• Why does a port occasionally stop listening? This happens only on occasion

  I have a Windows Service written in C# that listens on port 8591. I also have a web application hosted in IIS on the same server that makes request to the service. On occasion the port will stop listening and throws the following error: "No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it 127.0.0.1:8591". This happened 3 times in 2 months and just resolves itself. I can also fix it manually by restarting the service. I'm wondering if any one else has run into this problem and has possible suggestions to resolve. I'm a developer and have worked with our windows group extensively and they assure me there is no firewall or AV blocking the port on occasion. This is running on Windows Server 2008 R2. Very puzzled at what could be causing this to happen. Please let me know if you need more information.

• IIS7 integrated mode closing token between requests

  We are migrating to IIS7 integrated mode and have come across an issue. We authenticate using WindowsAuthentication but then store a reference to the WindowsPrincipal so that on future requests we can authorize as needed against AD. In IIS 7 Integrated mode, the token is being closed (between requests) so that when we try to run IsInRole it generates a disposed exception. Is there a way to cache this token or change our use of WindowsPrincipal so that we don't need to make successive AD requests to get it for each authorization request? Here is the exception being thrown from WindowsPrincipal.IsInRole("") - System.ObjectDisposedException: {"Safe handle has been closed"} Thanks.

• How do I decrease first load time in ASP.net MVC 2?

  I have an ASP.net MVC 2 application that runs well locally. However when I move the files to my production server, I get a first time lag of about 30 seconds, I assume this is a first compile. After that the application works fine. Then after about 20-30 minutes of non use, the applications takes another 30 seconds or so to load. I did try to precompile the code, but there is still a lag during the first load. Are there any trick to getting the application to work faster on the first load? I am using ASP.net 3.5, IIS 6 , visual studio 2010, MVC 2. Thanks

• COMET chat application - IIS7 slows down over time

  I have built a chat application which uses this code to push messages to clients (web pages) and to monitor online users and their information. Basically, the code creates and manages a custom thread pool for maintaining the list of connected users & their state. The application was hosted on a shared hosting account (IIS6), and worked fine. After moving the site (ASP.Net App) to a dedicated virtual server it seems I have a problem where IIS7 gets slower and slower as time passes, and my only "solution" is to restart IIS. I am trying to look at the performance counters and have do idea on which one to look.

• ASP.NET application stopping event?

  I have a ASP.NET application which implements a custom in-memory cache. I'm using this as opposed to ASP.NET's caching mechanism as I needed a more complex way to handle what to drop from the cache. Part of this custom cache is a separate thread which occasionally searches for data to drop from the cache whenever it gets too large. What I need to do is signal this cache maintenance thread to stop whenever the ASP.NET application 'exits'. I guess this basically amounts to when the web site is stopped in IIS. Is there a pre-existing event I can utilise to do this? Thanks.

• Virtual directory problem for cruise control.net

  Hi All, I have downloaded cruisecontrol.net setup and have installed it in "C:\Program Files\CruiseControl.NET". It contains a folder called "webdashboard" which has aspx page and some other stuff as well. I want to configure this in my IIS so that I can access it , I tried but it doesn't work , every time I get error that page you requested is not found. I created web site, created virtual directory but none is working. I have not put anything in inetpub/wwwroot. Can anyone please guide me how can I configure this to work.

• Using Response.Redirect() to a relative path.

  I'm working with ASP.net. My website is hosted within a subfolder test under the IIS root directory. So the url of default.aspx is http://localhost/test/Default.aspx. From default.aspx, I want to use Reponse.Redirect() with a relative path to redirect to another url within the same web site, http://localhost/test/whatever. I tried Response.Redirect("/hello"); and Response.Redirect("~/hello"); Both of them redirect to http://localhost/whatever. Note that the Redirect method use http://localhost instead of http://localhost/test/ as the base url. Any ideas? Thanks.

  Is the Windows 7 Home Premium sufficient for software development? Development would be in Visual Studio 2010. I'm on a budget so would rather purchase 'Home Premium' rather than 'Professional' or 'Ultimate'. The Microsoft site says there is next to nothing functionality wise between them that developers would miss. Can anyone confirm or deny? BTW. Does it come with a version of IIS? • How do I safely Debug.Assert in ASP.NET?

  Asserts can't be caught. This is good because some errors I don't want to be wrapped in try/catch, at least not on the development server. But Asserts seem awefully dangerous. • windows server 2008 r2 - can't get apache to run on port 80

  I have a rackspace cloud server running windows server 2008 r2. I've uninstalled IIS because I want to install Apache. I've installed Apache but it fails everytime i try to run it when i listen to port 80. I've run the command netstat -aon|finderstr "80" and i see the following: C:\Users\Administratornetstat -aon|findstr "80" TCP 0.0.0.0:80 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING 4 TCP 10.180.15.249:139 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING 4 TCP [::]:80 [::]:0 LISTENING 4 UDP 10.180.15.249:137 : 4 UDP 10.180.15.249:138 : 4 So what are these things running on port 80 and why can't i get apache to start? Is there an alternative port for to run apache under that will work just as well as 80?

• WCF Web Services - Multiple Hop impersonation on the same server

  Hi Folks I have 3 web services, all located on the same server. My Client calls Service A, which impersonates the client to call Service B, and all is well. Now, I want to impersonate the caller of service B (which is my username) to call Service C. When I use the same technique as before (AllowedImpersonationLevel = Impersonate, user.Impersonate()), The user doesnt get passed to service C. Instead, Service C sees the user as the user I am running it under in IIS. Is there anything special I need to do to get this working? Is this a delegation issue? (I thought it would not be delegation because they are all on the same server) Thanks SO!

  I've a web server and a separate SQL server. I'm trying to use transaction scope to ensure that SQL queries are completed with my linq queries. I wrap everything with this using (TransactionScope scope = new TransactionScope()) I want to know where I need to install DTC. Do I need to install it on the IIS 7.5 box AND the SQL server? Do I need to unblock some ports? Are there any security risk in doing so? I've setup this up once before but don't remember how. If I can't get access to DTC then is there any other way to ensure a lINQ and sql query is atomic?

  We have setup a .net application developed with .net framework 4.0 using MVC framework and WCF service on a Windows 2003, 32-bit server containing IIS 6 successfully. However, when the same application is set up on a Win 2008 R2, 64-bit server, we get the following error when the application is accessing the WCF service: No component for supporting the service was found Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code. Exception Details: Castle.MicroKernel.ComponentNotFoundException: No component for supporting the service was found We have set the flag for Enable 32-bit apps in "Application Pool" to true on the 64-bit server.

• Where can I find up-to-date information / walkthroughs on VS 2010 deployment?

Having heard Hanselman say this is something you can do within VS 2010 easily I set out too find information on exactly how to do this but can not seem to find anything. Ignoring the fact that most of the blog posts / articles are over a year old, there just seems to be no clear step by step information on how to do this. • Max number of web methods?

  Guys I have a web service in asp.net 2.0 that has 234 methods. It seems that when I add another method the site does not compile in VS2005 until I remove one first. I get a message saying that the new method I just added does not exist in a file that belongs in the Microsoft.Net/.../Temporary Files directory. I have restarted IIS, closed down VS2005, removed all files from this temp directory but to no avail. The only way to get the code to compile is to remove another one so as to keep 234 methods.... I can consistency replicate this behaviour so it cannot be my code. Now I know this seems strange but it is true! One other strange thing is that exactly 100 of the method names begin with the word GetXXXyyyZZZ Has anyone else experienced problems with the maximum number of methods that are allowed in a web service?   Hi All, I'm having trouble with paths in a ASP.NET MVC application that's running behind a proxy. Our IIS Application root path is for example http://server/MyApp/ meaning that all urls using the application root ("~/",Url.Action("MyAction","MyController")) are resolved to "/MyApp" Now we're running behind a proxy server that forwards all requests, but changes the application root to something like this: "/Secury/Proxy/RubbishUrl/MyApp" Because the original url is only available on the client, I thought of creating a cookie with the path prefix, and insert this before each generated URL on the server. Now the question is, what's the best location in code to modify each URL that's resolved/sent to the client (to resources, controller actions, images etc)? Every path in the application is resolved with the MVC methods (Url.Content, Url.Action etc).

• Linux based MS Office thumbnail generation

  I've been taken on board to work on a PHP based web application. One part of the application generates thumbnail images for MS Office documents on demand, and it uses MS Office + the VeryPDF docprint utility to do this. Because of this one requirement, the system is running on Windows Server 2003 + IIS. I would prefer to have the system running on a Linux server, rather than MS, as I have far more experience in administering Linux systems than Windows and we have no other in-house technical staff. Does anyone know a way to handle the document conversion using native Linux software? I would love something PHP native, but am willing to look outside that if necessary. • Force php through the .net engine in iis7

  I have converted a php to asp.net mvc and have it hosted with the Rackspace cloud. All works great apart from some php links are still linked from other sites and within search engines. My question is what do I need to add to my web.config to force php sites to go through the .net engine? These links work as expected as I can catch the 404 and redirect where need be:- http://www.securahome.net/myjunk.info http://www.securahome.net/myjunk.phpp However this one doesn't:- http://www.securahome.net/myjunk.php I have spoken to Rackspace cloud and they say "its not possible as IIS doesn't recognize php files. You can setup mime types to handle them" This however makes no sense and I think they did not understand the problem. Does anyone have a solution?

  I have a usercontrol with asp:textbox controls on it that also performs postbacks. If two users, who are both identified by a different session variable, postback the page within the same second, one user will see the other user's viewstate values in the text boxes. I have validated that this happens by setting a textbox, a session variable, and a cookie to the same value (the same value that identifies the user) and writing to the log when all three don't match. The text box's value is the one that is logged as the other user's value. ASP.net 3.5, IIS 6 Has anyone experienced this issue.

  I am embedding tracking images within emails that are being sent from a custom-built opt-in CRM system. The image src is an encoded .gif, such as src="12_34_675.gif". The image is served by an ASP.NET httphandler that decodes the src encoding and serves a transparent image. Everything works fine, but some email clients request the image multiple times, creating duplicate entries. Some clients make three calls all within one second, and some seem to make tens of calls over a day or so. Mostly email clients make single calls, but these few duplicates are very perplexing. I know I can code around them, but I'd really like to understand what's going on. I've checked the IIS log files, which show that the duplicate requests are coming from the client machines. I can't think what might be causing these duplicate http requests. Help!

• WCF Service error received when using TCP: "The message could not be dispatched..."

  I am new to creating WCF services. I have created a WCF web service in VS2008 that is running on IIS 7. When I use http the service works perfectly. When I configure the service for TCP and run I get the following error message. There was a communication problem. The message could not be dispatched because the service at the endpoint address 'net:tcp://elec:9090/CoordinateIdTool_Tcp/IdToolService.svc is unavailable for the protocol of the address. I have searched a lot of forums, including this one, for a resolution but nothing has worked. Everything appears to be set up correctly on IIS 7. WAS has been set up to run. The default web site has a net.tcp binding and the application has net.tcp under the enabled protocols. I am including what I think is the important part of the web.config from the host project and also the app.config from the client project I am using to test the service. • How to Test Individual Front End Web Server

  My farm consists of two front end (FE) web servers that are managed by a load balancer. One FE went down so we configured the load balancer to only send traffic to the other FE. We rebuilt the failed FE and rejoined the farm which appears to have worked successfully (looking at IIS). I want to test the new FE before configuring the Load Balancer to use the new server. The approach I took was to add the IP/URL to my host file that pointed to the new server but nothing comes up. Any advice would be great. Thanks

  I have an IIS web site. This web site contains other web sites so the structure is like that. \ MainWebSite\ App1\ App2\ All sites are Asp.net MVC Webapplications. In the MasterPage of App1 i reference the Script-files like that <script type="text/javascript" src="../../Scripts/jquery-ui-1.8.custom.min.js"></script> The Problem is that he now tries to find the File at http:\server\MainWebSite\Scripts.... how can i workaround that? should i put all my Scripts and CSS files into the root directory is that a preferred solution?
