• Swing: what to do when a GUI update takes too long and freezes other GUI elements?

  Hello, everyone! I know that GUI code in Java Swing must be put inside SwingUtilities.invokeAndWait or SwingUtilities.invokeLater. This way threading works fine. Sadly, in my situation, the GUI update it that thing which takes much longer than background thread(s). More specific: I update a JTree with about just 400 entries, nesting depth is maximum 4, so should be nothing scary, right? But it takes sometimes one second! I need to ensure that the user is able to type in a JTextPane without delays. Well, guess what, the slow JTree updates do cause delays for JTextPane during input. It refreshes only as soon as the tree gets updated. I am using Netbeans and know empirically that a Java app can update lots of information without freezing the rest of the UI. How can it be done? NOTE 1: All those DefaultMutableTreeNodes are prepared outside the invokeAndWait. NOTE 2: When I replace invokeAndWait with invokeLater the tree doesn't get updated.

• locking database record for editing

  I have a SQL 2008 DB and an asp.net frontend. I would like to implement a lock when a user is currently editing a record but unsure of which is the best approach. My idea is to have a isLocked column for the records and it gets set to true when a user pulls that record, meaning all other users have read only access until the first user finishes the editing. However, what if the session times out and he/she never saves/updates the record, the record will remain with isLocked = true, meaning others cannot edit it, right? How can I implement some sort of session time out and have isLocked be automatically set to false when the session times out (or after a predefined period) Should this be implemented on the asp.net side or the SQL side?

• How do I detect when a cell's value has changed in Silverlight?

  Hey folks, I'm working in Silverlight, trying to figure out how to set a grid cell font color based on the contents of the cell. I have an ObservableCollection bound to a DataGrid, and my items implement INotifyPropertyChanged so the grid updates as I change the values; it's all working perfectly, including letting me sort items and keep the sorting while I update the underlying items. I know I can use the LoadingRow event to change colors, but the only way I can get the event to fire is by changing the grids datasource, in which case my sorting goes out the window. So, what I really want is a way to either 1) loop the rows in the datagrid, find the cell I need, and change it's color or 2) implement a custom column that I can use to dynamically set the color. The problem is how to actually do either of those things :) All suggestions welcome.

• Parallel port no longer accessible even though no changes to system.

  I have an old Dell Dimension 8200 running Gentoo which I use solely to control various things using the parallel port. After shutting it down a few weeks ago, I started it up again today and tried to access the parallel port like I usually do. Unfortunately, my code bombed out when it tried to call ioperm(888,1,1) to grab the parallel port which returned an error code of -1. There have been no changes to the system be it hardware or software, no updates, no tweaking, no dropping the case, no over-amping the data pins, nothing. The port and the software have been working fine for months with no changes, and were working fine when I shut it down last. Running my code with root privileges changes nothing. What is breaking this and how can I fix it?

• Can I update an iOS Enterprise App in the background like an App Store app can?

  I have an iOS enterprise app that we are wirelessly distributing to our devices. Currently the app polls our server once a day to see if there is an app update. If there is, we try to install it by having the app call the following code: NSURL *installUrl = [NSURL URLWithString:[NSString stringWithFormat:@"itms-services://?action=download-manifest&url=%@", plistUrl]]; [[UIApplication sharedApplication] openURL:installUrl]; This causes the app to prompt the user with an alert dialog to install the update. If they click install, the app closes and the update is downloaded and installed. I am wondering if there is anything for enterprise apps for iOS 7 similar to the AppStore's automatic updates? I would like to be able to update our app without the user having to press an update button and be able to update at a time when the user won't have to wait for it to install.

• svn working copy spanning 2 physical drives?

  I have a large repository hosted on dreamhost that I backup daily on a remote machine using a windows scheduled task which updates the working copy located on an external USB 300GB drive connected to the remote machine. The 300GB drive is nearly full with only 26GB of free space remaining. Recently I added a second USB external 1TB drive to increase storage capacity. I would like to ask: what is the best way to use the new 1TB drive? Is it possible to span the working copy across both drives (ex: somehow create a 1.3 TB drive)? If I copied the working copy from the 300GB to the 1TB would svn continue form do I need to retarget the update working copy script to the new 1TB drive and start downloading everything again (least desired option) thanks

• Is there a standard practice for storing default application data?

  Our application includes a default set of data. The default data includes coefficients and other factors that are unlikely to ever change but still need to be update-able by the user. Currently, the original default data is stored as a populated class within the application. Data updates are stored to an external XML file. This design allows us to include a "reset" feature to restore the original default data. Our rationale for not storing defaults externally [e.g. XML file] was to minimize the risk of being altered. The overall volume of data doesn't warrant a database. Is there a standard practice for storing "default" application data?

• onTextChanged Event for many Textboxes c#

  Hi, I am currently building a prototype for a new system screen, and i am using c# to build this. The question i have is, i currently have 14 textboxes which are filled from a condition from a couple of other controls on the screen. these 14 textboxes all add up to a total shown in another textbox. as these textboxes are editable (in case the client wishes to increase the value) (cant go into to much detail but they will) I need to have a firable ontextchange event for when the values change so the total box updates. however i have a feeling there must be a way of not having to create 14 different events, is there a way that i can have 1 event which fires if any of the 14 text boxes are fired? thanks Alan

• AJAX: Statusbar: force update of UpdatePanel while function executes

  Hi Guys, I have a label inside an update panel which I wouldl ike to use as a status bar. Basically the user clicks a button which executes a main fucntion that performs a series of tasks. I'd like to inform the user as to the state of the function as it progresses e.g.: Stage 1: Retrieving data... Stage 2: Calculating values... Stage 3: Printing values... Stage 4: Done! I've tried updating the updatepanel directly from the function but it only updates the panel at the end of function (stage 4) and shows "Done!" (which I understand is how it should work). I've been looking into timers and threads to try and update the panel seperate to the main function but I thought I'd post here incase anyone has any better ideas? Thanks for any help in advance! • Browser back button broken between hidden div's

  First of all, these pages will never be on the web but will be in internal memory. They are a group of linked documents---an ebook. http://www.anmldr.com/testdivs When I click on the link in the first div, the second div becomes visible and the first div is hidden. The problem is with the browser's back button. If you then click on the back button, the URL updates but the first div does not show again. How can I correct the back button so that the first div shows? The link from the second div to the first div works fine but it is the browser back button that I do not know how to work with. • Working with the Objective-C/Cocoa flat namespace

  I've not found anything that addresses my specific name space question as yet. I am working on some AudioUnit plug-ins featuring Cocoa based GUIs. The plug-ins use a common library of user interface classes (sliders, buttons etc) which are simply added to each Xcode project. When I recompile and distribute updates it is pretty much guaranteed that at least one user interface class will have been updated since the last release. If the user launches an older plug-in before an updated plug-in then the old Cocoa classes are already loaded into the run time and the plug-in attempts to use the older implementations - often resulting in a failure one way or another. I know frameworks are the intended solution but the overhead and backwards compatibility issues are not ideal. I prefix all class names where possible but what options do I have to ensure that each plug-in contains unique class names for the shared user interface classes?

• cfgrid boolean column as Yes/No

  I have a boolean type column in an html cfgrid. The data is stored in the database as 1/0 and is returned from CF as such. I want the user to see Yes/No instead of 1/0. I tried QuerySetCell, and couldn't get it to work. The form is editable, when you double click the cell, the checkboxes show and it updates as it should. • One executable with cmd-line params or just many satellite executables?

  I design an application back-end. For now, it is a .NET process (a Console Application) which hosts various communication frameworks such as Agatha and NServiceBus. I need to periodically update my datastore with values (coming from the application while it's running). I found three possible ways: Accept command line arguments, so I can call my console app with -update. On start up a background thread will periodically invoke the update method. Create an updater.exe app which will do the updates, but I will have code duplication since in some way it will need to query the data from the source in order to save it to the datastore. Which one is better?

(1 label, and 1 button on each row). Goal: when I click the button, I want the appropriate label to be updated. I dont know how to do this. I can reference a label via: Label myLabel2Update = (Label)Repeater1.Controls[0].Controls[0].FindControl("Label1"); But ofcourse, it will be the same label each time (not necessarily the label that needs to be updated). I need to update the label that is on the same row as the button. Any guidance would be appreciated.

  PostgreSQL stores statistics about tables in the system table called pg_class. The query planner accesses this table for every query. These statistics may only be updated using the analyze command. If the analyze command is not run often, the statistics in this table may not be accurate and the query planner may make poor decisions which can degrade system performance. Another strategy is for the query planner to generate these statistics for each query (including selects, inserts, updates, and deletes). For instance, if the following are the classes: class A { ... } class B { ... std::list<A> _a_list; ... } I have provided load/save methods for loading/saving to the db. Now, if I take the case of B and the following workflow: 1 entry from _a_list is removed 1 entry from _a_list is modified 1 entry is added to _a_list Now, I need to update the db using something like "b.save()". • Is SELECT INTO able to affect data from its original table during UPDATE

  Whilst asking this question asp.net scheduling timed events user murph posted some insightful information: Point about this is that its very, very simple - you have an process for exchange that is performing a clearly defined task and you have a high frequency task that is not doing anything particularly complex, its a straightforward query (select from table where sent = false and send at < value) - probably into temporary table so that you can run a single query update after you've done the sends - that you can optimise the index for. You're not trying to queue up a huge pile of event triggers, just one that fires once a minute and processes things that are due. Is it possible to SELECT data from table X INTO table Y and have the UPDATES that are performed on table Y pushed into table X? I guess the alternative would be that the data gets updated in table Y then an update command can be run on table X based on the data in table Y. What would be the advantage of selecting into another table? Thank you,

• Can I send a variable to paypal, and have it post it back to me when payment completes?

  Ive been using express checkout API to convert people's accounts on my site to premium accounts after paying. The only problem with it is that it doesn't send the user back to the site until they click the button to return, and it updates their permission when that happens. About 40% of the users don't seem to do that.... so their accounts never get credited after payment. Although paypal does an instant post-back upon the successful payment, I was never able to make it actually update the user's account right away, since I cant get it to send back some sort of informational that would identify the user that just completed the payment. I could only do that when you are sent back to the site, which sends the transaction ID, that I logged with a post-back. It searches for it, and grants permission if it was found int he DB. Is there a way to submit some sort of a variable to paypal, that it will then post back to me? Something like &user_id=123, which would make it very handly to update the user's permission.

• How can I implement a "wizard" style page using JQuery?

  I am implementing a questionnaire on the web and I'd like for each block of questions to have its own "page" so the user doesn't have to scroll. However, page loads have two problems: a) they take time (and have a noticeable flicker/refresh) and b) such an approach would force me to do a data table insert plus multiple updates (or store it all in my session). How can I use JQuery to let the user page through the questionnaire on the client side, answering questions as he goes? I'll then be able to handle the data store when all the answers are submitted at the end. One other thing...is there a way to make sure that the session doesn't time out if the user takes awhile?

• WPF update binding in a background thread

  I have a control that has its data bound to a standard ObservableCollection, and I have a background task that calls a service to get more data. I want to, then, update my backing data behind my control, while displaying a "please wait" dialog, but when I add the new items to the collection, the UI thread locks up while it re-binds and updates my controls. Can I get around this so that my animations and stuff keep running on my "please wait" dialog? Or at least give the "appearance" to the user that its not locked up?

  I'm pulling from a repository that only I have access to. As far as I know, I've only pushed to it from one repository. A couple of times, I've pulled from it and gotten this: To [email protected]:tsched_dev.git ! [rejected] master -> master (non-fast-forward) error: failed to push some refs to '[email protected]:tsched_dev.git' To prevent you from losing history, non-fast-forward updates were rejected Merge the remote changes before pushing again. See the 'Note about fast-forwards' section of 'git push --help' for details. Generally, that just means that I have to do a git pull (although all the changes should be fast-forwardable). When I do a git pull, I get conflicts. If I do a git pull --rebase, it works fine. What am I doing wrong?

I am using SQL Server 2008 My questions are, Is there a way to find out what action is being taken on a record without going through the selection phase of the deleted and inserted tables? Another question is, if the record is being deleted, how do I record within the audit table the user that is performing the delete.   I'm using Entity Framework 4.1 with a Code-First approach on an ASP.NET MVC site Say I have an entity named Profile that keeps track of a user's favorite book, and I want to track when the user updates their favorite book. UPDATED: Using the class below as an example, I want to set the FavoriteBookLastUpdated property to the current date whenever the value of the FavoriteBook property changes. public class Profile { public int Id { get; set; } public string Name { get; set; } public string FavoriteBook { get; set; } public DateTime? FavoriteBookLastUpdated { get; set; } } Right now I just update that field, if appropriate, in the controller's Edit action before calling the DBContext's SaveChanges() method. • How to manage Libraries/jar files in eclipse?

  I might be missing something but how do you manage Java projects in eclipse that need a lot of Jar files. I know maven manages libraries well if there are new updates but maybe I'm missing something, is there a way that eclipse can update new jar files (it would be especially useful for projects using apache-commons, say). I don't want to sound like asking for a feature request, but I'm looking at if there are ways to keep libraries jar files that a Java project uses to keep them updated automatically the way maven does. With more languages coming with this type of features, finding the right Jar files probably should be easier than this.
