• How can I throttle the bandwidth consumed by Windows Automatic Updates?

  We have many Windows XP computers sharing one connection to the internet. These machines are set to download all available automatic updates and then prompt the user to install them. Whenever Patch Tuesday rolls around, our internet usage pegs out, and remains that way for most of the day, and sometimes into the following Wednesday. This hurts! I still want the machines to start to download the updates as soon as they are available, but if it takes until Thursday or Friday before the last updates are downloaded, that's still better than the latency and dropped connections we are seeing now as a result of the internet connection bottleneck. What can I do to throttle back how rapidly each machine downloads the updates, while still having them all start the download process as soon as the updates are available? I have no desire to run a WSUS server. Also, the internet connection is more than enough, whenever there are no updates to download.

• All in a Day's Work: Unblocking Multiple Downloaded Files with a Single Command

  Files downloaded using Internet Explorer retain Internet Zone permission level and hence are “Blocked” by default on Windows 7 machines. Honestly, while an added overhead for developers; I really appreciate this feature as it provides a good protection layer for casual web users. My workaround is to simply unblock the downloaded zip file (if download was a zip file) which, in turn, unblocks the files stored within. Today however, I was left with a situation where I had to “Open” and “Copy” the content rather than “Save” a zip file. That of course left me with a few dozen files I have to manually unblock. A few minutes of internet search lead me to the link below which worked like a charm: 1-Download streams.exe from SystInternals - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897440.aspx 2-Go to command prompt (cmd.exe) 3-Navigate to where you have streams.exe installed 4-Use command line switches: streams.exe –s –d “<folder path>” This removed the Internet Zone restrictions from all files under “<folder path>” and its subfolders as well. • Find routers IP address on the other side

  Here's the basic setup of my network In this diagram: 1: The internet c: cable 2: Wireless router w: wireless connection 3: A win7 box with internet connection sharing enabled 4: A wireless router, but I'm only using its LAN capabilities to connect box 5 to the internet. 5: A win7 box, the computer I'm using to make this post. So its internet works just fine. Now if I'm on box 5, and I ping 192.168.1.1, I hit 4. If I'm on box 3 and I ping 192.168.1.1, I hit 2. Now obviously box 3 does not think 4's IP address is 192.168.1.1, or I wouldn't be able to connect to the internet. Okay, now that you know as much as I do about my network, here's my question: If I was on box 3, how would I determine the IP address of 4? Basically I'm running a webserver on box 5 and want to access this webserver on box 3 and other boxes. So that's the end goal. If there's other information there that can help, I'd appreciate it.   I'm a starting a small service practically. And I have single server currently. No money to purchase separated/dedicated firewall equipment now. Is it effective installing firewall software on same machine which offering internet service? My server will offer HTTP, NFS, and SSH, and custom made server software on a several ports. (edit) All services (except NFS) should be open to internet. Not internal services. I guess my machine (virtualized within Xen) is connected to the internet directly because I can connect to my machine SSH with only IP address. (edit) NFS is not open to internet. Sorry for my mistake. NFS will be served via SSH only.

• Getting wireless to work on Ubuntu 11.10 (on a mac machine)

  I have a 2008 white 13.3 inch macbook that now solely runs ubuntu. However, I cannot get wifi or cable to work on it. Regarding the cable, it atleast tries to connect but eventually disconnects from the wired network. Here is the output for lspci (pastebin) I tried installing b43-fwcutter and firmware-b43 but get errors. (I loaded them from a thumb drive and tried sudo dpkg -i). I cannot understand these instructions from the documentation, as I cannot locate the pool directory. b43-fwcutter is located on the Ubuntu install media under ../pool/main/b/b43-fwcutter/ and patch is located under ../pool/main/p/patch/ or both in the official repositories online. Note: In some versions (10.04 and 11.04 at least) there is not a /pool/main/p/patch/ If this file is missing then you don't need it. In this case you only need to install /pool/main/b/b43-fwcutter by following the instructions below.

• How to show what proxies/firewalls are enabled on Windows XP?

  Hi, I'm trying to fix a Windows XP PC that is having a strange problem. The computer can't seem to connect to the internet, even though an internet connection is present. The router and internet is working fine as I've connected a laptop to it via LAN and wireless and both worked fine. The PC in question is connected to the router as it has an IP from the DHCP. The problem is I can't connect to nor ping any internet address from the PC. I can't even connect to the router admin itself. I've tried both LAN ports in the PC, same problem and both. I'm assuming there's a proxy or firewall on the PC stopping the connections, I just don't know how to find them or see which one is causing the issue. So my question is how do I on Windows XP display the system proxy settings and/or any firewalls that are running? Cheers.

• Black frame around screen after HDMI connection failure

  I was trying to watch a movie in my computer through the TV, so I connected both with an HDMI cable. I was unable to have a successful setup (the colors were all weird on the TV and the screen size, incorrect), I tried many resolutions using the nvidia-settings application and somehow my screen got framed by a black border and after that I have been unable to remove it, even after restarting the computer and not being connected to the HDMI cable anymore. I am using Ubuntu 11.10 amd64, my GPU is an nVidia GeForce 8600M GT and I am using the propietary driver version 280. The problem is due to some setting with my account only. I logged in to the guest session and the resolution is right there. Also, my desktop "thinks" the resolution is right (i.e. 1280x800), but it must be right in another scale because there is pixel area occupied by the black frame.

• Network switches for LAN party

  I am working on setting up the network for a small LAN party (less than 16 people). Most of them do not have wireless cards in their rigs, so I need to set up some way for everyone to a) play LAN games and b) access the internet. The LAN party will probably take place in my basement, where I have enough space. However, the basement is not wired up with the router which is actually on the floor above. I make a cantenna a while back that can boost the wireless performance of my computer significantly. How can I use this to provide internet and LAN to guests? My hope was that I could use a switch like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833181166 for the LAN - but how can I give people access to the internet? Is there such thing as a network extender / 16-port switch? Obviously, the internet performance doesn't need to be super stellar, because the games will be using LAN - so I am looking to provide some usable internet for web browsing, and very high speed LAN for games. • Onboard Ethernet suddenly stopped working to router

  Hey guys, yesterday I have a sudden problem of my Ethernet connection to my router. My computer is a Pendium 4 with Window XP SP3 running on it and it was working fine earlier in the day, but yesterday night was the start of the problem. My computer is unable to ping to the router and to any other website and unable to get internet connection. As beside it was connected to a hub, I directly connected it to the router directly and the same problem occurred, being unable to ping to the router (and connecting to it) and still no internet access. My directly connected to the modem and the problem still persisted. For each connection, I connected it to my computer and my laptop and my laptop was able to connect, while my desktop computer was unable. I wondered if it was a OS issue and ran a live Ubuntu CD to see if Ubuntu was able to connect to the internet, but the issue persisted and I was unable to get internet access. I then set my router's lease time to 1 hour and waited. After 1 hour, the lease for my computer was removed and I hoped this worked, but it didn't work, but something strange is acting up. My desktop computer is still unable to ping to the router or connect to the internet, but for some reason, my router and desktop computer is still able to contact each other by providing a lease of an local ip address. The router record of a lease to my desktop computer, and when I do ipconfig, my desktop also recognize that it has been provided a local ip address. I have concluded that this is a hardware issue and the only solution to fix this is to by a network card adapter, but I am wondering if anyone has any solutions that could explain why this happen, why my mac address is 01-23-45-67-89-ab, and is there any way to fix it without buying a new network card? Task Portforward port 29000 from office computer. Problem Once I connected wan and lan cables I just had to set static lan ip (on server) and plug in switch with office computers into second nic. Then just right click on wan nic and select share internet connection. All office computers were assigned with an IP address 192.168.0.XXX and Gateway 192.168.0.1 (server). Now I have to open port and portfoward it from computer 192.168.0.190 (static ip, manual). Before enabling "RRA" I had to unshare internet connection (wan interface) and was able to setup network. Now how do I setup a network within "RRA" and share internet with private network?   I have a laptop computer that I had when I was working at an IT company. I don´t work there anymore but I could keep the computer (Lenovo) Suddenly my wireless internet didn´t work anymore showing error "insert SIM into the mobile broadband device" and month later connectiong to internet with cable got disabled I don´t know the password to sign in as an administrator on domain and whatever I try to do/install/change settings... everything needs admin rights. To surf the internet again with the computer I tried to install a new Windows but it´s seems to be protected with Bit Locker, asking for recovery key. I´ve googled and googled bunch of CMD tricks but most of the shows "system error 5 has occured" Is there anyway to get the wireless internet to work, change the admin or install new Windows? - or should I rather enjoying throwing it of the balcony or set it one fire? :)

• Lynksys WRT120N wireless router not connecting to ADSL

  I have a lynksys WRT120N wireless router that was connected to Sterlite ADSL modem. The internet connection was working fine through wireless access. I changed the ADSL router because it developed some power issues and got it replaced with the same model/brand from the service provider. However I am not able to access internet now. Here is the current setting Sterlite SAM300 XA IP Address: 192.168.2.1 (I changed it to this IP because the IP address of my ADSL router was same) Lynksys WRT120N wireless router IP Address: 192.168.1.1 If I connect my laptop to ADSL router directly, the internet works fine. It is only that that if I access it wirelessley through wireless router that I am not able to connect to internet. The IP address setting has been configured to obtain IP address automatically. I have windows 7 OS home edition. Could someone please help me to fix this issue.

  3 room mates share a single 2 Mbps connection. Have a 40GB per month download limit beyond which speed drops to 256Kbps which is annoying. One of the roommates abuses the connection by downloading beyond his quota limit. I have a Netgear WNR1000v2 Wireless router + ADSL Modem to connect to the internet. We all access internet via Wireless router which connects to ADSL Modem. I need a free proxy solution which can help me set 40GB / 3 (13 GB) limit for each person (every person has 2 devices - a PC and a phone with Wifi) Uniform Bandwidth control - when 2 people browse the internet they should get 1 Mbps each, and when 3 people access, they should get 2Mbps divided by 3. After each person crosses their monthly download limit, they should be able to access the internet with 256Kbps speed only or lesser. Can I have a custom firmware on my wireless router do this (or) Do I need a proxy server ? Please point me to any relevant tutorials (for example with Squid).

  I have this topology: [internet] ^ L-------[wlan0]-[host]-[wlan1]-----[client-1] I tried to bridge wlan0 wlan1 but it wont work with brctl; but magically when I issue this command #iw set dev wlan0 4addr on it adds wlan0 to the bridge BUT I lost all internet connection and I was unable to hook it to the internet router. can somebody please explain why did that happen and is there a way to get this done ?

• Does a 300mbps 802.11n wireless connection have any noticeable speed improvement over 54mbps g?

  300mbps sounds wonderful, but not with my horrible Comcast internet connection. I doubt there's an internet connection in America that even hits 54mbps. So I'm guessing that the only reason someone would be inclined to upgrade is for faster data transfer within the local network. With my internet connection where download rates are rarely ever above a few hundred kilobytes a second, would I even see any improvement in switching from 802.11g to 802.11n?

  I am writing a program that opens LPT1 and writes a value to it. The WriteFile function is returning an error code of 1167, "The device is not connected". The Device Manager shows that LPT1 is present. I have a cable connected between a development board and the PC. The cable converts JTAG pin signals to signals on the parallel port. Power is applied and the cable is connected between the development board and the PC. The development board is powered on. I am using: Windows XP MS Visual Studio 2008, C language, console application, debug environment.
