  I cannot figure out how to write this program, can someone please help me?! The purpose of this method is to practice manipulating St rings. Create a new program called Name.java. This program will take a name string consisting of EITHER a first name followed by a last name (nonstandar d format) or a last name followed by a comma then a first name (standard format). Ie . “Joe Smith” vs. “Smith, Joe”. This program will convert the string to standard format if it is not already in standard format. Write a method called hasComma that takes a name as an argument and that returns a boolean indicating whether it contains a comma. If i t does, you can assume that it is in last name first format. You can use the indexOf String m ethod to help you. Write a method called convertName that takes a name as an argument. It should check whether it contains a comma by calling your hasComma method. If it does, it should just return the string. If not, then it should assume th at the name is in first name first format, and it should return a new string that contains the name converted to last name comma first format. Uses charAt, length, substring, and indexOf methods. In your main program, loop, asking the user for a n ame string. If the string is not blank, call convertName and print the results. The loop terminat es when the string is blank. HINTS/SUGGESTIONS: Use the charAt, length, substring, and indexOf Str ing methods. Use scanner for your input. • Microsoft Silverlight Analytics Framework - Day 2 Part 2 of MIX 2010

  I went to the session on Microsoft Silverlight Analytics Framework (MSAF) today while here at MIX 2010.  It was a great walk through the features, ideas, and what the end goal is.  Michael Scherotter did a great job of lining up the ideas, intentions, and the functional ideas behind the framework. The framework is built around the Silverlight Behaviors.  If you aren't sure what behaviors are, check out these entries from Nikhilk.net Silverlight Behaviors, Silverlight 3 Drag Behavior, An Introduction to Behaviors, Triggers, and Actions, and of course the MSDN Documentation on the matter. Some of the key features of the framework is to support out-of-browser scenarios, which works perfectly with out Webtrends DX Web Services.  Offline scenarios, which again, we have worked toward supporting at Webtrends DC Web Services via caching and other criteria as needed.  Another feature that I was really stoked about is the Microsoft Expression Blend integration that removes the need for coding, thus simplifying the addition of analytics components based on events or other actions within a Silverlight Application.  This framework also easily supports A/B Testing (again, something we do quit a bit of at Webtrends with Webtrends Optimize. The last thing I really wanted to point out was the control support that this framework has support in already from Telerik RadControls, Smooth Streaming Media Element, and Microsoft Silverlight Media Framework Player 1.0.  These are implemented with behaviors and handlers exposed via MEF (Managed Extensibility Framework). All in all, great second day, great analytics framework for Silverlight, and great presentation.  Until tomorrow, adieu. • Firefox 12's hardware acceleration on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

  After I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (32 bits), Firefox 12 works fine but without hardware acceleration. Needless to say I have the latest nVidia's proprietary drivers installed and my Firefox Preferences, on "Advanced" tab, "Browsing" section, have the option "Use hardware acceleration when available" checked. I have tried the following things before asking this question: Creating a boolean key "webgl.force-enabled" and set it to true on Firefox's page about:config; Starting a new profile like commented on thread Mozilla Firefox 12 is very slow on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS; I have updated my nVidia driver to version 295.53. And none of this have worked. As you can see below in my Firefox's page about:support report, "Graphics" section shows no "GPU Accelerated Windows": Adapter Description NVIDIA Corporation -- GeForce GTX 460/PCIe/SSE2 Vendor ID NVIDIA Corporation Device ID GeForce GTX 460/PCIe/SSE2 Driver Version 4.2.0 NVIDIA 295.53 WebGL Renderer NVIDIA Corporation -- GeForce GTX 460/PCIe/SSE2 -- 4.2.0 NVIDIA 295.53 GPU Accelerated Windows 0 AzureBackend skia I use the following site to test hardware acceleration: http://ie.microsoft.com/testdrive/Performance/FishBowl/ On Windows 7 I get 60 fps even with 1,750 fishes on browser's Full Screen Mode (1680x1050x32bit-color). • Examples of permission-based authorization systems in .Net?

  I'm trying to figure out how to do roles/permissions in our application, and I am wondering if anyone knows of a good place to get a list of different permission-based authorization systems (preferably with code samples) and perhaps a list of pros/cons for each method. I've seen examples using simple dictionaries, custom attributes, claims-based authorization, and custom frameworks, but I can't find a simple explanation of when to use one over another and what the pros/cons are to using each method. (I'm sure there's other ways than the ones I've listed....) I have never done anything complex with permissions/authorization before, so all of this seems a little overwhelming to me and I'm having trouble figuring out what what is useful information that I can use and what isn't. What I DO know is that this is for a Windows environment using C#/WPF and WCF services. Some permission checks are done on the WCF service and some on the client. Some are business rules, some are authorization checks, and others are UI-related (such as what forms a user can see). They can be very generic like boolean or numeric values, or they can be more complex such as a range of values or a list of database items to be checked/unchecked. Permissions can be set on the group-level, user-level, branch-level, or a custom level, so I do not want to use role-based authorization. Users can be in multiple groups, and users with the appropriate authorization are in charge of creating/maintaining these groups. It is not uncommon for new groups to be created, so they can't be hard-coded.

• Acer Aspire One 725 - missing graphic card driver?

  Recently I bought an Acer Aspire One 725 Netbook and installed Ubuntu 12.10 on it. I bought it, because it can run HD movies and has Full HD on external VGA port. However, movies from youtube have a really slow framerate. If you open three tabs in Opera (for example g-mail, youtube and askubuntu) it gets really laggy. My suspicion is that the driver for graphic card is missing. When I check the System->Details->Graphics the driver is unknown. After running lspci | grep VGA I get this output: 00:01.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Device 980a From what I see, I have a AMD C70 processor integrated with (or something similar) AMD Radeon HD 6290. Has anyone had the same problem? Do you know which drivers need to be installed for the graphics to work properly? On official Acer page there are only drivers for Win7 and Win8... • Functional programming and stateful algorithms

  I'm learning functional programming with Haskell. In the meantime I'm studying Automata theory and as the two seem to fit well together I'm writing a small library to play with automata. Here's the problem that made me ask the question. While studying a way to evaluate a state's reachability I got the idea that a simple recursive algorithm would be quite inefficient, because some paths might share some states and I might end up evaluating them more than once. For example, here, evaluating reachability of g from a, I'd have to exclude f both while checking the path through d and c: So my idea is that an algorithm working in parallel on many paths and updating a shared record of excluded states might be great, but that's too much for me. I've seen that in some simple recursion cases one can pass state as an argument, and that's what I have to do here, because I pass forward the list of states I've gone through to avoid loops. But is there a way to pass that list also backwards, like returning it in a tuple together with the boolean result of my canReach function? (although this feels a bit forced) Besides the validity of my example case, what other techniques are available to solve this kind of problems? I feel like these must be common enough that there have to be solutions like what happens with fold* or map. So far, reading learnyouahaskell.com I didn't find any, but consider I haven't touched monads yet. (if interested, I posted my code on codereview)

• Slick2D + LWJGL collision system

  So I've been learning java for a while and have explored slick and lwjgl before but went away from using Slick for a while. But I've recently gone back to using it (as I'm making a platformer and Tiled will be really helpful). But here's where my problems begin: collision. I have a player polygon and I check to see if it's colliding with my tiled map with this method: public static boolean playerCollisionWith() { for(int i = 0; i < Blockmap.entities.size(); i++) { Block entity1 = (Block) Blockmap.entities.get(i); if(playerPoly.intersects(entity1.poly)) { return true; } } return false; } This would work normally but I'm using a different method for movement. Instead of just adding a speed variable to the player's x axis. I move like this: if(Keyboard.isKeyDown(Keyboard.KEY_RIGHT)) { speedX = Math.min(5, speedX + 1); moving = true; playerPoly.setX(x); if(playerCollisionWith()) { speedX = -5; playerPoly.setX(x); } } That Math.min call is what is messing me up =. I can't just call speedX = -5, because when I do the player "bounces" when the right mouse button is down and it's colliding. Bounces as in flashes back and forth REALLY quickly. But I don't really know how I would make it so that collisions on the y axis would work either, whether the player is jumping or not. So if I could get some help with how to fix this problem that would be great. Thank you for the help!

• 7u45 Caller-Allowable-Codebase and Trusted-Library

  Java 7 update 45 (October 2013) changed the interactions between JavaScript and Java Applets made through LiveConnect. The 7u45 update is a critical patch update that has also raised the security baseline and users are strongly recommended to upgrade. Versions below the security baseline used to apply the Trusted-Library Manifest attribute to call between sandboxed code and higher-privileged code. The Trusted-Library value was a Boolean true or false. Security changes for the current security baseline (7u45) introduced a different Caller-Allowable-Codebase that indicates precisely where these LiveConnect calls can originate. For example, LiveConnect calls should not necessarily originate from 3rd party components of a web page or other DOM-based browser manipulations (pdf). Additional information about these can be located at “JAR File Manifest Attributes for Security.” The workaround for end-user dialogs is described on the 7u45 release notes, which explains removing the Trusted-Library attribute for LiveConnect calls in favor of Caller-Allowable-Codebase. This provides necessary protections (without warnings) for all users at or above the security baseline. Client installations automatically detect updates to the secure baseline and prompt users to upgrade. Warning dialogs above or below Both of these attributes should work together to support the various versions of client installations. We are aware of the issue that modifying the Manifest to use the newer Caller-Allowable-Codebase causes warnings for users below the security baseline and that not doing it displays a warning for users above. For users who need to stay below the security baseline System Administrators that schedule software deployments across managed computers may consider applying a Deployment Rule Set as described in Option 1 of “What to do if your applet is blocked or warns of mixed code.” System Administrators may also sign up for email notifications of Critical Patch Updates.

• case-specific mod rewrite on Wordpress subdomain multisite

  I have split a Wordpress blog into multiple category-specific blogs using subdomains, as the topics in the original blog were too broad to be lumped together effectively. Posts were exported from the parent www blog and imported into the subject-specific subdomain blogs. I believe .htaccess provides mod rewrite for all subdomains (including the original www) in a single .htaccess file. I use .htaccess to perform 301 redirect on post categories to the relevant post on the subdomain's blog. eg: RedirectMatch 301 ^/auto/(.*)$ http://auto.example.com/$1 The problem I have is that the category has been retained in the permalink structure in the subdomain blog, so that www.example.com/auto/mercedes is now auto.example.com/auto/mercedes. The 1st URL is redirect to the 2nd, but unfortunately, the 2nd URL is redirected to auto.example.com/mercedes using the same rewrite rule, which is not found, as the permalink on the subdomain's blog retains the parent category of auto. The solution would be to adjust the permalink structure in the subdomain's WP settings, so that the top level category does not duplicate the subdomain. My question would be: how do I then strip a section of the original (www) blog's post URL from the subdomain's URL when redirecting? eg: How do I redirect www.example.com/auto/mercedes to auto.example.com/mercedes? I'm assuming this would be a regular expression trick, which I am not great at. Update: I might have to use: RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !auto.example.com$ in the default Wordpress if loop in .htaccess, and seperate my custom subdomain redirections into a second if loop section.

• Introduction to LinqPad Driver for StreamInsight 2.1

  We are announcing the availability of the LinqPad driver for StreamInsight 2.1. The purpose of this blog post is to offer a quick introduction into the new features that we added to the StreamInsight LinqPad driver. We’ll show you how to connect to a remote server, how to inspect the entities present of that server, how to compose on top of them and how to manage their lifetime. Installing the driver Info on how to install the driver can be found in an earlier blog post here. Establishing connections As you click on the “Add Connection” link in the left pane you will notice that now it’s possible to build the data context automatically. The new driver appears as an option in the upper list, and if you pick it you will open a connection dialog that lets you connect to a remote StreamInsight server. The connection dialog lets you specify the address of the remote server. You will notice that it’s possible to pick up the binding information from the configuration file of the LinqPad application (which is normally in the same folder as LinqPad.exe and is called LinqPad.exe.config). In order for the context to be generated you need to pick an application from the server. The control is editable hence you can create a new application if you don’t want to make changes to an existing application. If you choose a new application name you will be prompted for confirmation before this gets created. Once you click OK the connection is created and you can start issuing queries against the remote server. If there’s any connectivity error the connection is marked with a red X and you can see the error message informing you what went wrong (i.e., the remote server could not be reached etc.). The context for remote servers Let’s take a look at what happens after we are connected successfully. Every LinqPad query runs inside a context – think of it as a class that wraps all the code that you’re writing. If you’re connecting to a live server the context will contain the following: The application object itself. All entities present in this application (sources, sinks, subjects and processes). The picture below shows a snapshot of the left pane of LinqPad after a successful connection. Every entity on the server has a different icon which will allow users to figure out its purpose. You will also notice that some entities have a string in parentheses following the name. It should be interpreted as such: the first name is the name of the property of the context class and the second name is the name of the entity as it exists on the server. Not all valid entity names are valid identifier names so in cases where we had to make a transformation you see both. Note also that as you hover over the entities you get IntelliSense with their types – more on that later. Remoting is not supported As you play with the entities exposed by the context you will notice that you can’t read and write directly to/from them. If for instance you’re trying to dump the content of an entity you will get an error message telling you that in the current version remoting is not supported. This is because the entity lives on the remote server and dumping its content means reading the events produced by this entity into the local process. ObservableSource.Dump(); Will yield the following error: Reading from a remote 'System.Reactive.Linq.IQbservable`1[System.Int32]' is not supported. Use the 'Microsoft.ComplexEventProcessing.Linq.RemoteProvider.Bind' method to read from the source using a remote observer. This basically tells you that you can call the Bind() method to direct the output of this source to a sink that has to be defined on the remote machine as well. You can’t bring the results to the LinqPad window unless you write code specifically for that. Compose queries You may ask – what's the purpose of all that? After all the same information is present in the EventFlowDebugger, why bother with showing it in LinqPad? First of all, What gets exposed in LinqPad is not what you see in the debugger. In LinqPad we have a property on the context class for every entity that lives on the server. Because LinqPad offers IntelliSense we in fact have much more information about the entity, and more importantly we can compose with that entity very easily. For example, let’s say that this code creates an entity: using (var server = Server.Connect(...)) {     var a = server.CreateApplication("WhiteFish");     var src = a         .DefineObservable<int>(() => Observable.Range(0, 3))         .Deploy("ObservableSource"); If later we want to compose with the source we have to fetch it and then we can bind something to     a.GetObservable<int>("ObservableSource)").Bind(... This means that we had to know a bunch of things about this: that it’s a source, that it’s an observable, it produces a result with payload Int32 and it’s named “ObservableSource”. Only the second and last bits of information are present in the debugger, by the way. As you type in the query window you see that all the entities are present, you get IntelliSense support for them and it’s much easier to make sense of what’s available. Let’s look at a scenario where composition is plausible. With the new programming model it’s possible to create “cold” sources that are parameterized. There was a way to accomplish that even in the previous version by passing parameters to the adapters, but this time it’s much more elegant because the expression declares what parameters are required. Say that we hover the mouse over the ThrottledSource source – we will see that its type is Func<int, int, IQbservable<int>> - this in effect means that we need to pass two int parameters before we can get a source that produces events, and the type for those events is int – in the particular case of my example I had the source produce a range of integers and the two parameters were the start and end of the range. So we see how a developer can create a source that is not running yet. Then someone else (e.g. an administrator) can pass whatever parameters appropriate and run the process. Proxy Types Here’s an interesting scenario – what if someone created a source on a server but they forgot to tell you what type they used. Worse yet, they might have used an anonymous type and even though they can refer to it by name you can’t figure out how to use that type. Let’s walk through an example that shows how you can compose against types you don’t need to have the definition of. This is how we can create a source that returns an anonymous type: Application.DefineObservable(() => Observable.Range(1, 10).Select(i => new { I = i })).Deploy("O1"); Now if we refresh the connection we can see the new source named O1 appear in the list. But what’s more important is that we now have a type to work with. So we can compose a query that refers to the anonymous type. var threshold = new StreamInsightDynamicDriver.TypeProxies.AnonymousType1_0<int>(5); var filter = from i in O1              where i > threshold              select i; filter.Deploy("O2"); You will notice that the anonymous type defined with this statement: new { I = i } can now be manipulated by a client that does not have access to it because the LinqPad driver has generated another type in its stead, named StreamInsightDynamicDriver.TypeProxies.AnonymousType1_0. This type has all the properties and fields of the type defined on the server, except in this case we can instantiate values and use it to compose more queries. It is worth noting that the same thing works for types that are not anonymous – the test is if the LinqPad driver can resolve the type or not. If it’s not possible then a new type will be generated that approximates the type that exists on the server. Control metadata In addition to composing processes on top of the existing entities we can do other useful things. We can delete them – nothing new here as we simply access the entities through the Entities collection of the application class. Here is where having their real name in parentheses comes handy. There’s another way to find out what’s behind a property – dump its expression. The first line in the output tells us what’s the name of the entity used to build this property in the context. Runtime information So let’s create a process to see what happens. We can bind a source to a sink and run the resulting process. If you right click on the connection you can refresh it and see the process present in the list of entities. Then you can drag the process to the query window and see that you can have access to process object in the Processes collection of the application. • 8-Puzzle Solution executes infinitely [migrated]

  I am looking for a solution to 8-puzzle problem using the A* Algorithm. I found this project on the internet. Please see the files - proj1 and EightPuzzle. The proj1 contains the entry point for the program(the main() function) and EightPuzzle describes a particular state of the puzzle. Each state is an object of the 8-puzzle. I feel that there is nothing wrong in the logic. But it loops forever for these two inputs that I have tried : {8,2,7,5,1,6,3,0,4} and {3,1,6,8,4,5,7,2,0}. Both of them are valid input states. What is wrong with the code? Note For better viewing copy the code in a Notepad++ or some other text editor(which has the capability to recognize java source file) because there are lot of comments in the code. Since A* requires a heuristic, they have provided the option of using manhattan distance and a heuristic that calculates the number of misplaced tiles. And to ensure that the best heuristic is executed first, they have implemented a PriorityQueue. The compareTo() function is implemented in the EightPuzzle class. The input to the program can be changed by changing the value of p1d in the main() function of proj1 class. The reason I am telling that there exists solution for the two my above inputs is because the applet here solves them. Please ensure that you select 8-puzzle from teh options in the applet. EDITI gave this input {0,5,7,6,8,1,2,4,3}. It took about 10 seconds and gave a result with 26 moves. But the applet gave a result with 24 moves in 0.0001 seconds with A*. • C/C++: Who uses the logical operator macros from iso646.h and why?

  There has been some debate at work about using the merits of using the alternative spellings for C/C++ logical operators in iso646.h: and && and_eq &= bitand & bitor | compl ~ not ! not_eq != or || or_eq |= xor ^ xor_eq ^= According to Wikipedia, these macros facilitate typing logical operators in international (non-US English?) and non-QWERTY keyboards. All of our development team is in the same office in Orlando, FL, USA and from what I have seen we all use the US English QWERTY keyboard layout; even Dvorak provides all the necessary characters. Supporters of using the iso646.h macros claim we should them because they are part of the C and C++ standards. I think this argument is moot since digraphs and trigraphs are also part of these standards and they are not even supported by default in many compilers. My rationale for opposing these macros in our team is that we do not need them since: Everybody on our team uses the US English QWERTY keyboard layout; C and C++ programming books from the US barely mention iso646.h, if at all; and new developers may not be familiar with iso646.h (this is expected if they are from the US). /rant Finally, to my set of questions: Does anyone in this site use the iso646.h logical operator macros? Why? What is your opinion about using the iso646.h logical operator macros in code written and maintained on US English QWERTY keyboards? Is my digraph and trigraph analogy a valid argument against using iso646.h with US English QWERTY keyboard layouts? EDIT: I missed two similar questions in StackOverflow: Is anybody using the named boolean operators? Which C++ logical operators do you use: and, or, not and the ilk or C style operators? why?

• Formatting: Group Multiline Alignment - Added

  One week ago I have added two new properties for formating PHP code into NetBeans 7.1. In Alignment category there are new properties for Group Multiline Alignment - Assignment and Array Initializer.  The Assignment property influence position of the char '=' in a group of lines with assignments.  Let see the pictures below.  On the left site -  Assignment property is off and on the right site the property is on. As you can see, when the property is set on, then the assignment char '=' is placed after the longest identifier in a group. The group is defined as a number of lines that contains the same type of assignments. End of a group can be empty line, line where is only a comment, different expression, end of a block. This formatting options works for variable assignment, field initialization and constants.  The second new property is for Array Initializer.   Both properties are switched off by default. • When and why you should use void (instead of i.e. bool/int)

  I occasionally run into methods where a developer chose to return something which isn't critical to the function. I mean, when looking at the code, it apparently works just as nice as a void and after a moment of thought, I ask "Why?" Does this sound familiar? Sometimes I would agree that most often it is better to return something like a bool or int, rather then just do a void. I'm not sure though, in the big picture, about the pros and cons. Depending on situation, returning an int can make the caller aware of the amount of rows or objects affected by the method (e.g., 5 records saved to MSSQL). If a method like "InsertSomething" returns a boolean, I can have the method designed to return true if success, else false. The caller can choose to act or not on that information. On the other hand, May it lead to a less clear purpose of a method call? Bad coding often forces me to double-check the method content. If it returns something, it tells you that the method is of a type you have to do something with the returned result. Another issue would be, if the method implementation is unknown to you, what did the developer decide to return that isn't function critical? Of course you can comment it. The return value has to be processed, when the processing could be ended at the closing bracket of method. What happens under the hood? Did the called method get false because of a thrown error? Or did it return false due to the evaluated result? What are your experiences with this? How would you act on this?

• Powershell: Install-dotNET4 function

  This function will download and install ,NET 4.0. It uses the Get-Framework-Versions function to determine if the installation is necessary or not. Internet Connectivity will be required as the script auto downloads the setup file (and sleeps for 360 seconds... I had a function in there to monitor for install completion at first, turns out the setup file spawns so many childprocesses the function just got confused and locked up -_-)Alternatively you could drop the installation file in the folder specified on the $folderPath variable too. That will skip the download and use the file. This function easily adapts in to other versions f.e.
