• Where do you store the private key for your code signing certificate?

  I recently acquired a code signing certificate for my employer, but I am not the InstallShield developer who will sign the binaries before distribution. I know I can export the certificate along with its private key, but where do I store it so the InstallShield developer can install it on his machine? Should I remove it from my machine once I give it to the person doing the signing? Where do I store the master copy? Obviously, source control is not the best place, unless I lock down that directory in SVN.

• chained msi's/Bootstrapper/prerequisite?

  I have a few component msi packages that need to installed together to form the end application. The problem is: the components that make up the package can be updated and the component relaunched on the http file server.What approach should i take? The installer that i am writing is the 'master' installer. Which needs to be able to read what version of each component is installed on ther client machine in order to perform an upgrade only on that one component. Also if the application is installed for the first time the installer will download and install all required components. I am using Installshield 2009. I have looked into chained MSI's but the master installer is empty. as it needs to be as lightweight as possible. I have no idea how to write a bootstrapper application and my company perfers that i use installshield to write the installer. I have researched - and apparently pre-requisites are not meant to be uninstalled.

  I am upgrading a SAP Java instance and am getting the error shown in the log below. There are not backup profile files in the profiles directory. The string _u does not exist in the default, start or instance profile for instance SCS01. Please can you suggest what the issue might be? • mod_jk problem: Tomcat is probably not started or is listening on the wrong port

  Hi, I am running some application on Tomcat 6.0.26. There is Apache in front of web server talking to it over mod_jk. Every few hours when I try to access application browser simply spins, and no content is retrieved.   We have an external USB 2 drive that we are using as a backup drive for our configuration. We use rsnapshot for the backups.   I have a PPT presentation of about 400 slides that I periodically update and publish as PDF. The view I publish is the Notes Pages. This worked fine for several years, during which time I was using PPT 2002. I recently upgraded to PPT 2010, and now I find that the PDFs I create are about 25 times bigger than they used to be, and the text in the slides part of the Notes Pages is no longer selectable in Acrobat. According to Why does Powerpoint 2010 print notes pages to PDF as raster images? , the problem is that PPT 2010 is rendering the slides' content as images, which is not what earlier versions of PPT did. The solution offered in that discussion involves Office Automation and VBA, neither of which I know anything about, and it's not clear whether that approach solves the problem of the text in the slides not being selectable in the PDF. Isn't there a simple way to get PPT 2010 to print Notes Pages to PDF the way it did in PPT 2002?

With outlook 2007, it was solved by adding Outlvbs.dll in the office directory, and running msiexec /i {<Outlook GUID>} ADDLOCAL=OutlookVBScript /qb But it seems this does not work anymore with Outlook 2010, I get the following error : Error 2711. An internal error has occured. (OutlookVBScript). I don't get much help from microsoft support site, as there isn't a lot of informations on office 2010 yet. Have anyone succeded in installing and using outlook 2010 with form scripting in a citrix environment ?

• VS 2010 JavaScript editor – matching braces highlighting – is it so difficult to implement?

  I do not know. Just curious. But first things first. As a web developer I spend about 80% of my work-time editing JavaScript code. And since my server-side platform is .NET then it would be very convenient to have decent JavaScript text editor within Visual Studio IDE. So, Visual Studio 2010 is out. Downloaded and installed. What were my expectations regarding JavaScript editor? Pretty low, actually.  I just wanted to have matching braces highlighted eventually. That’s all. Yes, I know about Ctrl + ] shortcut but it is not event remotely close to convenience. And the result? Alas. Without further ado, just look at some real-world fragment of code from jQuery Templates Proposal experimental plugin as I see it in Notepad++, Notepad2 and Visual Studio 2010 editors respectively: Notepad++ Notepad2 Visual Studio 2010 Look at the highlighted parentheses, regular expression literals, numbers. Do you have a feeling that the last screenshot is not very informative in comparison with the other ones? If yes, then my question is why? Instead I was given an IntelliSense. Sorry, but I do not need it to rot my mind. Especially the one which does not always work properly (try to use it with base2 library for example). With all the expressive power of the language I have to know what I am doing. Instead I still have the same plain old Notepad with some of the JavaScript keywords colorized, plus partially functional/useful IntelliSense. What I do need, is just a little help to make less errors when I type the code – some essential text editor facilities that I really need. Give me that and only then feel free to improve on something else. Maybe I am wrong. Then, sorry. Just cannot believe that I have to wait for another couple of years to get very basic code editor feature.

• Connect Team Foundation Service/TFS 2012 with Visual Studio 2010 &amp; Visual Studio 2008

  Hello, Microsoft finally released the Team Foundation Service in late October 2012 after its long time in the preview phase. I was already using the TFS Preview which was free but I was happy to see Microsoft releasing the Team Foundation Service also FREE for upto 5 users. Isn't that great news? I know there are bunch of other free source control repositories (Github, Bitbucket, SVN etc.) out there but I somehow like TFS better. Also the other good thing about the final release was that I didn’t had to do any kind of migration of my code from preview to final release version. Just changed the TFS connection URL and it worked like a charm. Anyways, if you are a startup with small team and need some awesome Source Control along with all the good Project Management, Continuous Integration (Build, Test, Deploy), Team Collaboration, Agile/Scrum planning etc. features than Team Foundation Service is your answer. Microsoft has not yet released their pricing for more than 5 users and will be releasing it sometime in early 2013. What if as of now you have a team more than 5 users and you want to use Team Foundation Service, the good news is you can use it for FREE but when they release the final pricing, you will have to transition to the paid plan. Lot of story, getting to the point, connecting to Team Foundation Service with Visual Studio 2012 is straight forward and would work out of the box but it wont for previous versions of Visual Studio. You will have to upgrade to the latest service pack first and than install the forward compatibility pack. (1st : Service Packs & 2nd: Forward Compatibility packs) For Visual Studio 2010: Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1. Visual Studio 2010 forward compatibility for TFS 2012 and Team Foundation Service.         For Visual Studio 2008: Visual Studio 2008 Service Pack 1. Visual Studio 2008 forward compatibility for TFS 2012 & Team Foundation Service. Restart your system. Visual Studio 2008 will not work if you only put https://xxx.visualstudio.com. You will have to put your collection name too as shown below.       By the way, it doesn’t matter if you are an Apple Application Developer or Android App Developer, you can still use Team Foundation Service as your source control.   I'm trying to associate .doc and .docx files to MS Word 2010 using the same .desktop file as Unity dash and launcher, so I can use the Word icon in launcher. I tried: [Desktop Entry] Name=Microsoft Word 2010 Exec=env WINEPREFIX="/home/nastys/.mso2010" wine "C:/Program Files/Microsoft Office/Office14/WINWORD.exe" %f Type=Application StartupNotify=true Comment=Create and edit professional-looking documents such as letters, papers, reports, and booklets by using Microsoft Word. Icon=29F5_WINWORD.0 StartupWMClass=WINWORD.EXE MimeType=application/msword; application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.wordprocessingml.document; Using this .desktop file I can launch Word with its icon in Unity launcher, but if I associate .doc files to the same file Word will launch, but it won't open the .doc file. If I associate .doc files to any .desktop file generated by Wine it will launch Word, but it will use Wine icon.

  I ran into an error message in SharePoint 2010 that took me a few minutes to figure out.  I was working on a demo of SharePoint 2010’s managed metadata and getting an error when I was adding a Managed Metadata column to a library.  A little Google research turned up this blog post: The Taxonomy feature (Feature ID "73EF14B1-13A9-416b-A9B5-ECECA2B0604C") has not been activated. As Michal Pisarek pointed out last June, you get the error because the Taxonomy feature isn’t activated.  Like Michal, I’m not sure how this happened to my installation, but the fix he documented works. (Activating the feature using STSADM)

• How to build Visual Studio Setup projects (.vdproj) with TFS 2010 Build ?

  Out of the box, Team Foundation Server 2010 Build does not support building of setup projects (.vdproj). Although, you can modify DefaultTemplate.xaml or create your own in order to achieve this. I had to try bunch of different blog post's and finally got it working with a mixture of all those posts.   Since you don’t have to go through this pain again, I have uploaded the Template which you can use right away : https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=65B2671F6B93CDE9!310 Download and CheckIn this template into your source control. Modify your Build Definition to use this template. Unless you have CheckedIn the template, it wont show up in the template selection section in the process task of build definition. In your Visual Studio Solution Configuration Manager, make sure you specify to build the setup project also. You might get this warning in your build result: “The project file “*.vdproj” is not support by MSBuild and cannot be build. Hope it helps.
