  What are some good ideas, common approaches and appropriate questions that you would bring when interviewing a software development intern to join your team? I really don't have expectations of any kind for this person, I understand that as an intern with no prior work experience that he won't have much to bring to the table. I am more or less looking for a good attitude and somebody willing to learn. What would be appropriate if you intend to put this intern 70/30 (QA Testing/Coding)? Would that be a good internship experience in your opinion?

• How do I interview Front-end focused web developers?

  For the first time I'm in the position where I'm helping interview potential front-end developers. (The other interviewer is more business & PM-focused, although he is a former developer.) I probe for knowledge and background in css, js, and other related technologies, but those questions are really just testing for lingo. I feel that it'd be unfair to ask very specific questions about css when we're not infront of a computer, because my style of programming css is a lot of guesswork. I've also been given websites that these web developers have written-- is that enough to go on for interviewing front-ends? We're also looking for general aptitude, rather than a databank of knowledge.

• How can I restart compiz from tty? (& Related, how can I set up a fallback WM?)

  So I'm testing Natty, and Compiz keeps crashing on me. I expect this sort of thing from alpha software, of course, but it doesn't always give me the option to restart compiz, and for some reason doesn't have a fallback WM configured. Without a window manager, all my programs are still running, but they're not accepting input from the keyboard, and I can't switch between them. I can, however, press Ctrl+Alt+F1 and get a terminal, and I can killall Xorg to reset everything, but I'd rather just reset compiz if possible. If I try typing compiz --replace there in the tty, it complains "fatal--couldn't open display." Is there a way to have tty1 restart compiz? Like compiz --replace --display=something? Additionally, is there a way to configure a fallback window manager so that there's an easier way to recover from compiz crashing?

  We have just released an official certification exam for Oracle ADF Development.  This exam is aimed that those who are already getting hands-on with ADF and would like an official certification of their development skills. I was involved in writing some of the exam questions and this was an interesting experience.  We were looking to test not only a knowledge of the framework, but also a practical application of that knowledge.  Trying to do that in a clear question which related to multiple choice questions was sometimes difficult but I think we’ve produced a testing exam which, if you pass, shows a strong practical knowledge of ADF. • Is it possible that Unity would some day switch back to Mutter?

  I remembered that the first Unity was indeed built on Mutter, but later ported to Compiz due to poor performance. I also know Canonical practically incorporated Compiz to work closely for future Unity, so this is getting less likely. But Compiz just seems pretty outdated now that GNOME3/GTK3/Mutter is becoming more mainstreamed, and it is known to deliver some performance issue, but on the other hand Mutter seems pretty good and is still steadily developing now, I'm just wondering if anyone related to the project is still testing and evaluating the possibility of Unity on Mutter? Not that you have to tell me now if you're going to do it or not. I just wanna know if anyone is considering it. Thanks.

  Am Having issues with My Wireless 1 My laptop had dual boot windows 7 and Ubuntu 13.04 I upgraded to windows 8 and after the first 2-3 reboots all was working well in windows and ubuntu then my wireless in ubuntu stoped working saying "wifi is disabled by hardware switch" the hardware switch has no effect I removed network manager installed new firmwares and still nothing the wifi was not working in a moment of testing I installed wifi radar and this can detect the wireless signals and at one point it connected but still Network manger still says disabled. My Laptop is a HP Pavilion dm4 2070us with Wireless Centrino N 1000 I have updated to 13.10 thinking it would fix it but still nothing

• Web Platform Installer issues deploying Azure SDK 1.4 on refreshed systems.

  Recently I have been doing quite a bit of testing on different means to deploy the Azure SDKs and such. After a very successful couple of systems, I started running into issues last night. Here is the problem, if I go to the Windows Azure Website, and go to Develop, then click on the SDK and Tools, then Get Tools & SDK, it launches the Web Platform Installer.  All seems well at that point, except it will go through the initial process, will find the SDK files for 1.4, but since the tools for Visual Studio are still 1.3, the location throws back a 404, which causes the Installer to fail.  NOTE:If you already had SDK 1.3 and the tools in place, it will go through. • Should concrete classes avoid calling other concrete classes, except for data objects?

  In Appendix A to The Art of Unit Testing, Roy Osherove, speaking about ways to write testable code from the start, says, An abstract class shouldn't call concrete classes, and concerete classes shouldn't call concrete classes either, unless they're data objects (objects holding data, with no behavior). (259) The first half of the sentence is simply Dependency Inversion from SOLID. The second half seems rather extreme to me. That means that every time I'm going to write a class that isn't a simple data structure, which is most classes, I should write an interface or abstract class first, right? Is it really worthwhile to go that far in defining abstract classes an interfaces? Can anyone explain why in more detail, or refute it in spite of its benefit for testability?

• How to reset setting of Wine, avoiding uninstalling all applications in it?

  Foobar2000 volume slider stopped working in Wine Sound is good but volume cannot be changed from the player's slider anymore. Is there a setting in Wine that might have entailed this? I have tested [Vineyard][1] (also) and then gave it up on which occasion some setting in Wine might have been altered but cannot see which. Edit: This affects the main installation (v.1.1.15) made in Wine, and also portable installations of the same version (as well as portable installations of v.1.1.14 and 1.1.17b that I tested) but does not affect older versions like 1.0.3. After testing more versions, it seems that the newest version without this problem is 1.1. (That is, before the version that changed the classic white-on-black Foobar2000 icon with the new white one.)

• Bad texture on model with different GPU

  I have some kind of distortion on the texture of my 3D model. It works perfectly well on an AMD GPU, but when testing on a integrated Intel HD graphics card it has a weird issue. I don't have a problem with the rest of my entities as they are not scaled. The models with the problems are scaled, as my engine supports different sizes for the platforms. I am using Ogre3D as rendering engine, and GLSL as shader language. • sell applications that run only on a GPL v2 Server

  I have been testing Pentaho BI server community edition, and after reading their licensing terms I found out that the community edition is under GPLv2. As you may know the server is intended to host different types of files and applications (like reports, olap cubes,etc...) My question is : are we allowed to sell applications that run on the GPLv2 server ? (we will maybe modify the server source code a bit but we won't charge it to our clients. thus the modified GPL server will be just an execution environment or a container for the reports and applications that we intend to sell) ? this suggests that our clients must install the GPL v2 edition first and then buy from us the reports that work on it but not their source code. But coming from basic TDD background, what I used to was, first write unittest for database models write test for views (at this point start with integration test as well, along with unittests) write more integration tests for testing UI stuff. What would be a correct way to approach BDD. Say I have a simple blog application. Given : When a user logs in. He should be shown list of all his posts. • IP/PORT forward requests to another server

  I have the following listening PORT:IP set up on my UBuntu server. 12.345.67.890:3636 It receives requests perfectly, however, I would now like to forward any requests to that IP:PORT to another IP:PORT, i.e.: 09.876.54.321:3636 Essentially I want to do a request forward 12.345.67.890:3636 -> 09.876.54.321:3636. How can I go about it in Terminal and if I wanted to change it back how can I go about that too? Is there also a way to test that the data is forwarding and it is setup properly? Thanks!   Possible Duplicate: Slow wireless with an Intel 4965 We run Ubuntu 12.04, 32bit, with the current kernel 3.2.27-generic on an MSI EX700. I've already added the 11n_disable=1 tweek, without whcih, wireless has been unusable. Now, it works OK, but speedtest shows: Windows XP - down 11.68mbps, up 2.07mbps Ubuntu 12.04 - down 2.06mbps up 2.0mbps We've disabled ipv6, tried static and dinamic IPs, tried both swcrypto=0 and swcrypto=1 options, none of whcih made any difference. The problem may be the symptom of high packet loss. • How do I make Unity quit opening Firefox under the Shiretoko icon?

  I'm using Ubuntu 12.04, and whenever I open Firefox, whether it is from searching on the dash or clicking a 'quick-launch' launcher, it always opens yet another icon for the running instance that is a blank page and says Shiretoko. It will pulse the Firefox icon for a while (I'm guessing until a timeout or something). It's as if Unity no longer recognizes the Firefox process as Firefox and misidentifies it as Shiretoko. (I know Shiretoko was a testing version of Firefox a long time ago.) How do I set Unity straight? I imagine that it has something to do with me once using Shiretoko, but I believe that was even on a different installation, just the same home folder. Is there some place Unity caches this information that I can clear (or remove specific parts of)?

  Hi, I'm about to set up a server upon which a friend and I will be hosting web sites, and I'll be using Debian. I've set up a LAMP solution many times just to using for local testing purposes, but never for actual production use. I was wondering what are the best practices are in terms of setting the server up, in reference specifically to accessing the web root directory. A couple of the options I have seen: Set up a single user account on the server for us both to use and use a virtual host to point to the somewhere in the home directory, e.g. /home/webdev/www. Set each of us up a user account, and grant permissions in some way to /var/www (What would be the best way? Set up a new group?) I want to get this right when I first set this up as there won't be any going back for a while once our first site is up and running. Appreciate any guidance in advance.

  Recently I had reason to be very glad that I had Fiddler. I was able to record some web service traffic and identify a problem as Fiddler can record both the call to a web service and response from the web service. By seeing the actual data traffic I was able to resolve a problem found in testing in less time than it has taken me to write this blog entry!   I'm making a tile based game in XNA So currently my lightning looks like this: How can I get it to look like this? Instead of each block having its own tint, it has a smooth overlay. I'm assuming some sort of shader, and to tell it the lighting and blur it some how. But im not an expert with shaders. My current lighting calculates the light, and then passes it to a spritebatch and draws with a color parameter EDIT: No longer uses spritebatch tint, I was testing and now pass parameters to set the light values. But still looking for a way to smooth it

• new installation won't sync directories with my account

  I had a dual-boot arrangement on my desktop with 12.04 and 12.10 (testing). Last week, I managed to trash both and ended up re-installing both. After doing all the updates, I activated Ubuntu-one which worked just fine on the previous installations. On both 12.04 and 12.10, the Ubuntu-One window fails to show the folders for syncing and only syncs the Ubuntu-One folder. Adding a folder on my net book on which sync is working properly brings up a pop up on my desktop that tells me a new folder is available for syncing - but the Ubuntu window fails to show it. I have put a screenshot from my net book (working OK) and one from my desktop which shows the problem. Any suggestions please?
