. Does anyone has any suggestions of small domain extension names and where to buy?

php info not effect when edit value in php.ini on nginx webserver

I've already installed php, fcgi, nginx, the system running as no problem, but the problem happen when: I update memory_limit in php.ini, then restart php-cgi, nginx, but when use phpinfo, theo memory_limit is not effected. I install 2 new extensions: curl and memcache, add 2 lines: extension=curl.so and extension=memcache.so, restart php-cgi and nginx, phpinfo also not show up the value curl and memcache in phpinfo. So, how should i do?Please help me.

One of our Lotus Approach files (file extension .apr) has hardcoded paths to additional underlying database files (file extension .dbf). We've moved the Approach database and all the underlying files to a new network drive, so these paths need to be updated. You can see the old paths by opening the File menu and selecting "Approach File Properties", under the "Databases" heading. How can you change these paths?

Accessing a persistent ssh tunnel

How do I pass commands (shell) to a persistent SSH tunnel rather than open a connection for every instance? I have a Python scraper running on a client server which passes URL variables and shell commands to a remote host via a reverse tunnel (forwarded port), so that the URL's are then executed on the host (python fabric ssh localhost:12345 'browser open URL'). I could make the reverse tunnel persistent but how do I echo the url/command to the session? Update - ControlMaster (built into SSH) solves this one.
