  • My server cant resolve domains?

    - by Nuker
I am on a VPS that is pretty much unmanaged so it means im on my own. I did my best to configure it so i can host my own site for other people to see it online but seems like i have network problems because in the last days many of my users report they cant enter my site from my domain and seems like Google and Facebook cant either (this never happened before). Its weird because i can enter my site without problems and so many other people as well. But then i tried to make a php include and i get this error: Warning: include(): php_network_getaddresses: getaddrinfo failed: Name or service not known in I was told that seems like my server cant resolve domains. The includes work if i use IPs instead of domains. So it means i have a DNS problem or something? What can i do to fix it? Im on a Linux 2.6.32-431.11.2.el6.x86_64 on x86_64 CentOS Linux 6.5 Thank you. EDIT: i have this on my resolv.conf # Generated by NetworkManager # No nameservers found; try putting DNS servers into your # ifcfg files in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts like so: # # DNS1=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx # DNS2=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx # DOMAIN=lab.foo.com bar.foo.com nameserver 8.8.8.8 nameserver 8.8.4.4

  • Cloned Centos 6.4 websrver for test purpose. Virtual host, .htaccess, redirecting url issue

    - by Shogoot
I see similar questions, but not my exact challenge. What I have done so far I cloned a prod server over to a vmware to use it as a test server for new functionality I'm going to write. I'm not a sysadmin by trade, but I'm new to this company and I have to do some thing that are outside of my comfort zone (thats a good thing :) ) The prod server has 2 sites on it s1.com and s2.com. In /html/s1/, /html/s2/ there's an .htaccess file under each s*/. Looking like this: RewriteEngine ON RewriteBase / RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} id=([0-9]+) RewriteRule ^.* %1.htm RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} page=modules/checkout RewriteRule ^.* order.php RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} page=pages/sidekart RewriteRule ^.* pages/sidekart.htm The issue is that s1 has a lot of pages that really belongs under a third domain s3, the rule in line 4 and 5 redirects them to /html/s1/. An example of such URL is: s3.com/?page=modules/product&id=521614 I'm trying then to get those URLs (without modifying the URL) to redirect to s3's /html/s3/ server structure, which I set up making a new virtualhost s3 in test servers httpd.conf with a test3.com as servername and changing the other sites to tests1.com and tests2.com, and adding .htaccess also to this s3 root directory, and making a html/s3/ directory structure I populated with an index.html, etc. But, when I take the same URL (s3.com/?page=modules/product&id=521614) changing it to tests3.com/?page=modules/product&id=521614, I get s1's index page showing up in my browser. I've poked around about a day now and i cant figure out why this happens.

I have no idea what could be causing this problem. If there is any other information I need to provide, let me know. I'm using CentOS.

  • Virtual folder for multiple sites

    - by Cups
I am creating a very simple flat file CMS for small (multilingual) websites. The little file writing that goes on is handled by 4 scripts in a publicly available folder in each site named /edit. Given that I have 2 websites now working on that simple system: websiteA/index.php (etc) websiteA/edit/ websiteB/index.php (etc) websiteB/edit/ What is the best way of making that /edit folder "virtual" in order that these and each subsequent website owner can login to their view of /edit and yet the code only exists in one place. I do not want the website owners to have to login from a central website, but from their own /edit directory. I have already read about different solutions seemingly using the <Directory> directive in my httpd.conf declaration for each website, and also using straight mod_rewrite but admit to now becoming confused about some of the terminology. Each website has its own config file which contains path settings and so on. What in your opinion is the best way to handle this? EDIT In light of a reply, I suppose that given a virtual host directive such as this: <VirtualHost 00.00.00.00:80> DocumentRoot /var/www/html/websitea.com ServerName www.websitea.com ServerAlias websitea.com DirectoryIndex index.htm index.php CustomLog logs/websitea combined </VirtualHost> Is it possible to create an alias inside that directive for the folder websitea.com/edit ?

  • Apache downloads php files instead of running their source

    - by Devils Child
I have just recently upgraded PHP 5.3 to 5.4 on my Debian Squeeze server. Now, instead of executing PHP files, Apache just downloads them, which is really bad. When I try to follow these steps, I get "broken packages" upon installing the libapache2-mod-php5 package. Also the answer tells me to add something to my httpd.conf, but it's empty. Question: How can I make apache execute php files again, instead of just passing them through as download? dpkg -l | grep php returns this rc libapache2-mod-php5 5.3.3-7+squeeze15 server-side, HTML-embedded scripting language (Apache 2 module) rc php5-cli 5.3.3-7+squeeze15 command-line interpreter for the php5 scripting language ii php5-common 5.4.15-1~dotdeb.2 Common files for packages built from the php5 source rc php5-gd 5.3.3-7+squeeze15 GD module for php5 rc php5-mcrypt 5.3.3-7+squeeze15 MCrypt module for php5 rc php5-mysql 5.3.3-7+squeeze15 MySQL module for php5 rc php5-suhosin 0.9.32.1-1 advanced protection module for php5 rc phpmyadmin 4:3.3.7-7 MySQL web administration tool And apt-get install libapache2-mod-php5 produces this error The following packages have unmet dependencies: libapache2-mod-php5 : Depends: libdb5.1 but it is not installable Depends: libssl1.0.0 (>= 1.0.0) but it is not installable Depends: libxml2 (>= 2.8.0) but 2.7.8.dfsg-2+squeeze7 is to be installed Recommends: php5-cli but it is not going to be installed E: Broken packages

  • How do I get Tomcat 7 to start up faster in Linux CentOS kernel version 2.6.18?

    - by user1786833
I am experiencing a problem with slow start up times for Tomcat 7. I have done some testing by tweaking configuration parameters both on Linux CentOS kernel version 2.6.18 and on Windows 7 using this link as my primary guide: http://wiki.apache.org/tomcat/HowTo/FasterStartUp and managed only a modest improvement. The improvements seemed to result when I added metadata-complete="true" attribute to the element of my WEB-INF/web.xml file and when I added the names of almost all the jars we use for our application to the tomcat.util.scan.DefaultJarScanner.jarsToSkip property in conf/catalina.properties file. I've also used this JAVA_OPTS in the setenv.sh file: JAVA_OPTS="$JAVA_OPTS -server -Xms1536m -Xmx1536m -XX:MaxPermSize=256m -XX:NewRatio=2 -XX:+UseParallelGC -XX:ParallelGCThreads=2 -Dsun.rmi.dgc.client.gcInterval=1800000 -Dsun.rmi.dgc.server.gcInterval=1800000 -Dorg.apache.jasper.runtime.BodyContentImpl.LIMIT_BUFFER=true " but actually saw my start up times increase slightly. Our QA and production environments are on Linux CentOS so I'm hoping to get more information on improving Tomcat 7 start up times in that environment. My primary role is java developer and I don't have much system administration experience so I appreciate any input. Thank you for your time and suggestions.

  • Make call with alternate provider if NOANSWER

    - by adaptive
I have two voip providers, one free an the other paid. The free provider only allows local calls to certain area codes, so I need to fall back to the the paid provider if a call fails. At the moment, I have the following context in my extensions.conf file: [globals] ; freephoneline.ca PRIMARY_PROVIDER=fpl ; voip.ms SECONDARY_PROVIDER=voipms [local] exten => _NXXNXXXXXX,1,Set(CALLERID(name)=${OUTGOING_NAME}) exten => _NXXNXXXXXX,n,Dial(SIP/${EXTEN}@${PRIMARY_PROVIDER}) exten => _NXXNXXXXXX,n,Set(CALLERID(num)=${OUTGOING_NUMBER}) exten => _NXXNXXXXXX,n,Dial(SIP/1${EXTEN}@${SECONDARY_PROVIDER}) exten => _NXXNXXXXXX,n,Hangup() I checked the logs and noticed that the free provider responds with NOANSWER if a call is not allowed (Even though it plays a message). What I want is to: Try calling the ${PRIMARY_PROVIDER} first. If NOANSWER is returned by provider (not that the callee did not answer), then call with ${SECONDARY_PROVIDER} How can I modify my dial plan to get the desired results? EDIT : The primary provider is freephoneline.ca, and I'm using asterisk v1.8.2.3-2

  • Automatically reconnect to VPN when it drops

    - by IAmAI
I use OpenVPN to connect to a VPN service. I will often use it unattended and on occasion I have come back to find the service disconnected and GUI asking for login credentials. If the connection is disconnected by the service, and not me, I'd like it to attempt to reconnect automatically with no intervention from me, and ideally, if the reconnection attempt initially fails, keep attempting to do so at regular intervals until a connection is successfully. Is there anyway to configure OpenVPN to do this? If not, can someone suggest a way of doing it with scripting (I use Windows)? Failing that, can anyone suggest a VPN solution that does this? The VPN provider supports PPTP as well as OpenVPN. I have configured OpenVPN to read login credentials from a file. Below is my config script. I have censored any details specific to the VPN provider. client dev tun proto tcp remote ???.???.??? 0000 resolv-retry infinite nobind persist-key persist-tun ca ???.???.??? verb 3 mute-replay-warnings float reneg-sec 0 auth-user-pass auth.conf auth-nocache Thanks for your help.

  • htaccess rewriting all subdomains to subdirectories

    - by indorock
I'm trying to build a catch-all for any subdomains (not captured by previous rewrite rules) for a certain domain, and serve a website from a subdirectory that resides in the same folder as the .htaccess file. I already have my vhosts.conf to send all unmapped requests to a "playground" folder, where I want to easily create new subdomains by simply adding a subfolder. So, my structure looks like this: /var/www/playground |-> /foo |-> /bar The .htacces living inside the /playground folder and /foo and /bar being seperate websites. I want http://foo.domain.com to point to /foo and http://bar.domain.com to /bar. Here is my .htaccess file: RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^([^.]+).domain.com$ [NC] RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/%1/(.*) RewriteRule ^(.*) /%1/$1 [L] This is supposed to capture the subdomain, add it as a subfolder in RewriteRule, then append after the slash and path information. The second RewriteCond is there to prevent an infinite loop. My idea was that %1 in the second RewriteCond would be able to capture the capture group in the first RewriteCond. But so far I haven't had any success, it's always ending up in a redirect loop. If I would replace %1 in the second RewriteCond with hardcoded 'foo' or 'bar', it works, which leads me to believe that you cannot refer to a capture group inside a RewriteCond. Is is true? Or am I missing something?

  • Python 2.7 and Ubuntu 10.10: X11 fails

    - by c.a.p.
Against every recommendation I have apt-get remove python in Ubuntu 10.10 (build 2.6.24-29-server x86_64) and apt-get install python2.7 Some built-in software with python2.6 dependencies (like firefox, other minor stuff) was fixed just by apt-get reinstalling or reinstalling from source and the system was stable for one day until I rebooted. Upon booting I got the message "ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode" I have an NVIDIA Quadro NVS 295 256 running on a HP Z600 Workstation so I sudoed: apt-get --purged nvidia* apt-get --purged xserver apt-get install linux-headers-generic apt-get install nvidia-* apt-get install xserver-xorg dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg nvidia-xconfig upon rebooting i get the same "ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode" if I decide to tell the boot menu to restart X, the Ubuntu 10.10 "load screen" shows up and does not do anything for hours. If I "X" the screen remains black for hours; ctrl-c shows that /etc/X11/xorg.conf did not produce any errors just a warning "Type "ONE_LEVEL"...". /var/log/Xorg.0.log issues the following warnings (no errors) (WW) AllowEmptyInput is on (WW) NVIDIA(0): UBB is incompatible If I "startX" I get /usr/bin/python: can't find '__main__.py"' in '/usr/share/command-not-found' Before re-installing xserver-xorg however "startX" ran, just by changing the resolution of the tty1 console. Any hints?

  • "Permission denied" & 500 Internal Server error serving PHP in Mac OS X

    - by Abhic
I just set up Web Sharing in Mac OS X 10.6.2 Snow Leopard. My httpd.conf allows for ExecCGI and all the folders and files are readable by everybody and even writable by me. I put a simple Hello World in index.php in my base site and yet my apache error log shows this: [Thu Mar 18 00:17:18 2010] [error] [client 192.168.11.135] (13)Permission denied: exec of '/Users/abhic/Sites/index.php' failed [Thu Mar 18 00:17:18 2010] [error] [client 192.168.11.135] Premature end of script headers: index.php <html> <head> <title> Hello </title> </head> <body> <?php echo "Hello"; ?> </body> </html> is what my index.php looks like placed in /Users/abhic/Sites My browser shows a 500 Internal Server Error Any help would do me good in the middle of the night. I have been trying to solve this for way too long. Thank you.

  • allow public access to subfolder of protected folder on apache

    - by UnnamedMook
I have password-protected the root folder of my website while i do maintenance, but I want to display a custom 401 error page to let people know the site is under construction. Unfortunately, my web host doesn't allow me write access to anything outside the root folder of my website, so this custom error page must by stored in the root folder or one of its subfolders. Instead of my custom error page I get the Apache default error page and it also says "Additionally, a 401 Authorization Required error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request." I searched for ways to make a subfolder of a protected directory public, and all I could find was to use the "Satisfy any" directive, but this doesn't work for me. It doesn't work on a file-only basis either, as with the .htaccess file below. #Authorization Restriction AuthType Basic AuthName "Access to root" AuthUserFile ********************************* Require user *********** Order Allow,Deny Satisfy any #Error Documents ErrorDocument 401 Error-401.html #Allow access to error documents <Files Error-*,html> Order Deny,Allow Allow from all Satisfy any </Files> I can only use .htaccess files; I don't have access to httpd.conf

  • Can't get PHP to work with my Nginx virtual host. Keeps returning "No input file specified"

    - by steve
    I'm trying to get phpmyadmin up and running on my server. Here's the nginx vhost for it: server { listen 80; server_name server.mydomain.net; location /phpmyadmin/ { fastcgi_pass 127.0.0.1:9000; fastcgi_index index.php; fastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAME /usr/share/phpmyadmin$fastcgi_script_name; include /opt/nginx/conf/fastcgi_params; alias /usr/share/phpmyadmin/; } root /opt/nginx/html/; } Here's my fastcgi_params file fastcgi_param GATEWAY_INTERFACE CGI/1.1; fastcgi_param SERVER_SOFTWARE nginx; fastcgi_param QUERY_STRING $query_string; fastcgi_param REQUEST_METHOD $request_method; fastcgi_param CONTENT_TYPE $content_type; fastcgi_param CONTENT_LENGTH $content_length; fastcgi_param REQUEST_URI $request_uri; fastcgi_param DOCUMENT_URI $document_uri; fastcgi_param DOCUMENT_ROOT $document_root; fastcgi_param SERVER_PROTOCOL $server_protocol; fastcgi_param REMOTE_ADDR $remote_addr; fastcgi_param REMOTE_PORT $remote_port; fastcgi_param SERVER_ADDR $server_addr; fastcgi_param SERVER_PORT $server_port; fastcgi_param SERVER_NAME $server_name; I compiled lighthttpd so I could pull out spawn-fcgi. That is now sitting in /usr/local/bin and is accompanied by my php5-cgi launcher which looks like: #!/bin/sh /usr/local/bin/spawn-fcgi -a 127.0.0.1 -p 9000 -u www-data -C 2 -f /usr/bin/php5-cgi I run this and can see that it's successfully launched by doing a ps aux | grep php. However, whenever I try to open phpmyadmin, I get the error "No input file specified" What am I doing wrong? :/

  • SSL and regular VHost on the same server [duplicate]

    - by Pascal Boutin
This question already has an answer here: How to stop HTTPS requests for non-ssl-enabled virtual hosts from going to the first ssl-enabled virtualhost (Apache-SNI) 1 answer I have a server running Apache 2.4 on which run several virtual hosts. The problem I noticed is that if I try to access let's say https://example.com that have no SSL setuped, apache will automatically try to access the first VHost that has SSL activated (which is litteraly not the same site). How can we prevent this strange behaviour, or in other words, how to say to Apache to ignore SSL for a given site. Here's sample of what my .conf files look like : <VirtualHost foobar.com:80> DocumentRoot /somepath/foobar.com <Directory /somepath/foobar.com> Options -Indexes Require all granted DirectoryIndex index.php AllowOverride All </Directory> ServerName foobar.com ServerAlias www.foobar.com </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost test.example.com:443> DocumentRoot /somepath/ <Directory /somepath/> Options -Indexes Require all granted AllowOverride All </Directory> ServerName test.example.com SSLEngine on SSLCertificateFile [...] SSLCertificateKeyFile [...] SSLCertificateChainFile [...] </VirtualHost> With this, if I try to access https://foobar.com chrome will show me a SSL error that mention that the server was identifying itself as test.example.org Thanks in advance !

  • .htaccess redirect working on localhost but not on server

    - by Thread7
I want users who hit my web site's root directory to be sent to a subdirectory. So anyone going to: http://MyDomain.com or /index.php would be sent to http://MyDomain.com/subdir I used the .htaccess file to successfully do this on my local machine (with Apache 2). But it doesn't work on the server? Users still see the default index.php in the root directory. Here is my simple .htaccess file. Any ideas? • Apache mod_disk_cache on a seperate drive

    - by pavs
how can I set Apache mod_disk_cache on a separate drive from where the OS/Apache is installed? I have set up this on my apache2.conf: <IfModule mod_cache_disk.c> # cache cleaning is done by htcacheclean, which can be configured in # /etc/default/apache2 # # For further information, see the comments in that file, # /usr/share/doc/apache2/README.Debian, and the htcacheclean(8) # man page. # This path must be the same as the one in /etc/default/apache2 CacheRoot /media/cacheHD # This will also cache local documents. It usually makes more sense to # put this into the configuration for just one virtual host. CacheEnable disk / # The result of CacheDirLevels * CacheDirLength must not be higher than # 20. Moreover, pay attention on file system limits. Some file systems # do not support more than a certain number of inodes and # subdirectories (e.g. 32000 for ext3) CacheDirLevels 2 CacheDirLength 1 </IfModule> and it doesn't seem to be caching anything at all. The drive itself is a freshly installed ssd drive formatted with ext4.

  • Make eix available version match emerge

    - by Ryaner
We have out Gentoo hosts using a binhost with EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS="--getbinpkgonly --usepkgonly" in the make.conf file so that the host only pulled down the binary hosts. All works well from that side. I use eix to check on software versions for upgrades but have hit a problem where eix will see an available version ahead of what is available on the binserver. Using glibc as an example ietpl [VE] / # emerge -s glibc Searching... [ Results for search key : glibc ] [ Applications found : 1 ] * sys-libs/glibc Latest version available: 2.14.1-r3 Latest version installed: 2.14.1-r3 Homepage: Description: GNU libc6 (also called glibc2) C library License: LGPL-2 Then eix reports a higher version available ietpl [VE] / # export LASTVERSION='{last}<version>{}' ietpl [VE] / # /usr/bin/eix --nocolor --format '<category> <name> [<installedversions:LASTVERSION>] [<bestversion:LASTVERSION>] \n' --exact --category-name sys-libs/glibc sys-libs glibc [2.14.1-r3] [2.15-r2] What I'm after is for eix to report the latest version available as 2.14.1-r3 like emerge. I've a feeling this is possible since without any formatting, eix returns Available versions: (2.2) ~2.9_p20081201-r3!s 2.10.1-r1!s 2.11.3!s ~2.12.1-r3!s 2.12.2!s{tbz2} ~2.13-r2!s 2.13-r4!s ~2.14!s ~2.14.1-r2!s 2.14.1-r3!s{tbz2} ~2.15-r1!s 2.15-r2!s ~2.15-r3!s **2.16.0!s **9999!s correctly tagging the latest unmasked binary package with {tbz2} I would have thought that the binary flag would do it, but that returns no matches --binary Match packages with *.tbz2 files.

  • Domain name is bringing up wrong site

    - by daniel0mullins
I have a VPS that hosts several domains. I have set up Apache in the following manner: First VirtualHost /etc/apache2/sites-available/somedomain.com <VirtualHost somedomain.com:80> ServerName somedomain.com ServerAlias www.somedomain.com ... </VirtualHost> Second VirtualHost /etc/apache2/sites-available/someotherdomain.com <VirtualHost someotherdomain.com:80> ServerName someotherdomain.com ServerAlias www.someotherdomain.com ... </VirtualHost> Then I symlink the config files from sites-available to sites-enabled and all is well. I had a need to 'turn off' someotherdomain.com, so I removed the symlink to /etc/apache2/sites-available/someotherdomain.com from sites-enabled and the site no longer shows up... BUT typing someotherdomain.com into a web browser brings up somedomain.com!!! I need it to not resolve at all. Does somethiing need to be done in the VirtualHost to just automatically return a 500 or something along those lines. I really don't want people to reach one website from a different domain. Thanks! EDIT ports.conf looks like this NameVirtualHost *:80 Listen 80 <IfModule mod_ssl.c> NameVirtualHost *:443 Listen 443 </IfModule> <IfModule mod_gnutls.c> Listen 443 </IfModule>

Thanks all.

  • Weird vps server issue

    - by anon-user0
I have an unmanaged linux vps Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot). I have LNMP installed. Also php-fpm php-apc, varnish, memcache. I have (or rather had) several live sites on it. under normal load the server uses ~700 mb memory. But since last night its using only 20mb~ memory and a lot of the services seems to be down (according to htop) I only see nginx working and mysql starts up and goes does every few minutes on a loop. Here are some information on the server that might help you help me: root@server:~# uname -a Linux server 2.6.18-308.el5.028stab099.3 #1 SMP Wed Mar 7 15:56:00 MSK 2012 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux - root@server:~# ifconfig -a lo Link encap:Local Loopback LOOPBACK MTU:16436 Metric:1 RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:0 (0.0 B) venet0 Link encap:UNSPEC HWaddr 00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00 inet addr:127.0.0.2 P-t-P:127.0.0.2 Bcast:0.0.0.0 Mask:255.255.255.255 UP BROADCAST POINTOPOINT RUNNING NOARP MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:12515 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:9541 errors:0 dropped:1 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:7191214 (7.1 MB) TX bytes:536726 (536.7 KB) venet0:0 Link encap:UNSPEC HWaddr 00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00 inet addr:176.31.158.78 P-t-P:176.31.158.78 Bcast:0.0.0.0 Mask:255.255.255.255 UP BROADCAST POINTOPOINT RUNNING NOARP MTU:1500 Metric:1 - root@server:~# netstat -l Active Internet connections (only servers) Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State tcp 0 0 *:http-alt *:* LISTEN tcp 0 0 *:ssh *:* LISTEN tcp6 0 0 [::]:http-alt [::]:* LISTEN tcp6 0 0 [::]:ssh [::]:* LISTEN Active UNIX domain sockets (only servers) Proto RefCnt Flags Type State I-Node Path unix 2 [ ACC ] STREAM LISTENING 9307368 @/com/ubuntu/upstart - htop: http://i.stack.imgur.com/NHKYX.png EDIT: Stressed. mind was not working adding log: root@server:~# less /var/log/syslog Jun 27 05:27:42 server syslogd 1.5.0#6ubuntu1: restart. • No HDMI Audio with GeForce 9600GT and nForce board

    - by Bobby
I've been trying to get HDMI with sound working for the last few days, and I'm a little bit out of ideas. (I've verified that the hardware/Setup works via Windows.) aplay does not list my HDMI device: $ aplay -l **** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices **** card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 0: ALC662 rev1 Analog [ALC662 rev1 Analog] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 1: ALC662 rev1 Digital [ALC662 rev1 Digital] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 I've already compiled the alsa drivers (1.0.24) from a snapshot (with --with-oss=no) and added the line options snd-hda-intel model=auto # Tried 3stack-dig and 6stack-dig too to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf. Still, the device does not show up. If it is important, the HDMI TV is at the moment not configured to be part of the X session (I've tried that to, at least with X restart, and it didn't change anything). • How to Configure Windows Machine to Allow File Sharing with DNS Alias

    - by Michael Ferrante
I have not seen a single article posted anywhere online that brings together all the settings one would need to do to make this work properly on Windows, so I thought I would post it here. To facilitate failover schemes, a common technique is to use DNS CNAME records (DNS Aliases) for different machine roles. Then instead of changing the Windows computername of the actual machine name, one can switch a DNS record to point to a new host. This can work on Microsoft Windows machines, but to make it work with file sharing the following configuration steps need to be taken. Outline The Problem The Solution Allowing other machines to use filesharing via the DNS Alias (DisableStrictNameChecking) Allowing server machine to use filesharing with itself via the DNS Alias (BackConnectionHostNames) Providing browse capabilities for multiple NetBIOS names (OptionalNames) Register the Kerberos service principal names (SPNs) for other Windows functions like Printing (setspn) References 1. The Problem On Windows machines, file sharing can work via the computer name, with or without full qualification, or by the IP Address. By default, however, filesharing will not work with arbitrary DNS aliases. To enable filesharing and other Windows services to work with DNS aliases, you must make registry changes as detailed below and reboot the machine. 2. The Solution Allowing other machines to use filesharing via the DNS Alias (DisableStrictNameChecking) This change alone will allow other machines on the network to connect to the machine using any arbitrary hostname. (However this change will not allow a machine to connect to itself via a hostname, see BackConnectionHostNames below). Edit the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters and add a value DisableStrictNameChecking of type DWORD set to 1. Allowing server machine to use filesharing with itself via the DNS Alias (BackConnectionHostNames) This change is necessary for a DNS alias to work with filesharing from a machine to find itself. This creates the Local Security Authority host names that can be referenced in an NTLM authentication request. To do this, follow these steps for all the nodes on the client computer: To the registry subkey HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\MSV1_0, add new Multi-String Value BackConnectionHostNames In the Value data box, type the CNAME or the DNS alias, that is used for the local shares on the computer, and then click OK. Note: Type each host name on a separate line. Providing browse capabilities for multiple NetBIOS names (OptionalNames) Allows ability to see the network alias in the network browse list. Edit the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters and add a value OptionalNames of type Multi-String Add in a newline delimited list of names that should be registered under the NetBIOS browse entries Names should match NetBIOS conventions (i.e. not FQDN, just hostname) Register the Kerberos service principal names (SPNs) for other Windows functions like Printing (setspn) NOTE: Should not need to do this for basic functions to work, documented here for completeness. We had one situation in which the DNS alias was not working because there was an old SPN record interfering, so if other steps aren't working check if there are any stray SPN records. You must register the Kerberos service principal names (SPNs), the host name, and the fully-qualified domain name (FQDN) for all the new DNS alias (CNAME) records. If you do not do this, a Kerberos ticket request for a DNS alias (CNAME) record may fail and return the error code KDC_ERR_S_SPRINCIPAL_UNKNOWN. To view the Kerberos SPNs for the new DNS alias records, use the Setspn command-line tool (setspn.exe). The Setspn tool is included in Windows Server 2003 Support Tools. You can install Windows Server 2003 Support Tools from the Support\Tools folder of the Windows Server 2003 startup disk. How to use the tool to list all records for a computername: setspn -L computername To register the SPN for the DNS alias (CNAME) records, use the Setspn tool with the following syntax: setspn -A host/your_ALIAS_name computername setspn -A host/your_ALIAS_name.company.com computername 3. • Getting USB Wifi device to work

    - by Lolwhites
I have been trying to get an Olitec Wifi N USB dongle to work. At first it lit up but wouldn't connect. A little Googling suggested that it would need ndiswrapper to make it work. After installing and trying to add driver with ndisgtk, I got the error message FATAL: Module ndiswrapper not found., but the driver appears in the list of currently installed ones anyway. However, the situation appears even worse: The USB device doesn't even light up (which it does when plugged into my netbook), suggesting the thing isn't detected any more. How to I go about resolving this issue? I've tried uninstalling ndiswrapper but there seems to have been some permanent change as the device is still not lighting up, as it did at first. I'm basically a Web Developer(PHP Developer) by profession. I mainly work on PHP, jQuery, AJAX, Smarty, HTML and CSS, Bootstrap front-end web development framework. I've also installed and using IDEs/editors like Sublime Text, NetBeans. I'm also using Git repository for my website development as a versioning tool. I'm using "Ubuntu 12.04 LTS" on my machine almost since last two years. My machine configuraion is as follows: Memory : 3.7 GiB Processor : Intel® Core™ i3 CPU M 370 @ 2.40GHz × 4 Graphics : Unknown OS type : 64-bit Disk : 64-bit The important softwares present on my machine and which I'm using daily for my work are as follows: PHP : PHP 5.3.10-1ubuntu3.13 with Suhosin-Patch (cli) (built: Jul 7 2014 18:54:55) Copyright (c) 1997-2012 The PHP Group Zend Engine v2.3.0, Copyright (c) 1998-2012 Zend Technologies Apache web server : /usr/sbin/apachectl: 87: ulimit: error setting limit (Operation not permitted) Server version: Apache/2.2.22 (Ubuntu) Server built: Jul 22 2014 14:35:25 Server's Module Magic Number: 20051115:30 Server loaded: APR 1.4.6, APR-Util 1.3.12 Compiled using: APR 1.4.6, APR-Util 1.3.12 Architecture: 64-bit Server MPM: Prefork threaded: no forked: yes (variable process count) Server compiled with.... -D APACHE_MPM_DIR="server/mpm/prefork" -D APR_HAS_SENDFILE -D APR_HAS_MMAP -D APR_HAVE_IPV6 (IPv4-mapped addresses enabled) -D APR_USE_SYSVSEM_SERIALIZE -D APR_USE_PTHREAD_SERIALIZE -D SINGLE_LISTEN_UNSERIALIZED_ACCEPT -D APR_HAS_OTHER_CHILD -D AP_HAVE_RELIABLE_PIPED_LOGS -D DYNAMIC_MODULE_LIMIT=128 -D HTTPD_ROOT="/etc/apache2" -D SUEXEC_BIN="/usr/lib/apache2/suexec" -D DEFAULT_PIDLOG="/var/run/apache2.pid" -D DEFAULT_SCOREBOARD="logs/apache_runtime_status" -D DEFAULT_LOCKFILE="/var/run/apache2/accept.lock" -D DEFAULT_ERRORLOG="logs/error_log" -D AP_TYPES_CONFIG_FILE="mime.types" -D SERVER_CONFIG_FILE="apache2.conf" MySQL : 5.5.38-0ubuntu0.12.04.1 Smarty : 2.6.18 **NetBeans :** NetBeans IDE 8.0 (Build 201403101706) Sublime Text 2 : Version 2.0.2, Build 2221 Yesterday suddenly a pop-up message appeared on my screen asking me to upgrade to "Ubuntu 14.04 'Trusty Tahr'". I'd also be very happy to upgrade my system to "Ubuntu 14.04 'Trusty Tahr'". Following are the issues about which I'm little bit scared about and I need you all talented people's expert advice/help/suggestions on it: Will upgrading to "Ubuntu 14.04 'Trusty Tahr'" affect the softwares I mentioned above? I mean will I need to re-install/un-install and install these softwares too? Do I really need to and is it really a worth to upgrade to "Ubuntu 14.04 'Trusty Tahr'" from "Ubuntu 12.04 LTS" now? If I upgrade to "Ubuntu 14.04 'Trusty Tahr'" what advantage I'll get from web developer's point of view? Will the upgrade be hassle free and will I be ablr to continue my on-going work without any difficulties? Is "Ubuntu 14.04 'Trusty Tahr'" a LTS version and if yes till when it's going to provide support? These are the five crucial queries I have. If you want any further explanation from me please feel free to ask me. Thanks for spending some of your vaulable time in reading and understanding my issue. Any kind of help/comment/suggestion/answer would be highly appreciated. Though if someone gives canonical, precise and up to the mark answer, it will be of great help to me as well as other web developers using Ubuntu around the world. Once again thank you so much you great people around the globe. Waiting for your precious replies.

  • Scid Chess Program Compiling issue

    - by lbochitt
First of all I would like to point that I'm new to Ubuntu so sorry if what I am asking is ridiculous. I have downloaded Scid 4.4 chess program and I have tried to compile it as it was explained on its website: 1) Initialize git. 2) Create a folder where you want to download and (?) compile the source, then cast: git init on your command line. 3) You're now ready to download the sources recall Fulvio's spell: git clone git://scid.git.sourceforge.net/gitroot/scid/scid This should get you the latest Scid source. 4) You're now ready to compile Scid. In principle, all you need to do is: ./configure and then make 5) If you get stuck, you probably need to get developer versions of tcl/tk. This translates into issuing these three commands: sudo apt-get install tcl8.5-dev sudo apt-get install tk8.5-dev sudo apt-get install zlib1g -dev 6) You should now be ready to compile The problem is that when I run ./configure to start compiling the following message appears on Terminal: configure: Makefile configuration program for Scid Tcl/Tk version: 8.5 Your operating system is: Linux 3.8.0-19-generic Location of "tcl.h": /usr/include/tcl8.5 Location of "tk.h": /usr/include/tcl8.5 Location of Tcl 8.5 library: not found Location of Tk 8.5 library: not found Checking if your system already has zlib installed: yes. Using Makefile.conf. Not all settings could be determined! The default Makefile was written. You will need to edit it before you can compile Scid. What should I do? Has anybody faced this problem before? Thanks in advance I have run ls -l /usr/include/tcl8.5/tcl.h here's the result: -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 87291 abr 22 10:45 /usr/include/tcl8.5/tcl.h I have also tried what you suggested Could you run git reset --hard HEAD and git clean -d -f to clean up everything using Git? Then run ./configure again. Just a shot in the dark - I've seen some GNU automake stuff still listening to its "cached" version of the results or something. Still no solution. I don't know why it can't recognize the library though it is installed I opened configure to see where the program looked for the library. This is the code: # libraryPath: List of possible locations of Tcl/Tk library. set libraryPath { /usr/lib /usr/lib64 /usr/local/tcl/lib /usr/local/lib /usr/X11R6/lib /opt/tcltk/lib /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu } lappend libraryPath "/usr/lib/tcl${tclv}" lappend libraryPath "/usr/lib/tk${tclv}" lappend libraryPath "/usr/lib/tcl${tclv_nodot}" lappend libraryPath "/usr/lib/tk${tclv_nodot}" # Try to add tcl_library and auto_path values to libraryPath, # in case the user has a non-standard Tcl/Tk library location: if {[info exists ::tcl_library]} { lappend headerPath \ [file join [file dirname [file dirname $::tcl_library]] include] lappend libraryPath [file dirname $::tcl_library] lappend libraryPath $::tcl_library } if {[info exists ::auto_path]} { foreach name $::auto_path { lappend libraryPath $name } } if {! [info exists var(TCL_INCLUDE)]} { puts -nonewline { Location of "tcl.h": } set opt(tcl_h) [findDir "tcl.h" $headerPath "TCL_VERSION.*$tclv"] if {$opt(tcl_h) == ""} { puts "not found" set success 0 set opt(tcl_h) "$::defaultVar(TCL_INCLUDE)" } else { puts $opt(tcl_h) } } set opt(tcl_lib) "" if {! [info exists var(TCL_LIBRARY)]} { puts -nonewline " Location of Tcl $tclv library: " set opt(tcl_lib) [findDir "libtcl${tclv}.*" $libraryPath] if {$opt(tcl_lib) == ""} { set opt(tcl_lib) [findDir "libtcl${tclv_nodot}.*" $libraryPath] if {$opt(tcl_lib) == ""} { puts "not found" set success 0 set opt(tcl_lib) "$opt(tcl_h)" set opt(tcl_lib_file) "tcl\$(TCL_VERSION)" } else { set opt(tcl_lib_file) "tcl${tclv_nodot}" puts $opt(tcl_lib) } } else { set opt(tcl_lib_file) "tcl\$(TCL_VERSION)" puts $opt(tcl_lib) } } if {! [info exists var(TCL_INCLUDE)]} { set var(TCL_INCLUDE) "-I$opt(tcl_h)" } if {! [info exists var(TCL_LIBRARY)]} { set var(TCL_LIBRARY) "-L$opt(tcl_lib) -l$opt(tcl_lib_file)" } return $success So I guess (And by guess I mean i have no idea how to code) I should write somewhere in here usr/lib/tcl8.5 and usr/lib/tk8.5, am I right?
