  • Add files/folders/Apps to a new User Account

    I have created a new user acct. for my roommate. I/we don't really care much for IE, and I'd like to add Google Chrome, and FF for her, to let her choose her own browser. Plus I'd like to add some other apps for her, and transfer some of her personal info that she's been storing on my administrative acct. (i.e. personal photos and such). So, like I said the account is set up. But when I go to use Chrome, it won't open. It, along with other apps are listed in the list of "approved" applications under the parental control list. (Application Restrictions List) But they either don't show up when searched for,( in her acct.) or won't open and operate. One other example is Faststone Capture. And then, I've got one application, Yahoo, "Unchecked", and yet there it is in her account, AND IT WORKS! I do not get it. The purpose to setting up an account for her was to only restrict that she couldn't delete, or uninstall anything on the computer. I don't care, (obviously within reason) what she installs, but NO TAKING AWAY! lol Here is a screen shot of the restrictions list: So, here I sit, wondering what I did wrong, or forgot to do in order for these to work. I don't care if Yahoo works or not. But her photos being transferred, Chrome/FF working, and Faststone Capture working, are a priority for me. If anyone has any ideas, I would appreciate any advice. Thanks! OH Edit: Also, my account is an Administrative one. The account I am creating for her is just a Standard User Acct.

  • How to shuffle pieces of large video files?

    Hi Folks, For a party we want to show film-fragments using a projector. We have around 50 full-length movie avis and would like to shuffle them in shorter pieces. So every ca. 2-5 minutes another piece should begin. For example a sequence could be: Movie05-12m00s-14m30s, Movie08-55m50s-57m00s, Movie02-02m42s-06m40s, etc. So, random movies, at random positions within the movie of random lengths. What would be the kind of solution we're looking for? We were thinking 2 scenarios: Before doing this use some kind of tool to cut all avis in smaller pieces and put them on shuffle in a regular media player A sort of "VJ" program that can do this shuffle mixing realtime. Any suggestions for any of the above scenarios? Thanks!

  • Is ffmpeg incorrectly interpreting .aif files?

    Being on an Ubuntu 10.04 server i installed the ffmpeg packages with apt. ffmpeg is working afterwards, and doing as it should. Almost. For testing purposes i uploaded a few audiofiles. One of them, an aif file, is not being correctly interpreted. While on my workhorse (Mac SnowLeopard) ffmpeg tells the format as Stream #0.0: Audio: pcm_s24be, 44100 Hz, 2 channels, s32, 2116 kb/s my Ubuntu server says it is: Stream #0.0: Audio: pcm_s24be, 44100 Hz, stereo, s16, 2116 kb/s which is the wrong bitdepth. Ubuntu then fails to convert the file with the error message [pcm_s24be @ 0xcd4b580]invalid PCM packet Error while decoding stream #0.0 which certainly is not true. The file is perfectly valid. Are there any know issues for ffmpeg interpreting the aif format? How can i find out which version of the aif-codec ffmpeg is using? Strange thing is: Even without using -sample_fmt s32 i just realized that the conversion is working and creates valid audiofiles. There just is the error message from above.

  • Wireless traffic stops when downloading large files at high speed: packets lost (Linksys WRT120N router)

    The problem Note: First I'd like to understand WHY this is happening. Ofcourse, a solution would be nice too. :) When downloading a large file over HTTP at high-speeds, my wireless traffic basically stops: I can't open webpages and the download itself pauses. It pauses pretty much immediately after starting it; sometimes at 800 KB, sometimes at a few MB. After some time, the download (and other traffic) resumes, but the problem keeps reoccurring during the same download. The problem does not occur when using a wired connection through the same router (Linskys WRT120N). Also note that the connection is not dropped when this happens. It's just that the traffic stops and I can't browse to web pages, etc. (SYN packets are sent but nothing is received, etc.) Inspection with Wireshark shows that the following happens: Server sends data packets which are acknowledged by client Server sends a packet, but SEQ indicates some packets were lost (6 packets in one occurrence). Server sends a few more packets and client acknowledges these using "selective acknowledgement" Server stops sending data for a while (since the lost packets were not acknowledged or the router stops forwarding them?) Eventually, server does a "retransmission" and traffic resumes as normal. This all seems normal behavior to me when packet loss occurs. It's the consistent packet loss throughout a large, high-speed download that puzzles me. What might cause this? My own idea is the following: My internet is pretty fast (100 mbps), so when starting a large-file download, the router buffers the incoming data (since wireless introduces some slight delay / lower speed, in part due to other networks), but the buffer overflows and the router drops packets to regulate traffic (and because it has no choice). But how could that happen? Doesn't the TCP window size limit the amount of data that can go unacknowledged? So how can the router's buffer overflow if there can only be like 64 KB waiting to be acknowledged? Note: I've disabled TCP window scaling and dynamic window size through netsh options, in an attempt to fix this, but it doesn't seem to matter. Also, Wireshark shows a pattern of the server sending 2 packets (of 1514 bytes) and the client sending an ACK, so does that rule out a possible buffer overflow? And a few more subsequent packets are received... I'm at a loss here. Thanks for any insights.     I want to access and play media files on machine S (Windows XP) from machine C (Windows XP). Using Windows File Sharing ("share this folder" stuff), if it works, I would share the folder containing media files on machine S, and I would be able to play media files, sitting in front of C, using any media player I want. Windows somehow ensures that the remote files behave like local files. But Windows file sharing won't work for me, is there any alternative? If two machines were both Linux, I would install an SSH server on S and use Nautilus from C to access and play media files. The reason why I can't use Windows file sharing is, my campus use two different subnets, I have S and C on different subnets and it seems that the firewall governing the whole network in campus doesn't allow file sharing between different subnets. I tried changing Windows Firewall settings on S to allow C in, it still wouldn't work, so it must be the other firewall.

  • OpenSSH SFTP: chrooted user with access to other chrooted users' files

    Decided to re-phrase the question entirely in order to not have to make a new one. I currently have an SFTP server set up using OpenSSH's SFTP functionality. All my users are chrooted, and everything works. What I need most right now is for one user, which is not root (because this user can't have any real SSH powers!), to have access to all other users' chrooted dirs. This user's job is to fetch all uploaded documents every once in a while. Directory structure as of now is: /home |_ /home/user1 |_ /home/user2 |_ /home/user3 With ChrootDirectory set as /home/%u User "adminuser" should have access to user1, user2 and user3's directories without having access to /home or at the very least not to anything but /home. Bonus points for the one who can tell me how to let users write inside /home/%u without having to make a new directory inside that dir which they own themselves, and not root as is the case with /home/%u (openssh chroot prerequisite).

  • Apache ProxyPass ignore static files

    Having an issue with Apache front server connecting to a Jetty application server.   • Converting SVG to UFO files

    I am working in PhotoImpact X3, whose native file format is .UFO. I want to bring an SVG file into it, but it doesn't recognize SVG format. All online converters I find (trying to convert it to .PSD, which PhotoImpact X3 recognizes) convert the SVG to a raster format, first, and I don't want that. Does anyone know a way to import an SVG file into PhotoImpact X3? Preferably as a .UFO or .PSD file, but any scaleable vector file format will work.

I want to tweak this to allow anyone to request a certain URL: http://example.com/public/file.html How do I change this to allow /public/file.html requests to get through from anyone? Note: /public/file.html doesn't actually exist as a file on the server. I redirect all incoming requests through a single index file using mod_rewrite.

    I am unable to get excel 2010 beta to save to a directory which contains square brackets. I have to save elsewhere and copy in. Is there any workaround? Was this a problem with older versions? I realize that I could manually change the directory names, but I didn't want to forgo a long standing organization scheme for the sake of one program if possible to avoid the problem.

  • Virtual Machine files on ramdisk doesn't run faster than on physical disk

    I installed total 36G memory (4x8G + 2x2G) in the host (Windows 7) and I used ImDisk to create a 32G ramdisk and format it to NTFS file system. Then I copied the virtual machine (in VMware Workstation format) folder, including vmx, vmdk, etc... to the new created ram disk. Then I tried to power on it in VMware Workstation. What made me surprised is that the performance is not better than before. It cost almost the same time to power on the Windows 7 VM. I check the Resource Monitor in the Windows 7 host, and the statistics of CPU, disk, network are rather normal. The memory has reported 3000+ hard fault/sec when guest OS boot then drop to 0 after the guest powered on. Any idea about this issue? I had thought the performance of ramdisk will be better than physical disk in this case. Am I wrong? Thanks.

    I'm deploying a .jar file to a tomcat instance (we're running 6.0.18 on Redhat linux) and according to the log output the old .jar is still being used. I've restarted everthing I can think of, have deleted the work directory etc.etc. but to no avail. I'm no tomcat expert, so here's my question: where should I look for to ascertain if tomcat is using a cached jar and how should I prevent it from doing so?

The biggest peeve is: Any file downloaded from IE is never saved to disk. IE shows the entire download progress bar and at the end of download, no file is saved anywhere on the disk!

    Dear al, I found out that my VM is running with a snapshot which is not visible in the snapshot manager. I found out also that the machine is running on a delta file (probably an old snaphot) I see there are procedures to consolidate snapshots but what i want to understand now is : Having a VMDK-flat disk of 50gb =which is actually the vdisk created at the beginning Now i have a DELTA file of 38 gb...and this file it is growing on daily basis. My question is : why the delta file is growing ? is that normal ? Please let me know what is behind.

    Recently I attempted to configure Microsoft's DFSR on Windows 2008 R2 to replicate a folder which was encrypted with EFS. The setup gave no errors or warnings, but later I read that DFSR does not support EFS in any way. There were also event logs in the DFSR event log indicating an encrypted file was found and wont be replicated. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc773238(v=ws.10).aspx#BKMK_052 My question is, are there any tools that would allow this to occur? Software based preferably.This would be replicating over LAN to destination node for two servers on the same domain.

  • organizing images by resolution with batch files

    Doing some digging I'm trying to figure out a command line solution for organizing very large archives of images based on their resolution into folders, 1920x1080, 1600x1200, 1600x900, etc. I've come across a few post on Superuser mentioning something called ImageMagick, is that the best method to the madness I'm trying to accomplish? I've never used any command line functions/applets/tools other then those that come from Microsoft. I'm rather new to command line usage but ive been enjoying the hell out of it using Powershell, xcopy and robocopy. I am slowly trying to push myself further into the Linux world with Ubuntu running on one of my physical machines as well as a virtual machine so that's an option as well.
